"Help A Hapless Herp"
Gnce again I find myself at the mercy of the membership! The advertised adoptees for the November meeting did not appear .. IJ.1hey all fell through at the last moment" Someday maybe I'll learn not to speak until they are safely in hand! But, all was not a total loss .. Dan and Chreryl Keyler brought in 7 Common Snappers (ChelydrC=l s Q

But who knows what Santa might bring us by then? \lJhile 1984 has fallen off some from 1983 , it has still been a good year for hapless herps .. Thanks to all who have helped with this!

Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus ssp)
Description - The Ringneck Snake is a small slender snake. The adult size ranges from 10" to 15", although the record size is over 24" .. The young are 4" to 5" at hatching. The dorsal color varies from blue black, blue gray, or slate to brownish. ':Phe ventral color may be yellow or orange to red., '11he distinctive neck ring matches the anterior ventral color .. The ventral markings vary with the subspecies. ~Ihe scales are smooth and the anal plate is divided.
Range - IJ.1here are 2 subspecies in IViinnesota .. The Northern Hingneck (De p. edwardsi) is known only from the counties of Carl ton, st. Louis, and IJake .. The Prairie Ringneck (D. p .. amyi) only from the. counties of Fillmore and Winona.
Habitat - 'Ihis is a snake of the woodlands. It seems to favor rocky hillsides in open woods. It is a secretive species and needs plenty of ground cover.
Habits - This is a gregarious snake, and several may be found under the same piece of cover .. When ann~yed it may hide its head and expose the brightly colored tail in a corkscrew shape .. It may also feign death ..
Food - This is an opportunistic feeder .. Hecorded food items include snakes, lizards, salamanders, frogs, insects, and earthworms. In Minnesota the Red Backed Salamander (Plethodon ctnereus) is likely an important food item. Despite their small size, this snake is a powerful constrictor!
Breeding - 'llhe Ringneck Snake is an egg layer (oviparous), wi tll the nWllber of eggs varying from 1 to 6 .. '11he eggs are elongate, with irregular shapes. Nests may be communal! ~lhe eggs are laid in June and July .. Incubation varies, taking from less than a month to 2 months .. '1bere is some evidence that in some cases the eggs may be retained until they are ready to hatch ..
status - None - This is a species that needs its distribution documented in the state of 1'·1innesota .. All sightings should be reported to DNR or to lvlH~)!

The November meeting was entertaining and informative. Bob Bader, visiting from Virginia, showed slides of his frog breeding set up, as well as slides of native Virginia herps. He specifically mentioned his breeding success with the White's 'l'ree Frog (Li toria caerulea) and gave pointers in their needs in captivi tye Gne of the more interesting points he made is that they like it hot. (~jte hot for D
frog! 'rempera tures of 80 to 100 degrees are tolerated well, Rnd seemingly art::: enjoyed. Attendance was 56. A special MHS thanks to Bob for corning up to see us .. lIe expecially enjoyed our tropical weather!

Herp Hints
Imn P@rwoll t s Yellow r1arginated Box 'lurtles (Cuora flavomargina ta) finally ended their incubation and hatched at 96 days. Ann is pleased! Bob Duerr requested info on the care of Hissing Cockroaches and Giant Millipedes. He was referred to some people who could likely answer his questions. Problems with IIskin rot" on a Boa Constrictor were brought up by Wade Erickson. Closer examination showed the problem to be more likely some sort of fungal infection .. "Jade will report back to us on this ..

At the November meeting one of our newer members asked "Wha t is a pinkie?1I \iJell, we can now give you the definitive answer to that question .. The following is reprinted from "The Forked Tongue", Newsletter of the Greater Cincinnati Herpetological Society, Vol. 9, No. 11, November 1984.
Wha t 's A .Fuzzy?
by
Dianne Conner
I raise mice. Quite often I have an abundant overflow of various sized mice that I don't need to feed my animals, so I offer to sell them to a few of my friends who are in need of feeder mice. However, if I talk to them over the phone, I'm never quite sure we are talking the same "size" language ..
IJet me try to enlighten you as to the various sizes of mice available:
1 .. Pinkie - rrhis is a newborn mouse" Hairless G Bright red and extremely tiny when borno As the days progress the color changes to a lighter shade of pink. Eyes clased.
2., Fuzzy - This is a "pinkie ll that is approximately 1-2 weeks old" You can tell a fuzzy by the white fuzz appearing allover the body .. Eyes closed.
3. Furry - This is a "fuzzy" whose fuzz is now turning to fur and showing color variations .. E;yes still closed and still sucking from the mother ..
4 .. Hop - This is a "furry" whose eyes are now open .. He is getting cuter. He nolonger needs to suck the mother, but will when he can .. His tail is still very short and every time you try to pick him up, he "hops" away ..
5 .. Sub-Adult ""'. r.Phis is a "furry" who has grown up .. His tail is longer, has no need to suck the mother, eats from the food tray like the adults.
6" Adult - This is a large mouse, full grown" They are able to reproduce young ..

"Critter of the Month"
The "critter" for the November meeting was frogs and toads .. Apparently most of them had already gone into hibernation, as we didn't have very many at the meeting. Those that were there were:
American Toad (Bufo americanus) "just an". Marine Toad (Bufo marinus) in a rodent cage, big. Argentine Horned Prog (Ceratophrys sp.) Green Tree Frog (Hyla cinerea) Haitian Giant Tree Frog (Hyla vasta) Grey Tree Frog (Hyla versicolor) White's Tree Frog (Litoria caerulea) African Burrowing Bullfrog (pyxicephalus adspersus)

This book is the first in-depth treatment of a major South American turtle fauna. It covers all turtles known from Venezuela including the matamata and other sidenecks (11 species), tortoises (2 species), pond and land turtles (5 species and subspecies), and the sea turtles (5 species). together comprising half of the turtle species described from the South American continent. There is an extensive discussion of the distribution and zoogeography of South American turtles and a key to species (in both English and Spanish). Each species account consists of a synonymy followed by a diagnosis; a detailed description (including shell, soft parts, color, and sexual dimorphism); and sections on size and growth, distribution, geographic variation, habitat, feeding, reproduction, economic importance, and vernacular names. The family accounts give a detailed review of the fossil history and present distribution of all genera, worldwide, but with emphasis on South America. There is also a comprehensive bibliography and a list of locality records from throughout the entire continent for all Venezuelan taxa.
The book is beautifully illustrated. There are 48 fu'Lpage plates in color, 26 of which are original watercolors and the remainder a collection of 165 photographs of both turtles and their habitats. In addition, there are two distribution maps for each species: a spot map showing the detailed Venezuelan distribution and anothe~ap ·sh_owiiiffthe continent-wide range.
The book is 414 pages, 8~ x 11 inches (21.5 x 28 cm), bound in buckram, price US $45. A spedalleatherbound patron's edition, in two volumes, is US $300. A four-page ad with sample color plates was published in the December 1982 issue of Herpetological Review, and copies may be obtained on request from Dr. Douglas H.
