A Note Burning ThanksgivingThe Sanctuary was filled
on Thanksgiving Day as people gathered at Trinity to thank God for His many blessings. During the sermon, Pastor Dorn surprised the congregation by inviting forward the members of Trinity's Governing Board and Steve Block, Executive Director of the Texas District Church Extension Fund. Pastor Dorn shared that the balance of the loan on the Family Life Center built in 1996 (School, Gym and Offices) had just been paid off. The original Installment Deed of Trust Note dated January 5, 1998 in the amount of $2,467,635.54 had a balance of
$176,119.96. Steve Block told the congregation that this loan had been amortized over 30 years but was paid off in just 13 years.
Pastor Dorn said, "On this day we can add a special thanks to God for the way in which He has provided financially for this congregation." "I heard that the Pastors of this congregation were matchless," Steve Block responded as he pulled a large match shaped lighter from his jacket pocket. Members of the Board took hold of the mortgage marked "Paid In Full" as Steve Block lit it on fire.
Following applause from the congregation and as the fire and smoke subsided, Pastor Dorn shared that we are aggressively tackling the HUG2 mortgage on the new Education Center. The current monthly payment on the $5.2 million dollar note is $24,825.60 and we are taking in much more than that. All funds designated to HUG2 are being immediately put against the loan which means we are currently making more than double payments each month. "We hope to pay this one off early too," Pastor Dorn said to Steve Block in front of the congregation.

January Sermon Series "Once Upon A Marriage"
There's nothing quite like a juicy love story...the romance, the intrigue, and maybe a little scandal. We're digging in to some of the greatest biblical marriages to see what we can learn. Travel back in time with us for Once Upon a Marriage.
Blood Donor SundayOur first Blood Donor Sunday for 2012 will be held
January 15, 2012, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Mary & Martha Fellowship Hall in the basement. Signup sheets will be in the foyer, narthex and in the hallway outside of 931 service if you would like to sign up ahead of time and save a special spot. Also our Health Cabinet will be calling all of you who have donated in the past to set up an appointment time the week before the drive. Your signing up ahead of time gives us an estimate of how many donors to expect and then the Blood Center sends out the appropriate number of workers. If we know in advance about how many of you will be donating, ample help will be at our drive to keep things running smoothly. We look forward to a very successful drive this winter. Double red cell and combination whole blood and plasma machines will also be available for those wishing to donate that way. Both count for two donations.
REMINDER!! The minimum donor age requirement to give blood is now 16 years old with a parent’s permission. Weight must be 122 lbs. (still 110 lbs. for 17 and older) and in general good health.
REMEMBER: one unit of blood can save as many as three lives as it is broken down into three components – red blood cells, platelets and plasma. The Health Cabinet looks forward to speaking to each of you again so anticipate the call.
May our Lord keep you healthy and you can continue to contribute the gift of life!

Trinity's Holtkamp Pipe OrganMajestic in sound and noble in sight, this fine pipe organ has
provided a means for inspirational worship for many years. It is used each Sunday as the main instrument to lead worship for the 8:15 a.m. Liturgical service and in concert with piano and strings for the 11:00 a.m. Traditional service. On Festival Sundays, Trinity's beautiful sanctuary with its stained glass windows is filled with music from the choir, pipe organ, and brass or woodwind ensembles. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
The pipe organ at Trinity Lutheran Church downtown Houston was built by Holtkamp Organ Company of Cleveland, Ohio (est. 1855) and dedicated on November 21, 1954. The instrument was designed by Walter Holtkamp in consultation with Paul Bunjes, a member of the music faculty at Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois.
Besides its pedal division, the organ has three manuals: Great, Swell and Positiv. The console was replaced in 1978 and built by Visser-Rowland. It is made of red mahogany and walnut with keys of rosewood and satinwood. With the exception of the Swell pipes, which are enclosed in a chamber, the organ is unenclosed. This allows the pipes to speak freely and clearly into the nave of the church from an open west gallery location to dynamically support and encourage the hymnody of the Lutheran tradition. With the choir in front of the organ and the organ console in front of the choir at the edge of the gallery, the congregation will hear the music as a blended unit of sound to lead and inspire congregational singing.
The organ's appearance was given a contemporary design by Mr. Holtkamp to blend the beautiful metal and wood pipes into one harmonious scheme. This attractive pipe work display, a thing of visual beauty, was the first of its kind in downtown Houston. The wood pipes are made of pine, and the metal pipes are made of zinc, copper and alloys consisting of various proportions of tin and lead to produce specific tonal results. The organ has over 2,000 individual pipes divided into 40 ranks, with a capacity to expand to 48 ranks. The size of the pipes range from 32 feet to the size of a pencil. The starburst Zimbelstern, attached to the Swell chamber, is a wheel of small bells that produces a joyful tinkling sound. This rare instrument, which originated in Germany in the 16th century, was given in memory of Miss Emilie Hoop by Therese Mohnke and M. E. & Polly Mohnke in 1962.
This magnificent instrument is played to the Glory of God during church services, weddings, funerals, concerts and recitals.
The following are some of the organists (both local and international) who have held recitals at Trinity: • Karl Richter (11-2-1956), eminent German organist & director of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig.• Carl Weinrich (2-5-1958), Director of Music at Princeton University Chapel.• Heinrich Fleischer (6-30-1958), direct descendant of Martin Luther; organ professor at Lutheran University,
Valparaiso, Indiana.• Herbert Garske (5-5-1959), Organist and Choirmaster of Trinity Lutheran Church and School, Houston, Texas,
then Professor of Music and Humanities at Concordia Lutheran College, Ann Arbor, Michigan. Co-founder of the Houston Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and its president for two terms.
• Finn Videro (3-29-1960), from Copenhagen, Denmark; Professor of music & Chapel organist at Yale University.• Marilyn Mason (11-6-1961), First American woman to play the organ in recital at Westminister Abbey, Faculty
member of University of Michigan.• Jan Bender (5-11-1962), Organ Department Head of Concordia College, Seward, Nebraska.

Church Extension Fund ExplainedAs Texas Lutherans, we are fortunate to have The Texas District of the Church Extension
Fund (“CEF”), which holds the $5.2 million note on the new Education Center. This organization was formed in 1906 to provide consultation and low cost funds to assist Texas congregations to build and expand. In addition to funding expansions such as ours, the CEF provides financing for mission congregations, the Missouri Synod Texas District itself, and for LCMS-recognized service organizations in Texas to further the Great Commission: “Go ye, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” Many believers have acted upon this directive, as the CEF now has over 13,000 investors and $160 million in assets. These funds currently assist more than 130 Texas–Missouri Synod congregations.
Unlike other lending institutions, the CEF does not seek to maximize its profits. Instead, it pays a competitive rate to its LCMS investors, operates on a very small margin, and lends these funds at low interest rates to help expand God’s kingdom. As members of Trinity, we have the opportunity to maximize our investments in two ways: to help the CEF further its mission and to help defray some of the cost of Trinity’s current note. As investments by Trinity members, and the church treasury itself, increase as a percentage of our note’s balance, Trinity becomes eligible for interest rate rebate checks from the CEF. We are not eligible for these rebates until our total investments reach at least 50% of the note’s current balance. Per Wes Krueger, our congregational representative with the CEF, we are moving closer to that level each day.
Several investment options are available for individuals, including: Save-by-Mail, Fixed-Rate Term Notes, Floating-Rate Term Notes, IRA’s, and the K.I.D.S. Stamp Program. Current rates from the CEF website on December 12th are:
Save-By-Mail - Save-By-Mail accounts are great short-term savings accounts since the minimum required balance is only $10. They are particularly valuable accounts to open for children and grandchildren and coordinate with the K.I.D.S. stamp program. Deposits and withdrawals can be made at any time.
Fixed-Rate Term Notes - These notes are available at one-year, three-year, and five-year fixed rates and a minimum investment of $500. Once opened, funds cannot be added to the note. Withdrawals without penalty may be made at maturity. The early withdrawal penalty is three month’s interest for one-year and three-year notes and six month’s interest for five-year notes. At this time a special promotion, “100 Plus 1 Anniversary Challenge”, adds a full percentage point to your fixed rate note when you donate to Texas Partners in Mission toward planting 10 new ministries a year. Details are at: www.texascef.org/reps-promo.html.
Variable-Rate Term Notes - One-year, three-year and five-year floating-rate notes are available with a minimum investment of $500. Rates for these notes float during the term of the investment. The interest rate is indexed to the US Treasury Constant Maturity (“TCM”) for US Treasury securities of the same maturity as the notes. Additions are permitted at any time in minimum amounts of $25. This makes these investments ideal for a regular savings plan utilizing Texas CEF’s electronic funds transfer service. Funds may be withdrawn at maturity without penalty. The early withdrawal charge is the same as for the fixed-rate notes above.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRA’s, rollovers, Roth, Education Accounts) - Individual retirement accounts (IRAs) are available through special arrangements with LCEF. These investments support Texas District congregations too. Traditional, Roth and Education accounts can be opened with a simple telephone call. LCEF will also handle IRA rollovers from existing retirement accounts for you. Remember: when you open your IRA with LCEF tell them, “I want this investment to support Texas District Church Extension Fund for my Congregation.” Call 1-800-THE-LCEF (or 1.800.854.4004).
K.I.D.S. Stamp Program (Kids into Discipleship & Stewardship) - One way that young people can actively support the ministry is through Texas CEF's KIDS Stamp Program. This program, offered in day schools and Sunday Schools, allows children to purchase stamps that can be exchanged for investments in a CEF account upon completion of a stamp booklet. Youngsters also learn the benefits of saving while getting involved in the ministry. Hundreds of young people throughout Texas are participating in the ministry of CEF, learning biblical stewardship principles, and saving for the future through the KIDS Stamp Program. With each $10 deposit, a child receives a sticker and a token worth 25 cents toward their next deposit. Prizes are available when the account balance reaches a significant milestone, such as $100 or $300. It is a joy to watch your investment grow. It is an even greater joy for stewards of any age to watch the church grow. To learn more or to request the KIDS stamp video, contact Darlene Greer at 888.951.1CEF (toll free) or 512.926.4272 or email [email protected].
Please prayerfully consider supporting the mission of the Church and the CEF with your investments. If you have any questions, or wish to discuss the options further, please contact Wesley Krueger at 713.686.0363. You can also read more about the CEF at its website: http://www.texascef.org/
Happy New Year!! - The 7 Ups!(I received this as an email that said “HAPPY AUTUMN”. I think it can apply to the New Year as well)
1. Wake Up !! - Decide to have a good day. “This is the day the Lord hath made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118.24
2. Dress Up !! – The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. “The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 6:7
3. _ _ _ _ _ _!! In other words, “BE QUIET” !! This “Up” is not acceptable language in my vocabulary nor for our newsletter. Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking. “He who guards his lips guards his soul.” Proverbs 13:3
4. Stand Up!! - ….For what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything. “Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…” Galatians 6:9-10
5. Look Up !! - …To the Lord. “I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:136. Reach Up!! …For something higher. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding.
In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-67. Lift Up!! … Your prayers. “Do not worry about anything, instead PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING.” Philippians 4:6
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.
Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:12-13Julie Bertrand, Parish Nurse

Homeless Christmas MealHomeless Christmas meal was a blessing and tons of fun! That's the words that volunteers and guest have reported
back to me. We served the Lord by serving people turkeys, ham, variety of vegetables and desserts and gave 150 guest gift cards for the Salvation Army store.
Trinity’s congregation, family and friends did a fantastic job of serving our Lord Jesus Christ. We were blessed with as many volunteers as we had guests. This opportunity gave our volunteers time to visit and pray with many of our guests. The Lord worked on many hearts that day. I had several volunteers email me Sunday night with stories of blessings they experienced by helping with this event. Praise God!
I want to personally thank everyone that was a part of this, whether you cooked something or stayed an hour or all day. This was a great success because you allowed the Lord to work through you.

TLS Annual Nativity Scene The students of the
Trinity Lutheran School - Education Center are proud to present their annual Nativity Scene. Each student has created a special piece which helps to tell the story of the birth of Jesus. Infants - Pre-Kindergarten students have created the stars of the night sky. The Kindergarten students have made the sheep who traveled with the shepherds. First Graders have made animals to witness the birth and Second Graders have created the people in the story, including the Inn Keeper, Wise Men, and the Holy Family. Third Graders provided the Heavenly Host who heralded the birth and the Fourth Graders built the stable. We hope that you will find the time to stop by and view this special display. We hope that it helps enrich your holiday experience and reminds us all of the true joys of the season.

May our offerings through HUG2 bring glory to His kingdom and may all who enter through the doors of the school grow in love and faith, and may all come to know Him more dearly so they can go out and share this with others.
We Pray
• For growth in the faith of individuals
• For growth in the faith of the congregation
• For life-changing experiences
• That we might lead people to Trinity who need our ministry and need to hear His Word
• That He would guide us as we continue to plan for the future
• That we will pay in full our financial debt for the Education Center
May God richly bless the efforts of our church and may the Holy Spirit move each of us to step out in faith and give back to the One who has given us everything.

The theme for this year’s observance of “Life Sunday” is Trust God! Choose Life! based on Deuteronomy 30: 19b: “Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.”
From the womb to the tomb, all human life is God’s creation. The Crisis Pregnancy Center bus has been a wonderful blessing for life. This bus ministry of the Houston Coalition for Life has been in place since March 2011. The statistics: 378 visits; 59 repeats; 130 negative pregnancy tests; 176 positive pregnancy tests; 155 chose life - babies saved; 21 babies lost; 13 for more information; 176 ultrasounds. Pray for Lutherans For Life and the Houston Coalition for Life . . . and all who choose life over death. God bless our ministry to all people.
Our thanks to Trinity members and friends who withstood some hot days to pray at the Planned Parenthood Center this past year.

Prayers and Promises by Pastor David Leeland
A Blessed and Happy New Year to you all!I’ve been meditating on the whole concept of Great Marriage. What
makes a Great Marriage? What does it take to have a Great Marriage? What does a Great Marriage look like? And, how do I know when I have a Great Marriage?
There are five aspects to a Great Marriage: Faith, Friendship, Fun, Family and Finances.
You know you have a Great Marriage when you are growing and continue to grow
 As you share your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ together; your Worship, your prayers, your sharing and study and serving and giving Jesus to others;
 As you become better and better friends and go deeper in friendship with one another, knowing each other’s hearts and humor;
 As you not only remember how to have fun with each other but actually plan the fun, make time for fun and get creative in your fun that the fun factor and joy factor overflows in everything you do together;
 As you build and celebrate your family traditions, appreciate your families of origin, bless your children by giving them roots to grow and wings to fly and then look to the legacy of life you are giving them;
 And learn to manage well your finances not only to protect yourselves from the ups and downs of our economy but especially to glorify the LORD as great stewards of all His many blessings to resource your life together and to enable you to be generous givers;
As you celebrate life together and look back at how you are doing from time-to-time, you will discover that you have a Great Marriage!
What powers and empowers a Great Marriage is deep love and commitment to one another, the kind of love and commitment that says, “No matter what! Come what may! I am yours and you are mine and we are in this together for as long as we both shall live, so let’s have some fun!”
St. Paul writes these familiar and yet truly wonderful words in 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8a:4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it
is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. [ESV]
First and foremost, these inspiring words describe the love of Christ Jesus and become a model for us to pray for and strive for as we seek to love one another as our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ so deeply loves us. May you be strengthened in the love of Christ!
Please join me in making this New Year, 2012, the Year of Great Marriage! We will be offering a new class called Great Marriage! in 2012. The first Great Marriage Class starts on Valentine’s
Day, February 14th from 6-9 p.m. This will be an awesome way to enrich your Great Marriage or to get ready for your Great Marriage. Please connect with Suzanne Kurth at [email protected] to register or get more information.
A second way to make 2012 a year to make your marriage great is to already plan to participate in our October Marriage First Retreat.
Mark your calendars, input your computers, iPhones and iPads and any other scheduling device you use for: Marriage First Retreat, October 12-13-14, 2012. Our Theme is: “Happiness And Hope!” Our Scripture Text is 1 Thessalonians 1:2-10 [ESV].
Thank You To Our Friends at TrinityThank you so very much for your generous food donation to St. Joseph Social Ministry on November 5. It seems
like this was the largest amount ever. Most of it was used for our November food distribution - almost 200 families. The number has drastically increased from last year. So many are out of work and come from all over the city. So, we are truly grateful to you, our neighbors, for this help. God bless each of you!
Many prayers, Sister Lucia

Sunday School for 3 & 4-year-oldsIt’s easy for me to name my favorite hour of every week - I love Sunday School. I love
talking to children about Jesus, and as I tell every newcomer to our class: We always have fun. Julie May, Veronica Freyer and I teach Trinity's Sunday School class for 3s and 4s, a chance for little ones to get together and learn about Jesus' love as it relates to their lives and their world. Our hour always seems to fly by.
We begin each class with a welcoming game, activity or craft that has something to do with our Bible story or the church season, and gives us an opportunity to talk with the children as they play. It may be a selection of puzzles, doctor supplies with which we can "treat" each other's
ills, blocks, trains, memory games, or crafts that may involve paint, scissors and even glitter! Next we "get our wiggles out" during Singing Time, always beginning with "Jesus Loves Me." Our Bible lessons are drawn from both the Old and New Testaments, and are written in age-appropriate language in the Early Childhood edition of Concordia's "Growing in Christ" series. The stories often span several weeks, and we teachers are frequently amazed by the responses we get from kids as we review the past week’s story. At least once a month we have a “jaw-drop” experience when one of our young students pops up with some obscure answer. They may be small but they are sponges for learning about God!
Our class includes children who have recently turned 3 years old up to those turning 5, so we have a wide range of motor skills and attention spans, but the children get along well and learn to be helpful and kind to each other. The materials that come with the lessons are very good
and the children enjoy the stickers and crafts. We end our class with the Lord’s Prayer.
We welcome members and guests alike – A recent visitor told me at the end of class, “You know what? This was really fun!” Wow - I think I must have the best job in the world.

“Engaging the Aging” Healthcare Centers (or, as the older ones still call themselves, nursing homes) are full of people who could use a
helping hand. After all, moving into their new home can be a major change in their lives. For some, it can bring worries, fears, and frustrations. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and feelings of being shut in or shut out. What can we do to enhance and enrich their lives?
1) Pay a visit on a regular basis, and be willing to be a good listener.2) Send a greeting card on special occasions. It’s a very simple but loving expression that can make their day.3) Pray with them! Yes, invite them to join you in a candid conversation with God, read a verse from Scripture that
extends hope and encouragement.4) If possible, offer to take a resident for a walk in the outdoors or for a ride in the courtyard.Engaging the Aging – Fall 2010
Gala 2012Have you marked your calendars for Friday, March 30? If not do
so right now! That is the date of our next Gala and the theme will be Mardi Gras Masquerade and it will be held at The Bell Tower on 34th! Ticket prices will be $75/person. There are so many ways in which you can help. We would love to treat all of our Faculty & Staff and have them attend at no cost so if you would be willing to donate to this or sponsor a teacher it would be greatly appreciated! Also, we are in need of beads, masks, and any other Mardi Gras themed decorations. Want to help out or have a question? Please feel free to contact Christina Putman at [email protected] or 713.412.2453. Thanks!

$100 Million in Mighty MitesA recent news release from the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML)
notes that the organization has gathered $100 million in mites since the founding of the organization in 1942. By the grace of God, faithful supporters from across the nation have given their “mites” (voluntary monetary donations) to achieve the LWML’s ongoing mission goals. This amazing total combines funds from the 40 districts and the national level of the LWML.
Supporters today are linked with the founders of LWML who gathered in Chicago nearly 70 years ago and have supported Christian outreach in 42 countries on five continents through the years. As Lutheran Women in Mission today celebrate this milestone, they join with those women of the past as they continue to fill Mite Boxes to encourage the ongoing spread of the Gospel into the future.
Ladies Circle Ministries and the Women’s Club at Trinity are affiliated with the LWML at the local, Texas District, and national level and invite more women at Trinity to join with them in this mission effort.

LINC Chaplaincy Ministry Each week, countless patients and their
family members, are visited, prayed for, counseled and loved through the chaplaincy ministry of LINC-Houston, supported by many congregations and Century Club members. We have been able to provide advocacy to maintain a Christian Chapel at MD Anderson Hospital. Pastor Walter Dube, who serves as Chaplain, continues to be faithful in providing the message of hope to those who need it most. If not already, please consider becoming a financial supporter of this ministry. To do so, please send your check to LINC-Houston - 161 West Road, Houston, TX 77037, with a memo “Chaplaincy Ministry.” You may also send it through our congregation by using the envelope in the church pew and marking it “LINC Chaplaincy Ministry.”
“Life Quotes” from Lutherans For Life"It’s OK to be old. That doesn’t mean that you’re washed up and useless.
If you’re a Christian, what it really means is that you’re just very, very close to seeing Jesus in person in heaven. In words especially dear to all the ‘aging,’ Jesus said in John, chapter 14, ‘Don’t let your hearts be troubled … In My Father’s house are many rooms. I am going there to prepare a place for you.’ You might call it homecoming."
Pastor Mark Jeske, speaker on "Time of Grace""Life Quotes" are from Lutherans For Life – www.lutheransforlife.org.
Car Care - January 14The Car Care Ministry team will be
providing car maintenance and washes on Saturday, January 14th, from 8:30 - 11:00 a.m.
