His last album didn’t make a peep 11 years ago, but his second album, White People Party Music, has been making a roar. Nick Cannon’s newest album has started a controversy leading some people to call Nick Cannon, A.K.A. Mr. Mariah Carey, a racist. And it doesn’t help that Cannon dressed in “whiteface” (where a non-white person paints their face white and acts like a stereotyped white person)--a new term that has come out of the controversy to promote the album.

Something to keep in mind when deciding what side of the controversy you are on is that Nick Cannon is a comedian and the album was dropped on April Fools Day. In an interview with Access Hollywood, he said his album was

made for nothing more than pure fun and that there is a difference between being racist and just being humorous. He stated that it is a real album but meant to be a joke.

The music itself is a mix of genres, from EDM to soul to pop-rock. Songs like “Me Sexy” is similar to anything LMFAO has put out, with humorous lyrics like, “S-E-X-Y, we don’t need no alibi. We’re sexy.” White People Party Music features Akon, Pitbull, R. Kelly and Afrojack on tracks and the song “Unbelievable” that was written for his wife Mariah Carey.

After being on a hiatus since 2007, Nickel Creek is returning to the music scene and reviving their collaborative career with their latest album A Dotted Line. The bluegrass trio, comprised of Chris Thile on mandolin, Sara Watkins on fiddle, and Sean Watkins on guitar, is releasing their newest album in correlation with the band’s 25th anniversary.

A Dotted Line contains a cover of Mother Mother’s “Hayloft” and Sam Phillips’ “Where is Love Now” and has a ten-track set list that showcases the instrumentation of the band’s members. Many of the other tracks, including “Elephant in the Corn” and “Destination”, draw from the solo careers each member embarked upon during their hiatus. For fans old and new, A Dotted Line showcases a tenderness and relaxed “feels.” The band is kicking off a tour in April.

Christina Perri recently released her sophomore album Head or Heart. Most people say that surviving the sophomore curse is tough for any new artist; however, Perri’s new album demonstrates that she’s breaking that curse. Head or Heart delivers 48 minutes of true confidence, emotion, and passionate lyrics.

Perri really begins to explore new content and demonstrates outstanding vocal technique. A true downside to Head or Heart is that we’ve heard this sound so many times already, and it just fails to bring anything new to the table.

However, overall the album puts Perri at the top of her mountain, at her best lyrically and vocally.

Country singer-songwriter Kevin Fowler once moved across the country from Amarillo to Los Angeles to pursue his passion for music. After cutting his teeth in L.A., he ended up back in the Lone Star State and started one of the most successful Texas country bands.

At a young age, Fowlder’s mom “insisted he take piano lessons, in spite of his hatred of it and his desire to play football instead.” And it’s a good thing they did. Other artists, such as Montgomery Gentry, Mark Chesnutt, and George Jones, have even appreciated his music enough to record different versions of his songs.

Fowler released his latest album, How Country Are Ya?, earlier this year in March. The album marked Fowler’s seventh studio album and was his first album to be released under Kevin Fowler Records (“a joint venture with Nashville’s Thirty Tigers”). The new album captures Fowler’s colorful life and experiences in various songs (the track “Panhandle Poorboy” is 100% autobiographical, for example). Each track on the album offers a little something different for listeners while still keeping seasoned fans satisfied with Fowler’s signature style.

Beach – N – Bikerfest You know that spring is here when the flowers bloom and all the woodland creatures sew a dress for you to wear to the palace ball – wait a second...let’s get back to reality. Spring is here when the sound of engines reving is so loud that the waves crashing on the beach cannot compete. To put it simply, the annual Beach – N – Bikerfest is happening this weekend and is sure to be a sight to see. The Magic Riders Motorcycle Club Inc. host the three-day event every spring on South Padre Island and it includes everything from a parade to a bike show to Lynyrd Skynrd and Journey tribute bands.

Join the fun at Beach – N – Bikerfest April 11 – 13 at the South Padre Island Convention Center. All the action goes on at Friday 9pm – 12am, Saturday 9am – 1am, and Sunday 9am – 4pm. Ticket prices vary depending on what kind of package you want but run from $10 - $200. For more information and a full list of events and bands check out their website at beachnbikerfest.com.

Friday: Beach – N – Bikerfest starts moving at 10am with Biker Rodeo located in the East Lot followed by Biker Games Practice Sessions. You’ll be able to ride or watch as the bikers get ready for the actual Biker Games on Saturday. If you cannot wait for Saturday, the Dyno Drags is ongoing throughout the day. Riders can show everyone what they are made of by entering the drag race, and trophies are awarded to each division winner. It is sure to be a show whether you’re in the driver seat or watching from the crowd.

Playing on the main stage is an array of classic rock bands and plenty of tribute bands to add to the rocking vibe that is typically associated with a bike rally. The event will host bands such as David Lee Garza, Ram Herrera and Los Gatos Locos.

Saturday: The Bike Show starts at 10am and you can gaze at all the custom bikes that come in from all over the nation. Enter in your own bike, but be sure to register before noon on Saturday for your chance to win the grand prize. At 4pm you will want to head over to Pirates Cove to see the spectacular Biker Parade. It starts at 5pm as hundreds of bikers will ride from Port Isabel over Queen Isabel Causeway to South Padre Island.

Throughout the day there will be tribute bands playing, a Tattoo Contest, Burnout Contest, and more friendly competition to keep your motor running the whole event. When you need a little rest, remember to stop by any of the rally vendors for any Harely-Davidson merchandise, custom bike leather, tattoos, and much more.

Sunday: Sunday consists of Biker Church, Christian Rock, and Kids field events. Bring the whole family for fun events tailored towards children. Don’t worry, the kids will not be riding around on a motorcycle by themselves; but they will complete obstacle courses on a bicycle.

One date, two runs: One run is full of off-roading and obstacles, while the other guarantees you will get very muddy. Be prepared to work out, unleash your inner gladiator, or get covered in mud!

One Army Gladiator Dash is a 2.3-mile off-road, obstacle-filled run. You can dress crazy, wild, or like an actual gladiator--the choice is yours. But one thing is for certain, proceeds from the Gladiator Dash will go to Still Creek Ranch, a refuge for abused and abandoned children. Gladiator Dash is the key philanthropy event of One Army: Texas Aggie Men United, a Texas A&M organization. The members of the organization work hard to put together the Gladiator Dash and make it a resounding success.

One Army Gladiator Dash will be at Lake Bryan on April 12. The cost is $20 per participant online and $25 per participant on the day of the race. Also, carpooling is recommended, as there will be a $2/car parking fee.

Fightin’ Texas Mud Run is sure to get you dirty. The mud run is a 3-mile course that contains more than 15 different obstacles you will encounter on your run. These obstacles include 6 mud or water challenges, the Fightin’ Texas Color Zone, slides, as well as obstacles on dry land and various climbs. Every Fightin’ Mud Run participant will get a shirt, bib, dog tag, and free photos.

At the end of the run, there will be showers (to hose off the mud) and changing tents, as well. As of March 1, registration fees are $85. The Fightin’ Texas Mud Run will go down on April 12 at the Texas World Speedway. The charity benefiting from the mud run is The Museum of the American G.I., a College Station non-profit museum that preserves World War II relics.

MAPS MEASURE - BY KATY DE LUNAGrandpa used to tell us, “I would walk two miles uphill to get to school and back.” But how could Grandpa know for sure if he didn’t have the handy Maps Measure app? Maps Measure uses Google Maps and allows you to measure as many point-to-point distances as you want. The cool thing is that unlike Google Maps alone, you can measure distances of places that don’t have an address. It is a great tool for planning out walks or jogging trails. The Mediterranean Sea lies around the 40-degree latitudinal line in a subtropical climate. The climate is similar to the Northern California region in that they can easily grow grapes, citrus, walnuts, olives and figs. The temperature and natural vegetation heavily impacts the cuisine; in fact, it defines it. To experience these flavors, you don’t have to go to the Mediterranean region, or even North Cali. Instead, you can taste them right here—at the newly opened Arbano Café.

Located at the corner of Holleman and Dartmouth, Arbano’s has a huge footprint in the bottom of the Wolf Pen lofts. Spacious with lots of windows and sunshine streaming in, Arbano’s serves up extremely fresh food with traditional Mediterranean flavors.

Arbano offers a number of traditional Mediterranean sides, and our favorites were the dips. Our favorite side was the babaganoush. Roasted eggplant is pureed into a creamy dip. It had a delightful charred flavor with just a hint of lemon for acidity, and it also managed to maintain a few small chunks of eggplant, which were a welcome surprise. Their hummus is creamy and thicker than a store-bought hummus. The citrus influence from the Mediterranean region is seen throughout this recipe, evident by the nice lemony bite that gives it a clean finish. Topped with a healthy dose of olive oil, the hummus was the perfect compliment to the pitas and pita chips.

Arbano serves chicken and beef shawarma. Shawarma is made by stacking chicken breasts or cuts of beef on a vertical spit. We were told that sometimes they even include peppers or onions in between the pieces of meat for additional flavor. These stacks of meat rotate and cook for hours, but when ready, are sliced to order, vertically, so they fall off in chunks, ready to be assembled in a pita. Tender and juicy, the chicken marinade shines through and produces a well-balanced flavor. The beef had a different flavor profile, so it was nice to see two different marinades utilized (at least we think) for the different types of meat. The beef had a tangier taste, as if it might have been marinated in a red wine vinegar or something similarly tasty.

The lamb is to die for. Ground lamb is mixed with spices and then assembled in loaf form and placed on the same vertical spit. Shaved off as thinly as possible, the lamb has a magical crisp crust on the borders from being constantly rotated on the vertical spit. The tzatiki style sauce, which was served with our meat, had large chunks of cucumbers in yogurt that was a welcome compliment for the beef and lamb we had. Eaten with warm

pita bread and either tzatiki, hummus, or babaganoush (we definitely tried all three combinations), it was truly great.

One item we were not familiar with was the manakish. Manakish was traditionally made as a way to utilize extra dough from daily bread baking. Topped with either cheese or meat, Arbano also offers a stuffed manakish with fresh spinach, herbs, and just a hint of feta. Instead of traditional chewy bread dough, this manakish was wrapped in light, flaky layers of pastry. Arbano’s offers it as a side, but we felt that we could have eaten two as a main dish and been completely satisfied.

If you’ve never experienced Mediterranean cuisine, we recommend trying the tri-plate with a sampling of all their meat offerings and two sides. It’s the perfect way to taste your way around the menu. And don’t forget dessert. Arbano’s has a large display with various dessert packaged together. None are labeled, so it’s like a dessert lottery. Our tip: Look for one with baklava and a round cookie wrapped in paper. It’s the best version of a Fig Newton you’ll ever eat!

A couple of weeks ago on March 23rd, a barge and tanker collided in the Houston Ship Channel resulting in an oil spill. The barge, which was carrying a total of 924,000 gallons of fuel oil, unleashed about a fifth of its cargo into the unsuspecting waters. While the full effects of the incident won’t be fully determined for weeks, if not months, efforts are already underway to control, minimize, and repair damages.

Joining this cause, scientists from Texas A&M Galveston as well as the main TAMU campus are offering their expertise. From studying the harm already done to examining winds and currents to trying to predict where the oil slick will travel, researchers will be working to alleviate the spill’s effects for quite some time.

Dr. Antonietta Quigg, a marine biologist and Galveston Bay ecosystem expert, and her team have been examining water and sediment samples to get a grasp for the damage done to the ecosystem. Fellow marine biologist and marine mammal expert, Dr. Bernd Würsig, noted that dolphins in the spill zone actually left the area for four days. The sea mammals little vacation did not come as a surprise. That being said, Würsig fears some of the dolphins may be returning a little too early. He says the dolphins “are very smart and know to stay out of an oil slick; however, this kind of oil forms globs that dolphins do not often see and can pose a danger to them”.

Dr. Tom Litton is tracking currents based on NASA satellite imagery, and is concerned the oil is moving towards fragile wildlife sanctuaries. Teams are being placed in the concerned areas in order to provide assistance to animals and to help keep the beaches clean.

In addition to aiding with research efforts, Texas A&M has also provided aid by way of veterinary assistance in the form of Dr. Jill Heatley, a member of the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She along with many others are working hard to remove oil from effected birds and marine animals, which she says is a “time-consuming process but it is absolutely necessary”.

Hopefully, with combined efforts on all fronts, researchers, vets, and other specialists aiding in the spill will be able to contain the damage.

Love Letters To The Dead is too beautiful, too meaningful, and too heartbreaking to describe with words. At times, it’s young, shy, poetic. Other times, there’s so much pathos it’s overwhelming. Love Letters is about letting go and finding yourself. Laurel, the story’s narrator, is affected by her sister’s death, mainly because she feels guilty and also because nobody talks about what happened. Her mother chooses to run away while her dad is always watching baseball games or focusing on work. The thing is, she doesn’t think it’s okay to talk about it with anyone either. So, she doesn’t.

Love Letters To The Dead is a story with a beating heart, beautifully crafted, bittersweet, and poignant, about finding the strength to carry on and finding the person you need to be when challenges strike.

Tempting Fate is the story of Gaby Cartwright, a middle-age housewife and mother.

When a mild flirtation over a drink with someone who is not her husband spirals into an obsession, it tears her world apart.

Tempting Fate is an intelligent, thought-provoking, true-to-life book.

While reading it, you’ll course through a range of feelings, from anger to disgust, sadness to happiness.

It’s one of those novels that you even want to physically start yelling at, hoping in vain that you can get through to the characters and stop them from making such a mess of their lives.

“Duck Dynasty” is the most popular reality series on television. And now, the wives of the show’s stars have penned a book entitled The Women of Duck Commander. The book is an honest tell-all about their lives, trials, and triumphs, and it contains not only quirky and fun stories but encouraging ones as well.

“Miss Kay” pens a truthful story that delves into her relationship with Phil, the head of the family, chronicling his rowdy years. It also delves into the obstacles she’s faced as a teenage mother. She talks about their journey with the condition and how Mia’s positivity and happiness was an inspiration to the family. Jessica depicts her first conversation with Jep, who boasted about his Duck Commander father, whom Jessica had never heard of. Offshore drilling is, to say the least, a hot topic of debate among policy makers and environmentalists alike. Though some argue that serious harm is done to the environment as a result of offshore drilling (see the BP oil spill in 2010), others advocate for its environmental friendliness. According to Ben Lieberman (senior policy analyst at The Heritage Foundation), “Most oil spills are not due to drilling but from natural seepage from the sea floor, and studies have shown that oil drilling reduces the pressure on those seeps and results in less oil pollution.” Though opinions on the topic vary, offshore drilling is an influential and lucrative industry that deserves our attention.

George Bush, an avid supporter of Texas A&M, was a prosperous and innovative Texas oilman. To pay tribute to him and his contribution to the development of offshore drilling, Texas A&M is hosting an exhibit called Offshore Drilling: The Promise of Discovery. The exhibit will focus on the history of offshore drilling, how it has grown and developed thus far, and what lies ahead for the industry. It will also feature new technologies and research currently being conducted at Texas A&M.

One thing you won’t be at the exhibit is bored. There will be lots of opportunities to learn more about the industry while you’re there. The search for oil offshore, the geology of finding oil, and the exploration of the Gulf of Mexico will all be exhibited. Interactive media such as videos on display will allow visitors to hear industry pioneers relate their experiences in the field, including personal accounts of life on a rig. There will be models of various rigs, platforms, supply vessels, and pieces of drilling equipment on display. Other exhibits featuring Smart Gulf and Scientific Research from Texas A&M will also be showcased.

The exhibit will be on display at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M from March 31-February 1.

Offshore Drilling: The Promise of DiscoveryBy Kelly Porter


Remember when you were young and would pretend to be an undercover spy, protecting the United States from the sudden doom of an enemy force? Now that you are grown up, Texas A&M Gents are holding an event called Spy Games: The Art of Counterintelligence with two men who you used to pretend to be: former CIA agent James Olson and former FBI agent Michael J. Waguespack. Not only do you get the rare chance to listen to the experiences of these former agents but all proceeds of Spy Games are split evenly between the CIA Memorial Fund and the Wounded Warriors Project.

Some may know James Olson as an intelligence, national security, and international crisis management professor here at A&M, but he has a decorated past as a Chief of Counterintelligence at CIA headquarters. Olson served 25 years in the CIA, mostly in covert operations, and has been awarded the Intelligence Medal of Merit, the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the Donovan Award, and several other Distinguished Service Citations.

Michael J. Waguespack’s career is an interesting one, as well. As a senior counterintelligence executive in the FBI, Waguespack was the Director of Counterintelligence, Intelligence and Security Programs at the National Security Council at the White House. He also was the first Director of the National Counterintelligence Center, among others.

You will be able to listen to Olson and Waguespack speak about their unique lives at Rudder Auditorium Monday April 14, from 6-7:30pm. Tickets are $5 and are available in Rudder Box Office.

Langford Architecture Center Building BFree Event, Reception to FollowThe Art Guys, Michael Galbreth and Jack Massing, started their collaboration of working together

while attending the University of Houston in 1983. They use a “direct-to-the-public” approach and have presented their handiwork in various public places, such as movie theaters and restaurants.

The Art Guys “experiment with a range of materials and activities in their attempt to expand the dialog and boundaries of art”. These various activities include drawing, sculpting, performing, and using unusual objects such as pencils, food, and toothbrushes. Their methods employ humor and unconventional objects to convey art and invite a wide range of audiences into the conversation and community of contemporary art.

The Art Guys’ work has been featured in over 150 museums, galleries, and exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Their work has been featured in Houston's Contemporary Arts Museum, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and Tacoma Art Museum, as well as countless others. The Art Guys have addressed audiences in more than 60 universities throughout the U.S.

The Art Guys are bringing their lecture, “Twice and For All”, to Texas A&M’s campus on April 14. The lecture will be held in Geren Auditorium in the Langford Architecture Center Building at 4pm. A reception will follow the lecture.

Marvel has done it again. Capitalizing on the public’s obsession with superheroes and extremely fit men, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier gives the people want they want with numerous shots of Chris Evan’s veiny biceps in his return as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America. The Winter Soldier is the franchise’s latest installment associated with the Avengers, but this movie isn’t the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger; instead, you’ll have needed to watch The Avengers to understand some of the events referenced in this film.

In The Winter Soldier, directed by Russo brothers Anthony and Joe, Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier is like a ghost but packs one heck of a punch, and when his identity is revealed, he becomes Rogers’ most difficult enemy to defeat.

Not only does the Winter Soldier serve as a thorn in Captain America’s side, but his WWII enemy Hydra is back, forcing Captain America, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and new hero Falcon (Anthony Mackie) to confront the government program Project Insight, headed by Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford). Because of undercover Hydra agents within SHIELD, three Helircarriers (automated killing drones) threaten national and global security as Hydra plans to kill over 20 million people. Does that sound a little familiar? It’s supposed to. The Russo Brothers were given instructions by Marvel to create a political thriller, and they decided to use President Obama’s controversial “terror-kill” list as their inspiration.

In one notable shot, Pierce is heard off-screen saying, “The public is ready to trade in their freedom for their safety,” a clever response to Benjamin Franklin’s famous quote, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Though the film’s controversial scenes were created prior to the NSA revelations, the directors say it’s no accident that data mining is a key element of the plot. The Winter Soldier has a heavy note, being much more politically charged than some of the other movies in the franchise (Thor). But there are still plenty of moments of comedic relief in several scenes of witty banter and in Stan Lee’s cameo appearance. This film will be a constituent in the Avengers series, as Captain America returns in the 2015 movie, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Captain America: The Winter SoldierAction (PG-13)

Homework is never ending. Professors seem to collaborate and schedule tests at the same time and college… gets in the way of college. What better way to procrastinate than Netflix? Which is why Maroon Weekly is bringing you Netflix News and Reviews for those nights when you realize that you’ve already finished all of the decent televisions shows that Netflix has to offer and you need something to help you avoid that term paper. You work better under stress anyway, right?

If you want a new film to watch that’s a bit higher quality that Sharknado, Stuck in Love is a great place to start. Starring Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine, Heaven is For Real), Jennifer Connelly (Noah), Lily Collins (The Blind Side), Nat Wolff (Palo Alto, The Fault in Our Stars), and Logan Lerman (Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah), the independent film was written and directed by Josh Boone, the same guy who’s bringing the best-selling Josh Green novel, The Fault in Our Stars, to the big screen.

“Dysfunctional family” is an accurate description for the Borgens family. Father William “Bill” Borgens (Kinnear) is a divorcee and acclaimed novelist whose run up against some serious writer’s block since his divorce. His ex-wife, Erica (Jennifer Connelly), has since remarried, and William goes out of his way to “check in” (in other words, be a peeping Tom). Trying to fill the emotional void left by his ex-wife, William has occasional rendezvous with his very married neighbor, Tricia (Kristen Bell), who in a bizarre twist, also serves as a sort of relationship counselor.

Bill’s a single parent to teenagers Samantha (Lily Collins) and Rusty (Nat Wolff), who are aspiring writers themselves. Samantha is publishing her first novel and determined to avoid love at all costs – after seeing it destroy her parents. In between callous hook-ups, she meets “nice guy” Lou (Logan Lerman) whose persistence eventually wins her over. Rusty is a writer and obsessed with Stephen King on a quest to gain “life experiences.” He falls for the beautiful, but troubled, Kate (Liana Liberato) and gets his first taste of love and a broken heart.

This film doesn’t show a perfect family with the veritable white picket fence; Boone shares a story about love in a less-than-fairy tale format. The movie’s tagline is “There are no rewrites in life, only second chances,” and the film’s ending leaves you on an encouraging note: Life may not be perfect, but family will find their way home.
