New York State Regent Martha Morris Crapser

What a JOY it has been to be your State Regent these past three years! This off icer believes a sense of Education, Patriotism and Historic Preservation is demonstrated by the New York Daughters and is grateful to all chapter members, state off icers and state chairmen for taking an active role over the past three years.

The New York State Organization will continue to Celebrate 125! as we approach Continental Congress. This administration has encouraged all New York Daughters to leave their comfort zone and follow President General Lynn Young’s goal to go out into your communities and f ind well deserving citizens – celebrate them and thank them for their service and dedication.

This spring has continued to be active time for the New York Daughters with two District Workshops and two rededications. On April 9, 2016, District VII Director Robbie Dresson lead a workshop in Corning, NY, which followed the new format for district meetings. The daughters enjoyed and participated in a Focus Group featuring Membership and the Application

Process. On May 21, 2016, District IV Director Betty White lead a workshop in Lake Placid, NY, featuring the new format with focus groups which allows for small group discussion. The New York State Board of Management followed the District meeting later that day. In order to ensure a smooth transition the new off icers-elect were invited to join the state board during their meeting.

New York Daughters continue to Celebrate 125! and Light the Way for Liberty’s Legacy as we Celebrate America with two rededications of two outstanding New York Daughters. On April 9, 2016, Karen Stewart, District Director of I, II, & XII, arranged a rededication and wreath laying Ceremony for Helen Pouch’s grave site in the Moravian Cemetery on Staten Island with Marti Santo and the Richmond County Chapter as hostess and whose chapter member was Mrs. Pouch. State Chaplain, Nancy Pawlikowski and State Registrar Pat Taylor joined your State Regent to participate in the ceremony. Several New York City members attended as well. It was great to honor Helena Rebecca Hellwig Pouch who served as the 18th President General and was the fourth New Yorker to serve in this esteemed office; Mrs. Pouch had one of the most trying terms of office of any President General because it was during the World War II years of 1941 to 1944. Empire State DAR News • June 2016

To continue the state’s Celebration of 125! on May 5, 2016, the New York State Organization held a Rededication and Wreath Laying Ceremony for one of the four NSDAR Founders, Ellen Hardin Walworth. It is interesting to note that Mrs. Walworth also founded the Saratoga Chapter in 1894. The day was blessed by having several New York Daughters in attendance: Honorary President General Merry Ann T. Wright, Organizing Secretary General Denise VanBuren, Honorary State Regent Elizabeth (Libby) McKee, State Vice Regent Nancy Zwetsch, State Chaplain Nancy Pawlowski, State Organizing Secretary Wilhelmena Kelly, State Registrar Pat Taylor and Saratoga Chapter Regent Corrine Scirocco. The beautiful four foot granite monument with a bronze tablet was dedicated on September 19, 1991, which is in the year of our Society’s Centennial Anniversary. It was the State Regent’s Project of then Merry Ann T. Parks, who now we know as Honorary President General Merry Ann T. Wright. An interesting quote of Mrs. Walworth selected by Mrs. Wright is written on the tablet; it reads: “I am determined not only to hold my own, but to make myself felt in the community to which I belong…I believe I will succeed.” Prior to the ceremony in Congress Park the New York Daughters along with the Saratoga Chapter, their Regent Corrine Scirocco, Mayor Joanne Yepsen and other dignitaries dedicated a new state marker sign honoring Ellen Hardin Walworth and Pine Grove, her home of more than thirty years. Proclamations were read at both sites.

I want to thank you for joining me in Honoring Our Heritage and I am grateful to you for your commitment to historic preservation with the selection of the New York Room wallpaper, the promotion for future DAR leadership through the Legacy Grants and your support for the Guardian Trust Campaign. Through the talented efforts of Denise VanBuren, New York Room Chairman, and Patrice Birner, State Regent’s Project Chairman, and through chapter visits the WOW team has reached its goal and surpassed it. This, of course, was only accomplished with the dedication and hard work of these chairmen and the generous gifts of the New York Daughters. More than $146,000 was raised for the State Regent’s Project; $100,000 for the purchase of the hand painted reproduction wallpaper by Jean Baptiste Reveillon, $15,000 for its installation plus the cost of the Big Reveal Party and the printing of “Daughters of the Empire State: 50 Leaders Who Shaped the DAR Legacy in New York” by Denise VanBuren and Patrice Birner. The NYSO purchased for $11,500 one of two rare arabesque wallpaper panels, named Flora from Reveillon stock books housed in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris dated 1788. This will be the first in the DAR Museum’s Wallpaper Collection and because of this purchase we can say that our room’s wallpaper is a reproduction of the DAR Museum’s Wallpaper Collection. The other panel, Venus on her Chariot, was acquired through the museum’s funding. Both however can be placed in the New York Room at the New York State Regent’s request. So we can look forward to having them each year if we so want. There is a minimum of $11,000 for a future purchase of draperies if needed. All future contributions designated Wallpaper will be placed in the New Y ork Room Fund.

Another part of the State Regent’s Project was awarding $6,000 to recipients of the Leadership Legacy Grants; this innovative idea was a tremendous success through the efforts of Melissa Zack, State Chairman. Nine candidates won the grants to go to either Continental Congress or State Conference. Other New York State Organization funds distributed $44,500 to various aspects of our three fold mission of Historic Preservation, Education and Patriotism. They are Valley Forge $2,500; Scholarships to New York Boys attending the Hillside School $3,000; New York Cottage Renovations $10,000; Celebrate 125! Donations to Fort Drum USO and Feed Our Veterans, $8,000; President General ’s Project, $6,000 and State Guardian Trust gift of $15,000.

In closing, I want to congratulate all of you for your outstanding commitment of service to your community through your efforts to preserve history, promote education and patriotism. I am so proud of the New York Daughters. You truly are AMAZING!

120th New York State Conference Daughters of the American Revolution

September 23-25, 2016 The Desmond, Albany, New York

COME ONE! BETTER YET, COME ALL!

Members, HODARS, Prospective Members, and Guests

With the greatest pleasure I invite YOU to join us in the New York State Capital for our 120th State Conference. We will be focusing on our NSDAR goal of historic preservation. William Murtagh, First Keeper of the National Register for Historic Places, stated “… at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future.” Through speakers and workshops being planned by the Conference Committee and Districts III, IV and VI Hostesses, we look forward to your engagement in stimulating conversations with Daughters from across the state and our Conference Guests. Learn how they have fostered chapter growth, used chapter programming, and involved chapter members not only in the community but also at the state and national levels of service.

Our “Welcoming Tea” will be Thursday, September 22nd. I look forward to meeting YOU there! Each New York Chapter that received recognition at the 125th Continental Congress will receive their award at the Welcoming Tea. All Chapter Regents or their representatives should be present.

Rise early and join us for breakfast on Friday morning. At the State Family Breakfast you are encouraged to wear your "Signature" pins of the past. Roving Pages will find Honoraries who remember why the pins were selected and explain them to you.

Our Luncheon on Friday will highlight “Times Past” looking at the preservation of time pieces. On Friday while in the Capital Region you will have an opportunity to visit the New York State Library where our Organization has strived to preserve records of importance and to make them available to genealogists. Or you may choose to visit the Schuyler Mansion where Alexander Hamilton was married!

The Juniors will be showcasing their love of DAR at the Saturday morning breakfast.

The Awards Luncheon will be Saturday, September 24th. State Officers and Committee Chairmen will introduce recipients of the Outstanding Junior, Chapter Regent and Chapter Registrar Awards.

At our Banquet on Saturday evening you will be hearing from Reporter General Candidate, Connie Olde. The Reporter General maintains a Library of Chapter Programs and will share with you programs on Historic Preservation and more….

The 120th New York State Conference is an opportunity for you to learn more about the DAR, make new friends, and renew friendships. You will find daughters just like YOU with whom you share enthusiasm for education, historic preservation and patriotism.

Help us Keep New York Strong! COME ONE, COME ALL!

Nancy W. Zwetsch, State Regent-Elect

Museum Correspondent Docents

Not so long ago, Museum Correspondent Docents had to lug around a slide projector and slides when they gave a program. Cumbersome and expensive, (Period Rooms slides cost over $100), they gave way to the CD programs. Only $15 and playable on a laptop, they were a vast improvement over the slides.

Now, a simple IPod can hold programs. Programs are downloaded from National for free and an IPod can fit in a purse or pocket.

No matter how docents carry the programs, they are more than willing to come and present a program to your chapter. Contact Anne Edwards 315-865-4597; Dr. Sara French, [email protected]; Lois Gruner, [email protected], and Joan Sondergaard, [email protected] to schedule your program today.

And don't forget to stop by and see the fabulous new wallpaper in the New York State Room when you're at Continental Cogress this summer!

Kathy KeenanState Chairman

National Defense Going to Congress this year? If so plan to attend three important events.

1. Patriotism Luncheon, Wednesday, June 15, 12 noon to 2:00 pm at the Hyatt. The keynote speaker will be Bonnie Carroll¸ Founder and President of Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and the winner of a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom.

2. National Defense Night, Saturday, June 18 in Constitution Hall. This is always a glittery night where awards are presented to military personnel. The keynote speaker will be Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald, a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal. A 1975 graduate of West Point, he went on to the University of Utah for his MBA in 1978. The same night special recognition will be given to the USO for its 75 years of service. The night’s entertainment will be the USO Show Troupe.

3. Listen on National Defense Night to see if NSDAR has been able to set a new Guinness World Record for the number of letters sent in one month to military personnel. If you are not going to Congress, please give your letter to someone that is, or mail them to this chairman to take with her. Be sure not to seal your letter and to have a 47 cent stamp on the envelope and your name and return address on the envelope. Please see the NSDAR website for the very specific details required by Guinness!

It has been a pleasure to serve during this administration as the State Chairman of National Defense. Remember when planning your programs for your chapter’s next DAR year to include at least one program on one of the many topics included under National Defense.

Nancy HannaState Chairman

Americanism This chairman wishes to thank the New York chapters for their participation in many worthwhile Americanism projects during the past three years. It was my pleasure to review the Master Chapter Reports this year and see that 110 naturalization ceremonies were attended by New York Daughters and 31 members assisted with naturalization classes.

The highlight of my term as chairman will always be the presentation of the Americanism Medal to a candidate sponsored by Oneida Chapter. It was truly a special honor to participate in this celebration along with State Regent Martha Crapser. I would encourage every New York chapter to pursue the sponsorship of a worthy citizen to receive one of these awards.

The DAR Medal of Honor is awarded to an adult US citizen, by birth, who has been involved in community service. The Americanism Medal is awarded to an adult who has been a naturalized United States citizen for five years. Honoring an outstanding citizen with one of these prestigious awards is a way of thanking them for their contributions to their community. For more information on these two awards visit the Americanism Committee page on the National website at: http://www.dar.org/members/committees

Literacy Promotion

New York State Literacy Promotion Awards

New York State Daughters can be proud of their efforts promoting literacy throughout our State, Country, and World. And Congratulations to our Literacy Promotion Contest Winners!

First Place for Outstanding Service of Promoting Literacy by an Individual goes to Carol Gans from Hendrick Hudson Chapter. Carol has continued her efforts working with the Pallisa Public Library in Uganda, where in 2015 she focused on educating and training Stella, a local teacher. Carol discovered that a local university near Pallisa offered a degree in library science and enrolled Stella, paying all expenses. Thanks to Carol, the Pallisa library has been open for over two years, with community and town council support. Carol has many exciting stories about her work in Uganda and the library’s myriad renovations, training, and future goals. Come meet Carol at State conference and find out how you can serve as a partner in her continuing work.

First Place for the Outstanding Service of Promoting Literacy by a Chapter goes to Peter Minuit Chapter. Two of their many activities stand out. Regent Megan Von Behren, a member of the American Association of Law Libraries, staffed a booth for three days at their annual conference collecting children’s books from conference attendees and donating them to Philadelphia Children’s Foundation, an educational-support organization connecting students and their families to resources. Additionally, Peter Minuit Chapter sponsors an Historical Book Club. This year’s selections included The Myth of Race from the Colonial Era to Obama’s America by Jacqueline Jones; A Midwifes’s Tale by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich; Liberty’s Torch: The Great Adventure to Build the Statue of Liberty by Elizabeth Mitchell; Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community and War by Nathaniel Philbrick; Plantation Patriot by Frances Leigh Williams; and The Muse of the Revolution by Mercy Otis Warren. Besides offering engaging conversations, these books will certainly excite your historical fancy and further ignite your patriotic passion! For a synopsis of these books, contact [email protected]
