Typical Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Design
Nuclearpowerplantsgenerateelectricityusingthesameengineeringtechnologyasconventionalsteamplantsthatburnfossilfuelslikecoal,oilornaturalgas.Thedifferenceistheheatsourceusedtomakesteam.Fuelrodsinthereactorcorecontainuraniumpellets.Theuraniumatomsundergoachainreactionwheretheysplit,orfission,creatingheat.Whenwaterispumpedaroundthehotfuelrods,itabsorbsthisheat.Ina
pressurizedreactor,likethoseatPlantVogtle,thiswateriskeptunderhighpressure,likeapressurecooker.Thissuperheatedwaterissentthroughtubesinasteamgeneratorwherecoolerwatersurroundsitandboilstosteam.Thetwowatersourcesremainseparatedfromeachother;onlytheheatistransferred.
Thesteamturnsbladesonaturbinegenerator,causingittospinamagnetinsideacoilofwire.Themotioncauseselectronstomovealongthewireinaconstantflowcalledanelectriccurrent.Waterfromthecoolingtowercondensestheremainingsteamanditflowsbacktothecoolingtowerwhereexcessheatisgivenoffasamistabovethetower.
Thenewunits3and4atPlantVogtlewilluseWestinghouseAdvancedPassive(AP1000)technology.Theseunitsoperateusingthesamebasictechnologyasatraditionalnuclearplant;however,thenewunitsincorporateadvancementsandimprovementsinnucleartechnology.Theseunitsbuildonprovennucleartechnology,whilealsoincorporatingimprovementsinthattechnology.Thesenewunitswillincludepassivesafetysystemsthatusenaturalforceslikegravityandcompressedairinsteadofactivemachinerylikepumpsorfans.
Thenewunitswillbebuiltusingmodularconstructiontechniques.Manyofthepartswillbeassembledawayfromtheplant.Thesepartswillbeputtogetherinlargemodulesthatwillbetransportedtotheplantsiteandassembledtogetherthere.Thistechniqueallowsmoreconstructionactivitiestobeper-formedinparallel,reducingconstructiontimeandcost.

PlantVogtleUnits3and4aretheU.S.nuclearindustry’sreferenceplantforWestinghouseAP1000technology.Asthereferenceplant,theseunitswillbethefirstonesinAmericatobelicensedtooper-ateusingAP1000technology.PlantVogtleUnits3and4willbeamongthefirstnewnuclearplantsconstructedinAmericainmorethan30years.
TheGeorgiaPublicServiceCommissionapprovedtheprojectinMarch2009.
