• The British were Napoleon’s biggest enemy

• To destroy them he began the Continental Blockade– Any neutral country or ally of the French empire

were prohibited from trading AT ALL with Britain– Attempt to economically starve them

• Tsar Alexander I, an ally of Napoleon, refused to be part of continental blockade anymore (was hurting Russian economy)

• So Napoleon decides to invade Russia….in June. With 30 days supply of food.

• Wanted to restore balance of power to Europe

• The Congress redrew Europe's political map, returning old monarchs to power

• Klemens Wenzel Von Metternich- Leader of Austria, leader of Congress

• The Napoleonic Wars created instability of European monarchs and their colonies.

• The Enlightenment convinced people that they should rule themselves and because everybody was fighting Napoleon, they could not maintain order in their colonies, which were united by nationalism (common culture, traditions, heritage, and ethnicity). PRIDE IN one’s country and the desire to be free.
