President Raphaël:

- welcomed the guests and asked them to introduce themselves. - noted the apologies from Rtns. Hon. Member Daniel, SaA Sally, John C., IPP Robin, Henny John G., Guy, Alex, Handy, Steffen, John vG and Christiane. - thanked the following Members for inviting some Guests to the Vocational Tour:

Rtn. Barbara for inviting Dr. Wira Goterot. Rtn. Jörg for inviting Tony Raka Hartawan and Ratih Hartawan.

- thanked Rtns. Detlev & Lusi for raising IDR 2,050,000 at their brunch on Sunday, 18 August. These funds will be allocated to the Yayasan Senyum Bali (Smile Foundation). http://www.senyumbali.org - informed members about PDG Kuhn’s daughter’s wedding which will be on Sunday, 25 August 2013 at 18:00 at the TAMAN HAGAWAN BALI, Jln. Pratama No. 70, Tanjung Benoa.

CP Patrick informed the club about his vacation to Lancaster, England to see his daughter and two granddaughters (Lancashire Red Roses). He then proceeded to tell the members about visiting our former members, Irene Millar and Abdul Rahim in Perth, Scotland at their ‘summer cottage’ (left). Irene gave the Club three banners from Rotary clubs in the area, including one from the RC of Perth (founded in 1917). In addition, CP Patrick told the Club that Irene and Abdul had recently been invited to join this very prestigious RC of Perth. And finally - he happily reported that Irene and Rahim had no problems in taking their ‘lively’ Bali dog back home to Scotland.

Rtn. Marie Francoise (right) talked about the Rotaville (Rotary Village) Project. This Project is a Global Grant approved this year to provide public drinking water, lavatories, laundering facilities, malnourished children and some revolving loans for Gulinten sub-village and Bunutan Village in Karangasem. 11 Rotary Clubs in Bali (D3420) - including the RCBS - have joined this project. The international partners are four Rotary Clubs from Andong, Korea (D3630).

ANNOUNCEMENTS

3

‘What is Contemporary Art? / The Bali Art Society’ by Rtn. Jörg Starke and Pak Tony Raka

Rtn. Marie Francoise said that the RCBS is responsible for sanitation and education for Elementary School #6 (SD#6) in Bunutan. She went to Bunutan on 7 August 2013 with the Project Coordinator, PP Suzana Chandra from the RC of Bali Denpasar and seven architects from Udayana University (UNUD). Rtn. Marie Francoise explained the needs to renovate the PC room and build two more toilets for the school. Construction will take place early next month and 100 Rotarians will be expected to visit Bali from Andong, Korea to work together with us on the site.

Rtn. Barbara introduced her guest, Dr. Wira Gotera (left) who is an endocrinologist at Prima Medika Hospital. After informing Dr. Gotera that she is a Rotarian, he told her about his involvement in the Widya Paramit Foundation located in Denpasar. The Foundation’s aim is to help children with ‘Special Needs’ (Bina Mandiri Community Learning Center), Autism, ADD, ADHD, Cerebral Facial, Down Syndrome, Asperger Syndrome and others. Rtn. Barbara is planning to invite Dr. Gotera as a guest speaker, so that he will be able to explain in detail his Foundation’s needs. Dr. Gotera gave several copies of his proposal to P Raphaël for his review and consideration.

Rtn. Jörg (left) began by inviting the club members to

his house on Tuesday, 27 August 2013 for some light refreshments and snacks preceding the opening of Casa Santai - Luxury Suites with Pool and Garden. Before introducing the Guest Speaker, Tony Raka, he gave a brief talk about Art and more specifically, ‘What is Contemporary Art?’ Rtn. Jorg explained that there is sometimes a misconception regarding the meaning of Contemporary Art. Contemporary Art is art produced within the artists’ lifetime. It is, per se, not a movement of art. Rtn. Jörg’s professional experience in the art world was

further punctuated by his power point presentation, showing works by Marcel Duchamp (1919) and Picasso (Bull Head) as examples for the antipodes of modern art. An art movement is a tendency or style in art with a specific common philosophy or goal, followed by a group of artists during a restricted period of time. Some examples are:

4

Figurative Art, Abstract Art (Bauhaus, Futurism, Cubism, Constructivism), Conceptual Art (Sol LeWitt) In conceptual art, the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work), Arte Povera (founded by Francesco Clemente - former Biennale Director), Installation Art (Jon Kessler), Performance Art (Yoko Ono, John Cage), Fluxus Art (Joseph Beuys, Wolf Vostell), Pop Art (Andy Warhol, Basquiat), Video Art (Bruce Nauman, Nam June Paik).

In addition, Rtn. Jörg mentioned that following the Asian and African Art trend of recent - Middle Eastern Art is becoming more and more popular. Finally, Rtn. Jörg told the club that he had been a presenter this year at the world-renown Venice Biennale, whereby Indonesia made its first contribution with artists like: Albert Jonathan, Sri Astari, Eko Nugroho, Entang Wiharso, Titarubi and Rahayu Supanggah. After concluding his very informative talk, Rtn. Jörg introduced Tony Raka, from Tony Raka Gallery in Ubud, one of the foremost authorities on Balinese Art today. Tony Raka (below) introduced himself, not as an Art Curator, but as a Gallery Owner promoting good art in Indonesia and Bali. Interestingly enough, most artists in Bali have studied in

Jogjakarta Java, the hub of the Indonesian art culture. Whereby Bali, on the other hand, is known more for it’s dance and music. The Bali Art Society was formed to encourage young artists in Bali to expose the talents of indigenous artists. Tony presented a power point presentation with information regarding four Contemporary (still living) Balinese Artists: Nyoman Erawan (1958), although having studied in Yogya is a good example of a contemporary Balinese Artist. Agung Manga Patra’s art is provocative with a theme of depicting a picture and media message, as exemplified in a painting of a 1965 massacre – ‘Jangan Disentuh.’ Ketut Tejan Astawa is an artist who studied in Bali with strong roots in Bali. His art is very original, i.e. ‘Keep the Holy River,’ which shows how modernization is trying to find a balance in Bali. Made Wigwina Valasara (1983) on the other hand, uses 3-Dimensional Art to convey his ‘no boundaries’ type of art.

In closing, Tony informed the club about an upcoming Balinese Art Exhibition which will be held on Friday, 20 September 2013 in his gallery, which will support the Bali Art Foundation. Upon hearing this announcement, Rtn. Barb suggested that the club consider visiting this Art Exhibition as a Vocational or Cultural Tour.
