2.1 Quick Start
ConnectthisplugtotheheadsetjackonyouriPhone,iPodTouchoriPad.

2.2 Using VocaLive with headphones
ChooseHeadphonesafterconnectingyouriRigMictoproperlysetVocaLivefor usage with headphones or earbuds. Follow carefully the instructionsbelowinordertoavoidfeedbacksthatmaydamageyourhearing.

NEVER turn the “NO FEEDBACK” option OFF in the VocaLive app SETUP page when using headphones or earbuds.AlwayskeepthisoptionONwhenusingheadphonesorearbudstoavoidpossiblefeedback.
IfyouarelisteningtoVocaLiveusingearphonesthatincludeamicrophone,alsopleaselowerthevolumetoavoidpossiblefeedback.
NEVER plug in or unplug your headphones when VocaLive is open and running.
WARNING: Permanent hearing loss may occur if earbuds or headphones are used at high volume. You can adapt over time to a higher volume of sound, which may sound normal but can be damaging to your hearing. Set your device volume to a safe level before that happens. If you experience ring-ing in your ears, reduce the volume or discontinue use of earbuds or headphones with your device.
2.3 Using VocaLive with mixers, speakers or amplifiers
ChooseSpeakersfromthemessagethatpopsupafterconnectingyouriRigMictosetVocaLiveforlisteningwithmixers,speakersoramplifiers.
IMPORTANT: To avoid feedback, ALWAYS use 1/8” stereo jack to TWO x RCA or TWO x 1/4” MONO jack cables to connect to amplifiers, powered speakers or mixers. NEVER use STEREO headphone 1/8” to STEREO 1/4” adapters or splitters.

TheSETUPsectionhelpsyoutooptimizeVocaLivesettingsinordertoachievethebestsoundpossible.YoucanaccessthesectionbytappingontheSETUPbut-tonatthebottomoftheinterface,fromtheTools,FXandAmpsections.
3.1 Active Input and Level
AtthetopoftheSetupinterfaceyouwillfindtheindicationofthecurrentlyactive input (Built-in microphone or Headset microphone – note that theiRigMicappearsasaHeadsetmicrophone).
TheIn/Outlevelmetersandcontrolsareimmediatelybelow.Toproperlysetyourinputlevel,increasethegainuptothepointwherethetopclippingLEDstartsblinking,thenloweritalittlebittoavoidclipping.
Thelowerpartofthissectionhelpstomonitorandtrimtheoutputlevel.Toreturntothedefaultsettings,justdouble-taponthefaders.
3.2 Built-in MIC
Thisbuttonletsyouenableordisablethebuilt-inMicofyourdevice,incaseyouwanttouseitasyourrecordingsourcefortheRecorder.
3.3 Latency
Latencyisaslightdelayintroducedbydigitalsignalprocessing.SetthistoULTRA-LOW ifyouexperiencetoomuchdelaybetweenwhatyousingandwhatyouhear.SwitchbacktoLOWifyouhearclicksorpopsinthesignal.
3.4 No Feedback
Enable “No Feedback” minimize the risk of “Larsen” effects (high pitchedconstantnotes).
SetthisoptiontoONorOFF toenableordisableit.Notethatturning“NoFeedback”ONwhenlisteningfromthebuilt-inspeakeroftheiPhoneoriPodtouchwillmutethesound.
Choosing AUTO for the No Feedback option will automatically turn it ONwhenyouconnectheadphonesortheiRigMicandturnitOFFwhenyouarelisteningfromthedevice’sbuilt-inspeaker.
Setthe“NoFeedback”optiontoOFFwhenyouarelisteningtoVocaLivewithyourdeviceortheiRigMicconnectedtoamixer,anamplifierorexternalmonitors.

3.5 Retain Settings
Enablethisoptiontomaintainlastcustomsettingoneachmodule.If“RetainSettings”issettoOFF,whenyouswitchtoanothereffectwithinthesameslotandthengobacktothepreviouseffect,theparametersofthepreviouslyselectedeffectwillresettothedefaultvalues.
3.6 Auto Sleep
Enable “Auto Sleep” to reduce battery consumption during long playingsessions. The device display will turn off after the “Auto-Lock” time haspassed (set the “Auto-Lock” time in the General settings of your iPhone /iPodTouch/iPad).
Disable“AutoSleep”ifyouhearclicksandpopswhileplaying.
3.7 Background Audio
TurnthisoptionONifyouwanttohearVocaLive’ssoundalsowhentheappisrunninginbackground.

4.1 Vocal Trainer
TheVocalTrainerisatthetopoftheToolssection.PressthePlaybuttontohear a piano arpeggio accompaniment with which to warm up your voiceforsinging.PressPlayagaintostopthearpeggio.PresstheKeybuttontoincrementtherootnoteofthearpeggioinsemitones.PresstheScalebuttontotogglebetweenamajorandminorarpeggio.
4.2 Metronome
In theToolssectionyouwillalso findaMetronome.Tap theONbutton toenable / disable the Metronome. The current BPM (beats per minute) isdisplayedinthefieldonthetop-rightoftheMetronomesection.
TheMetronome LED barallowsyoutochangethemetronome’stempo.TouchanddragtochangetheBPMvalue.DraggingtheLEDbartotherightwillincreasethevalueandviceversa.YoucanalsosetyourtempobyTAPPING.Todothat,touchtheTapbuttonatleast4timesinsyncwiththematerialyoutrytomatchthetempowith.Double-taponthedisplayedBPMvaluetosettheMetronometempotoawell-definedvalueusingascrollwheel.

TheAudioDemopanelallowsyoutoexperimentwiththeVocaLiveeffectswithoutsingingintoyourdevice.TheAudioDemoplayspre-recordedaudiodemofilesincludedintheapp.Chooseoneofthe6audiodemofilesbytappingontheDemobuttonontheright,andplayitbytappingPlay.WhentheDemobuttonissetonAuto,all6audiodemoswillplaysequentially.

VocaLivehasapowerfulmemorysystemthatenablesyoutostoreyourFXsettingsintwoways:asaFAVORITEorasaPRESET.BoththeFavoritesandthePresetsstoretheentire3-effectchainalongwiththesettingsforeachofthe3effects.FavoritesandPresetsstoretheidenticalinformation;Theonlydifferenceishowyouaccessthem.
FAVORITESareaccessedbythefourFavoritebuttonsat thebottomof theapp,A,B,CandD.ToloadaFavorite,simplypresstheA,B,CorDbutton.TosaveaFavorite,simplyholdtheFavoritelocationofyourchoice(A,B,CorD)forafewsecondsuntilthelocationflashestoindicatethatyourFavoritehasbeensaved.TherearefourFavoritesinVocaLive.
YoucanevensaveyourPresetsasFavorites for fasteraccess.Simply loadthePresetofyourchoice,thenholdyourdesiredFavoritebuttontosaveittothatlocation.
NotethattheFavoritelocations(A,B,CandD)willappearinblueifdataisstoredthere.Theywillappearinwhiteifthelocationisempty

PRESETSareaccessedbytappingthePRESETbuttonatthetopleftof theapp.PresetsareorganizedintoCATEGORIES.ThinkofCategoriesasfoldersthat contain collections of Presets. Tap the PRESET button to display theCategorieswindowcontainingthelistofCategories.Iftherearemorethan6Categories,youcanscrollthroughthelistbysimplydraggingthewindowupanddown.

ToaddanewCategory,tapthe+buttonintheupperrightpartoftheapp,andadialogboxwillappearwhereyoucannameyournewCategory.Let’ssayyouwanttocreateanewCategoryfortocontainseveralPitchFixPresetsset tovariousmusicalkeysandwithvariouscorrectionstrengths.Tap the+ button, then enter the name of the Category. In this case, let’s call theCategory“PitchCorrectors”.
PressDoneonceyouhavetypedinthename,andthenewCategorywillthenappearatthebottomoftheCategorylist.

To open a Category to get to the Presets inside, simply tap the Categoryname,andthePresetswillappear.Thinkofthisasopeningafolder.AswithCategories,iftherearemorethan6PresetsinaCategory,youcanscrollupanddownthroughlistbydraggingthewindow.
YoucanrenameanddeletePresetsbypressingtheEDITbuttonintheupperrightpartoftheappinthesamewaythatyoueditCategories.Similarly,youcanaddnewPresetsinthesamewaybypressingthe+buttonintheupperrightpartoftheapp.

ManyofthePresetsinVocaLivearebasedonmusicalscalesandkeys. TogetthemostoutofthesePresetsandthepitch–basedVocaLiveeffects,itishelpfultohaveabasicknowledgeofmusictheory.Hereisabriefexplana-tionoftheconceptofmusicalscalesandkeys:
Amusicalscaleismadeupofasequenceofnotesthatstartsatthe“tonic”(or root note) and ends at the “octave”. The top note of the scale – theoctave–isthesamepitchastherootnotebutdoublethefrequencyor“oneoctavehigher”).ACscalestartsonCandendsonConeoctavehigher.AGscalestartsonGandendsonGoneoctavehigher,etc.Inbetweenarethe“degrees”ofthescale,andthedegreesareexpressedasnumbersrelativetothetonic(rootnote).InthecaseofaCMajorscale,theGnoteisthe5thdegreebecauseitis5notesfromtherootofC(C,D,E,F,G).TheFnoteisthe4thdegree,theEnoteisthe3rddegree,etc.
Amusicalkey isbasedononeof the12musicalnotes (C,C#,D,D#,E,F,F#,G,G#,A,A#,B)alongwithascale(Major,Minor,oroneof4“modes”:Dorian,Phrygian,LydianandMixolydian).Thetypeofscaledeterminestheintervalsbetweenthenotes. Akey, then, isdescribedbytherootnote(C,C#,D,etc.)andthescale.

In VocaLive, you will see parameters for KEY and for SCALE in the PitchFix and Choir effects. For the best results, it is important to match theseparameterstothesongthatyouareperformingsothattheeffectwillselecttheappropriatenotesforyou.Ifyouarenotsureofthekeyorscaleofthesong,youcanchoosetheChromaticoptionwhichleavesallofthenotesaspossibilitiesfortheeffectstosound.

Thereare3effectsslotsinVocaLive,buttheVocalEffectscanonlyoccupythefirstslotbecauseoftheirsophisticatedprocessingalgorithms.Theothereffectslotsareforthe“StudioEffects”(explainedseparately).
TochooseaVocalEffect, tap the firsteffectslot,andyouwill see ithigh-lightedinblue.ThenchooseoneoftheVocalEffectsfromthehorizontallistimmediatelyaboveeffectsslot1.YoucanchoosebetweenPitchFix,Choir,Doubler,MorphandDe-Essertoputoneofthoseeffectsinthefirsteffectsslot.NotethatyoucanalsoputaStudioEffectinthefirstslotifyoudonotwishtouseaVocalEffect.
Toedittheeffectsinanyslot,pressthebluerightarrowtogotothededi-catedeffectpageforthatslot.Youwillseeagraphicrepresentationoftheeffectwhereitappearslikeastompboxpedal.TaptheblueOn/Offswitchatthebottomtoenableordisabletheeffect.OryoucanalternatelyusetheBYPASS button on the upper right to do the same thing. To adjust any oftheeffect’sparameters,simplytouchtheknoboftheparameteryouwanttoadjustandmoveituptoincreasethevalueordowntodecreasethevalue.Youcanalso tap theparameterknob toselect itand thenadjust itsvalueusingthelargegraphicsliderontheright.

Pitch Fix is powerful pitch correction effect with a straightforward and easy-to-useinterface.Youcansavetimeinthebyfixingintonationerrorsonthefly.Experimentingwithcreativeandradicalcombinationsofitssettingscancreateamazingresults.PitchFixquantizes(tunes)thepitchoftheincomingsignal.Usethiseffecttomakeyoursingingmoreintuneorasahard–quantizedpitcheffectformodernpopproductions.Youcanselectthemusicalkeyinwhichtomoreaccuratelycorrectthepitchforaspecificsong,oryoucanselect“Chromatic”tocorrectthepitchinamoregeneralwaywithall12notesasanavailableoption.Ifyouarenotsureofthekeyofyoursong,choosetheChromaticoption.
Correction Strip: thecorrection isdisplayed fromthenotedetected toshowtheamountofcorrection/quantizationappliedbytheeffect.
MODE:Soft:Slowretune.Thissettingmakes thecorrectionslowlywhichmakesitlessnoticeable.Retunespeedis0.8seconds.Medium: Classic Retune. This setting is the best compromisebetween pitch correction and natural sound. Retune speed is 150milliseconds.Hard:Typicalretune“effect”.Thissettingproducethetypicalhardpitch correction FX used on many modern R&B vocals. Retunesspeedis10milliseconds.

TheChoireffectcangenerateuptothreedistinctharmonizationvoicestoenrichandexpandyourvocalpresence.Useittocreatebasicharmonies,enchantingchoirs or incredible sci-fi effects. The harmonizer has 3 separate intervals forpitchshiftingordoubling.
SELECT: chooses the intervals of harmonization to add using the up /downarrows.Selectvoice1,2or3andthentapthearrowstomovetheshift interval up or down for each voice. 7.3 Double
The Double adds the effect of two voices singing together from a singlesource.Thiseffectletsyouquicklyrecreatestudiodoubledsoundsduringasingleliveperformance.Youcanthickenyourvoice,makeitmoreintimateorcreatedetunedeffectsbyadjustingthevariouscontrols.
