Page 5: Voice perception and cognitive processing: the theatre of mind

Experimental Methods: Experimental methods are among the scientific methods used in psychological research. True experiments involve the careful observation of the effects of one or more variables (independent variables) on one or more outcome variables (dependent variables) under carefully controlled conditions with subjects randomly assigned to treatments (Corsini, 1994)

Design of experiment:

How to measure something only present in the mind of the listener?

Measuring the “Impressions, mental image, attention and recall”

Questionnaire:

1. Impressions: Osgood’s semantic differential (pairs of adjectives) 2. Mental images: Open questionnaire (Quantity-Vividness Scale, Ellen & Bone

1991) 3. Attention: Self reported (Likert Scale) 4. Recall: Free recall questionnaire

2 experimental conditions (image/no image)

4 variables (impressions, mental image, attention and recall)

8 voices

…Some results…

……Research

new possibilities…..

Page 14: Voice perception and cognitive processing: the theatre of mind

New methods…. “Researchers in this lab, along with Ccni (Center for cognitive Neuroimagining) aim at developing new methods to further understand brain mechanism and locating the brain regions involved with recognition of the voice, the face or the actions, emotions and perceptions of a person”

Page 15: Voice perception and cognitive processing: the theatre of mind

fMRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging to locate the brain regions

involved with recognizing the voice, the face or the actions of a person

Page 16: Voice perception and cognitive processing: the theatre of mind

EEG & MEG: Electroencephalography (EEG) or Magnetoencephalography (MEG)

to understand how networks of cortical brain regions carry out such functions, with a time millisecond resolution

TMS: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to

temporary modify brain function and measure how this improves or interferes with performance
