Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána are asking everyone visiting attractions and amenities including

beaches and other public areas in the county to adhere to public health guidelines and social distancing requirements to limit the spread of the coronavirus.Increased monitoring of public car parks at beaches and other public spaces is being undertaken to ensure that visitors to the county can enjoy these amenities in a safe way and in the interests of public health.Kerry County Council and An Garda Síochána are reminding everyone that the congregation of large numbers in public spaces in the absence of social distancing is contrary to the advice and guidance of the National Public Health Emergency Team.Council Chief Executive, Moira Murrell and Chief Superintendent of the Kerry Garda Division, Eileen Foster are appealing to everyone in the community as well as visitors to the county to cooperate and act responsibly for the benefit of public health.

Stick to the public health guidelines say Gardai and Kerry County Council

Kerry chambers along with Kerry County Council have this

week launched a a new initiative to support local business. The Kerry Gift Card is being launched to encourage people in Kerry to shop locally and spend locally. The card will be available to the public in the coming weeks and today, a call was made to businesses across the county to register their interest and sign up to participate in the new Gift Card programmes.Speaking at the launch, Paul Sherry of Killarney Chamber said “It is vital that once this card is launched that the Corporate Sector, and members of the public use this card to support local businesses. When it comes to Christmas gifts, birthday presents and rewarding staff then the Kerry Gift Card is the only option that ensures the money stays within the county”Operated by One4All through Tralee Chamber, the Kerry Gift Card will be available for businesses right throughout the county and will allow shoppers to spend money in their outlets and on their services. The card is being supported by the Chambers throughout Kerry and Kerry County Council in order to generate much needed local spend.Speaking at the launch Mayor of Kerry Councillor Patrick Connor-Scarteen welcomed the initiative: “Kerry Chambers and Kerry County

Council have been working closely together in recent months on practical and meaningful ways in which businesses can be supported through the current economic difficulties. This new Kerry Gift Card is an ideal way for people in the county to support their local shops and businesses.”The Kerry Gift Card will be launched to the business community of Kerry over the coming weeks in order to help as many businesses as possible in the county to sign up. Businesses who are interested are being asked to contact Ken in Tralee Chamber by emailing [email protected] The business community are being urged to sign up to the card to be

ready for its public launch in September. Ken Tobin explained “The card will be marketed quite heavily by the Chambers in Kerry and One4All, and when launched will be available online and through key Post-Point locations throughout the County. One4All will also be directly engaging with the corporate sector, who we will be urging to support the Kerry Gift Card by rewarding their staff”.Businesses will be contacted by email during the coming weeks by the various Chambers in Kerry to introduce them to the One4All team, and businesses interested in signing up straight away should email [email protected] for further information.

In her column with the Killarney Outlook - Marie takes to the highways and byways meeting locals and telling their story

After 16 years away from English soccer’s top division, Leeds United have claimed their coveted spot in the Premier League last Friday. “I’ve been following Leeds since the early 70’s Marie. We’ve had our ups and downs and I have been to many so games with this crew here before us. The photo Skip is holding, there’s a story behind that….. Let me tell you” Paudie O’Callaghan told me. Oh goodie, I love a good story. “Continue Paudie”. “In 1991 Manchester United fans flooded the Fáilte having won the UEFA Cup Winners Cup against Barcelona. The slagging was unbearable but we took it. The following year in 1992 Leeds won the old first division title so we made a date to visit the Stretford End Bar on New Street which was owned by Man U supporter John Lyne (Lyno) to get our own back. It’s great to be here today with the same crew to celebrate” Paudie told me.“That was a great day” Connie O’Shea (Flash) our local friendly postman continued. “There were no mobile phones at the time Marie. My wife Mary went across the road to Christy Healy’s and bought a disposable camera and Seanie McCarthy (RIP), who worked at Lyno’s behind the bar (and also with Mary at the Post Office) took this photo of us all at the Stretford End. We got great craic out of it as Seanie was a huge Man United fan.“I’ve been following Leeds since 1964 and I’ve two sons brainwashed as Leeds United fans” Jeremiah (Skip) Buckley told me. “One is named after me and one is named after Gordon Strachan. My boys travel a few times a year to see Leeds play. I will only travel on land and sea so when I go, I travel by boat. My first trip was in 1993 to see Leeds V Arsenal”. Skip is well known locally as he worked in Liebherr, with the Killarney Town Council & painted Killarney’s Cathedral when it was renovated last. “All my boys here are true whites. My daughter Patricia organised today’s gathering behind closed doors and only told me this morning so thank you very much for coming Marie. I’ll be framing the photo and it will sit in pride of place at my home here in St Brendan’s Terrace” Skip said. I was thrilled with the thoughts of one capture meaning the absolute world to Skip. I don’t follow soccer much but I can definitely say that while this bunch were miles away from Elland Road and from gathering at any of our local bars, nothing could

In her column with the Killarney Outlook - Marie takes to the highways and byways meeting locals and telling their story

“The 12th March at 11am, Leo Varadkar’s announcement to Ireland…. I will never forget that day for as long as I live” Sabrina told me. With just 15 days to go before their big wedding day, Sabrina Boggins & Alan O’Connor faced the dilemma of having to postpone their wedding day that they had been so carefully planning & saving for since their engagement. “Please direct all questions & suggestions to me please as Sabrina is too emotional right now. I am the practical one in the family” Sabrina’s sister Shirley asked Ciara O’Callaghan, Wedding Coordinator at the Dromhall Hotel. “I only have one sister Marie and she is brilliant. I couldn’t get through to Alan on his mobile until his lunch break as he was working at the Speakeasy Bar when the news broke” Sabrina told me. “I usually have a cup of tea with my lunch but after hearing the news, I decided to go for a pint” Alan laughed. “We were only just finished the table plan the night before!! I honestly felt so robbed Marie but I soon realised every other bride in the entire world was feeling exactly the same way as we did including two of my cousins, Stephanie Egan (who was to marry Dáithí Casey 15.5.20) & Ciara Moynihan (who was to marry Troy Francis 17.7.2020). I have to say we were so lucky that we got to rebook all of our suppliers - Truly Diverse, Paudie Healy Photography, L&M Videography, Michelle Murphy & Mel Barry Hair Stylists exactly as they were. The only thing we changed was we are extending our new date, 11th March by two hours starting at St Mary’s Cathedral at 12 noon instead of 2pm” Sabrina told me. That’s the job, an extra two hours to enjoy! I thought to myself how robbed I had felt myself when the dates for our family holiday came and went. Small worries by comparison to Sabrina & Alan’s. A wedding and a honeymoon gone just like that. “A full morning of ‘bobby knocking’ covid style. Every time we opened the front door, we were

greeted with prosecco, flowers, cards from friends and family as they drove away waving when, what was to be, our wedding day, arrived. People are so good” Sabrina told me. “We really were overwhelmed. Afterwards, Alan & I went for a drive and I decided to take the prosecco for me & an orange juice for Alan. We toasted to our future wedding date at Ladies View in 22degree sunshine. Ladies View is where we went on our first date” Sabrina said. “And I was completely distracted up there. One of my Best Men, Ollie Barrett had removed me from the Stag WhatsApp group. It really bothered me. I couldn’t understand it at all. That evening I was added back to my own stag group, only to view lots of videos and photos of ‘cheers’ from all the boys toasting to our wedding day. Talk about redeeming yourself with a bang. It was great!” Alan laughed.

“We’ve had so much time together during lockdown Marie, time we would never have had before. We tackled the task of mending personalised accessories for our ‘new’ big day with the help of my gifted friend Aisling Crowley” Sabrina told me “With no golf, lockdown was the best pre marriage course that every was” Alan laughed, so did I! “We’re going ahead with our big day for next March whether it’s with our original 316 guests or just the pair of us and I can’t wait! See you next week, Edele & Team at BWell Fitness. Bring it on!” Sabrina joked. So the countdowns well and truly on

again for these two. Roll on 11th March 2021 at the Dromhall Hotel. I thanked them both for their time and wished them the very best of luck with everything going forward. I smiled to myself as I left wondering, how difficult will be for Alan to remember to celebrate his wedding anniversary now that there are officially two!!

B ishop Ray Browne wishes to announce the following changes to the appointments

Priests of all Pastoral Areas of the Diocese take up different responsibilities outside their own parishes and within the Pastoral Area. This will be decided and communicated locally. These changes will become effective on Wednesday, August 5th 2020.

Bishop Ray Browne spoke on the changes:It is now four months since the corona virus began to dominate our lives. Thank God for the way we as a country have responded. Thank God for all front-line workers. Thank God for the ‘care for one another’ evident in all our communities. As we complete the phases of returning to ordinary living, my prayer is that, collectively and individually we will adjust our contact with each other in accordance with all public health guidance, in order to keep the virus suppressed throughout our communities.

New appointments in 2020My hope was to have very few new appointments this summer. This became even more a priority in the light of the corona virus. Amid the corona virus the welcomes and farewells are difficult for the priests and their communities. Sadly, in recent months two of our priests died, Fr Liam Comer and Fr Michael Fleming. Both were faith-filled, capable priests and much loved by their communities. Sincere sympathy to their families and to their parish communities. May they Rest in Peace. Fr. Tom Looney is also retiring this year. We thank him and wish him well. Taking all this into account thank God the number of appointments this year is quite

small. Our priests demonstrate a great spirit of willingness to accept new appointments, in the interest of best serving all the fifty-three parishes in the diocese. Fr Amos and Fr Vitalis came to our diocese from Kitale diocese in Kenya just a year ago. What courage they showed in taking on such an enormous change of world and culture! Their only prior knowledge of Ireland was through their bishop being a Cork man, and through knowing several Irish missionary sisters and priests. People have remarked that it is wonderful to have two priests so young, joyful, and content. They give great witness to faith in Jesus Christ and to the vocation of being a priest. Their joy in Christ challenges us all. I recently read a statement regarding how the Church in Africa and Ireland/Europe differs: “In Africa the priest helps the people, in the west the people help the priest”. May their presence among us help the development of lay ministry. We thank them for their inspiring presence and for coming to the diocese of Kerry.

Facing the future with Hope Over the next five years we will have priests retiring each year. The corona virus and the requirement that all people over seventy and all others with serious underlying medical conditions should shield/cocoon gave us a vivid reminder of the age profile of our priests. We are blessed that priests continue to minister up to the age of seventy-five. Thank God for their years of dedicated, faithful ministry. Thank God for our two seminarians preparing to serve as priests in the diocese. Please continue to pray for them and for more vocations to the diocesan priesthood and the diaconate.

A listening process commenced in the diocese, as part of a pastoral planning process, earlier this year. The listening happens at parish, pastoral area and diocese level. Questions include: What is our mission as the people of God? What are the challenges we face in the years ahead? What are our priorities? What next steps do we take to further develop lay ministry? Two challenging statements come to mind: In an era of fewer and fewer priests, our great task is to continue to have the fullness of parish life in each parish. We have within our parish communities all the gifts, talents and faith we need for the whole diocese to continue to thrive and we can make this happen. The years ahead will mean much more lay ministry. Lay ministry is people of faith living out their baptism calling to share their faith with others, by both word and example. Clergy will work side by side with the laity. We are one and all co-responsible for the life of the whole People of God, the Church. May God give courage, strength, and guidance to all the parish communities in our diocese. Please continue to be mindful of the needs of all your neighbours as we continue to live with the virus. God’s will be done. Our Lady health of the sick, pray for us.

“Working in the front line during this Pandemic brings its own challenges”.... Marie Meets the aMbulance crew

I made a few different attempts to ‘Gogglevox’ with our local Ambulance service recently but each time duty called and we had to reschedule. They are very busy people. Today I was in luck and arrived at the ‘change of guard’. Hannah & Bláithín finished their 8am to 8pm shift and Kay and Tom about to start their 8pm to 8am shift. They had an early ‘passover’ to accommodate me so I had a mere 5 minutes with Kay Dennehy who has served 26 years with the Ambulance service. “I won’t keep you Kay”. I knew the radio could go off at any second to send them out on their first call of the night so I cut to the chase “So Kay what has it been like working in a high risk position during a pandemic”? I asked.“Working in the front line during this Pandemic brings its own challenges. We are always ready to respond to calls and health and safety is a priority. PPE equipment is worn and the Ambulance is washed and sanitized after each call. We average 4 or 5 calls per shift. There was a slight decline in call outs at the beginning of the Pandemic but we have seen the numbers increase over past week or so” Kay told me.Kay Dennehy began her career as a nurse before joining the Ambulance service. I ask Kay what made her choose her profession? “No two days are the same working in the Ambulance service Marie, 12 hour shifts could turn into 14 or even 16 hour shifts that’s the nature of the job.Every call is different and every call is a challenge. It’s personally rewarding to know that you have made a difference in someone’s life when they needed it the most. We are trained to work on our own initiative taking everything into account and acting fast as a

team. There are 7 Ambulances working out of 6 locations in Kerry but we could be sent anywhere tonight. Roll on 8am” Kay laughed.“So many who have crossed our paths have followed up with words of thanks which is always nice, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Killarney Ambulance staff to thank the Killarney businesses and Voluntary organisations who donated goodies to us during the Pandemic” Kay said.I could hear Tom on the radio booking himself and Kay on to their 8pm shift and I also knew the last thing Hannah and Bláithín wanted to do was smile down the lens at me after a 12 hour

shift. I really believe that our front line workers are amazing on a normal day, not to mind amidst a Pandemic. The Ambulance had to be checked before Kay and Tom began their shift so while our chat was short and sweet I was delighted to have caught up with another of our community workers on the frontline…….everyday !!!Thank you Kay and Tom and thank you Hannah and Bláithín for obliging me after a long day.

in spite of lockdown restrictions to support people in need. The lockdown resulted in almost all of their fundraising being either postponed or lost and Celebrate4 Life aims to assist with recouping some of that funding. This was true of all charities not alone the four that we are partnering with for Celebrate4Life. We feel that almost everyone will identify with them at some period in our lives”, Melanie O’Sullivan said.

Staff at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre opened their doors to the public this week on a phased basis. The return of services commenced with the re-opening of the gym on Wednesday, 22nd July and the re-opening of the swimming pool from Tuesday 28th July. All other activities and services will be introduced later and on a phased basis in line with Government and public health advice.Killarney Sports & Leisure Campus Ltd, Kerry County Council and Coral Leisure have been working over the past number of weeks to prepare for a safe return for staff, customers, members and clubs to the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre. The main priority had been, and remains, the health and safety of all users of the facility and this has required changes in the way services are provided. In line with that public health advice, centre management will be limiting the numbers of patrons that can access the facility at any one time. Changes have been introduced to ensure physical distancing is maintained and all users are being asked to follow and observe these measures.

Coral Leisure, which manages the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre, will provide all customers, members, users and clubs with further information on how to access and use the centre and the various services over the coming days.Coral Leisure and Kerry County Council look

The 1,800 residents of Milltown are delighted with the news that one of them could be Ireland’s latest Eu-roMillions Plus top prize winner of €500,000 following last Friday night’s EuroMillions draw. The winning re-tailer which was Kelly’s Londis store in the town has also proved that lightning can strike twice as it previ-ously sold a €1 million Daily Million top prize to one of its lucky custom-ers last February.

Seamus Kelly who owns the lucky Londis store said: “I was on my way to play a round of golf this morning when the call came through from the National Lottery. The news that we had sold yet another winner abso-lutely blew my socks off – I can’t even begin to imagine how the actual win-ner is feeling this morning! I’m just absolutely speechless, honestly I am. When we sold the €1 million Daily Million prize last February, there was so much excitement in the town that it felt like we all won the lottery. This is a small close-knit community so to get two big National Lottery winners in the space of six months is magical for us all down here. It really is a once in a lifetime win so my advice to the winners is to savour this moment for the next few days before they make any major spending plans for their

new found fortune.”The winning EuroMillions Plus num-bers which are worth a half million euro to one lucky player were: 14, 26, 30, 42, 50.

This €500,000 EuroMillions Plus win is the latest National Lottery top prize to be won in the Kingdom in 2020 with six lucky winners sharing over €12.7 million in top prizes. Amazingly, these six top prize wins were shared by just three lucky retailers in Glen-beigh, Milltown and Killarney.

They are:€9.7 winner of the Lotto jackpot sold at Daly’s Supervalu, Killarney on 18th April.€1 million Daily Million top prize win at Kelly’s Londis in Milltown on 4th February.€500,000 EuroMillions Plus win at Sheahan’s Centra store in Glenbeigh on 28th February.€500,000 EuroMillions Plus win at Sheahan’s Centra store in Glenbeigh on 31st March.€500,000 EuroMillions Plus win at Daly’s SuperValu in Killarney on 14th April.€500,000 EuroMillions Plus win at Kelly’s Londis on 17th July 2020.

Lotto win as Milltown strikes again!

Seamus Kelly celebrates at the Londis store in Milltown, Co. Kerry celebrate last February when they sold the €1 million Daily Million top prize. The store sold a €500,000 winning ticket in the EuroMillions Plus draw last Friday.

In her column with the Killarney Outlook - Marie takes to the highways and byways meeting locals and telling their story

“My mother was thrilled

I met a Kerryman”, Marie meets the lovely Paula and Domhnall

This week I visited the beautiful home of Domhnall & Paula Kavanagh on St Anne’s Road. I thought I was clutching at straws but as their youngest daughter, Gemma Kavanagh (Kerry Rose 2013), twisted their arms on my behalf. Thanks Gemma!! Two great people in the hub of our community always. Dr Kavanagh for his professional service to the community for over four decades & for his dedication to Kerry Football. And Paula, for her endless charity work with the Children of Chernobyl and her consistent sense of elegance & style. Always a pleasure to photograph with her daughters Gemma & Orla at the Killarney Races, Fashion Shows and other local events.I was delighted to get a tour of what was the old Torc Medial Practice which Dr Domhnall Kavanagh has now converted to a beautiful apartment to use for family visitors. A fantastic conversion but for me, so strange to be in there without phones ringing and no Gemma or no Maura asking me to take a seat in the waiting room, which is now a well appointed bedroom. “Domhnall has been busy going back to his student days as a painter with John A Woods during lockdown Marie” Paula told me. “He’s also a dab hand in the kitchen I’m delighted to say. If I ever go away, which I did when the children were little, to visit my family in Hollyford, Co. Tipp, I never had to worry as Domhnall is great at cooking the Sunday Roast”. So outside of painting, cooking and interior design what else has Dr Domhnall Kavanagh been up to “I love to cycle so I’ve been delighted to do that on less busier roads and through the National Park. Paula & I have enjoyed many walks together which we might not have found the time to do outside of the Covid19 restrictions” Domhnall told me. “I’ve been keeping a Covid19 diary Marie” Paula told me. “Each day I enter the factual information i.e. the new cases, deaths & news in general but I also record the simple everyday things like how I missed my all of my 6 grandchildren (soon to be 7 as Orla is due in November) but my garden is reaping the benefits of my time”. I can vouch for that, it’s beautiful. “We enjoyed lockdown Marie as life had always been hectic so we had a chance to relax, evaluate & reflex”. Being a Tipperary Kerry combo couple, I was interested to hear how this pair met. “We met at UCC in 1973 and my Mum was thrilled I had met a Kerryman as she came from Cahirsiveen and married my Dad from Tipperary. We will be 40 years married in August and while we

did have plans to go to Malta, we’ve opted for a family celebration at Killeen House Hotel instead”. Here’s the part I didn’t know, Paula Kavanagh is a school teacher, both primary & secondary. She finished teaching when she got married to Domhnall as he was busy working as a GP. “I did a little of substitute teaching at St Oliver’s down through the years but my priority was my own three at home - Orlaith, Éanna & Gemma”. “So what do you think Paula, will the schools reopen in Sept”? I asked. “It’s hard to tell Marie. I would be very hopeful but I will say I’d rather the pubs to stay closed in the hope that the schools will reopen as before”. I really hope Paula is right for the sake of all the homeschooling parents and the homeschooled kids!!!Dr Domhnall Kavanagh comes from a long line of fine footballers. IN 1903 Jack Myers, Domhnall’s Grandfather, was part of the team that won Kerry’s first All Ireland. His son Billy Myers won 4 All Ireland Medals. “My father Dan Kavanagh played football for both Galway & Kerry. He was a student at UCG during the war times so transport was limited. He played centre forward the first time the All Ireland was played outside of Ireland at the Polo Grounds in 1946. Sadly they lost to Cavan but beat Roscommon in the All Ireland Final the following year in 1947”. Dr Domhnall Kavanagh payed with the U21 Kerry team & Kerry Seniors for 3 years, playing centre forward in the 1972 All Ireland final against Offaly. In 1974 he hung up his boots having qualified as a GP and began working with Dr Fuller on St Anne’s Road. A

sporting family, Dr Domhnall Kavanagh’s son Éanna, played U21 & Kerry Minors for two years and his daughter Orla represented the Republic of Ireland on the Schools International Basketball team for many years. “We were so lucky to have everyone together for Domhnall’s 70th Birthday back in February. It was a great weekend at The Skellig Hotel in Dingle, just us, our children, their other halves and our grandchildren” Paula told me.

It was a great pleasure to be on the premises of the former Torc Medical Centre but without an ailments to be examined. Thank you for having me at your beautiful home on St Anne’s Road Domhnall & Paula Kavanagh.

Early in May, we reported that the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society had digitised all of its publications (Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society and The Kerry Magazine) and was making them available on their new website www.kerryhistory.ie. At that time, we also reported that the Society suspended all of its activities, due to the Pandemic. Former society president Marie O’Sullivan has been in touch with the good news, that as of Tuesday, July 28, 2020, the Society’s programme of events will be up and running again, albeit through a very different medium. Due to the Covid 19 restrictions, it will not be possible for the Society to convene lectures/talks at venues throughout the County, as has been the norm since 1967, when the Society was first founded. Under, the watchful eye of Currow native Robert McGuire (archaeologist turned primary teacher), the Society is pleased to announce that it will be hosting a series of webinars for its members over the coming months. Interested, Society members, will be emailed a Zoom link in advance of each webinar, which will allow them to participate in the event. If members are not available on the night, the Webinars will subsequently be available for viewing, through the Members’ Area of the Society website. Marie is stressing that members will not be able

to avail of either the Webinars or to access the Members’ Area if the Society is not in possession of a valid email address for each member. Therefore, she is appealing to every member to please email their details to info@

kerryhistory.ie, so that the Members’ Database can be updated. Thereby, ensuring that as many members as possible can access the Webinars/Members’ Area of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society website (www.kerryhistory.ie ).

As previously stated, the Webinar series will kick off on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 at 7.30pm, with a talk by Robert McGuire, which will focus on Castleisland Castle. Robert is a founder of the voluntary group 'The Castle of the Island Society'. This Society will release a documentary on the history of Castleisland Castle, later in 2020, www.castleislandcastle.com. The Castle, its history and structure has long been a passion of Robert’s and his lecture will focus upon his recent research into creating an accurate interpretation of the physical remains of this Desmond Castle. Detailed plans and elevations of the buildings within the Castle complex will be presented on the night. Additionally, the role of the Manor of the Island will be examined. This is a first not only for the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, but for Robert himself as it is the first time that he will speak in depth about his recent research and resulting conclusions on the physical layout of the “Castle of the Island”.

The second webinar of the series will be broadcast on August 18, 2020 at 7.30pm. This time Bryan MacMahon will speak on ‘The Cantillon’s of North Kerry and their French Connection’.The speaker Bryan Mac Mahon is a retired teacher, who is a widely published local historian.

The talk will cover the history and folklore associated with the Norman family, who achieved great prominence in North Kerry from the 13th century onwards. It is a story of soldiers and speculators, bards and bankers, saints and scribes. The talk will centre on three prominent individuals, including Ballyheigue-born Richard Cantillon who achieved fame as a millionaire in France in the early-1700s. He made his fortune as a banker and speculator, and wrote a seminal book on economics. He has been called “the greatest economist of all” and the Irish Times has a column named in his honour. Another Cantillon of Kerry descent was a supporter of Napoleon who made a notorious assassination attempt on the Duke of Wellington in 1818. Finally, Thomas de Cantillon Church was a journalist and poet in Kerry in the 1860s who championed the rights of tenants and denounced landlordism. Then on September 24, Dr Michael Connolly, County Archaeologist will speak on Kerry’s earliest structures, ‘The Portal Tombs at Killocloghane’. Full details of these and further webinars will be available in due course on www.kerryhistory.ie

In her column with the Killarney Outlook - Marie takes to the highways and byways meeting locals and telling their story

the biggest Move of My life.... but it just felt rightI had worked with David at the Aghadoe Heights, as PA to the General Managers Pat & Marie Chawke, for 7 years out of David’s 18 year service as assistant Manager at Aghadoe. I decided to make a visit to the newly reopened Cahernane House Hotel resulting from their appearance on Virgin Media as part of their campaign ‘Backing Business’.  Just before our hotels closed their doors in March, David was appointed Food & Beverage Manager at the stunning Cahernane House Hotel. I fancied a little treat in the sunshine so opted for the St Tola Goat’s Cheese Flat Bread and my small lady had her usual toasted cheese sandwich while I chatted to David.  He was excited and delighted about his new position at the Cahernane but I had to ask him about the Virgin Media campaign first.  “We are part of the PREM Hotel Group owned by Jim Murphy and our PR Company, O’Brien PR, gave us the opportunity. It was mainly down to Aileen at O’Brien PR that we were featured on Virgin Media’s ‘Backing Business’” David explained.  “It’s great, we are so happy with the business it has brought to the hotel”. Right, down to business “So David, what made you decide to ‘move on’ after 18 years of service at Aghadoe” I asked.  ‘’Let me start by saying it was an incredibly difficult decision” David said. When I worked there myself, although not a family run hotel, it felt like it, with so many long serving staff members. David continued “I learned so much from management and staff who were there most of there working lives, it had a special aura around it and was a privilege to be a part of’’. David was somewhat responsible for steering that ship so well and I’m sure anyone who worked under him would agree.  “I hadn’t known Emer Corridon, GM at the Cahernane very well but we got on like a house on fire in preparing for my last major function at the Aghadoe Heights, the IHF Ball” David told me.  Wow, what an elite event. Talk about going out with a bang.  “This was definitely the big finale, I was thankful to have built up so many great friends and colleagues over the years that after a few

phone calls I had assembled a fantastic team to join our own existing team and we catered for over 200 hoteliers that evening.  After many meetings with Emer we pulled off a great night for the hoteliers of Kerry and afterwards we remained good  friends. A position then arose at Cahernane house and one thing led to another, what started as a chat and a cup of tea resulted in one of the biggest moves of my life without even realising it.  It just felt right Marie so here I am”.  David seemed very happy with his decision so I figured he could take my next question about his recently postponed wedding.  “Juliette & I were devastated of course we were but we’ve rescheduled and managed to carry all our initial wedding providers to our new date, April 17th at the Muckross Park

Hotel.  We are on the countdown yet again Marie” David said.  “So did you do anything special for your initial wedding date David”?? I asked.  “As F&B Manager at a newly reopened hotel, I was working, but Emer had organised for Juliette to come to the hotel after I finished work and had a special area reserved for us to dine which was a such a lovely touch” David replied. ‘We had a fantastic meal cooked for us by award winning 2 rosette chef Eric Kavanagh, the new team couldn’t have done enough to make it a special occasion. Having worked with Emer at the GSH myself I knew David had landed on his feet.  She’s a gem and so is the Cahernane House.  “It’s a very personalised service here at the Cahernane Marie.  You could find me answering the phones or helping guests with their days activities. I remember one of my first days I brought guests to their room explaining the different areas along the way. A midst conversation I opened the bedroom door and found myself saying WOW aloud and the guests laughing behind me, I had to explain that I was new to the team and still discovering different rooms. It really was WOW Marie looking out at the mountains and national park in a newly appointed manor house room with all the modern features but kept in an old world style!” Enough said, I wanted to see this Wow room so David showed me four of them.  He was right, all rooms so beautifully

and uniquely appointed.  “We all work together as a closely knit team.  With 49 bedrooms existing, each with its own unique style, we will soon have an additional 12 rooms and a new brasserie to attract local clients”.  Nice!!  A very easy product to sell at Cahernane House Hotel so I’m sure David will be very happy there.  With a full belly, I thanked David & Emer for their time and off I went to the next Gogglvox location.

At the July 2020 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Gleeson asked that clarification would be sought from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on the urgently needed surface dressing of the N.22 from Clonkeen to Killarney.

The Council replied that TII appointed consultants have identified the section of the roadway from Lissivigeen Roundabout to the Park Road Roundabout, Killarney for improvement and that a Report will be prepared in the third quarter of this year with a view to securing funding for the work.

It is hoped the work will be undertaken in 2021.

Councillor Gleeson welcomed the reply but stated that the entire length of road as far as Clonkeen needs resurfacing. He committed to continue to seek the necessary funding for this vitally important access road into Kerry.

CLLR. CALLS FOR ADVANCE NOTICEKerry County Council should get advance notice from the relevant Government Department, of any applications for a licence to provide accommodation to Asylum Seekers in the county, according to a local Fianna Fáil Councillor. “In view of the lack of medical facilities, transport, employment, water and sewage, etc, in many rural towns and villages in our county, Kerry County Council, as the Planning Authority should have a major input into identifying, on behalf of the Department, any infrastructure that would require to be put in place in advance, to facilitate the addition of a sizeable number of new citizens to that location” said Councillor Michael Cahill. “We must learn from the botched efforts of the Department of Justice and Equality in setting up a Direct Provision Centre at The Skellig Star Hotel in Cahersiveen at the height of

the present pandemic” stated the Rossbeigh based Councillor. “I welcome the fact that the new Government intends to end Direct Provision as a failed concept, but we must now ensure that it is not replaced with another deeply flawed and inequitable system”

said the Fianna Fáil Councillor. “I moved an Emergency Motion at Monday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council and I strongly believe that we can lead the way in solving this nationwide problem” he said. “There are genuine concerns being raised in places like Sneem, Castlecove and Cahersiveen, to name but a few” he added. “And solutions need to be put in place now”Councillor Cahill said the advice of the HSE should also be sought and strictly adhered to in advance of any future contracts being signed. The Motion was seconded by Councillor Dan McCarthy.

Ballydribeen Residents Association in conjunction with Killarney Gardai held a bike safety evening for local children on Friday evening last.Community Garda Brendan O’Donavan with help from a number of colleagues gave a talk on bike safety, checking helmets brakes etc and gave a display of hand signals. Each child received a hi- vis vest at the end of the event and all learned about cycling safely. Here are some tip on Cycling safety for childrenIt is important to teach children to be safe on the road from a very early age.Always accompany children on or near roads.Children under 12 should not cross the road alone.Cycling is a healthy and active exercise.Your child can learn good motor skills from using a bike. It can also be an enjoyable activity. You should encourage your child to cycle.

Safety is the most important thing to teach your child when they learn to ride a bike.To reduce the risks to your child when cycling:they should always wear a helmet that fitsthey should wear reflective or high-vis clothingthe bicycle’s brakes, lights, reflectors, tyres and bell should be workingthe bicycle should be the right size for themthey should not wear clothes that might get

caught in the wheels or chainMake sure your child knows how to cycle properly. They should be aware of the workings of the bike, such as the brakes and the chain.Children under 12 years should not cycle on their own in or near traffic. It is too dangerous. If you plan to cycle on a public road with children, make sure that they have the skills and confidence to be safe. Teach them the importance of not taking any unnecessary risks.

GROuP TACKlE RubbISH at Killarney National ParkWhile walking in the beautiful Killarney National Park and noticing a lot of litter ,a group of people have come together to clean the shoreline on Ross Island.Diarmuid Griffin of Extinction Rebellion told the Killarney that while taking part in a recent Forest Bathing Workshop, organised by my friend Kerry Walker, we came across lots of litter had amassed along the lake shore of Ross Island. “ I was surprised as this area is usually litter free”, Diarmuid said.Concerned that such a beautiful area of our National Park had become tainted, we decided that we would organise a litter pick event. I brought it up at the next Extinction Rebellion Kerry meeting in Castlemaine. It seemed like a good practical event for our Environmental Activist group so I contacted the

relevant bodies. The event could not have taken place without the help of Yvonne Quill of Killarney Tidy Towns, Danny O’ Keefe of NPWS and staff of Kerry County Council.“Our meitheal met at Ross Castle last Friday at 2:30 pm and we spent a couple of hours walking the trails by the lake shore, with litter pickers and bags in hand. “It is always a pleasant walk, but the companionship and team work (at social distance) made it all the more enjoyable...also the satisfaction of returning the area back to it’s former state of glory” he added. We each had a full bag of rubbish by the end of the afternoon and it was promptly collected by NPWS staff”, Diarmuid said.

Organised by the Extinction Rebellion Kerry Group in collaboration with Killarney Tidy Towns, lockdown rubbish is tackled at the beautiful Coppermines walk on Ross Island by L-R Diarmaid Griffin (Extinction Rebellion Kerry), Darrach Ó’Murchú, Luke Eastwood, Lilian Zeask & Kerry Walker. This week, Killarney paid their last respects to Joanne Downey, a mother of six who

died on Sunday following a road traffic accident as she walked to work on Friday morning.Originally from Knocknagoshel, Joanne was known throughout Killarney for her involvement with Killarney Legion GAA club.In 2015, she received a Special Merit Award at the club’s annual social for her dedication to the club.In a statement this week, the club said “The club is devastated beyond words to hear of the very very sad passing of Joanne, our deepest thoughts, Sympathies and prayers go to Chris, Mark, Shane, Katrina, Ellie, Cassie and the Downey Family. RIP JoanneSpeaking at St. Mary Cathedral at her Requiem Mass, her eldest son Chris spoke to the congregation. He thanked Legion GAA Club for everything they did for them since her tragic passing and also said that her weekly visits to the club to cook meals for the senior team was one of the highlights of her week.“We take comfort that she is in good company still able to talk football with our comrades Niall McGillycuddy and Damien Lyne and all the other Legion stalwarts that have gone before us”.“Thank you o our neighbours in Ballydribeen and the wider Killarney community, Mom loved this town and the people in it.“The overwhelming support from friends and local businesses has given us so much strength over these past few days”, Chris said. Strong, selfless, caring, a maverick, full of life, full of love, full of hope, one of a kind, the toughest woman we will ever know, there aren’t enough words to describe your beautiful soul who gave us everything and wanted nothing in return, a warrior, so resiliant, no battle was too tough and boy you battled right down to your last breath.Rest easy mom, your job is done, you have raised six more warriors with an unbreakable bond who will carry a piece of you with them every day”, he said. Before she was laid to rest at Aghadoe Cemeterey, Joanne’s cortage drove to the grounds of her beloved Legion GAA club where

members clapped the cortage as Joanne’s favourite song “Bat Out of Hell” played.Joanne is survived by her children, Mark, Chris, Katriana, Ellie, Shane and Cassie, much loved Nana of Éabha and loving daughter of Joseph and the late Marie. KEELIN SHANLEy’S POSTHUMOUS MEMOIR

to be published

In the last few months before she passed away in February this year, Keelin Shanley

was writing a memoir, A Light That Never Goes Out.Commissioning Editor Deirdre Nolan said, ‘Keelin got in touch with me in December last year. She was nearing the end and strongly felt she wanted to leave a record of her life behind and we were honoured to help her do so. We put her together with writer Alison Walsh and she helped Keelin write a most extraordinary memoir. It is so rare to have such an insight into what someone who is facing death is thinking and feeling, and despite the gravity of the situation she was facing, through her writing Keelin has managed to capture the fleeting beauty of life in way that is awe-inspiring and ultimately uplifting.’In the introduction to the book, Keelin writes of her thoughts as she came to terms with her diagnosis of stage 4 breast cancer, aged just 51, ‘I realised that I am still Keelin Shanley: I still am that person, in spite of everything. In spite of the wig, the scarves, the IV lines, the tests, mum, wife, news presenter, daughter, sister, stepdaughter – I am all of those things.

And that’s why I decided to write this book: to remind me of who I am, and to leave those who love me something to hold on to.’Charting the twists and turns of both a remarkable career as an investigative journalist and a lengthy battle with cancer, A Light That Never Goes Out reveals with real honesty what it’s like to keep living life and having a career – right up to Keelin becoming a co-anchor of RTÉ’s Six One News – while dealing with the challenges of cancer treatment. The title of the book is a play on the song, ‘There is a Light That Never Goes Out’ by The Smiths. They were one of her favourite bands when she first met her husband Conor Ferguson. Conor, who completed the last chapter of the book after Keelin passed away, said, ‘Keelin lived such an extraordinary life, she has left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Keelin wasn’t prone to nostalgia, she was upfront and a “doer” from the very beginning. She always grabbed life by the reins and, as a result, didn’t have many regrets. Though we miss her every day and remember her in every moment, we hope that

her remarkable story will inspire people to live life to the full and put the best foot forward, no matter what obstacles life presents’.

Keelin, has strong Killarney connections through her aunt Betty Crosbie and cousins Karie, Noelle and Aisling.

The decision to delay the Leaving Cert results until 7th September is tough on 61,000 young people

By Billy Ryle

The decision not to publish the Leaving Cert results until 7th September adds

the final insult to the many injuries already inflicted on 61,000 young people by the Dept. of Education. Leaving Cert students have been put through the mill emotionally and mentally since last March. They have suffered the distress of uncertainty and indecision. They have ploughed a lonely furrow in a bubble of virtual reality. They had no closure as they complete their second level education. They have endured more turmoil than any Leaving Cert Class that went before.

They are innocent victims of mind-boggling bureaucracy and staggering procrastination by the Dept. of Education. They have registered for calculated grades as they were required to do. Now they are informed that they must register on the calculated grade student portal at www.gov.ie between Monday, 20th July and 4pm on Monday, 27th July to confirm that they want to receive their results. Of course, they want their results. More than that, they want and are entitled to their results in mid-August. Prolonging their suffering for an extra three weeks is indefensible and unjustifiable.

The State Examinations Commission (SEC) has long since washed its hands of the calculated grades process and will have no role in the issuing of results. A ‘Special Unit’ in the Dept. of

Education was drafted in by the former Minister to do the job. It received total cooperation from the students, the teachers and the school authorities. The individual schools returned the marks and rankings to the Dept. of Education in good time. All the civil servants have to do is to standardise the markings to conform with previous years’ results. It’s not a task which has to be done manually. They haven’t a single examination script to check. All the raw data is at their disposal. The Dept. of Education has state of the art information technology to do the number crunching.

The former Minister was confident that the Leaving Certificate results would be issued as close as possible to the standard date, around 15th August. That must still happen. The new Minister needs to lay out her stall by calling in the ‘Special Unit’ and metaphorically banging heads together. The members of the ‘Special Unit’ are there to wear the green jersey on behalf of the young people who are anxiously awaiting results. They are some of the best paid officials in the entire Public Service. Annual leave for those involved in preparing the results for publication must be deferred to a later stage. Overtime and six-day week working must be the order of the day. Extra bodies must be assigned to this process so that the results are issued promptly. With a bit of urgency and goodwill on the part of the ‘Special Unit’ and a bit of arm twisting by the Minister the results

can still be issued in mid-August.

By delaying the results to 7th September, many students will suffer considerable financial hardship, not being in a position to draw down a SUSI college grant until well into the academic year. Finding accommodation will be a major issue for students. The CAO offers will run very late, especially for students awaiting the later rounds of offers. Remember that the calculated grade cannot be appealed this year, only the paper trail which led to the grade awarded. Unless students get there results on schedule, they could easily find themselves out in the cold in terms of alternative courses or training options if unsuccessful in the CAO system.

The onus is now on the Minister to insist on having the results published in mid-August. sAfe To school - An Ideas Document for Safe Access to School In response to the HSE ‘Interim Recommendations’ for the reopening of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic, issued on July 1st, 2020, Green-Schools Travel have developed ‘Safe to School - An Ideas Document for Safe Access to Schools’ for schools to consider implementing in order to allow for recommended physical distancing on arrival to school and to address front of school vehicle congestion. Measures presented range from creative, temporary initiatives that schools can implement themselves, through to measures to permanently upgrade active travel infrastructure, which will require Local Authority involvement.

In preparation for the planned return of schools in September, Green-Schools conducted

research in May and June 2020 to establish the level of concern about enabling safe access to schools. Of the initiative, Green-Schools Travel Manager Jane Hackett, said:

“‘We are eager to see students and teachers return to school in September, however we recognise the problems facing schools when it comes to social distancing at the school gate. We have put this document together to support school Principals, Boards of Managements and Local Authorities to put in place interventions which can support walking, cycling and reduce congestion at the school gate. At a time of immense pressure facing schools we hope that this document can go some way in supporting schools and offer them tangible solutions to new problems which have arisen due to

Covid-19. Green-Schools has been working with schools nationwide since 2008 to reduce congestion at the school gate and we hope that our experience can help schools during this unprecedented time.”

FESTIvALS AND PUbLIC EvENTS IN KERRy REMAINED CANCELLED

With the dates imminent for the annual events like Puck Fair and the Kenmare Fair Day An Garda Síochána, the Health Services Executive and Kerry County Council are reminding members of the public that a large number of festivals, fairs and public events over the coming weeks in Kerry have been cancelled or postponed because of current advice and restrictions in relation to the coronavirus, COVID-19. The three organisations, which are part of the Cork-Kerry Interagency Emergency Management Group, have come together to remind everyone, in particular, that neither Puck Fair in Killorglin nor the traditional annual Fair Day in Kenmare on 15 August are taking place this year because of the global pandemic and the threat posed to public health by the potential congregation of large numbers of people as well as likely difficulties in relation to observing social distancing. The Gardaí, the HSE and the Council have appealed to people not to gather informally

or congregate at either of these locations on the traditional fair dates and to desist from travelling to Killorglin or Kenmare in the expectation of any informal, parallel or ‘unofficial’ gatherings. They have emphasised however that the usual dates for Puck Fair and the Fair Day in Kenmare will be normal business days in Killorglin and Kenmare respectively and members of the public should continue to go about their business on these dates in a safe way.Garda Superintendent Flor Murphy said: ‘Puck Fair in Killorglin and Fair Day in Kenmare are great social events, but unfortunately these social occasions pose a risk to public health at the moment. I am appealing to people to act responsibly and to comply with the public health advice. We will be implementing additional policing measures at both locations to ensure public health guidelines are complied with.’Community Work Manager with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare at the HSE, Hilary

Scanlan, said: ‘Our communities have worked very hard to flatten the curve of Covid-19 and to keep everyone safe. It’s important that we all continue to “Hold Firm” and remember the government guidelines on gatherings and physical distancing.’ The Mayor of County Kerry, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen thanked the organisers of these events for showing leadership in cancelling the festivals which are traditionally such an important part of the summer in the county. ‘COVID-19 is still with us and personal behaviour is paramount in continuing to flatten the curve and it is essential that we do not have any attempts to have parallel or private gatherings in contravention of the guidelines. We all hope that the many summer festivals in the county will be in position to resume their tremendous work and bring enjoyment to visitors once again in 2021.’

with Clodagh Nagle

The British government slowly introduced the Black and Tans into Ireland from 25 March 1920 onwards while the

Auxiliaries were introduced as a paramilitary unit of the RIC in July 1920. The Auxiliaries consisted of British soldiers who served in the Great War and the Black and Tans comprised of British ex-soldiers and ex-prisoners who were mainly ill trained. The British government believed both groups would be a source of help for the RIC.

As a result of this, the British presence was strong in East Kerry and the RIC/Black and Tans were dominant

figures in this threshold. For example, they had possession of the RIC Barracks in Rathmore until the Truce in July 1921 despite the IRA’s many unsuccessful attempts at attacking the building. The British Army often patrolled the different towns/villages at night, houses were looted/burned down, and the Black and Tans/Auxiliaries often completed random raids in different houses.

For example, one evening the Auxiliaries were travelling through Gneeveguilla village when they stopped at a

random house to complete a raid. Once they arrived into this house, they noticed a picture which unsettled them. It was a picture of the Rathmore Volunteers in 1914 and as a result of this, they assumed the man of the house was involved with the IRA. They brought him to the Tralee Barracks, and he was imprisoned there, despite the fact he had not been convicted of a crime prior to the raid.

Another example of their presence was the British forces attempt at discontinuing Sinn Fein’s magazine

An Phoblacht as they tried to silence the magazine and to prevent the magazines views from spreading across the country. The British forces damaged the building’s windows and arrested the workers. The British forces released many proclamations which outlined the penalties citizens would receive for associating with An Phoblacht. An Phoblacht continued their publications underground.

The Kerry No. 2 Brigade continued to practise their Guerrilla Warfare as they fought against their British Counterparts,

and they were largely successful with the ambushes they performed. The Kerry No. Brigade played a significant role in their locality which also helped the fight nationally.

A Return to On-Field Action! It is wonderful to see our hurling and football teams back in action. The Football playing Sea-son began with a round of the Keane’s Super-Valu Minor Leagues last Friday. All results and upcoming fixtures are on the Kerry GAA web-site. The first game in the Kerry Petroleum Club Championship was played last Sunday where Cromane overcame Ballylongford in the Junior Preliminary game. Next weekend sees a host of Kerry Petroleum Club Championship games being played all over the County. Full fixtures can be found on the Kerry GAA Website.

Spectator Safety -Spectators should be aware that all the risks posed from Covid-19 cannot be eliminated but that essential control measures have been put in place to reduce risks for members. Spec-tators must not attend games if they display any symptoms of Covid-19 and instead should phone their GP and follow public health ad-vice. Individuals that are considered high risk or are in close contact with others who are considered high risk should not attend games. Individuals must be informed that much of the responsibility for managing Covid-19 risk remains with themselves particularly in rela-tion to social distancing, wearing of face cov-erings and sanitation. All spectators should be encouraged to bring their own hand sanitiser. The use of face coverings is strongly advised for all patrons over the age of 13. Spectators must not enter the field of play at any time includ-ing pre-match, at half-time and other intervals and after the final whistle or at end-of-match presentations. Spectators should be advised to keep their own record of contacts at a match for potential tracing purposes. All spectators should be encouraged to download the HSE tracing app.Tickets - The most common question asked over the last week is how does someone get a ticket to see the Kerry Petroleum Club Championship games? Kerry GAA has partnered with Future Ticketing to establish an e-ticketing system. All tickets will be pre-purchased with maximum attendances set in accordance with govern-ment guidelines. The e-ticketing system also removes the need for volunteers to handle cash at the gates. The Government has deferred the intended increase in numbers allowed to at-tend games. It will remain at 200 people until at least August 10th. With this restriction in place, we will not have tickets on public sale but we will have once the limit increases to 500. For the opening games, the Club Secretary or nomi-nated Club person will have 40 tickets to sell for each game through our e-ticketing system. Once we are allowed to increase to 500, GAA supporters will be encouraged to go on the Kerry GAA website and purchase a ticket using a credit or debit card. The ticket will be emailed to the email address provided. On match day all tickets from either mobile phones or print outs will be scanned using hi-tech laser mobile scanners at each venue, this ensures that full contact tracing information for all attendees will be available to statutory authorities if re-quired. All data is controlled by Kerry GAA and managed in accordance with GDPR regulations with data processing and storage supplied by

Future Ticketing & Amazon Web Services.

Pass Holders - Kerry GAA has over 1,300 pass holders between Croke Park Club Plus Season Ticket Holders, Cairde Chiarraí Fundraising Scheme, Austin Stack Park Development Scheme, Fitzgerald Stadium Development Scheme, County Board Season Tickets and County Board Pass Holders. The first action required of our Pass Holders is to register their details on our new ticketing system in order to access the code to purchase tickets for their chosen game. Kerry GAA aim to facilitate registration from next Wednesday July 23 onwards. All Pass Holders will need to register their name, address, email address, phone number plus details of their current Pass (i.e.name/number). (Please note initially there will only be a small number of tickets made available due to maximum capacity of 200 (in-cluding players/mentors/match officials/etc) being allowed. Also note membership of any of the above named schemes allows a mem-ber access to one pass for one game per round subject to availability. Registration begins Wednesday July 23 and the first tickets for Pass Holders will not be coming on stream until the following week (From Monday July 27) for Rd 2 Club Championship games. In order to track attendance and traceability all Pass Holders must have a ticket from the new ticket system to attend club fixtures this year and this ticket must be presented on entry for scanning. Note, a person’s current Pass is not valid to gain entry to games. Once registered on our new system, a Pass Holder has access to the section on the Kerry GAA where users can login based on their registration details provided and then claim their ticket. We cannot guarantee availability for the popular games as they will be on a first come first served basis. We wish all Clubs the very best of luck in the weeks ahead. We hope Spectators enjoy watch-ing the games albeit in strange circumstances. We urge everyone to follow public health ad-vice and follow the instructions of the Stewards. Suppression of the virus will result in more and more people being allowed to attend games and support their team in person.

Kelloggs GAA Cúl Camps The Kellogg’s GAA Cúl Camps began last Mon-

Hyaluronic Acid delivers an immediate, “Insta-filter” to fill in fine lines without an injection.

THE DRINK YOUR SKIN NEEDSHyaluronic Acid draws moisture into the skin and stops it from escaping into the environment.

IT CAN HOLD UP TO 1000 TIMES ITS WEIGHT IN WATEREach molecule of Hyaluronic Acid has the ability to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Allowing it to get the moisture into the skin and keep it there. This results in major plumping and hydration giving you a dewy, glowing skin.

DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE WORD 'ACID'Although the name states ‘acid’, hyaluronic does not strip or resurface the skin or leave your skin needing any down time. Hyaluronic acid can be used every morning and night for best results and it can be paired with most other ingredients.

IT IS NATURALLY FOUND IN OUR SKIN, BUT IS DEPLETINGLike collagen and elastin, the amount of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid decreases as we get older. Environmental aggressors also deplete our moisture levels, meaning that our skin can be prone to looking dehydrated, uneven, and dull without it.

IT WORKS WONDERS FOR EVERY TYPE OF SKINAs it is not your typical acid, hyaluronic acid is suitable for all skin types. Its lightweight gel-like texture is appealing to sensitive skins and skin that is prone to breakouts.

HYDRATION = HEALINGIf you suffer from breakouts and scars, they will disappear a lot quicker when hyaluronic acid is in your routine.

Trying To lose weighT? noT seeing progress?

Training going well but not seeing results on the scales? Starting to doubt your training programme or even your trainer? First thing to do is to stop becoming fixated on the scales. It is the one thing that we all do when trying to lose weight is that we get on the scales every time we pass it and then become disillusioned when it doesn’t show us what we are hoping to see. There are other ways to measure progress.Of course, the other thing that we all as individuals have to do is to be honest about our diets. It is easy to say “oh my diet is pretty good” when the reality can be that it is very good for part of the week and then everything goes out the window at the weekend. Sound familiar? The bottom line is that you can train every day, but if your diet is not what it should be then how do you expect to see progress on the scales. Can you honestly look at your food diary for the last week and say that you have included everything for your trainer to review or are you hiding things? If you are one of those hiding or not recording everything then it will be impossible to reach your goals, and remember they are your goals, not your trainers. Your trainer is there to help you, trust them to do their job, but for them to do so you have to start with being completely honest with them. Work with your trainer, be disciplined with your training and nutrition and you will lose the weight you are looking to lose, you will see progress and you will get the results you want.Be safe, B Well!

We at B Well Fitness Club are offering help and support in these difficult times so please tune into us on FACEBOOK, INSTAGRAM & our NEW You Tube channel. Also feel free to reach out to us on the phone 087-7643449 by text or email [email protected]

One of the most positive things that has emerged from this time of “lockdown” is that many people have been re-evaluating what really matters in their lives. We have had more time to think, to slow down and connect with what is important. As we move into the days ahead it is vital that we take this learning and awareness and use it to create and shape our new future, both on an individual level and also globally. To do this we need to have a vision of what that future looks like and if we can be defined by this vision rather than the memories of the past.

Use this five-step plan to help you to begin

to design your future...

1. Create a vision of what your future looks like and feels like. Imagine it in your mind.2. Decide on the emotions you want to feel every day3. Mentally rehearse who you will be (how do you act, think, feel...what are you doing and how are you being?)4. Decide what behaviours or habits you have to change (for example getting more rest, eating healthy, changing what you think about)5. Every single day, take time to meditate or visualise this new you and act as if what you desire as already happened!

Five steps to creating a future you desire

LEAGUE After a long wait and with much anticipation and excitement the Dr.Crokes minor team got their County Minor football league campaign off to a winning start in Lewis road on Friday evening last. We played host to Kenmare and with a stiff wind to their backs got down to business straightaway and within minutes had secured a commanding lead with a succession of three well taken goals from forwards Cian McMahon, Padraic Looney and Tom Doyle. The first half saw great play from both sides coupled with some great individual skill and scores and as the whistle blew for half time Dr. Crokes had a well deserved lead of 3-9 to 0-2.The second half was played at a lively pace, however Kenmare never really threatened the Dr.Crokes goal line but scored some well executed points. In the final quarter the game was put beyond doubt when the Dr Crokes goalie Adam Carey ran the length of the field to score a well taken penalty. The game ended on a scoreline of Dr. Crokes 4-14 to Kenmare 0-9.This was a sporting and well fought contest with both sides giving their all, no doubt delighted to be back playing competitive football albeit under Covid 19 guidelines. TICKETINGKerry GAA has partnered with Future Ticketing to establish an e-ticketing system. All tickets will be pre-purchased with maximum attendances set in accordance with government guidelines. The e-ticketing system also removes the need for volunteers to handle cash at the gates. The Government has deferred the intended increase in numbers allowed to attend games. It will remain at 200 people until at least August 10th. With this restriction in place, we will not have tickets on public sale but we will have once the limit increases to 500. For the opening games, the Club Secretary or nominated Club person will have 40 tickets to sell for each game through our e-ticketing system. Further details on this system will be communicated directly to clubs today. Once we are allowed to increase to 500, GAA supporters will be encouraged to go on the Kerry GAA website and purchase a ticket using a credit or debit card. The ticket will be emailed to the email address provided. On match day all tickets from either mobile phones or print outs will be scanned using hi-tech laser mobile scanners at each venue, this ensures that full contact tracing information for all attendees will be available to statutory authorities if

required. All data is controlled by Kerry GAA and managed in accordance with GDPR regulations with data processing and storage supplied by Future Ticketing & Amazon Web Services. It is essential that we follow Health and Safety guidance at all times, therefore we must insist that people only attend the game if they have a ticket. Without a ticket, a person cannot be admitted into the grounds. These rules are in place to protect us all. Working together we will ensure the continued suppression of the Covid virus meaning in the near future more and more supporters will be permitted to attend games, something that we are all looking forward to! The concepts of streaming and e-ticketing are very new to many of us. We will be releasing short videos over the coming days on the Kerry GAA Twitter and Facebook pages to demonstrate the procedure in purchasing a live stream of a game or a ticket for a game. Please contact us with any queries!Wishing everyone the best in the upcoming competitions!

KERRY PItCH & PUtt CLUB NEWSThis weekend sees us resume competitive Pitch & Putt beyond club level with the staging of the County Strokeplay Championships in both Deerpark and Tralee. Our U16’s get going on Saturday morning at 9am while all the action on Sunday will be in Tralee in the various adult grades. The Junior Men will kick off the day at 8am in the morning following by the Intermediate Men at 11am. The Senior Men and the Ladies will commence at 2pm and we ask players to respect all public health guidelines in partaking on Sunday. All play will be over a straight 36 holes with no playoffs if there is a tie for one of the various titles and countback of cards being used to decide the various winners if needed. Please note outside of the changes that have had to be made because of Covid-19, the same rules of our sport still apply and we ask players to remember the dress code and avoid slow play on the day. The presentations for each grade will take place immediately following their completion and we regret we won’t be able to hold one prize giving for all winners this year. Elsewhere just a reminder that Tralee will have their 36 hole Scratch Cup event on the August Bank Holiday Monday (you may book a tee-time through the club itself ) while at the recent County Board Meeting it was agreed unfortunately not to run either the Inter-Club Matchplay or Bob Casey events this year due to the time lost in the calendar and also to allow clubs time for their own fixtures in what’s left

of 2020. The other event which will be run will be this year will be the County Matchplay Championships which will take place on the October Bank Holiday Weekend at Deerpark. Clubs have been asked to consider the possibility of different days of play over the weekend itself prior to full details being agreed at the next County Board Meeting in late September. The U16 Matchplay event will take place before the schools are due to reopen however. Details regarding that will be announced in due course. Entry forms for the National Strokeplay and Matchplay events are currently available as well. The adult National Strokeplay Qualifiers will take place in Newmarket on Sunday August 30th while the details of the National Matchplay Qualifiers will be confirmed in due course.

MINORS:MINOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Gneeveguilla 1-14, Fossa 3-19:After a long lay off, competitive football resumed for the club when the minors took to the field in Gneeveguilla last Friday.Fossa got off to a great start, Padraic Talbot burst through from centre back and fed Darren Cronin who rattled the net. Emmett O’Shea then added a point before Gneeveguilla scored their first on 5 minutes, adding another shortly after from a free. Ruari Doyle then soloed through the middle and passed to Darren Croinin who score a good point. Further points from Emmett O ‘Shea, Eoghan Myers and Harry Kelly were answered by Gneeveguilla before the water break. Fossa got 4 further points before half time, answered by 2 from Gneeveguilla, half time score 1-11 to 0-06. The second half Fossa kept up the pressure scoring another couple of points before Harry Buckley scored a goal, Eoghan Myers then followed a high ball into the square and flicked the ball over the bar for a good point and Emmett O’ Shea pointed, Gneeveguilla did score a good goal but Fossa added a couple of points to answer that and a goal from Emmett O’Shea . The last play of the game saw Simon Coffey solo through from his wing back position to rifle over a neat point. The whole Fossa team can be happy, backs were very solid and efficient, midfield held their own and forwards had some good scores.

ALL THINGS...SPORT

JIMMY O’SULLIVAN-DARCY takes a look at all things sport...

Club ChampionshipsCromane and Ballylongford served up the opener for the County Junior Championship that everybody was hoping for. A close, competitive game, with a lot of skill and even more hunger and determination on display. Veterans Donnchadh Walsh in midfield and Sean O'Sullivan (0-5, 2f ) still directed the pulse of Cromane, but even more pleasing was to see young players on both sides step up to the mark; that's what club football is all about. Star of the show was young Darragh McKeefry, one of the stars of IS Killorglin's Frewen Cup victory last year, who notched a hat-trick on the day. The final scoreline was 4-13 to 1-15, but it was only in the last few minutes that McKeefry pounced for two goals to seal it. Hopefully the quality of football on display will set the tone for the games this weekend, with all the East Kerry clubs in action.

Attending the GamesUnfortunately, I didn't actually get to see that Cromane and Ballylongford clash in the flesh, so to speak. I doubt very much if ye did either. That's the times we live, and I'm afraid it does seem necessary at the moment. I know that John Horan is the most prominent of the many voices calling for the strict protocols to be relaxed as per the original schedule. Unfortunately, I also know that last week the Dr. Ronan Glynn (Department of Health) and Professor Philip Nolan (Nphet), Ireland's R number has risen from a low of 0.5 to somewhere between 1.4 and 1.8. People can argue the minutiae of the statistics and the numbers if they wish; the bottom line is that over 1 means that the virus is increasing and below 1 is decreasing. The start of the week has been good in terms of contracting the spread of coronavirus; hopefully that drop can be maintained. There are already contradictions in our approach to social distancing and safety guidelines when it comes to sports. The anomaly regarding the size and suitability of different venues has come up in other matters (e.g. mass) but is even more obvious in an outdoor event.. It was planned to increase the maximum attending an outdoor event to 500 from last Monday. That's the same number regardless of whether it's on at the old Fossa Pitch by Leibherr, which has no viewing facilities to speak of, or The Fitzgerald Stadium, which very much does. Nonetheless, these are the rules that apply and clubs have to apply them. As it stands, a maximum of 200 can attend a match, and that includes players, mentors, match officials, stewards, members of the press, and whatever small amount of spectators are allowed in. I honestly believe that with only 40 tickets per club for allocation to spectators (and there is no social distancing exception for people who are

cohabiting or discounts for age) which must be pre-booked, it would give clubs less of a headache to just play the games behind closed doors until some kind of reasonable number can be accommodated. Who decides which 40 want to get in and how? Ticket schemes such as the County Board pass don't apply in Kerry (they are given priority, though not guarantees because of number limitations, in Cork) until the number of spectators allowed is increased. Club volunteers? Familial association with players? Sponsorship? Volunteerism within the club? Who do you turn away? Is it the old George Orwell adage from 'Animal Farm'? “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others”?Those who do get to games are reminded that spectators should not attend if they are experiencing any covid symptoms, regardless of how mild, they are not to enter the field of play at any stage (including after the game), and they are very strongly recommend to wear a mask and to keep a record of interactions for contact tracing if it becomes necessary. It has been said so often it is becoming a cliché, but like many cliches it is based on an irrevocable and important truth. It's not about you protecting yourself or any one person from infection. It's about all of us co-operating in a simple way (a mask is not a big deal, keeping a respectful distance from people is not a big deal, washing your hands is surely as basic as it can get) to protect everyone.Watching the GamesI'd prefer if spectators could watch the games streamlined for a reasonable sum. Nemeton, who have streamlined games for TG4 and have signed a deal with most counties to broadcast their county championships, have agreed a deal with the Kerry County Board for games in Kerry, staring this weekend with Dr. Crokes versus Templenoe tonight and Kerins O'Rahillys versus Kenmare Shamrocks tomorrow. The games will cost E5 per match (very reasonable)

and can be accessed by logging in on the Kerry GAA website. However, the vast majority of clubs are capable of recording their matches themselves and either streaming them, putting them online, or even burning off dvds (I remember when a dvd was cutting edge technology, all those many years ago. Wow, I'm old). Obviously it can't be streamed at the same time as Nemeton, but maybe clubs can work something out with the County Board?

Club Championship PreviewsAll of the East Kerry clubs are in action this weekend. A lot of us can't be there in person for all the drama, thrills, mishaps, flukes, mistakes, funny moments, excitement, woe, and yes, the banter and gossip that are an integral part of a game that is so endemic to our sense of community. I'll be mostly depending on PRO's for match reports for the immediate future (just as I and anyone who writes about sports matches always has been; we rarely acknowledge it enough). It's impossible for obvious reasons to make predictions for the first round games based on current form, so instead I asked PROs and club officers how they feel their preparations have gone.

SeniorGroup 1: Dr. Crokes v Templenoe, Friday July 24th, 7.15pm, Fitzgerald StadiumDr. Crokes: John Keogh “Well, it's obviously a very tough opening game. Unfortunately, on top of that, Daithi Casey picked up a bad injury in a recent challenge game against Nemo, a completely accidental collision between two players but both Daithi and Nemo player Eoin Nation will be out injured. That's a big loss but more importantly a bad blow for the players themselves. Other than that, we are reasonably happy with our preparations, we have also played a number of internal challenge games and St. Finbarrs.

Group 2: Kilcummin v Killarney Legion, Saturday July 25th, 7.00pm, Lewis Rd.Legion: Enda Walshe “Obviously our next door neighbours, and it's always a very tough battle between the two sides at any grade. We have a bit of work done since training was allowed and we have a few challenge games played against the likes of Templenoe, Nemo, and Castlehaven, just to get players back into playing. We don't have any injuries, we have a few niggles and small strains alright as players get back up to speed. Like every other club, it's a bit of a step into the unknown, but we are happy with preparations anyway.Kilcummin: Michael O'Riordan “We have three weeks of training down and we have a couple of challenge games against Kilnamartra and Dromtariffe. Realistically, Legion are coming in with an O'Donoghue Cup win under their belts and that is a big boost for them but look, we are well capable of rising to the occasion. We did beat them in a very close game in our last league meeting, but that was a long time ago now. It'll all come down to who performs on the day and we are looking forward to it

IntermediateGroup 2: Currow v Spa, Saturday July 25th, 7.00pm, ListryCurrow: John Lyons “Seanie O'Leary has done great stuff as manager. Unfortunately Padraig O'Shea is working abroad and is out, while Ian Somers is hoping to be fit, but we have Conor Sheehan and Connie O'Connor up from minor to boost the panel. We have played challenge games against Milltown/Castlemaine and Dromid Pearses and they were good hard tests. We know that Spa are a very good side but we have prepared well and worked hard, it should be a very good game.Spa: Ivor Flynn “It's going to be a tough game against Currow, it always is, but there are no easy games out there. We're happy with how we are fixed, we have trained well since we got back into it and we have played a couple of challenge games, so hopefully we can perform on Saturday.”

Group 2: Glenflesk v Na Gaeil, Saturday July 25th, 7.00pm, Castleisland

Glenflesk: Seamus Healy “Everybody's in good shape and happy to be back in action, we have no injuries or anything like that. We have a couple of challenge games under the belt. Na Gaeil is a very tough draw, we all know that, given their exploits last year and the county players klike Diarmuid O'Connor and Jack Barry that they can call on. Still, we are looking forward to the game and hopefully we can get a result and take it from there.”

Group 3: Laune Rangers v Rathmore, Friday July 24th, 7.15pm, DireenRathmore: Mary Darmody “We have no real injuries other than Cathal Ryan (collar bone). Training has gone well. We played Mallow and Miltown/Malbay in challenge games so they have played some bit of football, but we know Laune Rangers have put in as much work as they can since teams got back to training. It's nice to get back to playing games, even if unfortunately most of us won't be able to see them.”

JuniorGroup 1: Fossa v Ballyduff, Saturday July 25th, 7.00pm, Austin Stack ParkFossa: Shane Kelly “It's a tough draw, Ballyduff are a very good side. We have played a few challenge games and we have had internal matches, we have a great turn-out at training. We've put in a lot of work since training resumed and hopefully that will stand to us. It is an awful shame though that more supporters on both sides can't watch the game; there will be great club people who won't get to see it.”

Group 1: Gneeveguilla v St. Pats, Sunday July 26th, 7.00pm, CordalGneeveguilla: Michael O'Riordan “Everybody's fit and ready to go. We've played three good challenge games against North Cork teams but look, we'll really find out the shape we are in next Saturday, until then you don't really know. It's the same for St. Pats and the same for every club out there, we just have to do the best we can. It's a small bit of a pity for all the clubs that there's no All Ireland campaign, but every club is going to go for it and at least we have games

to be playing.”

Group 2: Beale v Cordal, Saturday July 25th, 7.00pm, BealeCordal: Tim O'Donoghue “Beale is always a tough spot to come out of with something, I played agaimnst them myself often enough! We will be mising John O'Connor who is away working and Kevin Walsh with an injury, but we have a big panel to draw from – we have 25 to 27 down at training every night. Several players who would be away teaching outside of Kerry at this time are available, so that's a

boost for us at the moment. We have played Keel, Firies, and Rahilys B in challenge games so hopefully they will stand to us. We are all looking forward to having a game, even if most of the club won't be able to watch it, and I'd guess that its the same for every club.”

Group 3: Listry v Firies, Sunday July 26th, 2.00pm, KilcumminListry: Anne O'Brien “We obviously haven't met in a while but the two teams know each other well by now! It'll be very tight, it always is between us. We got back to training three weeks ago and everybody has put in a great effort. We played Dromid Pearses and John Mitchels recently in challenge games and both of those will hopefully stand to us on the day.Firies: James Daly “We've met our next door neighbours fairly often in recent years. We met twice last year and the decision went their way both times, so hopefuilly we can reverse that! We have a good sized panel, with Mike Daly and Jack Sherwood the veterans. Most of the players were U21 this year or last year. We've played challenge games against Cordal, Ballydesmond, and Millstreet since we got back into training and hopefully those games will stand to us.”

NoviceGroup 2: Scartaglin v Valentia, Sunday July 26th,Scartaglin: Thomas Culloty “Training has gone well in the past few weeks, most lads have been available and sessions have been good. We do have a few lads who are carrying small knocks but we think everybody will hopefully be alright for Sunday. We have played a few challenge games but as well know, championship is a completely different intensity. We don't really know much about Valentia's form at the moment for obvious reasons, I'm sure it's the same for other clubs, but we are relishing the chalenge and rearing to get back in action.”

QuestionI am unhappy with the repair work a builder has done to my house, he hasn’t fixed the issue and he refuses to put it right. Do I have any rights in this situation?

AnswerIf your builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to make a claim against them using the small claims procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim for under the small claims procedure is €2,000. The small claims procedure is provided through local District Court offices. If you have purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business, you can make a claim using the small claims procedure. You can make claims for bad workmanship, minor damage to property, faulty goods and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties, for example, a holiday home. Businesses can also use this procedure to make claims against other businesses about contracts for goods or services purchased. To make a claim, you need to complete the application form and submit it and a fee of €25 to the Small Claims Registrar. You can do this online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie. Alternatively, you can download the application form from courts.ie or get a copy from the Small Claims Registrar at the District Court office. Make sure you include the correct name and address of the company or person you are claiming against. You can double-check this information on the Companies Registration Office website at cro.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person you are making the claim against. If the other person does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed. Then the court will make an order in your favour for the amount claimed, and direct that it be paid within a specific period of time. If your claim is disputed, the Registrar will give you a copy of the reasons why the other person is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. If no settlement can be reached, the matter is set for a court hearing in the District Court.

MUCKROSS ROWING CLUBCOVID-19Training has continued with ongoing caution regarding the evolving public health advice and guidance in relation to COVID-19. The deferral of Phase 4 of the government roadmap has highlighted the requirement for ongoing vigilance by all members regarding social distancing, hand hygiene and sanitisation of equipment.EVENT UPDATESA revised schedule of rowing events was due to commence next weekend based on the country entering Phase 4 of the government roadmap on Monday, July 20. With the extension of Phase 3 until at least Monday, August 10, the limit on outdoor gatherings will remain limited

to 200 people. Outdoor gatherings of up to 500 were due to be permitted in Phase 4. This has forced the organisers of Castleconnell Regatta to postpone their fixture from August 1 to a later date which is to be confirmed. The Lough Rynn Regatta set for August 8 is likely to suffer a similar fate. As of this weekend, the next event of interest to the club is the Cork Marina Regatta on Saturday, August 16. However, all event plans for August and September are now increasingly tentative due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19.

Lee Strand County League Well done to Milltown/Castlemaine Under 12 teams on a valiant effort against strong Firies U12 sides.

Our U12 Green Team produced a courageous display against strong opponents and showed immense character but came up short in the end against a strong Firies side. Our U12 White Team were also to miss out in the end by the narrowest of margins losing by just the one point. Well done to both teams with some fantastic football on display.

Next up for our U12 sides is another short trip this time to Keel next Sunday evening at 6pm for Round 2 of this first phase of the County League. A big thank you to both sets of players, coaches, officials and all the supporters.

Thank you also to Foleys Spar here in Milltown for their sponsorship of our clubs Coiste na nÓg teams.

Killarney Athletic Under 17s

Killarney Celtic A squad warming up prior to Greyhound Bar Cup game vs Killorglin AFC.

It’s sixteen years ago now, since Mickey Martin banned us smokers,

From blowing all our noxious fumes, into the lungs of waiters.

He banished us to the night air, where we poisoned ourselves,

And indulged in deadly craic, without a touch of nerves.

That was back in two thou four, when Leeds were relegated,

From the top flight in football, and the drop created,

Shock waves among the faithful, who followed Leeds for many years,

And they thought they’d go straight back up, without any fears.

For sixteen years they lived in hope, and often nearly made it,

But they didn’t have that luck, of which winners need a surfeit.

Dave O’Leary was once a God, up in Elland Road,

Like Don Revie was before him, but Brian Clough was bold.

Their pedigree was excellent, with hard men to the fore,

And Big Jack and Johnny Giles, are part of Leeds folklore.

Their supporters all are steadfast, and stuck with them all along,

And through all the heartache days, they cheered and sang their songs.

But nothing lasts forever, and now Leeds are back,

Sadly within a week of when they lost Big Jack.

They know he’s up in heaven, with that big Charlton grin,

Smiling down on Elland Road, as the glory days begin.
