HEROEs ON TRAck EvENTby Wolfgang Kaufer, NOBMWCCA member

It is always an honor to do something for our military people especially those that received injuries as a result of our wars in the Middle East. An organization in the United States called Wounded Warriors Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) sponsors different events for wounded veterans. A part of that organization is Heroest On Track (www.heroesontrack.org) which provides rides on race tracks with instructors for these special veterans as passengers at an organized Drivers’ Education Event (DE).Tim Wing asked me to chair this event for our last DE on August 14, 2011 at Nelson Ledges Road Course. I, of course, accepted that honor.

Our Chapter is the first BMW car club to provide that thrill to the Heroes On Track, as a ride of your life. This was an opportunity to ride at speeds that would get you a ticket on state roads. The event started in the morning with registration and

a “goody” bag, including tee shirts, hats, and other

items. A class room

session was provided on how to drive on a race course and the physics of how a car responds. A technical session followed, including what is checked and what is required on each car before it is permitted on track. Next, it was time to get fitted for a helmet and be strapped into an instructor’s car. Now, the highlight of the day, a track session with an instructor–an experience no one will never forget and which gave all big smiles on their faces.Noon arrived and we provided a picnic style lunch. All Heroes On Track received a Certificate of Participation and several pictures of the whole event.

The day at the track was a success. Thanks to John Ballentine from Heroes On Track who gave us this opportunity. And, all of this would not be possible without the help of all the volunteers. Again, I want to thank Tim Wing, helping me provide many preliminary items and thanks to Cindy Wing for taking all the pictures and printing them on site. My appreciation continues to Guy Foster, Howard Denney, Tim Poloski, Dave Fisher, Rhen Avner and his friend Carla, Doug Colbary, Jim Featherston, and my wife, Janet, for

organizing all the food for the picnic. We also thank all the instructors who provided the rides and Nancy Schiliro from the Wounded Warrior Project who came to the track with all the”goody” items and support.

Hallmark M design elements make a genuine contribution to meeting technical requirements. The design of the body faithfully showcases the standout characteristics of the new BMW M5. The dynamic proportions and stylishly authoritative appearance of the BMW 5 Series Sedan has been further enhanced by the addition of M-spe-cific design features which are geared precisely to meeting the technical demands of the car, making them a central element of the high-performance Sedan’s overall concept. The design of the front apron clearly embodies the supreme power of the new V8 engine. The contour lines of the bonnet converge in a V to the brand’s hallmark double-kidney grille. The wide-spread arrangement of the customary M black slats – like the three large air intakes in the lower section of the apron – emphasise the cooling air requirement of the engine behind the grille. At the lower edge of the front end, air-channelling flaps developed on the race track ensure optimised aerodynamics. The standard-fitted bi-xenon headlights generate daytime running light with visually unique LED light rings. Cutting across the top of the customary twin round headlights are LED accent lights to create the characteristic intent look – both during the day and in night-time driving. The long wheelbase, set-back passenger compartment and high-gloss black side window borders clearly accentuate the stretched silhouette of the new BMW M5. Prominently flared, muscular wheel arches, wheels sitting flush with the bodywork and lowered suspension enhance the car’s sport-ing presence when viewed from the side. The model-specific 19-inch M light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design also assist in this regard. The side skirts of the new BMW M5 also have a design very much of their own. The aerodynamically honed form of the exterior mirrors is accentuated by a

horizontal colour gradation, while the front side panels sport a fresh take on the hallmark M gills. The bespoke rear apron draws particular attention to the drive forces channelled through the rear wheels. A diffuser integrated into the lower edge of the apron provides efficient airflow through the back end of the underfloor section. A signature M feature of the new BMW M5 is the twin-pipe exhaust system, whose tailpipes are positioned wide to either side of the diffuser. The subtle gurney-style rear spoiler on the boot lid also aids the car’s aerodynamics.High performance applies to power transfer as well: the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic. The new BMW M5 is kitted out with a seven-speed double-clutch transmission to ensure that the transfer of engine output to the rear wheels serves up the time-honoured M experience. The M DCT Drivelogic system developed specially for the M5 delivers exceptionally fast and clean gear changes both in automated mode (D) and manual (S). The model-specific M gear selector allows the driver to choose between D and S mode, and to engage reverse. It also offers a sequential shift pattern for the manual gearshift mode. Alternatively, the driver can also change gears manually using the standard-fitted shift paddles on the steering wheel.M DCT Drivelogic offers three shift programs in S and D mode. When the stability control system is switched off, the Launch Control function allows the driver to achieve the maximum acceleration force possible from a standstill – as permitted by the condition of the road – by pressing the accelerator down with maximum force. Meanwhile, in stop-start traffic, comfort is further enhanced by the new Low Speed Assistance function.

The short drive will end at the Main Street Tavern in Garrettsville. The brewmeister will talk to us briefly about what he’s done and doing. Then, beer samples can be ordered at your table while you partake of the menu (see msg-brew.com/images/Menu_Food.pdf) fare and locally crafted beers. If the weather’s good, you can take a stroll and check out the mill works by the bridge. To reserve your tour spot and meal seat contact C. L. TEcH TIPs Q&A

2006 X3 3.0iQ: I received the OBD-II error msg P0171, P0174, P0411 on my X3. The check engine light is on and the idle is rough. What part do I need to change?A: The P0411 code is: Secondary Air System – Low Flow. This is saying that the air flow from the secondary air injection system is lower than what it should be. This could be due to a failing pump, check valve, Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF – specifically for the secondary air system), clogged ports in the cylinder head (becoming a common issue, unfortunately) and other system control issues. Further diagnosis will be required to determine if the pump and the rest of the system are working properly. If they are, you may have clogged ports. 2000 540iQ: My 2000 540i is nearing the 125k mile mark and everything on it is running great. There is one little issue that I can’t for the life of me figure out what is happening. There is an audible whining inside the care when the car is moving. It usually happens after a few miles of driving and it’s more pronounced after longer drives. Initially I thought it was something with the speakers but when I shut off the radio power it still continued. I did the same with the AC and heating fans and it has no effect on it. The only thing that does have any affect on it is the actual speed of the car. And I checked to see if it was RPM related and it’s not… it’s simply a byproduct of the car’s wheel speed. It’s not a leak in the window seals either because it is much to audible at very low speeds to be from air entering the vehicle. Is this something to do with the alternator or something that is still feeding some static or noise through the speakers even after they are shut off? I am thoroughly confused.A: From your description, we believe you may be hearing gear or bearing noise from the differential or a wheel bearing. Since we cannot drive the car, we really can’t narrow it down much further. Can you notice if the sound changes as you transition from minor acceleration to steady state running to deceleration? Try to keep the car at about the same speed (so the sound does not change do to a speed change) and feather the throttle in and out a bit. Does the sound change as you transition from minor acceleration to minor deceleration? If the sound does change in this testing, it is likely from the differential. In this case, change the fluid, install a good synthetic fluid, usch as our Red Line or Lubro-Moly differ-ential fluids. In the case of a potentially noisy differential, we would recommend the Red Line 75w-140 weight fluid. We would also recommend adding the Lubro-Moly Molybde-num Disulfide (MoS2 or Moly) gear additive (mix the Moly paste with the fluid before adding the fluid to the differential and drive the car as soon as possible, for 10 to 20 miles, or more). If the differential is the source of the whine, it will be

due to either gear or bearing wear inside the assembly. The thicker fluid and the Moly additive may help to quiet it down and extend the usable life of the assembly. If the sound does not change with throttle changes (as outlined above), it may be due to a wheel bearing or another less common issue. We would recommend that you have a knowledgeable technician drive the car, if the source has not become obvious through this testing.1992 735iQ: I replaced front and back brakes. I was told it should reset itself, so far it has not. I followed some instructions on the Bavarian blog to no effect. I can usually reset my oil chance light. The sensors look good.A: The older model BMWs do not have any actual resets for the brake wear warning light. If all is functioning as it should, the warning will go out when the sensor wires are replaced. As implied in the prior sentence, once the light does come on, the sensor wire (the one that has turned the light on, be it the left-front or the right-rear) will indeed need to be replaced. If the brake pads are being replaced prior to the warning light coming on, the sensor wires can be reused. However, with this noted, it is not uncommon for the old sensor wires to break when the attempt is made to transfer them from the old pads to the new pads. Therefore, we rec-ommend new sensor wires for all brake pad replacements. If the warning light was on prior to the pad replacement, and the sensor wire is not replaced, the warning light will likely stay on. The sensor wire circuit can be tested by using a short length of wire to connect ( jumper) the two terminals in the vehicle side of the sensor wire harness plug (simply make a U shape in the wire and insert the stripped wire ends into the two contact terminals in the plug housing). Do this for both the front and the rear circuits. If the light goes off when one of the circuits is jumpered, then the sensor wire that was plugged in to this circuit is likely faulty. If the light is still on with both the rear and the front circuits jumpered, there is likely a fault in the sensor wire warning circuit and this will require further diagnostics.1999 740iQ: I recently purchased a 99 740i sport with 120K miles. I notice that after a short period of driving heat is radiated from the radio. The heat is very intense and if you touch it for a minute or 2 it could burn your hand. This heat is radiated with the temperature controls tuned off. Any ideas on why this happens and what i may be able to do to correct it or is it typical?A: What you have described is typically normal. Of course, you could be generating more heat than “normal”, but these units do indeed generate enough heat to be considered as hot.

This article by the late David E. Davis (1930-2011) first appeared in the April 1968 issue of Car & Driver. It’s historically significant (or at least interesting) in two ways. Mr. Davis’ words introduced the BMW brand to a broad audience in the U.S. during a time when V-8 powered muscle cars ruled the roads. It also is believed to have lead to his termination (or retirement) from Car & Driver due to his criticism of the stock Blaupunkt radio (a C&D advertiser at that time) in the test vehicle. This article is being reproduce both for its historical significance to our club marque and as a tribute to David E. Davis who passed away March 27, 2011. R.I.P.

For a number of years there has been a very active Z-Roadster group (the “Zbimmers”) within the chapter. We take monthly drives April - October and try to gather socially in the “cooler months.” One of those drives took a group of about eight cars to Salineville, Ohio, some time back. Finding “facilities” is often a challenge in rural Ohio. As a last resort, our drive leader that day, Cindy Reller, took us into the parking lot of the local IGA grocery store. She went in and asked the store manager if we could use the employee

restrooms since there were no public facilities for miles and miles. While we were doing so, one of the young employees who was bagging groceries noticed the cars and some of us milling around in the parking lot. He got so excited at the sight of eight Z’s parked together that he purchased a disposable camera (this was the pre-digital, pre-cell phone camera days!) and started taking shots of the cars. That lead to a pleasant conversation with the nice young man.... and THAT lead to what I believe was the first (but not the last) time we were asked the question - “are you all related?”. Little does he know, that young man and his question became a significant part of the ZBimmers lore.
