A/E: Who encouraged you to be a superintendent, and what do you like best about the job?
DL: I had a few influential educational mentors along the way that encouraged me to be Superintendent. Most
recently, the Superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools encouraged me being a Superintendent.
What I love about the Superintendency is ensuring a coherent, well-articulated, and comprehensive educa -
tional system is in place for our students K-12. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know the students and families
of West Allegheny and attending student events where our students showcase their talents.
A/E: Have you always been in education?
DL: I did not start my University studies in education. I started out in Health Sciences as a pre-med, physical
therapy student.
A/E: What do you like best about Donaldson, and why did you choose to be a superintendent at W.A.?
DL: I love that Donaldson has earned a National Blue Ribbon of Excellence. It exemplifies the excellence that
the staff embodies and the expectations they have for our Donaldson students. I truly love being the Super-
intendent of West Allegheny. I fell in love with the District the more I learned about it and the more I inter
acted with the School Board during the interview process. The direction the District desires to go is a good
fit with my experience as an academic superintendent and my passion for excellence.
A/E: Did you come from a large or small family and how did they help you?
DL: I come from a small family. I have one older sister, Nancy. My family has always been supportive and
encouraged me to do whatever makes me happy. They are my constant cheerleaders.
A/E: What city are you originally from?
DL: I am from Pittsburgh. I grew up in the North Allegheny School District where my mother was a teacher.
A/E: Do you have any pets, and if so what are their names?
DL: I have had lots of pets throughout my life. I am an animal lover. I currently have one dog. She is an
American Staffordshire Terrier named Layla. She is 4 ½ years old. I rescued her from the animal rescue
league in Pittsburgh.

On July 1, 2014, the West Alle-
gheny School District welcomed
a new superintendent, Dr. Lip-
pert. Dr. Lippert is the former
CAO (Chief Academic Officer)
of the Pittsburgh Public Schools.
She was born in 1973, graduated
from the University of Pittsburgh,
and loved to play the trumpet when
she was young. Dr. Lippert plans on
helping to build relationships in our
district and professional learning
communities. We had the oppor-
tunity to interview Dr. Lippert
which is recorded below.

DONALDSON WELCOMES WILSON TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
By Reese Bielecki and Kate Miller
This year, several Wilson teachers’ classrooms were moved to Donaldson due to the fact that Wilson Elementary is being
renovated. They teach on the first floor in the D wing where administration was housed for the past few years. Wilson
students have the opportunity to eat lunch at the same lunch period as the Donaldson students in the same grade level. In
the morning, Wilson students take their usual bus to Wilson, and then transfer to another bus that brings them to Don-
aldson. In the afternoon, Wilson students take a bus to Wilson, and then transfer to another bus which takes them home.
Wilson also has some special classes such as art and music at Donaldson and some specials at Wilson. We are very happy
to have the Wilson teachers and students at Donaldson. We had the opportunity to interview the Wilson teachers and ask
the following questions: What grade level do you teach? What is the best and most difficult part about teaching at Don-
aldson? What is your favorite subject to teach? How long have you been a teacher?
Miss Franks teaches 3rd grade. She enjoys
being in a clean and quiet environment.
She also likes teaching reading skills, and
has been a teacher for 7 years.

and has been a teacher for 10 years.
Mrs. Zdinak teaches 1st grade. She
enjoys working with the Donaldson
teachers. She also likes teaching math,
and has been a teacher for 19 years.
Miss Cornelius teaches 2nd grade. She
enjoys making new friends. She also
likes teaching Language Arts. She has
been a teacher for 4 years, but was a
substitute for 3 years.
Mrs. Wiedinger teaches 3rd and 4th grade
Learning Support. She enjoys teaching
with her friends from Wilson and Don-
aldson and teaching reading. She has
been a teacher for over 15 years.

years.
Mrs. Werling is a literacy coach. She
teaches 2nd through 5th grade. She enjoys
teaching at both Wilson and Donaldson. She
also likes teaching reading, and has been a
teacher for 5 years.
Miss Preziosi is a literacy coach. She
teaches 2nd through 4th grade, and enjoys
having the opportunity to work with such
motivated learners. She has been a
teacher for 5 years.
Mrs. Hart (left) teaches 1st grade. She
enjoys that the people are all so friendly
and helpful. She also likes teaching read-
ing, has been a teacher for 25 years, and
retired in October.
Mrs. McMullen (right) teaches 1st grade.
She enjoys Donaldson because it is a beauti-
ful school. She also likes teaching reading,
has been a teacher for 6 years, and replaced
Mrs. Hart.
Donaldson Elementary has a new pavil-
ion. It was built to honor Tanya
Curigliano, former teacher of West Alle-
gheny. Jack Curigliano, her husband, and
other volunteers including township
workers, built this pavilion over the sum-
mer. The construction began at the end
of the 2013-2014 school year. The Home
Depot along with family, friends, and
Donaldson staff supplied some of the
materials for the job. It is a wooden
structure on a cement pad housing two
metal picnic tables. The pavilion took two
months to build, and was finished in time
for school to start on September 2, 2014.
The pavilion was dedicated on September
12, 2014 with family, friends, faculty
members, and Donaldson staff in attend-
ance.

DONALDSON ADDS NEW TEACHERS TO THE LINE-UP By Ella Chandler and Amelia Wheatley
EXCITING NEW ON-LINE
MATH PROGRAM COMES
TO DONALDSON By: Emily Saggio
Donaldson Elementary has chosen First in Math as
a math education website. All students are wel-
come to participate in the First in Math online
program. You can access this site at school, or at
home. All you need is a password and a comput-
er. The First in Math program helps students mas-
ter fundamental and advanced math skills. It just
feels like a game. You can do problems from addi-
tion to advanced algebra. If you have a math test
to study for, you can go on the site and do some
practice questions. According to the First in Math
website, “Students using First in Math have shown
dramatic increases in their math scores, from top
students to math challenged learners”. Mrs.
Koraido, sponsor of the program, announces the
top players of the week every Monday morning
and posts the top players and classrooms in the
entryway on the second floor. She also an-
nounces the amount of total stickers students
have earned. To date Donaldson Elementary
School has collected 108,488 stickers and has
completed 325,464 math problems. You only
have to play a few minutes a day to increase your
math skills and your overall performance. “From
what I can tell so far,” says Mrs. Koraido,
“Students seem to enjoy the gaming aspect of First
in Math the most. Learning the ‘math’ is the great
outcome that occurs as the result of the gaming
experience.” Mrs. Koraido hopes to continue
this program next year. This year, Mrs. Koraido
attended the First in Math workshop at the Alle-
gheny Intermediate Unit. As a result. Donaldson
is receiving a free license for every student in the
building to participate in the program. Next year,
funding will be required.

PTA SPONSORS REFLECTIONS CONTEST
By Erica Prologo, Kali Burke,
and Samantha Goldstrohm
Winners of the PTA Reflections Contest
were: Emily Saggio ((left) and Sarah
Rankin (right).
Reflections, a contest to express draw-
ings, film, dance, literature, photography,
and music, has been sponsored by the
National PTA since 1969. Themes for
each year are derived from a contest in
which students can submit ideas. The
theme this year was “The World Would
be a Better Place if…” Due date for origi-
nal works was October 23, 2014. The
winners of the contest were 5th grader,
Emily Saggio and 4th grader, Sarah Rankin.
Winners were announced on November
5, 2014. All students who submitted a
project enjoyed an ice cream party, and all
grade levels were able to participate.

Mrs. Panucci taught at Trinity
School District before coming to
WA. She loves to teach every
subject, and has been teaching for
five years. Mrs. Panucci is married
and has a dog, Lily; named after
Harry Potter’s mother. Mrs.

because she loves children and
enjoys helping them. She attended
She went to Westminster
College in New Wilmington,
PA. Her favorite subject has
always been math. This is her
first job as a teacher. In her
leisure time, she likes to
coach soccer and hang out
with her friends. Miss Tissue
is super excited to be teaching
here at Donaldson. “The stu-
dents and staff are so friendly
and kind,” she said. We are
very glad to have all four of
these teachers at Donaldson.
Slippery Rock University, and
taught at other places before
Donaldson. Mrs. Hamilton en-
joys all subjects, and has been
teaching for a total of ten years.
Her husband’s name is Joe and
they have four daughters. She is
honored to be a fifth grade
teacher here. Miss Tissue
chose to be a teacher at Don-
aldson because she attended
WA as a student, and she could
not imagine being anywhere
else!
This year, we welcomed four
new teachers to the Donaldson
Elementary School faculty. Mrs.
Panucci and Miss Tissue are
both learning support teachers.
Mrs. Stout and Mrs. Hamil-
ton are both fifth grade teach-
ers. We had the opportunity to
ask them a few questions, and
this is what we discovered:
Influenced by her own teachers, Mrs. Stout always dreamed of
being a teacher. She attended
Penn State and Slippery Rock
Universities and has taught in
many areas. Mrs. Stout loves to
teach all subjects, which makes
her job very exciting. She met
her husband at Penn State, has
four children, and really enjoys
doing family activities. Mrs. Pa-
nucci chose to be a teacher at
Donaldson because she wanted
to work with all of the hard
working students here at WA,

5TH GRADERS BUILD NATIVE AMERICAN HOUSES By Sierra Mangan and Julia Prologo
This year, the 5th grade students had an assignment to create a Native American
Shelter. They had to choose either a teepee, igloo, longhouse, hogan, wigwam,
or pueblo. The projects were displayed in two places: the showcases in the of-
fice and in the 4th and 5th grade hallway. The 5th graders started creating their
projects in early September and the projects were due on October 1st. Students
had a wide selection of materials to use; everything from grass and sticks in your
back yard to anything that a craft store has to offer. The students made the pro-
jects because they were learning about Native Americans in Social Studies and
to display them for Open House. The most popular shelter was teepee, the least
popular shelter was the hogan. 5th graders had fun creating their projects, pre-
senting them to their class, and all the while learning about Native Americans!

HALLOWEEN CELEBRATED WITH PARADE AND CLASS PARTIES
By: Emily Saggio and Rachel Mamula
The 2014 Donaldson Elementary
School Open House was a huge suc-
cess. This event occurred on October
2nd from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Our open
house welcomed families, students,
friends, staff, and others. They came to
the school to see student art work,
classrooms, and to meet the teachers.
This amazing event wouldn’t have hap-
pened if we didn’t have the terrific staff
and students for which we are thankful.
The staff and students prepared the
school with art projects, Native Ameri-
can houses, student collages, and rock-
et ships for blasting off a new school
year. Mrs. Koraido also had a table in
the front hallway signing students up
for Independent Study projects, and the
Cone of Ice truck made an appearance,
which was the best part of all!

ATTEND VIRTUAL
CONFERENCE
By Summer Miller and Olivia Norris
On Monday, October 20, 2014, a vir-
tual conference was held at Don-
aldson. Author Mac Barnett and illus-
trator Jon Klassen presented their
new book Sam and Dave Dig a Hole.
Mr. Barnett and Mr. Klassen “dangled
the prospect of fantastic subterranean
treasure before readers”. Families
from Donaldson and Wilson partici-
pated in this event. On the following
Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., at the Carnegie
Library Lecture Hall in Oakland, all
families had the opportunity to get
their books signed, ask questions dur-
ing the Q and A session and enjoy the
lemonade reception after the pro-
gram. This event was sponsored by
Mrs. Schultz, Donaldson librarian.
The Josh and Gab Show is an anti bullying campaign presented to
elementary students all over the western Pennsylvania area.
Josh, the lead singer, and Gab, the drummer write their own
songs and tell about their own bullying experiences. They en-
courage students to stand up to bullies, and ask students ques-
tions about bullying. This assembly in September was sponsored
by the Donaldson PTA. We hope they come back next year!
139 STUDENTS COMPLETE INDEPENDENT PROJECTS By Olivia Norris and Summer Miller
This year, students from 1st to 5th grades participated in the Independent Studies Pro-
gram, sponsored by Mrs. Koraido, Gifted Support Teacher. Through the Independent
Studies Program, students research topics of their own choice and share their findings
in movies, power points, blogs, websites, illustrations, experiments, posters, Venn dia-
grams, videos, cartoons, charts, graphs, puppet shows, models, collages, dioramas,
scrapbooks, puzzles, games, paintings, or other desired formats. Independent Study
topics are age, grade level, and school appropriate. Upon project completion, students
present projects to their peers in their own classrooms. Students then take their final
project to Mrs. Koraido, where each student is awarded a prize for participation. Mrs.
Koraido’s gifted support students then review the projects and write “Did You
Know…” segments based on the main elements of the project. The “Did You
Know…” segments are read on the morning announcements each day of the school
year. The projects are then displayed in the school halls for all to enjoy and for the
Band and Chorus Concerts. All students who complete an Independent Study Project
are eligible for an Independent Study wrap party with Mrs. Koraido. There were 139
Independent Study Projects completed in December of 2014. All Donaldson students
will have another opportunity to participate in the Independent Study Program in the
spring of 2015. Mrs. Koraido would like to thank all the students who completed Inde-
pendent Study projects and is looking forward to yet another learning experience!
GEOLOGIST VISITS 3RD GRADE By: Joseph Pustover and Connor Giura
Geologist Jeff Smith visited 3rd graders on Octo-
ber 17th. The virtual field trip and program was
arranged by the 3rd grade teachers. The pur-
pose of Mr. Smith’s visit was to teach students
about geodes; which provided an extension ac-
tivity to the 3rd grade Rocks and Minerals science
unit. Through a virtual field trip, students were
able to explore a mine in Mexico. Following the
virtual tour, Mr. Smith gave every student a ge-
ode- a rock with crystals in the center. The
geodes were cut in the classroom by the use of
machinery. Mr. Smith is a manager and a Princi-
pal Geologist at URS Corporation. He is also a
project manager at AECOM.

Donaldson Elementary School held
a Halloween parade on Thursday,
October 30, 2014 at 1:00 pm. At
this parade, students from 1st to 5th
grade marched outside showing off
their Halloween costumes. The kin-
dergarten students sat on the side
walk of the school watching the
older kids as they paraded by in a
variety of costumes. Elsa and Ana
from Disney’s ‘Frozen’ made a
spectacular appearance this year.
The West Allegheny High
School Band also joined in the
fun. They led the parade playing
songs like “Ghost Busters’’ and
Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
Parents and loved ones stood to
the side taking pictures and vide-
os of their children. Once the
parade was over, the students
went back to their classroom
for a party. It was a great way to
celebrate Halloween.

5TH GRADE STUDENTS PRESENT PROGRAM TO HONOR LOCAL VETS By Emily Saggio
Colors presented by WA ROTC
On Friday, November 14th, the stu-
dents at Donaldson Elementary School
presented a program to honor veterans and
their service to our country. Veterans Day is
a holiday to honor veterans that have served,
or are presently serving in the military. The
program was sponsored by Mrs. Schultz and
Mrs. Vestal and included poems, singing, and
power point presentations. Gift bags were
also given to the veterans that were honored.
A lot of advanced preparation was need-
ed to put the program together. First, stu-
dents interviewed veterans they knew—
neighbor, family member, or friend. After
the interview, the students created Power-
Points and wrote introductory paragraphs of
their veteran. Other groups of students re-
searched and wrote reports on national sym-
bols, which were included in the program. The
fifth graders used their library and computer
times to complete these activities. All veterans were welcome to attend the
presentation. Students sang songs led by Mrs.
Mahramas, music teacher. At the conclusion of
the program, refreshments were enjoyed in the
cafeteria. This program, said to be “the first
annual”, proved to be a great way to honor
and thank veterans.

WAEA SPONSORS TREES AT CLINTON PARK
By: Connor Giura
WAEA members and families decorated Christmas trees for the celebra-
tion of lights at Clinton Park. They decorated two trees: one in honor
and memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy
and one to honor our military troops. On Sunday Nov. 16th, 13 angels for
the 13 victims of the Sandy Hook School tragedy were placed on one of
the trees. This tree also had a green and white theme, which are the
school colors of Sandy Hook Elementary. The other tree was decorated
in red, white, and blue to honor our nation’s military. Each year the park
gets many visitors to enjoy the festive lights and decorated trees.
DONALDSON STUDENTS PRESENT CONCERT By : Erica Prologo, Samantha Goldstohm, and Kali Burke

formed a great concert on December
17, 2014 at Donaldson Elementary
School. The 4th grade band students and
the 5th grade band and chorus students
practiced diligently at school for three
months. Some of the musical elections
for the chorus included: In Summer, Let
it Go, Do you Wanna Build a Snowman,
and Happy Winter. Some 5th grade band
songs were: Rudy’s Cha Cha, Little Drummer
Boy, and Merry Christmas to All. The 4th grade
band musical selections included: Tuning Note

the implant itself isn’t painful. Anya will
be able to do all of the physical activi-

which means coming to school! Anya’s
Army, a fundraising venture, was start-
ed by cousins of Anya’s father as a way
to show support to Anya. A fourth
grade parent from Mrs. King’s class
wanted to have a fundraiser for Anya
and her family. So, Mrs. Rose and Mrs.
King together decided on a Blue and
Green Day where students and staff
wore blue and green apparel to school.
Also, a team of parents worked to pro-
vide hundreds of hair streaks for $1
