SALT AND RELIGION - PART 5 OF A SERIES ON SALTMost people know the Bible story of Lot’s wife, who on

stopping to look back at the destruction of Sodom andGomorrah was turned into a pillar of salt. There are many pillar shaped deposits of rock salt in thearea, now identified as the Plain of Jordan at the southernend of the Dead Sea. These were probably formed bythermal brine springs welling upwards, their depositsgradually increasing in height. The Dead Sea itself is sosalty that it is impossible to sink; people float with no effortand the mud is used in treatments for skin and joint diseases. When King Abimelech destroyed the city of Shechem, heis said to have sown salt upon it. This effectively cursed theland as no crops could be grown and therefore the city, ifrebuilt, would have no means of supporting itself in a largelyagricultural region. The substance may not have actuallybeen salt but could have been a type of cress or kudimmu, which produces a semi-salt or lye deposit. The Book of Job has the earliest mention of salt in all knownliterature with the phrase ‘Can that which is unsavoury beeaten without salt?’ Salt was routinely cast upon burntofferings and money or salt could be part of a gift to thetemple and in traditional Jewish homes to preserve thecovenant between their people and God, Jews dip theSabbath bread in salt.

Salt is not just important in the Christian religion. The ProphetMuhammed is reported to have said that ‘Salt is the masterof your food. God sent down four blessings from the sky, fire, water, iron and salt’. Muhammed also advises eating asmall amount of salt before eating a meal. Although thisseems an unusual suggestion, the chlorides present in saltconstitute the only readily available source of chlorideswith which the body can manufacture hydrochloric acid, vital for proper digestion in the stomach. Therefore eatingsalt before a meal allows any deficiency of hydrochloricacid to be made up just before introducing new food. Both the Hindu and Jain religions use salt as part of theirceremonies. In Hinduism, salt is used in both wedding andhousewarming ceremonies and in Jainism, devotees offerraw rice and a pinch of salt before the deities. In Wicca, aPagan new religious movement, salt is symbolic of theelement Earth. It is also believed to have cleansing propertiesand will clear an area of negative or harmful energies. The Shinto religion of Japan uses salt for ritual purificationof both places and people. Piles of salt placed by theentrances of restaurants ward off evil and attract customersand small offerings of salt are placed around the dohyo orcircular ring used by the combatants in sumo wrestling.
