Superintendent’s
Corner
It is finally spring and baseball, softball and tennis are on the grass fields and the courts as they should be. It took a bit longer than usual, but the temperature seems to have taken a turn for the better. Thoughts of summer are starting to creep into everyone's mind especially the students. Students are starting to think about what they are going to do for the summer; where they might work, if they will go to camp, or just what fun activities they may want to do with their families and friends on the long hot days soon to come. But, now more than ever, we need to keep our students focused on their academics for a few more weeks. We do not want to see a great year of hard work get ruined because “summerites” has taken over. Help your student stay focused and soon school will be out and all their summer plans can come to fruition. For now, we need to continue to create an atmosphere where they can be academically successful.
Just a reminder, we will have our annual budget vote on May 15th at 12:00 noon until 8:00 pm in the hall outside the gymnasium.
All the information that you need to make an informed vote is presented in this newsletter. If you come out and vote in the evening please plan on attending our middle and high school concert which begins at 7:00 pm. The students have worked extremely hard and would love a full house.
Johnsburg Central School will be holding a public informational meeting on June 14, 2018 on school safety and security. A facilitator will open the meeting by giving information that has been gathered locally and nationally on the topic. There will then be an opportunity to have the community ask questions as well as give their thoughts on the subject. Everyone in the community is invited and encouraged to attend, even if you do not have a student in the school this is a community issue and all viewpoints are needed.

Maggie received a trophy from Fidelis Care, a prize from Mrs. Flanagan, and a set of Crayola markers for her classroom. Great job, Maggie!
Schoolstore.com
Stephen Millington - 4th Grade
Fourth grader, Stephen Millington, was the winner of “Bob” the Minion robot. Students who are participating in the Schoolstore.com fundraiser each had a chance to win. Congratulations, Stephen! Thank you to all who are participating.
MakerSpace We are excited about creating a MakerSpace for grades K-6 for the 2018-2019 school year and beyond. MakerSpace will provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they deeply engage in science, engineering and tinkering. A MakerSpace is not solely a science lab, woodshop, computer lab or art room, but all four of these in one space. This space will allow us to embed the principles of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) into one special area. MakerSpace Item Needed Throughout the school year, we will be reaching out to the community to donate items needed for our MakerSpace. The first item we are asking for are Legos. Legos of all sizes can be brought to your child’s teacher or the principal’s office at any time between now and September. These Legos will help us to get one of our MakerSpace stations up and running. Thank you.

Buy a Brick Program To help raise money for our outdoor classroom, JCS continues our brick campaign. Personally engraved bricks will be placed on the floor in the pavilion. Go to www.bricksrus.com/order/jcs to place an on-line order, pick up an order form in the principal’s office, or see the attachments to this newsletter.
“Raise the Roof” The “Raise the Roof” fundraising campaign continues to go well. We are planning to build our outdoor classroom this summer! Thanks to those who have helped out, purchased items, or donated to the cause. Jaguar spirit items will be for sale at many home games and in the principal’s office throughout the school year. Stop by and take a look!
NYS Grade 3-8 Testing The NYS Math test for grades 3-8 will be given on Tuesday, May 1st & Wednesday, May 2nd. NYS Science 4 & 8 Testing
Science 8 Written Exam - June 4th Performance Exam - May 29th & 30th. Science 4 Written Exam - June 4th Performance Exam - May 24th.
Lost & Found Is your child missing some clothing items? Have them check Lost & Found in the area across from the nurse’s office.
ASP Parent Reminder! Our After School Program (ASP) runs M-F from 2:40-4:45 for grades K-6. This program is for students of working parents only. If you are not working during the ASP hours, your child should not be attending the program.
REMINDER PARENTS: For your child’s
safety, no one can go anywhere but home on the
bus without a note or phone call from a parent.
(This includes the Late Bus as well) Grade nor
age matters. When students sign up for a
sport, we do not need a note regarding the late
bus unless they are going someplace other than
home. This also applies to leaving school early;
students need parental permission to leave the
school grounds for any reason. Please let your
child(ren) know these rules. Thank you.
Incoming Prekindergarten at JCS
If your child(ren) will be 4 years old prior to
December 1, 2018, they are eligible to attend

you prefer an AM or PM session, if it becomes
necessary to have two sessions of pre-k. We
cannot guarantee that your child will be placed in
the session that you prefer. Placement will be
determined by a first come, first-served basis.
Please fill out and return your packets as soon as
possible.

The National Junior and Senior Honor Societies would like to thank everyone who donated to the Pennies for
Patients coin drive in the month of March. As a school,
we collected over $700 to help raise awareness and
funds in honor of the children and adults fighting blood
cancers -well over our original goal of $400! Special
appreciation goes to Mrs. Mosher’s 2nd-grade
students, who collected over $82 by themselves, and
to the 10th-grade class, who collected nearly $110!
Both classes will receive a small prize to show our
gratitude for their generosity. Honorable mentions also
go to Mrs. Morris’ 4th grade and Mrs. Murtagh’s 6th
grade, each of whom collected nearly $80 as well! On
behalf of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, we
would like to once again thank everyone who
participated in this coin drive.
Reminder: Grades Pre K, Kindergarten, Second,
Fourth, Seventh and Tenth need a physical exam
by their doctor.
There are immunizations required for entry into
Grade 6 and Grade 12. Please check with your
doctor.
Participation in sports requires having a recent
physical exam on file in the Health Office.
(completed within the last 12 months). Call the
Nurse’s Office at 518-251-2921 extension 5 if you
have no insurance to cover this exam.
Keep in mind that practice for fall sports usually
begin in mid-August. If your student athlete need
to have an updated physical to play they will need
to get one before the start of practice this summer.
Call Carol Fosdick if you have any questions.
Maura Fox, one of Johnsburg Central School’s Speech Pathologists, was recently honored for her dedication for 20 years to Make-A-Wish Northeast New York for children with potentially life-threatening illnesses. She aims to be the agent of change, guiding kids toward their full potential. As a licensed speech/language pathologist, she is particularly effective with children who may be on the autism spectrum or have emotional and behavioral deficits. We are very proud to have her as a member of our JCS family

Board Members
Election of two (2) Board Members
Rachel DeGroat: I love the town of Johnsburg. My husband and I moved here from Ohio to be near family more than thirteen years ago. We have five children currently attending elementary, middle and high school and I am a stay at home mom. My family is committed to this community and the children and families in it. As a family, we are involved in Calvary Bible Church and a member of the Board of Education for the last six years. I have a passion for education. I am excited to seek learning in school and out of school. In our home, we do lots of reading and exploring. During the summer and on weekends as a family we enjoy hiking, camping, discovering the outdoors and gardening. I care deeply about what goes on at JCS. I see a way to creatively use our resources. It would be my privilege to continue to serve on the JCS School Board to help shape the education of the children of our area, the area where my children will grow up and call home. JCS is a great school and my goal is to represent JCS in the best interest of the students and their families all while being mindful of budgetary constraints.
Sarah Williams:
My name is Sarah Williams and I have owned Cafe Sarah on Main Street for 17 years. I am a native of Lockport, New York, and spent my childhood visiting family friends in North Creek. Eventually my entire family settled here and I am proud to call North Creek my home. My husband Jeremy has taught at Queensbury Middle School for the last 18 years. We have three children: Helena is in ninth grade, Caroline is in sixth grade, and Lucia is in 4th grade. They are actively involved in sports and music at JCS. I hope to bring my perspective as a business owner and parent to the Johnsburg school board.

Over 1,200,000 Families Did This!
Over 1,200,000 families have signed up to receive free children’s books for their children. This includes nearly 100
families in the Town of Johnsburg who have also enrolled their kids in the Imagination Library program. And it’s free
and easy! Dolly Parton started an international program, Imagination Library, for any child from birth until their 5th
birthday to have a quality children’s book mailed directly to their home each month. She understands the value of
books in the life of a child. There is no cost to you because our local chapter receives generous grant funding from the
Glenn and Carol Pearsall Foundation as well as the Charles R. Wood Foundation. Interested? Just sign up… registration
forms are available at JCS, the town library, or attached to the monthly JCS Newsletter. Thanks, Ann Arsenault
