Why deploy VoIP?

Many businesses are choosing IP telephony, often referred to as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) as an alternative to traditional ISDN telephony which is inflexible and can be very expensive. With VoIP technology calls are often made over the Internet meaning that your telephony can operate from anywhere with an internet connection.

The main benefits to a VoIP system are; your telephony will be far more resilient due to instantaneous call forwarding and superior disaster recovery, business telephone numbers can be moved freely around geographic locations and can even be represented in multiple sites. In addition to this, VoIP does not rely on expensive lines and large networks so can result in significant savings on both fixed costs as well as ongoing call traffic costs.

3 Facts About IP Telephony

It is easy to see why VoIP is a very attractive proposition to the businesses who are adopting it. DTE, like all responsible network providers will ensure that your IP-PBX has been secured against unauthorised access, but what many other telecoms companies are still not making clear are the implications of sending sensitive call information across the Internet. Here are some facts to be aware of when choosing a telecoms provider:

•When your voice traffic is transmitted over a public network such as the Internet it will be unencrypted unless extra security measures are taken.

•VoIP should not be used as a method of transmitting cardholder data unless secured using strong encryption, as mandated by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards.

• Telecommunications fraud can be very profitable for a hacker and eavesdropping has become easier because of readily available hacking tools. Unencrypted telecommunications networks are vulnerable to malicious attacks from high level organised outfits or from small-time hackers looking for quick financial gain.

Are You Secure Enough?

Here are some questions that you should ask your Telecoms provider regarding VoIP:

• Can the Service Provider demonstrate strong encryption for your voice traffic when using a public network?

• How secure is the connection from your site into your Service Provider’s network?

• If you take credit card information over the phone, can your Service Provider provide you with a certificate of compliance with Payment Card Industry Standards?

How Do I Secure My Calls?

If you discover that you do have confidential information travelling on your IP network, but lack the security required the next steps are to find the right solution.

We recommend the SIP Encrypt service to any organisation who deals with confidential or sensitive information over the telephone. This includes but is not limited to any Enterprise organisation, Businesses operating in manufacturing, Healthcare or other services handling sensitive personal information, the Financial Sector, Contact Centres and Retail. Any business taking card payments over the phone where card data is handled must comply with PCIDSS requirements and calls must be secured.
