The GST will be applicable on food and beverage items in train not at the concessional rate of 5% as specifi ed by

the government through a circular, Authority for Advance Rulings (AAR).

Outdoor catering attracts 18% GST, while canteen services faces 5%. The levy on supply of food or beverages by facilities such as a mess or canteen was reduced to 5% in November. Subsequently, in January supplies made to Indian Railways were also put in the 5% bracket via a circular.

The AAR ruling came in response to an application by Deepak & Co that entered into an agreement with the Indian Railways for supply of food and beverages (packaged, cooked or at MRP) on mail and express trains.

Scientists Develop Test to Safely andAccurately Diagnose Peanut Allergies

Smart Water Me-ters to Harness the Power of Internet of Things (IoT)

Five to eight per cent of UK children have a food allergy with up to one in 55 children having a peanut allergy,

according to Food Standards Agency Medical Research Council scientists

have developed a new laboratory test to diagnose peanut allergy. The test has 98 per cent specifi city and, unlike current op-tions, it doesn’t run the risk of false-posi-tives or causing allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock.

The simple blood test is fi ve times more cost-effi cient compared to the oral food challenge (OFC) – the standard food al-lergy test – and could be adapted to test for other food allergies.

The new test, called the mast activa-tion test (MAT), could act as a second line tool when skin-prick test results are inconclusive and before referring children and their families to specialists for an OFC, according to researchers from the MRC & Asthma UK Centre in Allergic Mechanisms of Asthma. Their new study was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Im-munologyopens in new window.

The New PCE-ISFET Ph Meter for Food Applications

New ISFET pH meter from PCE Instruments (PCE-ISFET) has been

designed for food applica-tions. The glass free electrode makes it particularly safe to use in food production as no glass splinters can get into the food if the electrode breaks. Unlike glass pH elec-trodes, ISFET pH sensors are highly resilient and do not re-quire wet storage.

They give reliable results

under tough conditions. The PCE-ISFET pH tester’s highly sensitive electronics can achieve a resolution and ac-curacy of 0.005 pH, at a meas-urement range of 0.00 16.00 pH. The PCE-ISFET pH meters can also be used to check per-manently installed pH meters often used in food production.

Smart meters’ ability to re-duce non-revenue water losses and improve bill-

ing accuracy attracts invest-ments, fi nds Frost & Sullivan.

Water-stressed countries are leading the shift from tra-ditional water meters to smart water meters, even as govern-ments all over the world alter policies to enhance the effec-tiveness of their water net-works and manage consump-tion levels. Smart water meter installations are expected to grow from 13.8 million units in 2017 to 82.1 million units by 2026; China is the fastest growing market due to its rapid urbanisation, smart city development, and favorable policies. This market demand has opened up growth oppor-

tunities for Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled smart meters, which, in turn, has energized an entire ecosystem of meter-ing infrastructure.

The communication mod-ule of smart water metershas undergone rapid tech-nological transformations. There is a steady rise in the demand for IoT-enabled advanced metering infra-structure (AMI) smart water meters due to their multiple capabilities of real-time visu-alisation, leak detection, and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications,” said Paul Hudson, SeniorResearch Ana-lyst, Energy & Environment, Frost & Sullivan.

readable. The pH value is dis-played in a large font and is continuously displayed during menu operation. The intuitive and user-friendly interface available in multiple languag-es allows quick access to the meter’s advanced features and settings. Large ergonomic keys make it easy to navigate through the menu and to se-lect options.

The intelligent calibration wizard simplifi es the calibra-tion process, reducing calibra-tion time and error suscepti-bility.

The measured data (up to 65,000 measured values) as well as calibration reports can be saved and transferred to a computer via USB. The software is included in the standard package. However, the probes must be ordered separately.
