His Excellency Dr. K. Rosaiah, the Governor of Tamil Nadu and the Chancellor of the University presided, conferred degrees to 225 candidates including one PG Diploma in person and 51 candidates in absentia and awarded the prizes and medals to the meritorious graduates. Thiru. T.K.M. Chinnayya, Honourable Minister for Animal Husbandry and the Pro-chancellor of the University graced the occasion. Dr. R. Prabakaran, Vice-chancellor, TANUVAS delivered the welcome address. In his welcome address, the Vice-chancellor said that under the dynamic leadership of the Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu the veterinary profession as a whole received the biggest boost in the form of countless initiatives to make the profession’s existence more and more relevant in its service to the poorest of the poor in the state. The Government established two more veterinary colleges in the State, facilitated establishment and re-creation of an “Institute of Poultry Production and Management” and announced establishment of three more Training and Research Centres in Villupuram, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai. In the academic domain, the Vice- chancellor mentioned that a four year B. Tech. (Poultry Production) and PG Diploma courses in the subjects of veterinary orthopaedics, ophthalmology, emergency and critical care medicine, dermatology, livestock feed technology, commercial poultry production and ethno-veterinary medicine, the first of their kind in the country, post-graduate courses in bio-informatics, bio-statistics and food technology and Ph.D., in wildlife science were introduced and two new departments, the Department of Livestock Business Management and the Department of Veterinary Public Health were created at MVC. of Distance Education was created and 18 different skill development programmes were being offered to help school dropouts to become employable in livestock and fishery sectors. The Vice-chancellor mentioned that TANUVAS was awarded with “The Best Performing NAIP Project award” in recognition of the team effort taken in preparing e-lessons for the entire B.V.Sc. & A.H. course. During the current year, MoUs were signed with Ghent University, Belgium, Auburn University, U.S.A., and Agri-Food and Bio-Sciences Institute, Belfast, U.K. released 16 new technologies and obtained 53 research projects with an outlay of Rs. 45.11 cores. He proudly stated that the ICAR conferred the “Sardar Patel Outstanding ICAR Institution Award – 2011” on this University for excellence in Agricultural Research, Education and Extension in the country.

Prof. (Dr.) A.K. Srivastava, Director and Vice-chancellor, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, the Chief Guest, in his convocation address congratulated the graduating students and appreciated the hard work put in by the faculty. He said that despite India holding the number one

position in milk production, the milk productivity remains one of the lowest as compared to the many leading milk producing countries of the world and called to continue well-proven technologies such as crossbreeding with superior germplasm coupled with emerging reproductive and molecular technologies including MOET, sexed semen and cloning for faster multiplication of superior germplasm of elite animals with a focus on increasing productivity rather than animal population. He also stated that there is an urgent need for veterinary doctors to keep pace with the developments in the improvements of the conventional vaccines, profile of newer drugs, newer drug delivery system, diagnostic biomarkers, newer surgical tools and techniques, role of OIE and new

line of treatment and management of infectious and non- infectious diseases that affect productivity of animals.

During the con-vocation “TANUVAS En-dowment for Excellence in Food Engineering” for the best B.Tech.,(FT) student was instituted. Dr. C. Balachandran, Registrar, TANUVAS pre-sented the candidates to the Chancellor for the award of medals and awards. The highlight of the event was the presentation of 27 gold medals to Dr. J.C. Jeba Rose Jennifer for her outstanding academic performance in B.V.Sc. & A.H. course. The other recipients of awards include “Shantha Memorial Prize” for the best book for the years 2011 and 2012 by Dr. D. Thyagarajan, Dean, Faculty of Food Sciences, “Maruthamuthu Mariyayee Memorial Award” for the best teacher in the year 2012 by Dr. V.V. Kulkarni, professor and Head, Department of Meat Science and Technology, VC&RI, Namakkal, “Dr. Vaithilingam Rathnasabapathy Innovation Award” by Dr. G. Sarathchandra, Professor and Head, PLAFFS, “Tamil Peravai Award” for the best book for the years 2011 and 2012 by Dr. S. Ezhilvalavan, Assistant Professor, DDE, Dr. M. Babu, Director, CAPS, Dr. Aranga Mathivanan, Associate Professor, VUTRC, Tiruppur, Dr. T. Senthilkumar, Assistant Professor, Office of the Regiatrar, TANUVAS and Dr. A. Manivannan, Associate Professor, DDE and the best performance in “Horse Riding” in the year 2012 by UO V. Rajaram and Sgt. A. Rajalakshmi of final B.V.Sc. & A.H.

KVK, Kundrakudi participated and arranged a stall displaying farm machineries, TANUVAS Mineral Mixture, value added products and books, booklets and pamphlets in the exhibition during the inauguration of the FTC established under Pandian Grama Bank on 29.07.2012. Thiru. P. Chidambaram, Union Home Minister, Government of India inaugurated the centre. Thiru. Narendran, CMD, IOB and Tmt. Lalitha, CGM, NABARD participated. More than 600 farmers and entrepreneurs visited the stall.

inteRnationaL SYMPoSiUM

An International Symposium on “Evolving role of veterinary students in the advancement of veterinary practice and tertiary clinical care and Fourth National Clinical Case Conference in Farm and Companion Animal Practice” was jointly organized by TANUVAS

and Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine (VMRCVM), USA at MVC on 19.07.2012 and 20.07.2012. A total of 275 students from USA, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and 24 colleges of India participated. Thiru Gagandeep Singh Bedi, I.A.S., Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Government of Tamil Nadu participated in the valedictory function as the Chief Guest and distributed prizes to the winners. Dr. R. Prabakaran, Vice-chancellor, TANUVAS presided. Dr. Nammalwar Sriranganathan, professor, VMRCVM, USA and Dr. P.S. Mohankumar, Professor, Michigan State University, USA felicitated. Earlier, Dr. S. Prathaban, Director of Clinics, TANUVAS welcomed the gathering and Dr. Elankumaran Subbiah, Associate Professor, VMRCVM proposed vote of thanks. Dr. S.S. A national seminar on “Electron Microscopy in Nanotechnology and Biomedical Research” was organized by Centralised Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL), MVC on 24.07.2012 and 24.07.2012. Dr. A.V. Srinivasan, Professor Emeritus, Dr. M.G.R Medical University inaugurated the programme. Dr. R. Prabakaran, Vice-chancellor, TANUVAS presided. Dr. C. Balachandran, Registrar, TANUVAS delivered the special address and Dr. S.A. Asokan, Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences, MVC felicitated. Earlier, Dr. S. Ramesh, Associate Professor and Head, CIL and Organizing Secretary welcomed the gathering and Dr. M. Ananda Chitra, Assistant Professor expressed the vote of thanks. A total of 45 students and 39 faculties attended. In the valedictory function, Dr. D. Jagannathan, I.A.S., Joint Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Chennai participated, delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the participants.

A summer school on “Opportunities in value addition and challenges in quality control of meat products including slaughterhouse by-products”

sponsored by ICAR was organized by the Department of Meat Science and Technology, VC&RI, Namakkal for 21 days from 04.07.2012-24.07.2012. Dr. A.M. Shanmugam, Director of Research (Retd), TANUVAS inaugurated the programme, released the training manual and delivered the inaugural address. Dr. K.A. Doraisamy, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal presided over the function and delivered the presidential address. A total of 18 participants from 7 states participated. Dr. Kusumakar Sharma, ADG (HRD), ICAR , New Delhi, visited VC&RI, Namakkal on 12.07.2012 and interacted with participants & the faculty and released the compendium CD. In the valedictory function, Thiru. R. Karigalan, Chairman, Namakkal Municipality participated, distributed the certificates and delivered the valedictory address. Dr. D. Santhi, Assistant Professor presented the report on the summer school and Dr. V.V. Kulkarni Director, Summer school delivered the vote of thanks.

USDa FUnDeD FooD SYSteMS FeLLoWShiP PRoGRaMMe

The USDA has funded Food Systems Fellowship grant at TANUVAS between 2010-2013 on “Globalization of Food Systems Training Programs for Veterinary Student” with a total funding of USD 149,976 to provide veterinary students interested in a career as a veterinarian in the food animal industry the opportunity to become exposed to the food industry through summer employment with partners such as TANUVAS. The fellowship program, a unique partnership between TANUVAS and College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, USA was organized at TANUVAS for six visiting students of Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, USA for 6 weeks from 05.06.2012 to 17.07.2012. The programme included exposure to rural veterinary health care systems, milk distribution systems, animal health management and diagnostics including economics of diseases,

three projects to appraise the students on rural animal health care practices and diagnostic protocols and visits to various rural settings in Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Dharmapuri and Mudumalai including VUTRCs at Dharmapuri and Thanjavur and PGRIS, Kattupakkam. The Departments of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology, Veterinary Microbiology and Animal Husbandry Statistics and Computer Applications, MVC have coordinated to organize the programme. Dr. B. Murali Manohar, Dean, MVC organized the program and Dr. L. Gunaseelan, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology is the Co principal investigator. On conclusion, Dr. B. Murali Manohar, Dean, MVC distributed certificates. Dr. S. Prathaban, Director of Clinics and Dr. S.A. Asokan, Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences felicitated the students.

The Government of Tamil Nadu allotted an area of 0.63 acres for the proposed VUTRC at Tiruvannamalai. Dr. Pingale Vijay Maruti, I.A.S, District Collector, Tiruvannamalai handed over the enter upon permission letter to Dr. V. Purushothaman, Director, CAHS on 24.07.2012.

WoRLD ZoonoSeS DaY

The World Zoonoses Day was celebrated by the Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology (DVPHE), MVC at Easur village in the outskirts of Chennai to highlight the importance of zoonotic diseases and raise the level of awareness amongst the rural community on 06.07.2012. Pamphlets on zoonotic diseases in Tamil and English were distributed at the doorsteps of the villagers. Platform tests for milk contamination and brucellosis were conducted, animals were dewormed and vaccinated and the farmers were advised about protocols of clean milk production. Dr. L. Gunaseelan, Professor and Head and staff of DVPHE, students of IV B.V.Sc. & A.H. of MVC, 6 students of Michigan State University, USA on a Food System Fellowship along with Dr. P.S. Mohan Kumar, Professor and Scientific Director and NSS co-ordinators, Dr. Kumaravel and Dr. Nisha organised the programme. Thiru. Nandagopal, Village President distributed prizes to the winners of the quiz programme.

ContaCt CLaSS FoR DiStanCe eDUCation CoURSe

The contact class programme for the Certificate course on “Goat Farming” was conducted by the Directorate of Distance Education at Farmer’s Hostel, TANUVAS Headquarters on 19.07.2012 and 20.07.2012. Dr. S.R. Srinivasan, Director of Distance Education, TANUVAS inaugurated the programme. Dr. D. Kathiresan, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS delivered the special address in the inaugural function. In the valedictory function, Dr. S. Hariharan, Assistant General Manager, Aavin and General Manager (i/c), Thiruvallur – Kanchipuram Districts Co-operative Milk Producer’s Federation, delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the participants. A total of 55 candidates attended.

StaKehoLDeRS MeetinG

The fourth meeting for creation of an Industry University Collaborative Research and Innovation Centre (I/UCRIC) at TANUVAS in collaboration with the Virginia Tech- Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Sciences (ICTAS), USA was held at MVC on 09.07.2012. Dr. Roop Mahajan, Director, ICTAS, USA and Dr. S. Elankumaran, Virginia Tech, USA proposed the working model for this centre. After thorough deliberations with TANUVAS faculty, Dr. R.

Prabakaran, Vice-chancellor, TANUVAS has identified four platform technologies such as nanotechnology, vaccine development, drug discovery and delivery and nutrient bioavailability to be worked upon by the centre. The meeting was attended by representatives from 12 industries and 2 educational institutions.

RaDio JoCKeY tRaininG

KVK, Namakkal organized a three days Radio Jockey Training programme for Community Radio Station at KVK, Namakkal from 24.07.2012 to 26.07.2012. The programme was inaugurated on 24.07.2012. Thiru. J. Kumaragurubaran, I.A.S., District Collector, Namakkal presided and Dr. K.A. Doraisamy, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal, Thiru. A. Prabhakaran, Project Director (ATMA) and Joint Director of Agriculture, Dr. R. Shanmugabharathi, Joint Director of Animal Husbandry, Thiru. R. Kathiravan, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Er. C. Ilayappan, Executive Engineer, Department of Agricultural Engineering, Namakkal delivered special addresses. Earlier, Dr. B. Mohan, Programme Coordinator, KVK, Namakkal welcomed the gathering. A total of 56 participants attended.

The Department of Dairy Science, MVC organized a summer training programme on “Quality control processing and value addition” from 14.06.2012 to 29.06.2012. A total of 8 students (including 5 lady students) undergoing M.Tech Food Technology in the Centre for Biotechnology, Anna University participated. In the valedictory function, Dr. B. Murali Manohar, Dean, MVC participated and distributed certificates to the participants. Dr. C. Naresh Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of Dairy Science interacted with students and Dr. B. Dhanalakshmi, Professor, Department of Dairy Science coordinated the training programme.

VC&RI, Namakkal and The India Cements Private Limited, Sankagiri, Namakkal District jointly organized a Veterinary Health Camp at Sankagiri on 13.07.2012. Dr. K.A. Doraisamy, Dean, VC&RI, Namakkal inaugurated the camp. Dr. R. Shanmugabarathi, Joint Director and Dr. K. Prakasam, Assistant Director, Department of Animal Husbandry, Namakkal attended. The staff and students of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Namakkal participated and treated 230 animals for different ailments. Prizes for the best animals were distributed by Thiru. S.K. Palaniyappan, Vice President, The India Cements Private Limited. Dr. K. Balasundaram, Vice President, Students Association, VC&RI, Namakkal organized the camp.

MotivationaL LeCtURe

A motivational lecture for the final year B.V.Sc. and A.H students of Madras Veterinary College on “Industrial expectations from veterinary graduates” was organized by the Department of Livestock Business Management, MVC on 09.07.2012. Dr. T. Gopinath, Associate Manager-HR, Kemin Industries South Asia Pvt. Ltd., Chennai delivered the lecture. About 110 final year B.V.Sc. & A.H. students participated and got benefitted. Dr. T. Sivakumar, Professor and Head and staff of the Department of Livestock Business Management, MVC organized the lecture.

MaSS ContaCt PRoGRaMMe

KVK, Kundrakudi in association with the Department of Animal Husbandry, Sivagangai conducted a mass contact programme and awareness camp

at Azhakumaneri Thirumalai on 16.07.2012. Thiru. V. Rajaram, I.A.S., District Collector, Sivagangai district inaugurated the programme. A total of 302 cattle and 1,130 sheep and goat were dewormed and 785 desi birds were vaccinated.

CoMMUnitY FoDDeR BanK eStaBLiSheD

VUTRC, Karur established Community Fodder Banks under the NABARD sponsored research project on “Economic empowerment and employment of rural women through technology based dairy farming” under Farmers Technology Transfer Fund for Rural Development. Totally 32 acres were converted into fodder banks by motivating the livestock farmers.

teChniCaL Meet

VUTRC, Karur organized a technical meet on “PPR and its effective control” for 40 field veterinarians and 47 LI and AH Assistants under district level ASCAD programme on 13.07.2012. Dr. T.R. Gopalakrishnamoorthy, Associate Professor, PDDSL, Namakkal participated, delivered a lecture and interacted with the participants.

DinaMaLaR aGRi eXhiBition

VUTRC, Vellore participated in the Dinamalar Agri Exhibition organized by the Tamil daily Dinamalar at Vellore from 27.07.2012 to 30.07.2012 and put up a stall with exhibits on various

livestock farming practices and product technologies. Dr. R. Prabakaran, Vice-chancellor, TANUVAS participated in the inaugural function and delivered the special address. In the valedictory function held on 30.07.2012, Thiru Dhamodharan, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Government of Tamil Nadu presided and distributed prizes to the best farmers and farming entrepreneurs and also best stall awards. VUTRC, Vellore was awarded third prize for the best stall award and Dr. C. Theophilus Anand Kumar, Assistant Professor and Head received the prize from the Hon’ble Minister. More than one lakh farmers visited the stall and books, seeds and CDs worth more than Rs. 50,000/- were sold.

Dr. P. Thilakar, Assistant Professor, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and Entrepreneurship, MVC was awarded with Jawaharlal Nehru Award for P.G. outstanding doctoral thesis research in Agricultural and Allied Sciences 2011 by ICAR on 16.07.2012 at New Delhi. He was bestowed in Social Science category for his research work on “A Multidimensional Analysis on Veterinary and Animal Science Education in India”.
