Management Pack for SAP 1The VMware vRealize® True Visibility™ Management Pack for SAP is an embedded adapter for vRealize Operations (vROps), collecting performance data from critical SAP resources within your SAP environment and making it available within the vRealize Operations user interface. Extending your SAP monitoring capabilities to vROps provides insight into the performance, capacity, and health of SAP workloads running on VMware—all in one unified interface.

How the Management Pack Collects Data

During each data collection cycle, the Management Pack connects to the SAP Control WebService Interface through the Central Instance Host to retrieve data for SAP resources. This collection process allows an SAP system to find other SAP systems, as the query reaches all other hosts known through the Central Instance Host.

Known Issues/Limitations

The following known issues/limitations exist for the currently-released version of the Management Pack:

n A Landscape container object must be set up in vROps manually, and super metrics must be imported, in order to make use of a SAP Landscape resource.

n All hosts must be resolvable on the vROps system via DNS. For details, see: VMware KB article for remediation steps on a vApp.

n For all metrics in the “Rollup Metrics” metric group of System and Host resources, note that metrics may not be calculated if descendants with those metrics are not present in your environment. This does not indicate an issue in your SAP environment; it simply means that it is not configured in such a way that the Management Pack can aggregate certain metrics.

Note Example: A System resource will only calculate the average “Dialog Front End Net Time” when it has Dual Stack Instance or ABAP Instance children with the “Front End Net Time” metric.

Upgrading the Management Pack (SAP) 3When upgrading to a newer version of the Management Pack, we recommend the following tasks:

n Delete existing SAP dashboards

n Adjust SSL Configuration setting (HTTP users)

Delete existing SAP dashboards

If you do not remove the dashboards from a previous version of the Management Pack before installing the new version, you will see duplicate SAP dashboards in the Dashboard List drop-down menu after upgrading.

To remove existing Management Pack dashboards:

1 Navigate to Content > Dashboards .

2 Multi-select all SAP dashboards.

3 Click Delete Dashboard .

4 Click Yes when the confirmation dialog box appears to delete the selected dashboards.

Adjust SSL Configuration setting (HTTP users)

Caution IMPORTANT: An upgrade from the previous release of this Management Pack will cause any adapter instances previously using HTTP to fail.

Background: In the previous release, the user could specify HTTP (default) or HTTPS using the Protocol configuration setting.

Change for this release: The Protocol setting was replaced with the SSL Configuration setting (possible values = Verify (default), No Verify, or No SSL). Because of this change, any existing adapter instance previously set to HTTP will fail when upgrading.

Required action: After upgrading, you must manually specify No SSL as the value for the SSL Configuration setting in the Manage Solution window.

Installing the Management Pack (SAP) 4This vRealize Operations Management Pack is installed using a .pak file.

1 Log in to vRealize Operations as an admin user.

2 From the top navigation bar, select Administration. In the left panel, the default Solutions

view will be selected. In the right panel, click the Add icon.

Note If you are using vROps 7.5, Solutions will have two subcategories: Configuration and Repository. Select Repository and scroll down to Other Management Packs and select Add a Management Pack to install a new management pack. Refer to the second screenshot below if needed.

3 The Add Solution window will appear. Browse to the location of the saved .pak file, then click Upload.

5 Read and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA), then click Next.

Creating a Credential (SAP)

One of the required configuration tasks for the Management Pack for SAP is to create a set of credentials in vROps using your SAP Control WebService Interface user name and password.

Prerequisites

n Install the Management Pack. See: Chapter 4 Installing the Management Pack (SAP)

n Credential name: A name for this set of credentials

n User Name: Your SAP Control WebService Interface User Name

n Password: The password associated with your SAP Control WebService Interface User Name

n vRealize User Name: User Name for your vRealize Operations system

n vRealize Password: Password for your vRealize Operations system

Results

Important The vRealize user name and password fields are shown only when the deprecated credential kind is selected. These fields are maintained for backward compatibility purposes only and are not necessary for proper operation of the Management Pack.

Before you can begin using the Management Pack, you must create an adapter instance to identify the host from which the Management Pack will retrieve data.

Procedure


2 Click the Administration icon. In the right panel, the Solutions view will be displayed.

3 Select SAP Adapter from the Solutions list.

4 Click the Configure icon. The Manage Solution window will appear.

Note If you need to create multiple adapter instances, click the Add icon above the Instance Name list on the left to additional adapter instances.

5 In the Manage Solution window, enter the following information:

a Adapter Settings:

1 Display Name: Enter a name for this particular adapter instance of the Management Pack.

2 Description: Optional, but it can be helpful to describe multiple adapter instances of the Management Pack.

b Basic Settings:

1 Central Instance Host Name(s): Enter a comma-separated list of server names (or IP addresses) for your SAP system's Central Instance Host(s).

Important Host name is recommended (not IP address). If you provide an IP address, the management pack can connect to only the specified host and will not search for (and connect to) other hosts in your system. Search domains for hosts are fully supported using the Search Domain Advanced Setting below.

Important All hosts must be resolvable on the vROps system via DNS. See: VMware KB article for remediation steps on a vApp.

Important If you wish to create external relationships between your SAP HANA database server and your SAP application server, you must also add the SAP HANA database host(s) to the Central Instance Host Name(s) field. See: Resource Kinds and Relationships (SAP).

2 Credential: Select the credential you created when Chapter 5 Configuring the Management Pack (SAP).

c Advanced Settings:

1 Collector(s)/Groups: Default Collector/Group is automatically selected. Click the drop-down menu if you want to run the collection on a different node.

2 SSL Configuration: The default setting is No Verify (SSL enabled/certificate not verified); other options include No SSL (SSL disabled) and Verify (SSL enabled/certificate is verified).

3 Search Domain: Enter a search domain in this field (e.g. bluemedora.localnet), which creates a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) and allows the management pack to search for (and connect to) additional hosts in your SAP system.

4 Support Autodiscovery: This should be True. When you enable autodiscovery, the Management Pack creates resources and relationships in vROps, then collects data for the discovered resources after the main collection query runs.

Note The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes. For information about changing the collection interval, see: Configuring the Properties File (SAP).

Configuring the Properties File (SAP)

You may want to further customize your adapter instance configuration using the sap.properties file.

The following additional configuration settings can be found in the sap.properties file located in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/plugins/inbound/sap_adapter/conf/ folder. You can modify the entries in the file, and they will be read in during the next collection.

2 Under Inventory Trees , select All Objects , then expand the SAP Adapter objects list.

3 Select a resource from the list, then click the All Metrics tab to select metrics and validate values against the data source.

Creating an SAP Landscape

You may want to create an SAP Landscape as a container object for grouping purposes in vROps. The process for setting up an SAP Landscape is outlined below.

Procedure

Creating an SAP Landscape includes the following tasks:

n Creating a Container Group

n Creating Groups for the Container Object

n Importing Super Metrics

n Creating a New Policy

Creating a Container Group

1 From the vROps home screen, click Content.

2 From the menu options displayed on the left, click Group Types.

3 In the Group Types frame, click the Add icon to add a group.

4 In the window that appears, enter “SAP Landscape” as the name of the container, then click OK.

Creating Groups for the Container Object

1 From the home screen, click Environment.

2 From the menu on the left, click Custom Groups.

3 Click on the Groups tab in the main frame if not already selected.

4 Click on the Add icon to create a new group.

5 In the window that appears, enter a name for the group.

6 From the Group type drop-down menu, select the SAP Landscape container type created earlier.

7 In the Membership Criteria section, select “SAP System” for the Object Type.

8 Define a suitable criteria to match the desired SAP Systems to the Custom Group.

9 Click OK to close the window.

Importing Super Metrics

1 Copy the SAP Landscape super metrics from your vROps host to your workstation.

a Create a directory and copy the super metrics to it:

scp root@VROPSHOST:/usr/lib/vmware-vcops/user/plugins/inbound/sap_adapter/conf/supermetrics/*

2 From the home screen of vROps, click Content in the left pane.

3 In the left pane that appears, click Super Metrics.

4 Click on the Gear icon in the Super Metrics frame.

5 From the drop-down menu, select Import Super Metric.

6 Click Browse.

7 Navigate to the location of the saved super metrics folder created in step 1.

8 Select the super metric to import, then click Open.

9 Click Done to close the window.

10 Repeat steps 5 – 7 to import more super metrics.

Creating a New Policy

1 From the Administration panel, select Policies.

2 Click on the Policy Library tab.

3 Select the SAP Landscape policy.

4 For the Start with... drop-down menu, select Default Policy.

5 Click the Add icon to add a new policy.

6 In the window that appears, enter a name for the policy.

7 Click Select Base Policy. Click Add settingsfor a new set of objects. Select the Container group that you created earlier. (In our example, the container is “SAP Landscape”.)

8 Click Analysis Settings . Click Add Settings for a new set of objects. Select the Container group that you created earlier.

9 Click Collect Metrics and Properties. Using the text filter box, search for a super metric that you imported earlier.

10 For the Metrics that appear in the results, under the State column, select Local (with a green checkmark next to it) from the options.

11 For KPI and DT columns, select Yes (with a green checkmark next to it).

12 Click Apply Policy to Groups. For the group created earlier, select the checkbox.

13 Apply To Group.

14 Click Save to close the window.

Important If new super metrics are created/imported after creating the group policy, steps 8 – 10 would need to be performed for the new super metrics.

Troubleshooting the Management Pack (SAP) 6Once you have finished Chapter 4 Installing the Management Pack (SAP) and Chapter 5 Configuring the Management Pack (SAP), check the Collection State and Collection Status for the adapter instance on the Solutions page. If they show as Not Collecting or No Data Receiving, respectively, the following troubleshooting topics can help you diagnose and correct common problems with your adapter instance.

Test Connection Errors

When Creating an Adapter Instance (SAP), click Test Connection after entering all of your configuration settings to ensure vROps can connect to the specified host.

The following errors are possible:

Unknown Host Exception

Error Message: “java.net.UnknownHostException: not-a-real-system.bluemedora.localnet: unknown error”

Description: One of the Central Instance Hostname(s) provided was not connectable.

Unable to Connect

Error Message: “Unable to connect to the target system.; Unable to retrieve data from the target system.”

Description: The credentials provided were invalid or the SSL Configuration specified is preventing a proper connection.

Adapter and Collector Log Files

You can review SAP Adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files, which can be viewed in the vROps UI or in an external log viewer.

n Adapter log files are located in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/SAPAdapter/ folder.

n Collector log files are located in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder.

To set the base log level for the collector in vROps:

1 Navigate to Administration > Logs .

2 Expand the MASTER folder, then select the COLLECTOR folder.

3 Click the Edit Properties icon.

4 In the Root logger level drop-down menu, select the desired option.

n The default logging level is warning.

n To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to info.

n To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to debug.

Caution If you set the logging level to debug, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to debug only for short periods of time.

In addition to external relationships to the VMware virtual layer, the Management Pack for SAP can discover external relationships for True Visibility Suite customers who are also using the Management Packs for Oracle Database or SAP HANA.

Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) (SAP)

The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature in vROps allows you to easily navigate your SAP environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resources and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues.

To select a tag, perform the following steps:

Note Depending on the dashboard, the steps for selecting a tag may vary slightly.

1 Click the Content navigation shortcut.

2 Select Dashboards from the navigation pane.

3 Select the dashboard you want to filter, then click Edit.

4 Select Edit Widget for the dashboard widget you want to edit .

5 Select the desired configuration from the drop-down menu.

6 Under Filter, expand the SAP Container option and select the desired tag(s).

7 To save your configuration and exit the Edit window, click Save .

Note If selecting multiple configurations, you can save each one without exiting the Edit window by clicking Save Configuration.

To access the Management Pack views:

1 Navigate to Environment > All Objects > SAP Adapter .

2 Double-click on the desired object (resource).

3 Select the Details tab, then Views.

The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected.

The Management Pack for SAP contains out-of-the-box report(s) that you can export and easily share with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

The following reports are available in the Management Pack for SAP:

To access Management Pack reports:

1 Navigate to Environment > All Objects > SAP Adapter

2 Double-click on the desired object (resource).

3 Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates .

The available report(s) for the selected resource are listed and can be selected.

The Management Pack for SAP creates alerts when thresholds defined by SAP are exceeded. It provides recommended actions based on various symptoms that it detects in the environment. See the table below for the list of alerts available in the Management Pack.

Metrics (SAP)

The Management Pack for SAP collects the metrics listed in the table below, according to SAP resource kinds.

Caution For all metrics in the “Rollup Metrics” metric group of System and Host resources, please note that metrics may not be calculated if descendants with those metrics are not present in your environment. For example, a System resource will only calculate the average Dialog Front End Net Time when it has Dual Stack Instance or ABAP Instance children with the Front End Net Time metric. This does not indicate an issue in your SAP environment; it simply means that it is not configured in such a way that the Management Pack can aggregate certain metrics.
