• The Napoleonic Wars created instability of European monarchs and their colonies.

• The Enlightenment convinced people that they should rule themselves and because everybody was fighting Napoleon, they could not maintain order in their colonies, which were united by nationalism (common culture, traditions, heritage, and ethnicity).
