How to calibrate HP VNA

VNA Calibration (HP 8720D)

Select the Cal button under the Response menu. In the GUI menu press CAL KIT[] (The VNA will default to HP 85052D 35.mm cal kit) SELECT CAL KIT MORE 2.4mm HP 85056 The VNA is now set to use the 85056D 2.4mm cal. kit that has been borrowed from Christos.

NOTE: We are using 3.5mm SMA. Thus the PE9651(2.4mm female to 3.5mm male) and the SM3036(3.5mm female to 2.4mm male) converters were used for this calibration. Once the calibration is completed the PE9651 and the SM3036 are replace with the PE9722 (3.5mm male to 3.5mm male) and the PE9723 (3.5mm female to 3.5mm male) respectively.

Either Return to the Cal GUI menu or press the Cal button under the Response menu again. Press the CALIBRATE MENU button Depending on the set up of your test cables and measurements needed select the corresponding menu option (S11 1-Port or S22 1-Port in this tutorial) Connect the open termination cap and press the Open button in the GUI window. Connect the short termination cap and press the Short button in the GUI window. Connect the 50 Ohm load termination cap and press the load button in the GUI window. Select the BROADBAND LOAD button Press the DONE LOAD button Press the DONE CAL button

Calibration is completed and now measurements can be taken. If you would like to save the calibration data for the 50 Ohm follow the steps in Saving Data now.

S11 Measurements

Select the Start button under the Stimulus menu. Input your start frequency (50 MHz in this tutorial)

Select the Stop button under the Stimulus menu. Input your stop frequency (11 GHz in this tutorial) Select the Menu button under the Stimulus menu. In the GUI menu press NUMBER OF POINTS Input your number of points (1601 in this tutorial) Select the Meas button under the Response menu.- In the GUI menu press your chosen scattering parameter measurement. (For this tutorial either S11 1-port or S22 1-port)

Saving Data

Select the Save/Recall button under the Instrument State menu. To format the floppy disk Press SELECT DISK in the GUI menu. Select Internal Disk in the GUI menu. To define the data that will be saved Select Define Disk Save in the GUI menu. Select SAVE USING ASCII Select Data Only ON Select Data Array ON Select RAW Array ON (This is just needed for saving the Calibration and can be turned off one the Cal has been saved. Select OFF for the rest of the options. Now press the Save State button under the GUI window to save to the floppy disk.
