PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Greetings:

I hope each of you had a relaxing Mother’s Day, a day just for you and family. I spent mine painting!

Go figure.

I wish to thank Bobbie for another wonderful project and class. What a gift we have in her expertise. I really like the underpainting technique, it

adds depth to the painting and I think this technique can be used in al-

most anything. I noticed everyone was hanging on her every word, that

is a teacher’s dream to have everyone so engaged.

I wanted to remind everyone we are having our first “begin to paint” class

August 19th. It is open to anyone who wishes to learn to paint. Chapter

members who would like to paint too just need to bring their own sup-plies. It should be a great day. Be sure to sign up or notify me if you plan

to attend.

I would like to start a regular collection of nonperishable food items for

the mobile home park. I spoke with the office and they said it would real-ly help some of the residents who are now “coach bound.” So what I’m

suggesting is each person signed up to paint that month brings one item

we can collect. Think about how that item may be used. An example would be canned tuna, so many ways to use it. Also items could be con-

diments, coffee, cleaning supplies, paper products, just to name a few. If

this works out, I will have a more organized list we can use. I will also

check with the office for perishable items needed and chapter can buy them. We have a budget for outreach so it shouldn’t be a problem.

On a new topic, this year our board will be adding almost all positions as

the current board, with the exception of Linda Camp and me, are leaving.

So the new positions we need volunteers for are, PROGRAMS (more

than one person should do this job) TREASURER, MEMBERSHIP, and WAYS AND MEANS. If you think you are interested in any of these

please let me know. We only work well if everyone pitches in.

On a last note, I have asked for any suggestions to make chapter work more smoothly. If you have an idea you think should be considered,

please contact me directly. Having one go-to person helps disseminate

information. Please do not e-mail Leslie; she just has to send it to me

anyway. Any suggestion that may change how we do business will re-quire board approval, so be sure to give me enough time to call a meeting

if that is the case.

PHP Board Meeting

May 13, 2017

A board meeting of the Palomar Heritage Painters was held Saturday, May 13, 2017, in the meeting center at San Mar-cos Mobile Home Estates. The meeting was called to order at 7:50 a.m., by President Linda Silvasy. Also in attend-ance were Secretary Linda Camp, 1st VP Programs, Kenna Perrin and Renee Molloy, Treasurer Marilyn Dixon, News-letter Editor Leslie Pilcher, San Diego Fair Committee person Charlotte Hicks, and 2nd VP Membership, Sheila El-liott. BEGINNER CLASS - Linda Silvasy discussed the upcoming Beginner Class, which will be taught by Onya Tol-masoff. The fee for the class will be $20, and flyers for the class will be displayed and distributed at various locations, including the San Marcos Mobile Home Estates. The only other expense will be $1 for the frame that will be paint-ed. Royal & Langnickel is going to donate 15 sets of brushes, which can be utilized by the students. PHP will keep the brushes afterwards, for future use. SOUND SYSTEM - it was brought up, that with the new sound system PHP uses, the old sound system is not being utilized. It was decided that the old system can be donated. TREASURER REPORT - Marilyn Dixon provided a copy of the Treasurer Report. It was also brought up that PHP will need to do a Self Audit in the near future. CHARITY - Linda Silvasy brought up several ideas for PHP to "give back" to the people at San Marcos Mobile Home Estates --- whether it be a paint day at the Mobile Home park, or provide a meal, or provide some supplies they may need, such as toilet paper or paper towels. Ideas are still being considered. SDP MEMBERSHIP - There was a general discussion of the recent attempt by SDP to raise membership fees by $25, making them $75 per year. When asked about the possibility of such a large increase, it was noted that 90% of mem-bers responded with answer number 3, "Absolutely will not or cannot pay it." Ultimately, SDP decided on a $10 in-crease, so that the new yearly membership fee will be $60 per person. There have been discussions about whether local chapters want to remain with SDP, or become separate entities. Items such as insurance and other issues would have to be further explored. SAN DIEGO FAIR - Charlotte Hicks stated that Brushwhackers will be there on July 1st, and PHP will be there on July 2nd. SEMINARS - Charlotte Hicks said that she now has sign-up sheets for the Willow Wolfe Semi-nar. President Linda Silvasy moved to close the meeting at 8:20 a.m.

Our scheduled date to demonstrate in the booth is Sunday, July 2nd. I am looking for a couple of volunteers for two hour shifts. Email me to let me know if you are interested ([email protected]). We had such a good response to the little wooden boxes for make-it/take-its last year, that we will be doing them again this year. Don’t forget, you also get a free entry ticket on the day that you volunteer as well as when you submit a project.

View from the Garage Sale Table

I will be leaving early on Saturday, June 10, as my grandsons (two) will be celebrating their high school graduation. I will be showing Merle's books and packets. One dollar for packets and two dollars for books. The table will be happy to take your unwanted painting items, if you are clearing out stuff. See you at the table on the 10th. Marilyn D.

Hummingbird Bundt Cake (Recipe from SouthernLiving.com)

Brought by Charlotte Hicks to May Paint-In

Ingredients Cake Batter 1 (8 oz) can crushed pineapple (do not drain) 1 ½ cups chopped pecans ¾ cup canola oil 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups sugar Glaze 1 teaspoon baking soda 4 ounces cream cheese, cubed and softened 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 cups sifted powdered sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 large eggs, slightly beaten 1 to 2 tablespoons milk 1 ¾ cups mashed ripe bananas (about 4 large)

Preparation 1. Prepare Cake Batter: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake pecans in a single layer in a shallow pan 8 to 10

minutes or until toasted and fragrant, stirring half way through. 2. Stir together flour and next 4 ingredients in a large bowl; stir in eggs and next 4 ingredients, stirring just until

dry ingredients are moistened. Sprinkle 1 cup toasted pecans into a greased and floured 14-cup bundt pan. Spoon batter over pecans.

3. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour to 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a long wooden pick inserted in center comes

out clean. Cool cake in a pan on a wire rack 15 minutes, remove from pan to wire rack, and cool completely (about 2 hours).

4. Prepare Glaze: Process cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla, and 1 Tbsp milk in a food processer until well

blended. Add remaining 1 Tbsp milk, 1 tsp. at a time, processing until smooth. Immediately pour glaze over cooled cake, and sprinkle remaining ½ cup toasted pecans on top of the glaze.
