This is a little story pertain-ing to coal miners told to me inthe early sixties while I workedas a stevedore on the Docks ofNorth Sydney, NS. My shift was three to eleven,on this shift we knocked off atsix pm for mealtime, when allhands made their way to thewaiting room for lunch. One evening through thecourse of our meal, I noticed one
stevedore consuming all buta small portionof his sand-wich thentossing the
r e m a i n d e raside. After sev-
eral sandwiches I became curi-ous and questioned him. “Bernie, why do you eatall but the corner of your sand-wich ?” “Ronnie, it's a coal minershabit, mine I picked up in,Florence Colliery where wealways looked after our beadyeyed friends, who welcomed ourcoal stained tidbits.”
Please be advised that IndianBeach in North Sydney will beclosed for the winter season tovehicular traffic, effectiveWednesday, December 20,2017. The closure was made as anoperational decision to allow thenew project work to settle andmature over the Winter months. CBRM Parks & Groundswishes to thank you for yourunderstanding and cooperation.

I would like to take thisopportunity to wish you all avery Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year. It has been my pleasure towork with an amazing group ofdedicated community volun-teers over this past year whoare the backbone of theirrespective communities. These individuals have beenvery supportive of our publica-tion and have treated me with agreat deal of respect and havetaken the time and effort to keepme informed of communityactivities. Without these volunteers, many of the local activities andfestivals would not be able tobe held. This year we also partneredwith K-LEE RADIO and broad-cast over 15 radio remotes fromlocal businesses, clubs andfestivals and shared a lot oflaughs and great music. To close the year off, we aresponsoring two radio showswhere you can send ChristmasGreetings to family and friendswho cannot make it home thisyear for Christmas. This is my last column forthis year, and where lastweek’s took a look at thedarker side of Christmas Ithought it best to go out on ahigh note and revisit what iswithout a doubt the mostwonderfully entertaining andmagical yuletide specials of all.It ’s the 53rd
anniversary ofthe classicChristmas film“Rudolph theR e d - N o s e dR e i n d e e r ” .That animatedC h r i s t m a sclassic wasproduced in1964 by theA m e r i c a np r o d u c t i o ncompany Rankin/Bass, whowere masters at spectacularstop-motion animationspecials (their method becameknown as “Animagic”). The special featured thevoice of Burl Ives as “Sam theSnowman”; he told the tale ofhow that timid little reindeerwent down in history for savingChristmas for all the little boysand girls around the world. Interestingly enough,Rudolph was actually voicedby the late Canadian voiceactress Billie Mae Richards-she also provided the voice ofTender-heart Bear of “The CareBears”, and appeared in theoriginal “Spiderman” TV series, the Canadian TV series “MySecret Identity”, “War of theWorlds” and “ManiacMansion”, to name just a few. When you realize that“Rudolph” was all created byhand, with three-dimensionalminiature sets, props andcharacters-all painstakinglymoved fraction of an inch by
fraction of an inch to createsomething that (for its time)was a technical innovation, itis even more amazing. Thefact that the show has stoodthe test of time speaksvolumes about its innocence, magic and charm. Who canever forget seeing that loveablelittle reindeer, the comicallyterrifying Abominable SnowMonster of the North (a.k.a.The Bumble), Yukon Corneliusthe prospector, the Island of
Misfit Toys withDolly theRagdoll, theboy Hermeyand the girlClarice-and ofcourse Mrs.Claus.For the next 20plus yearsRankin/BassProduc t i onswere involved ina huge number
of regular animated projects(certainly too many to listhere) and also other stop-motion animated holidayspecials such as “Rudolph’sShiny New Year”, “Rudolphand Frosty’s Christmas inJuly”, “The Little DrummerBoy”, “Frosty the Snowman”and “The Easter Bunny isComing to Town” to name justa few. Their last stop-motionproduction was “The Life andAdventures of Santa Claus” in1985; unfortunately thecompany shut down in 1987.You will find Rudolph’swonderful tale on lots ofscreens as you read this, andthe regional library has acomplete DVD set of RankinBass productions for loan.“Rudolph the Red-NosedReindeer” is without a doubtone of the greatest Christmasprograms for kids of all ages-right up there with “It’s aCharlie Brown Christmas”(1965). Merry Christmas,Happy New Year, and pleasehelp out those in need.
