Seymour College Has Talent …………….. Last Friday evening the Community Arts Centre came alive with ‘Seymour College Has Got Talent’!!! Congratulations to all students, across P-12 and Specialist Education, who performed during the auditorium show and those that exhibited pieces of Art.

The staged part of the evening commenced with songs from our wonderful Grade 3-7 ‘Pop choir’, followed by a vocal solo from Year 11 student Jasmine Smale with her rendition of ‘Royals’. She was joined on stage by our very flexible acrobats/dancers from the junior school. Jasmine also produced a stunning performance of ‘People Help The People’ later in the evening, accompanied by Johans Panchoo on piano. Johans and Max Hooper’s musical ability was appreciated by all throughout the night! Year 7 student Kiarnee Fletcher recited her own touching monologue titled ‘Earth’. In the same theme, Caragh Scheid choreographed a lovely dance to ‘Last day on Earth’. Another stirring vocal performance on the night came from Jayden Collins singing ‘Take a Bow’. Caitlin and Ellisa Grant provided a vocal/dance sister act performing ‘Next to Me’, that lifted the roof. Year 12 student Jessica Bulley lightened the mood with her version of ‘Kiss Me’ and then teamed with Ashleigh Paholek in a piano duet of ‘Sunday Morning’ that delighted the audience. Ashleigh earlier entertained the crowd with a beautiful piano recital of ‘River Flows In You’. Newly formed Year 10 duo Maddie Ure -vocal and Mitchell Warren-guitar, brought a touch of folk music to the event with truly memorable performances of ‘Killing Me Softly’ and The Beatles classic ‘Something’. Our WOW factor and ultimate crowd pleaser of the evening came from the Year 8/9 dance act, Kombat Krew’, choreographed and performed by Abbey Baker, Lauren Washington, Shania Anderson, Mackenzie Garner, Carly Burgess and Chloe Thomas. These girls really did themselves proud with a highly polished and visually spectacular performance. On behalf of Laura Powell and myself, I would like to thank all of the staff and students that supported the production of the show, specifically, Margaret Milburn, Ian Fraser and Colin Skidmore. As well as our MC’s for the night – David Mills, Louise Paholek, Steve Garner and Soul Gerdsen-Jensen. Seymour College REALLY does have TALENT! Jeynelle McLennan

Principals Report ………………. Opening of the Technical Trade Centre Yesterday the College welcomed Brendan O'Connor, the Federal Minister for Employment and also the Minister for Skills and Training, and Rob Mitchell the Member for McEwen to open the new Trade Training Centre. The Central Ranges Trade Centre is one part of four hubs that were funded with $12m of Federal Funding. Our share was $5.2m and our new centre is up and running and now officially opened. The College applied for this funding as part of a Consortium of nine schools prior to the merger. The hubs are at Alexandra Secondary College, Assumption College, Whittlesea College and Seymour College and we have had a remarkable journey to get here. I am delighted that the vision, resolve and resilience of this group with support from many others has resulted in a fine addition to the provision of schooling and training in this area. The local LLEN and the TAFE Colleges have been strong supporters of the application to the Federal Government. Many thanks to Jim Alsop, Principal at Broadford Secondary College who took on the Lead School role, David Mills for his work in the technical design of the facilities and his seamless work with trade staff from Seymour and Whittlesea and David Aisbett, former head of the Regeneration Governance Board and manager of the TTCs for the last two years. This facility is hosted by the College but belongs to the consortium and will be used for welding, engineering and automotive training. All our VET programs will be hosted here and with its opening it closes the chapter on stage one of rebuilding the College. We will now turn our attention to the final two stages.

Seymour’s Got Talent What an understatement! Last Friday night our students from all parts of the College were outstanding in the production staged at the CAC.

The program was sold out as well! Our young musicians, singers and dancers created a wonderful program for the evening. It was just amazing to see the skills of our young people and the enthusiasm of the students and staff that helped create the evening. As well a complementary Arts program was on display in the foyer space and this was a great display and added to the theme of the night. A really big thank you to Jeynelle and Laura, our Student Welfare Coordinators who did so much to make the night the memorable evening it was. Tim McCartin, Principal

Junior Learning Community News …………………………….. Preps 2014: Enrolment packs have been delivered to the pre-schools this week. If anyone knows of families not currently at kinder could they let them know that the school is now taking prep enrolments for 2014. Lois Kelly, P-4 Leader 1/2 Learning Community The students in the 1/2 Learning Community are continuing with Discovery Learning. We are currently making apple crumbles in cookery; imaginative constructions from boxes and materials; PowerPoint presentations on the computer; and building using Lego-type materials and then learning to use the cameras and MP3 recorders to make an audio-visual record of

our creations. Our focus text type in literacy is narrative, and the students have been exploring its structure and features during reading and writing learning sessions. In numeracy the students are investigating 3D shapes and continuing with number operations. Reminders: Could students please read every night and bring their reader covers to school each day? We would welcome an art smock for each child. The playground equipment is ‘Out of Bounds’ after school.

Last week Seymour College hosted Local Member for Seymour, MLA, Cindy McLeish in the Principal for a day program. Cindy spent the day with College Principal, Tim McCartin observing a day in the life of the College. The day started with a walk through the P-4 building observing the junior groups in their literary blocks. This work is done every morning as it is often the best learning time. Cindy was able to observe the new spaces with the students and teachers hard at work in their new building. As the day progressed all sectors of the College were visited and the master plan for stage 2 and 3 of the building program outlined. Mrs McLeish finished the day with her own generous awards to outstanding students from the College. The College Principal, Mr McCartin, stated he was extremely appreciative of her visit and support in the progress of the regeneration program.

Bailey Harriden from Year 8 gained sponsorship from Cindy McLeish for the RACV Energy Breakthrough. He is part of the Junior team raising money for the event in November at

Maryborough.

Book Week 2013 - Read across the Universe Numerous activities were run in the 7-12 Library at recess and lunch during Bookweek. Congratulations to our Trivia Quest champions: Lachlan Itter, Jordan Neal, Andy Monarco & Cody Dare. The students had a great time taking part in a How sharp are your eyes? challenge, viewing space based images and decorating frogs, both in icing and on paper!, being photographed in our very own tardis (thanks to Mr MacLeod-Smith), Thanks to all who participated - it was, yet again, a wonderful week of celebrations!
