The principleThe rotary lobe pump is a positive displacement pump. The principle is ingeniously simple: The rotating elastomer-coated lobes provide a continuous sealing line between the suction and discharge sides. The medium is trapped in a cavity and transferred along the top and bottom housing segments. This works equally well in both directions which makes the pump fully reversible, without apreferred direction of rotation, and enables a particularly compact type of construction but also gentle pumping, good priming and dry-running characteristics and easy access to the pumping elements.

They are suitable for various materials such as adhesives, acids, alkaline solutions, hydrocarbons, or polymers. Economical pumping of sludgeThe rotary lobe pumps in the IQ and VX series pump sludge efficiently and economically. Thanks to their compact design, the space required for operation, servicing, and maintenance is very small, so the machine room can be reduced in size accordingly.

This was also the experience of Texas A&M in its sewage treatment plant. Once the progressive cavity pumps were replaced by VX rotary lobe pumps in piggy-back design, all maintenance and servicing work could be carried out directly on site without dismounting the pump. Air is reliably expelled from pipes that have run empty, and expensive repairs of burned-out rotors or stators are a thing of the past.

numerous pumping tasks such as feeding the decanter or the centrifuge. They also remove sludge from the holding tanks and fill the tankers that come to collect it. With a dry matter content of 8% or more, even a limited installation space does not present a problem thanks to the piggy-back configuration. Vogel-sang rotary lobe pumps draw the sludge in reliably and pump it to dewatering facilities or other destinations. Their reversible flow direction means that all tasks can be easily implemented by changing the settings of gate valves.

Digester feeding and agitationVX rotary lobe pumps are the best choice when it comes to pumping liquid media cost effectively in biogas plants. They reliably pump slurry, grease and other liquid directly into the digester. They also feed mixing tanks/devices, convey recirculated material for mashing, or pump blended organic suspensions reliably into the digester. Furthermore, VX pumps agitate digesters smoothly and efficiently.

Central pump stationOur VX pumps excel as central pump stations in biogas plants. Even media with a high proportion of foreign matter are no problem for them, even when pumped from remote storage facilities, and they expel air from pipes. They pump both organic suspensions and low-viscosity digestate reliably, ensuring trouble-free transfer from digesters to post digesters, for example. Whether permanently installed or as a mobile unit, VX rotary lobe pumps with their capacity of up to 20,000 liters per minute ensure minimum tank filling times. The gearbox housing is a compact, rigid part, providing the basis for a long lifetime for the bearings and gearbox. The minimal distance between bearing and lobe ensures low shaft deflectionand minimal pressure-related wear. This guarantees high efficiency and cost-effective pumping.

Housing features and optionsThe adjustable pump housing segments compensate wear without additional parts and material costs and can be replaced individually if required.

In addition to the wear plates on the gearbox side and face side, the pump chamber can be equipped with radial wear plates made of extra-hardened special steel, e.g. Hardox® – only on Vogelsang rotary lobe pumps. They are formed using a unique process, and are characterized by an extraordinary degree of wear resistance. In this way, the plate system protects virtually the entire pump chamber, extends the time between maintenance intervals, and reduces operating costs.

A wide range of material options allows customized adjustment according to the specific application. Alongside the standard model in abrasion-resistant gray cast iron, versions in ADI and stainless steel are stocked as well. On request, the components of the pump chamber can be manufactured from duplex steel or a nickel-based alloy. Other options for customization include heat treatment and wear-resistant coatings for the wear plates and housing components.

Maintenance made easy

1. Open the cover: Unfasten the four nuts, remove the cover, and you have free access to the pumping chamber. If necessary, you can also replace the wear plate of the cover at this stage.

2. Remove the lobes: Unfasten the strain bolts, remove the pressure discs on the lobes. Then place the puller on the lobes and dismount them.

3. Remove the wear plates: After you have removed the lobes, all you have to do is remove two screws and you can remove the wear plate at the gearbox side.

We never lose sight of real-world practices when we are developing our products. This is why we have always built machines that allow you to work in an uncomplicated and economical way, always in keeping with Vogelsang standards.

4. Remove the Quality Cartridge mechanical seal: Using a simple pull-out device, you can now pull out the Cartridge mechanical seal and then replace it just as easily.

Vogelsang rotary lobe pumps | Lobes | InjectionSystem

If the focus is on high volumetric efficiency and pulsation-free running, the patented HiFlo® and HiFlo® plus lobes are the ideal choice. Constant pumping and more sealing lines allow high pressures and drawing of fluid from deep pits. If sturdy operation is your priority, classic bi-lobes are perfect. Both lobe types are also available with replaceable lobe tips on request.

Lobes and elastomersThe construction and material of the lobe are just as important as its shape. The elastomer coating is inseparably joined to the lobe core in a hot vulcanization process using a special primer (bonding agent). The lobes are thus seamlessly rubberized all around. In addition to the elastomer-coated lobes, the range also includes solid material lobes made of steel or stainless steel.

Lobes for the VX and IQ seriesEvery medium and every application has its own special requirements. The medium may be highly viscous, or abrasive, or may contain a high proportion of foreign or fibrous matter; it may be sensitive to shear forces, or exhibit non-Newtonian behavior. Innovative technology for rotary lobe pumps used to pump media containing foreign matter

In conventionally designed rotary lobe pumps, foreign matter does not immediately enter the pump chamber, but instead rotates in front of the pump chamber, potentially damaging the lobe tips.

In the InjectionSystem, an adapted housingdesign ensures that foreign matter is optimally fed into and through the pump. It injects foreign matter directly into the pumping chambers as they open up. This reduces collisions and minimizes the resulting damage to the lobe tips. The internal sealing of the pump is also improved. This increases its eªectiveness and suction capacity.

Simple retrofittingVX rotary lobe pumps can be easily equipped with the InjectionSystem at a later time while replacing the pump housing segments.

Individual designVariants adapted for specific types of applications are available:

Injection S: For pumping easily flowing fluids containing foreign matter. Symmetrical pump housing segments with the InjectionSystem design, arranged on the discharge and suction sides.

Solid matter feeders For economical digester feeding with mashed substrate.Their optimal preparation of the cosubstrate increases the gas yield and reduces the energy required for mixing, stirring, and pumping.
