Vol. Friday, April 12,1996 50 Cents i voices ncan singers have a message of hope for a troubled country By Richard Shea Packet Group It started out as a dream. He would be singing alone at first, then, suddenly, a group of people would appear. Soon, they were all singing the same song, his song, and the har- mony was perfect. When he woke up, he'd be in tears, it was so beautiful. And he'd also be alone. That was back in the 1950s, when Joseph Shabalala, of South Africa, was working in a factory during the day and singing with traditional folk groups at night. But he wanted his own group, one that would under- stand and give life to the music only he heard, in his dreams at night. "Then, one day, God sent me sol- diers of music, powerful voices," Mr. Shabalala recalled. Over 30 years later, there's no ar- guing with Mr. Shabalala. He's the leader of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a 10-member, song-and-dance group renowned for its work with Paul Si- mon on his masterpiece Graceland, which was released in 1986. Since then, the group has won a Grammy, toured the world three times and per- formed in a Tony-nominated play, The Song of Jacob Zulu (1993). Ladysmith Black Mambazo will return to the stage when Nomathem- ba, a play written by Mr. Shabalala, playwright Ntozake Shange and "di- rector Eric Simonson, is staged at the State Theatre in New Brunswick April 13-14. The show will be pres- ented by the Crossroads Theatre Company and move on to the Kenne- dy Center for Performing Arts in Washington. D.C., April 17 through May 19. For Mr. Shabalala, Nomathemba, which is based on the first song he ever wrote, back in 1965, is another dream come true. "I said to (the director) I have a dream for a long time — how can I make (the song) into a play, the story of this song," Mr. Shabalala recalled. "Because, to me, I'm talking to my people to not give up the hope." Back in 1965, South Africa was not the most hospitable of countries if you were black. And because the music Mr. Shabalala and his col- leagues were performing is rooted in indigenous tradition, it was frowned upon by the then all-white govern- ment. "Nomathemba" is a song about a woman who decides to leave her ru- ral hometown and try to make some- thing of herself in the city. Her name, and the songs title, means, "hope." And, indeed, the ending of the song, and the play, is hopeful. But not for reasons one might assume. Noma- themba has left her home because she's tired of blindly following tradi- tion, which includes an arranged- marriage situation of sorts. So, she leaves thinking the man she's en- gaged to, Bongani, isn't truly in love with her. What she doesn't realize is, he's following her, from city to city, never quite catching up. When they do catch up with each other, it's back in their hometown of Ladysmith, a place they've returned to after months of straggle elsewhere. "It's about peace," Mr. Shabalala said of the play. "It's about reconcili- ation. It's about forgive each other. It's about not give up the hope." It's easy to see how Nomathemba applies to, as it's referred to in the play, "the new South Africa." With apartheid abolished, and Nelson Mandela in the presidency, opportu- nities for black. South Africans abound. But that's not to say things are easy. The country's economy is need or stabilizatibnrand blacks and whites are still readjusting to the new- order. In Nomathemba, Bongani is a traditionalist, his fiancee an oppor- tunist. What both eventually learn is you can't be one or the other; com- promises must be made. And, wher- ever, you end up, home or abroad, you musn't forget where you came from. Mr. Shabalala explained. "I'm saying to my people, 'Don't give up, because this is your place, mis is your country. ... You can grow up in your father's home, but your fa- ther, your mother, they're always praying for you to have your home. Now your home is to have a girl who's going to love you, and marry her.' " Mr. Shabalala wants to clear up a misunderstanding. The style of music he and Ladysmith Black Mambazo are known for was not invented 30 or •••• 1 ; •", '• V. " " -- .-:--"- '..*•. - . y . • " . r . .•-•"••• . . • - •• -- •-• '.. " ' _ -' I.•£>._. V "" " Joseph Shabalala, far left, and his group, the 10-member Ladysmith Black Mambazo. 40 years ago. It's actually an amal- gam of styles developed by various South African tribes through the cen- turies. Decades ago, however, when black workers were bussed to work camps, where they'd live away from their families for months at a time, they brought their music with them. On Saturday nights, they'd sing to each other, and, out of necessity, they developed a dancing style that wouldn't wake the security guards. Where once they stomped the floor, now they tip-toed. By the 1960s, this singing-and- danciiig scyit tSi^pirioriiianc^ HSG be- come so popular, competitions were held on a regular basis. And Mr. Sha- balala's "dream" group, which he formed in 1964 and included three brothers and two cousins, was one of the best. In fact, the group's name re- flects its authority. Ladysmith is the Shabalalas hometown, "black" refers to the black oxen, the strongest ani- mals on the farm, and "mambazo," in Zulu, means "ax," as in the group's ability to hack the competition to pieces. Hence Mr. Shabalala's soliders of music, whose combination of Zulu and English lyrics, sung in an rhyth- mic, choral fashion attracted Mr. Si- mon back in the 1980s. At the time, a cultural boycott was the order of the day, and even some of Mr. Shabala- la's friends suspected the popular American artist of exploitation. But Mr. Shabalala, knowing Mr. Simon's background and trusting his sincere- ly, saw an opportunity. He told the skeptics that, by associating them- selves with Mr. Simon, "People will know who you are." And he was right. "The white people in South Afri- ca — they started to respect our mu- sic," he said. "All along in South Af- rica, before Paul Simon, we were very popular to our people. Before we joined Paul Simon, we recorded 25 albums, but it was popular only to our black people. White people? Some of them. ... Paul Simon opened the gate for white people; they started tdsuppdrtus.' Didn't you give him a new name? "Yes, I gave him a Zulu name — Vulindela (pronounced Voo-lee-del- AY), which means 'open the gate.' " And what was his reaction? "He was very happy. First of all, when I gave him this name, he said, 'Joseph, I'm going to have to change my passport.' Heh-heh-heh-heh" His laugh, like everything else about him, is musical. So it's fitting that the role Mr. Shabalala and Lady- smith Black Mambazo play in Noma- themba is that of a kind of Greek mu- sical chorus. They sing and dance during the wedding scenes, but they also accompany Bongani during his journey, at times encouraging him to bring her back home,. other times singing lyrics that reflect the thoughts of most of the black South Africans in the play: that this is a time of anxi- ety, but also of great hope. And, at the root of that hope, is sense of who you are, according to Mr. Shabalala. He said that the dream he had as a young man was a dream of individuality, a dream of finding his own voice. And while working with Mr. Simon, he asked him what he found so intriguing in Ladysmith Black Mambazo's music. Was it the African music itself? "No," he said. "You are the king. You have your own thing." Sharing your own thing with the world is not easy, however. Even when you consider some of today's most popelar American pop; Angers, like Bruce Springsteen and REM, you realize it took years — and at least a couple- unpopular albums be- fore they caught on. Mr. Shabalala has a theory. "It's just like when you cook something — you're going to discov- er and taste the food and say, 'Hmmm, too much salt; I'm going to cook later.' But, one day, you taste it and say, 'This one, this one every- one's going to enjoy.' " It's a measure of Mr. Shabalala's success, and his stature in the "new" South Africa that he's at the forefront of a movement to establish an acade- my in South Africa that will teach fu- ture generations about indigenous cultures. "We must make sure that our mu- sic is not harmed," he said, "because, all along, all the universities, the schools — it's Eurocentric." With freedom, of course, comes a price, and sometimes the price is the sacrifice of tradition to make way for change. That's too much of a price to pray, Mr. Shabalala believes, and his academy and projects like Noma- themba are ways to apply tradition to today. And if anyone can appreciate to- day, it's Mr. Shabalala, whose group accompanied Nelson Mandela and former South African president F.W. deClerck to Norway in 1993 where the two leaders were given the Nobel Peach Prize. They also performed at Mr. Nelsop's inauguration in 1994. "Evenln South Africa, people tell you this is the 'new' South Africa," Mr. Shabalala said: "Now, when we're talking about the new South Africa, we're thinking about we used to say 'old' South Africa that was owned by white people. ... "If you can go to the Parliament now, you can discover that black, white, Indian and colored — some- thing new. It's something new to see black and white, Indian and colored work together. "This is amazing. This is wonder- ful." @ Nomathemba will be staged at the State Theatre, 15 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, April 13-14. Show- times: 3 p.m. and 8p.m., Sat; 3 p.m., Sun. on the jaw" in accidents and falls.Every time we speak, breathe or

chew, the joint's internal works mustcoordinate to move the jaw up anddown, or from side to side. The smallTMJ muscles also bear the brunt oftension for people who clench theirjaw or grind their teeth in response tostress. With all these common activi-ties centering on one diminutivejoint, it is no wonder that many peo-ple report symptoms of TMD or tem-poromandibular disorder at somepoint in their lives.

TMJ disorders are of two typesthat are treated quite differently. They may occur independently or co-exist, depending on the individual.

The first area of TMD is causedby the chewing muscles of the joint, which interconnect with other mus-cles of the face and head, leading tomyofascial pain disorder, known asMPD. The second class of problemsoccurs in the bones and disk thatmake up the internal workings of thejoint itself.

Trauma to the jaw causes prob-lems in equal numbers of male andfemale patients, but for reasons thatare still unclear, 80 percent of thosewho suffer from TMD are women, ranging in age from teens to the eld-erly. Why women suffer more fromTMD may be explained by the struc-tural, behavioral or clinical differ-ences.

Typically, the first sign of the dis-order is a popping or clicking sensa-tion in the joint, or the jaw may lockin an open or shut position. Manyother people with TMD, however, suffer with painful symptoms thatseem unrelated to the jaw. They

might feel pain radiating forwardfrom the ear, or have disabling head-aches behind the eyes, in the temples, the back of the head or even theshoulders and neck.

Some TMD sufferers enduresleepless nights, while those whoclench or grind their jaws in theirsleep may wake up with pain that dis-appears later in the day. Lifestylemay also create cyclical TMD. As thesemester ends, some deadline-plagued students clench their jawsunconsciously for hours or days onend, with painful TMD symptoms asa consequence.

The disorder may disappear on itsown, when the body adapts or whenmedication and rest reduce the in-flammation, allowing the body toheal itself. But the condition mayalso get worse when a symptom suchas headache is treated in isolation, while the underlying joint disorderremains undiagnosed.

Fortunately, many forms of treat-ment are available to treat TMD,some of them extremely simple.Even patients who have had thesymptoms for a long time are fre-quently able to return to a normallifestyle quickly once the condition isdiagnosed and treatment started.

At the first visit, the TMD spe-cialist asks the patient to fill out aquestionnaire to elicit the cause ofthe problem and determine the courseof treatment A physical exam willfollow, usually supplemented by X-rays or MRI tests. If the problem ismuscular, the course of treatmentstarts—and may well end—with asoft food diet and anti-inflammatorydrugs, such as ibuprofen.

Physical therapy is also very ef-fective for TMD and may help avoidsurgery. Ultrasound, cold spray andstretching may be used along withspecial exercises to increase or main-tain range of motion in the joint.

Adjacent muscles of the neck andshoulders may need therapy, too,, totreat pain stiffness or immobility. The physician may prescribe an oralappliance to take stress off the TMJas a crutch might support and rest asore knee. Trigger-point anestheticinjections, at the point where musclemeets bones, can also help by givingthe patient relief while the normalhealing process takes over.

The TMD sufferer with problemsin the internal workings of the joint islikely to start out using these conser-vative, non-surgical methods. Theymay restore normal function, leavingthe patient feeling good enough toend treatment while accepting certainlifestyle limitations—no morecrunchy bagels or contact sports, forinstance.

If the pain continues, the problemmay be a displaced articular disk inthe joint, either as a result of stress ortrauma. The patient then turns to anoral and maxillofacial surgeon, whoevaluates the benefits of differentsurgical procedures, the simplest ofwhich is arthrocentesis— joint lava-ge, or cleansing— that reduces in-flammation and may preclude theneed for further treatment.

Other surgical methods includeTMJ arthroscopy, which has becomeeven more effective with the additionof a \aser.Healih Matters is contrib-uted by The Medical Center atPrinceton.

Attracting birds to the backyard isa matter of knowina their habits

' . By Robert GluckSpecial Writer

Even before Orville and WilburWright translated their skills with bi-

• cycles into creating a flying machine,• people have yearned to fly. Man has

always viewed flying as free and ef-fortless, and throughout the ages peo-ple have consequently been fascinat-ed with birds.

Soaring eagles over the DelawareWater Gap, blue herons spearing fishin a local farmer's pond, woodpeck-ers drumming on a nearby tree, egretsenhancing the sandy landscape at theJersey shore — these are memories

, etched in our minds. If you're an amateur birder, or a

proven ornithologist, you'll want tolearn as much as you can about at-tracting birds to your property or liv-ing area. After all, a daily glimpse ata towhee. blue jay, woodpecker,

• morning dove or yellow rumped war-bler provides us with a taste of flightand freedom, and that's good for thepsyche.

How can we attract birds to ourbackyards? Are there specific plants, feeders, and birdhouses that willdraw them? To find out, we searchedfor answers from environmentalistsand landscapers, professionals whoknow birds, and know how to attractthem.

According to Jim Sharp, a nurs-eryman at Peterson's Nursery (onRoute 206 between Princeton andLawrenceville), any small shrubswith berries will attract birds.

"We have many small shrubsavailable at Peterson's," he said."Birds especially like the hollies andfruit trees like cherry and crab apples. We carry 50 different crab apple va-rieties. You always want to have wa-ter around too. Get a birdbath, build apond or install a fountain. And don'tforget protection. Plant any tree thatoffers protection from other preda-tors. These trees are needed also forthe bird's nesting sites."

Known as the "creative garden-ers," Peterson's carries quality plant-ing supplies, a complete line of state-ly fountains, decorative lawn statues,

tools and fertilizers. There also is acountry gift shop on the premiseswhere handmade wreaths, basketsand cabinets are sold.

Ken Field is another local expert.A landscape architect with Kale'sNursery and Landscape Service, aLawrence firm that specializes in un-usual trees and shrubs, Mr. Field ad-mits there are many different kinds ofshrubs and trees that will attractbirds.

"I recommend the American hol-lies to attract birds because they havea berry on them that birds eat in thefall and winter," Mr. Field said."And, these hollies are good for ourarea because the deer don't like them. You always have to be concernedaround here about deer. Of course, the tree or shrub should provide goodcover for the birds."

Mr. Field said Kale's offers shop-pers a variety of birdfeeders andbaths. "It's important to have a birdbath feature in your garden," he says."This lets the birds who love watercool off in the hotter months. Whenit's hot and dry, it's hard for birds tofind water. We carry many feedersfrom the fancy to the ornamental. Most of our bird baths are ceramic."

Environmentalist, artist and natu-ralist Roger Tory Peterson (no rela-tion to the proprietors of Peterson'sNursery) is one of the world's fore-most experts on birds. Originator ofthe field guide concept — which hasbecome the standard in bird study formore than 50 years — Mr. Petersonexplained the answers to the abovequestions about birds in the NatureScience Network's video "AttractingBirds to Your Backyard."

"Your have to remember threethings," Mr. Peterson said on the vid-eo. "Water, safety and food. And wecan provide these three things in asincere effort to keep birds as perma-nent friends. To do this you have toassess what the birds like. If you seebuntings and chickadees and gros-beaks, birds with conical bills that eatseeds,- start out by putting out somesunflower seeds in feeders and on theground."

According to Mr. Peterson's vid-

eo, smaller birds need smaller seedsand some birds won't come to yourfeeder. It's good to spread grain andseeds on the ground so the sparrowsand towhees and morning doves caneat as well. 'To reduce competitionuse different feeders," he advised. "Ifyou go away for a few days or if youcan't keep replenishing the seed use afeeder that stores seed. Another goodidea is if you see birds that eat in-sects, offer a substitute like suetmixed with peanut butter. Smear thison trees or drill holes in branches orsticks, and fill the holes with thiscombination. This will attract birdslike the yellow rumped warbler. Tryfresh fruit like a cut orange to attractwoodpeckers and orioles."

You must put your feeders farfrom where any cats can get to them.Again, environmentalists like Mr. Pe-terson recommend shrub cover forsafety, especially hollies like nandinaand fatinia. "Dogwoods, blueberries,

raspberries, grapes, these all providegood cover and food," Mr. Petersonsaid.

To attract hummingbirds, Mr. Pe-terson says to dissolve some sugar(not honey) in water and dispense itin a tube or feeder made for this,<available at your local garden store."Sugar water is akin to nectar and thehummingbirds love this. It helps getthem going. They have a metabolicrate 40 times that of a human. Butdon't give them honey, they can't di-gest it."

Of course, Mr. Peterson recom-mends water to attract these featheredcreatures to your backyard . "Birdslove to bathe several times daily," heconcluded. "They like to keep theirfeathers clean and they like to get ridof parasites. Some birds like tomoisten their food. In winter, you canpurchase some warm water bird bathsthat have heaters. There is no singleattraction better than water.

A dinner with roots in Southernheritage for the season of rebirth

Even though we have had somenippy days this past week, the frost iscompletely out of the ground, for-sythia buds are swelling and the sunhas a welcome warmth. It is the sea-son of rebirth, of the earth's renewal.

Perhaps that is why I like thisdinner with dishes firmly rooted inSouthern heritage. The history of theSouth, tied to the land and relying onagriculture, produced a cookery per-

fectly tuned to the changing seasons.

One of my favorite cookbooks isEdna Lewis's "A Taste of CountryCooking," which tells of growing upin a rural Virginia community thatcooked and ate according to the sea-sons. No people are more consciousof every herb, where wild onions andmushrooms grow and jelly is madefrom wild grapes.

"You look tired." Hasthis been said about youtoo often around theoffice? Does that face in •the mirror feel a lot younger that it looks?

If it is time to explore an investment in yourappearance...and a new suit isn't enough, you maywant to consider cosmetic surgery.

Current techniques in aesthetic surgery such asfacial contouring, eyelid surgery and CO2 laserresurfacing might be right for you. You can lookmore youthful in a safe and natural way. Mostprocedures can be done in the office or a same-daysurgical center and you'll be back to work in abouta week.

Friday, April 12,1996 Franklin News-Record

A special approach to the artsBy Frances Sexauer

Special WriterFor most people involved in com-

munity theater, memorizing lines, getting over stage fright and takingdirection is a challenge.

Add to that a disability such asblindness or a hearing impairmentand acting becomes even more chal-

. lenging.Nevertheless, local disabled ac-

tors and actresses, such as LaurenCasey of Monmouth Junction, havefound a home in the Unlimited Po-tential Theater Company (UPTCo).

UPTCo was formed in 1988 as aproject of the North Brunswick-basednon-profit group Very Special ArtsNew Jersey to provide experiences inall aspects of theater to disabled resi-dents throughout the state.

Ms. Casey, who is blind, has beena member of UPTCo since it wasformed. While she said she feelscomfortable there, part of the reasonshe stays is because it would be veryhard for her to move on. UPTCo isthe only theater company in New Jer-sey offering opportunities in all as-pects of theater to people both withdisabilities and without disabilities.

This point was driven home re-cently when a woman told Ms. Caseyshe was such a good actress sheshould expand into larger communitytheaters.

"What I said to her was 'are yougoing to drive me to and from re-

hearsals and Braille my scripts forme?' and she said no," Ms. Caseysaid. "When you have to ask peopleto take you grocery shopping and tothe doctor, those are importantthings. And then you ask people todrop what they are doing and takeyou to community theater? You haveto prioritize."

That's why Ms. Casey, workingtogether with Very Special Arts Proj-ect Director Vera Schwartz, came upwith the idea for a state-wide, all-dayconference entitled "Spotlight on Ac-cess: Integrating Performers WithDisabilities into Community The-ater."

The conference will take placebetween 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Satur-day, April 13, at Villagers Theatre inSomerset.

The event, the first of its kind, will kick-off a year-long programaimed at getting community theatersto focus on the needs of both per-formers and audience members withdisabilities.

"If only one or two more theatersopen up and do this, that's one or twomore than are doing it now," Ms.Casey said. "That was the whole ideaof it really — an education for thecommunity theaters."

Ms. Casey and fellow membersof UPTCo, including South Bruns-wick resident Joyce Indik, will per-form an original play for the confer-ence based on their own lifeexperiences and will also sit on dis-cussion panel.

Among the topics scheduled arethe special challenges people withdisabilities face when it comes tocommunity theater.

"It's harder because even if youwant to get involved in communitytheater, it's going to take up a lot ofyour time," said Ms. Casey, whoworks full-time as a social workerwith the state Division of Develop-mental Disabilities. "And you have toget to rehearsals and you have to geta ride back from rehearsals when youcan't drive yourself. It's not like NewYork City where you have masstransportation.

"You have to have the script inaccessible form and have the directorand other actors helping you blockthe scene so you know where every-thing is and where to move," Ms.Casey continued.

"With UPTCo it's already part ofthe understanding," she said. "Theywill help you as best they can andyou will have the scripts accessible toyou and directors who already under-stand they will be working with peo-ple with disabilities."

"We're devoted to providing artsprograms to people with disabilities,"Ms. Schwartz said of the 18-year-oldVery Special Arts. "We have chil-dren's programs, visual arts, writing, theater.

"girls receive significantly less attention from teachers than boys do."And while boys are encouraged to speak out in class, girls are told toraise their hands and wait to be called on.
