'Gardening Through Your Golden Years' With Joyce K. Williams

Gardening has a myriad of health benefits – both physical and emotional – what better way to help keep healthy as you age? People who garden not only have lower stress levels but a lowered risk of getting heart disease, obesity, and diabetes!

However, since the type of gardens being used for therapy are relaxing and easy to enjoy, what can an avid senior gardener do who wants to reap the benefits of their own home garden without the back-breaking work that is sometimes involved? With gardening’s many benefits, it would be a shame to have to stop doing something you love as you get older. Luckily, there are ways you can continue performing your favorite pastime long into your golden years. “LIVING ON THE EDGE OF THE LAND:

UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGING NATURAL WORLD AROUND US” CLASS SERIES WITH BA RBARA WATERS

How much do you really know? Join us as we learn and explore some fascinating topics. We are living in a remarkable place in a time of change. Our lives are planned around daily, seasonal & astronomical changes each year. We watch the moonrise, sunrise & sunset. We look for the first green shoots poking through the snow and see buds, leaves and flowers appear. The Cape Cod coastlines and shifting sands, the weather, rain & snow fall amounts all impact our lives. Barbara Waters began her 50+ career in science education in 1963 as an Elementary Science Specialist for the Falmouth Public Schools and finished up her career as a consultant in science education for the Chatham Public Schools focusing on use of local coastal ecosystem and assisting in field trips to Chatham beaches and marshes as tools for teaching science and math curriculum, setting up saltwater aquariums and coordinating fieldtrip and equipment costs with Friends of Chatham Waterways and Friends of Pleasant Bay. Most recently Barbara volunteered her workshop organization experience at the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center in developing and implementing a STEM communications and engineering design curriculum in partnership with local schools. In 1987 Barbara received an MA at UMass Boston in Critical and Creative Thinking in Science. Her Master’s thesis focused on groundwater education that was published through University of Massachusetts Extension in 1994 as “Watershed to Bay: A Raindrop Journey”.

The First Class: “Raindrop Journey” will be Wednesdays, April 5th and 12th, 10-11:30 Cape Cod depends on sole source aquifers left 16,000 years ago by the great glaciers. What does this mean? What is the journey of a raindrop on Cape Cod? How does Chatham protect and preserve our water supply?

*TED comes to the COA… The Chatham COA is offering a series of 6 sessions in which short, powerful, entertaining and fascinating videos called "TED talks" will be presented. These talks are by some of the world's most knowledgeable and inspired thinkers, and cover a wide range of topics which are of interest to the information seeking and "curious souls".

Each short video will be followed by a group discussion, facilitated by Elsa Bastone, Ph.D., on the subjects and ideas presented. Our presentations will cover subjects involving creativity such as Tracy Chevalier’s talk on how the painting "Girl with a Pearl Earring" inspired her novel of that name; a Buddhist monk’s talk on happiness and responsibility; other subjects concerning human nature, such as vulnerability, emotional hygiene and more. They are well presented, informative, and entertaining. We will all have a grand time learning!

*TED is a non-profit devoted to spreading ideas globally in 110 languages. Its mission is to build a clearinghouse of free knowledge from the world's most inspired thinkers, and a community of those of us willing to engage with ideas and each other.

The series will be held at the COA on Thursdays; April 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18, 25 from 1-2:30pm. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Transportation is available. To register call 508-945-5190.

Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall Recording Event Thursday, April 13th at 1pm

The Cape Cod Vet Center is planning an exciting project for the arrival of the Vietnam Moving Memorial Wall, which will be visiting Cape Cod this summer. Please join Lindsay Pepin of the Cape Cod Vet Center at the Chatham COA on Thursday, April 13th to be part of reading aloud a portion of the 58,272 names that appear on the Wall. A recording will be compiled from these readings and played on a continuous loop while the Wall is displayed during its stop on Cape Cod. This will be a valuable addition to the display, and a way for Veterans and other Cape Cod residents to be involved in a meaningful way.

Participants can plan for a 10-15 minute appointment to result in approximately 5 minutes of reading. Recording will start at 1:00pm so please contact the Chatham COA at 508-945-5190 to make your appointment!

SHINE NEWS - **Hospital Observation Stays and Original Medicare**

Many times when a person goes to the emergency room and is then placed in a hospital bed, they are not admitted as “inpatient” but are there under “observation”. When a Medicare Beneficiary is in the hospital under observation, Medicare Part B (medical insurance) will be billed, not Medicare Part A (hospital insurance). This can result in increased costs for the beneficiary. For instance, Medicare requires a three-day inpatient stay at a hospital before it will pay for any stay in a skilled nursing facility and time spent under observation in a hospital will not count towards that three-day

minimum. If a Medicare Beneficiary goes to a skilled nursing facility after a stay at the hospital under observation they will be responsible for the entire bill which could be thousands of dollars. The Medicare Beneficiary may also be responsible for the Part B deductible and co-insurance if they do not have a supplement.

As of March 8, 2017, hospitals are required to provide a Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON) to a Medicare Beneficiary who has been receiving observation services as an outpatient for more than 24 hours. This notice will inform the individual as to the reason(s) they are an outpatient receiving observation services and the implications of such status with regards to Medicare cost sharing and post-hospital skilled nursing facility services. An oral explanation of this notice must also be provided. A signature must be obtained from the individual or a person acting on the individual’s behalf to acknowledge receipt. If the individual refuses to sign the MOON, the staff member of the hospital providing the notice must sign certifying that notification was presented.

This notice was a result of the Notice of Observation Treatment and Implication for Care Eligibility Act (NOTICE Act) which was enacted August 6, 2015. This Act will hopefully make the Medicare Beneficiary more aware of the implications of not being admitted as inpatient.

Please call the COA at 508-945-5190 to schedule an appointment with a SHINE counselor if you would like more information on this or any other Medicare issue. Trained SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) volunteers offer free, confidential counseling on all aspects of health insurance to anyone on Medicare.

Exciting Opportunity to Help Shape Tomorrow’s Leaders! Do you have a special skill you’d like to share? Interested in helping girls build leadership skills? Enjoy working with youth? Girl Scouts may have just what you are looking for!

There are many ways to engage with Girl Scouting, including:

*Becoming a leader * Volunteering to help a troop *Teaching a special skill

New leaders receive free training and on-going support. Leaders decide where, when, and how often they meet with their troop. Troop levels run from K -12 and most troops meet 1- 2x per month for about an hour during the school year.

Volunteers help in many ways, depending on their interest and schedule. Some examples of the way volunteers help include: special projects, be an extra pair of hands, read a story, sing a song, and/or assist with a field trip.

Teach a Special Skill to girls eager to learn a new skill. Whatever your special skill there are girls eager to learn about gardening, arts/crafts, the stock market, business development, writing, music, technology, ecology, outdoor skills, time management, and many, many others.

Please contact Darlene Skog at [email protected] with any questions and/or for more information about how to get involved. Please note that adult leaders and volunteers need to be members of the organization and complete a successful background check. Full and partial membership financial aid is available to adult and girl members. Guest speakers and teachers do not need to join the organization.

The mission of Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, character, and confidence who develop leadership skills that they will use to make the world a better place.

BE ALERT TO TAX SCAM S In recent years, thousands of people have lost money and had their personal information compromised due to tax scams and fake IRS communications. The IRS will NEVER:

Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes.

Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.

Demand you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.

Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. The IRS does NOT initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media to

request personal or financial information. The IRS does NOT threaten taxpayers with lawsuits, imprisonment or other enforcement action. Please share this information with others and check out Consumer Alerts at the IRS website: www.irs.gov. ~~ Courtesy of the Commonwealth’s Comptroller ~~

From The Directors Desk…

Keep Yourself Safe…Fraud and Scam Awareness

Fraudsters use a number of persuasion tactics to convince their targets to give them money. Here are three of the most common red flags reported by the AARP Foundation ElderWatch hotline:

Number 1: You’re contacted out of the blue with an offer for free money or fast cash. If you receive an unsolicited offer like this, there’s a good chance that you’ve been targeted by a scam artist. Most scams of this nature rely on your response to their initial promise of lottery winnings, fast-cash from an easy work-at-home job, guaranteed returns from a hot new investment or an inheritance you didn’t know about, so that they can gain access to your personal information and solicit money from you.

Number 2: You are pressured to act quickly. Scam artists are very good at pretending to have “limited time only” offers or “inside information” that is designed to get you to act quickly and make an irrational decision. Don’t fall for those tactics. If the offer is legitimate it will still be there tomorrow.

Number 3: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scam artists have a knack for making people believe that they’ll be better off if they take the deal. But what really happens is that the scammers are the ones who are better off – they leave with your money and you’re left with nothing from the too-good-to-be-true promises that were made.

The United States Senate Special Committee on Aging has established a Fraud Hotline. If you know someone who has been a victim of fraud-or if you suspect that they may become a victim-please contact them toll-free at 1-855-303-9470 or email using the web form found at https://www.aging.senate.gov/fraud-hotline. The Committee’s investigators have experience in fraud concerning retirement savings, identity theft, phone scams, Medicare, Social Security, and a variety of other consumer issues important to seniors and the elderly. They are there to assist you in maneuvering through those difficult next steps, as well as to refer your case to the appropriate federal or state authorities for inquiry, if appropriate, or to other organizations that may be able to provide further support. Please feel free to contact the fraud hotline with any leads, they’re happy to serve you.

Another Grisham book? Yes, and if you’ve never read John Grisham, now is a good time to start. And if you are an avid Grisham reader, you won’t want to miss this one. “The Whistler” brings us a story of a female lawyer in Florida who is an investigator for the Florida Board of Judicial Conduct. Most problems she encounters are caused by incompetence but one comes across her desk that is definitely

“corruption”. Could investigation into this case be dangerous – or Deadly? Find this on our New Arrival Shelf in the COA Library on the 2nd floor.

HANDWASHING DONE RIGHT Mayo Clinic Health Letter—March 2017

One of the best ways to prevent illness is to wash your hands often and well. Washing your hands removes germs that are picked up throughout the day.

* From preparing food *Taking out the garbage *Using the toilet

This can prevent germs from being transmitted to your mouth, eyes or nose, or to other people. To get the most protection, follow these tips: Wet your hands with clean running water. It can be warm or cold, evidence says temperature

doesn’t really matter. Lather well with liquid, bar or powder soap. Soap is better than water alone because elements in

the soap help lift the dirt and germs away from your skin. Rub vigorously for at least 20 seconds-or hum the happy birthday song through twice.

Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

Rinse well with clean, running water.

Wet hands are more germ friendly than dry ones. Dry your hands with a dry disposable towel or air dryer. Some evidence suggests that disposable towels are more hygienic than air dryers. It’s also a good idea to open bathroom doors using a paper towel; you never know who washed their hands prior to you and who didn’t!

If soap and water aren’t available-or in settings where hand washing is frequent, such as a doctor’s office or a hospital, an alcohol based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol is an acceptable substitute for disinfecting your hands. Be Well! Live Long! Live Strong!
