INTRODUCING THE FIRST EVER CLINICALLY-VALIDATED, AND HYPOALLERGENIC, A N T I - MI CROBI A L & ANTIOXIDANT LAUNDRY SHAMPOO for the c lo th ing and l inens o f b ab ie s & those wi th ex t ra s ens i t i ve sk in , acne, p igmen ta t io n s OR Clothing Contact Dermat i t i s
Making a chore so much more . . . What have we made now? A uniquely skin-safe, ultra-gentle laundry shampoo (so mild you could, in a real pinch, bathe with it!). What in heaven’s name for? Laundering the clothing and linens of infants and children; those with extra-dry, sensitive, atopic, or hyperpigmented skin; or those with contact acne and/or clothing contact dermatitis. It even has monolaurin, a natural, gentle, coconut-derived anti-microbial plus a skin-soothing antioxidant. We’ve made a coddling laundering, a cosseting launderette. Ultimately, what we’ve created, is
. . . a un i que oppor tun i t y t o f awn as you l aunder .
There are a few concepts here that may give you cause for pause. Laundry as a chance to pamper? How can a backbreaking load, a muggy basement and sorting through three-day-old gym socks have anything to do with the warm pleasantries of coddling? Fawn & Launder may not transform the wash into a chore to adore but it can perhaps help lessen its drudgery if you think of how much gentle comfort you’ll be giving and getting for your efforts. What’s more, if a simple switch to a skin-safe laundry shampoo means sustained relief from itching, particularly if baby’s been fussy and unable to sleep from dry, scratchy skin — the TLC becomes far less abstract.
Can a laundry shampoo be influential on skin? That’s the other eyebrow-raising idea. How can something as dis-tant as the soap on our clothes interact with our skin enough to cause problems? It wasn’t immediately obvious to us either. In fact, when our founding dermatologist-dermatopathologist told us she wanted to make a skin-safe de-tergent, we thought she was kidding: we make so many products, all we’re missing is a laundry soap! She didn’t get the joke. One patient, good-natured lecture later, she had us lock, stock and laundry bag. (continued on page 4)

(“One Boo-Bootiful Friend-ship) on page 10).
If I may get personal for a min-ute, we’ve another “launch” that we’re celebrating: my husband and I welcomed our second child just a few weeks ago. I bring it up because the sleepless nights and glee at new milestones mirror somewhat the effort and exhilaration of VMV “summer camp” — complete with our new launch “babies” but with far less cooing. I also mention it because it makes me happy — and happy is something we believe should be shared as genuinely and copiously as possible. Here’s to your happy, and to a summer filled with bright, sunshine-y days!
products. In this issue, we launch three of them.
Our first “skinutraceutical”, Know-It-Oil, an immaculately organic virgin coconut oil with published clinical studies, de-buts on page 6. Panacea may be too strong a word, but for all the good it does the skin and body, not by much.
Our next launch — weird sci-ence: Fawn and Launder, the first truly hypoallergenic laun-dry shampoo (page 3). It’s the kind of product that no one thinks a skin care company should make but that we do solely because people really need it. For babies whose skin is naturally more sensitive and for adults with rash-, acne-, or pigmentation-prone skin, its gentleness is relief in a bottle. What can I say? We make weird wonderful.
Why else are we so busy? Each year, as demand for our popular Armada Sun and Light Screens surges beyond forecasts, our plant runs round the clock to churn out gallons of the stuff. With skin cancer officially an epidemic (“En-garde!”, page 10), this com-mitment has taken on a new gravity and exigency.
The elbow grease and science notwithstanding, we’re not immune to the hedonism, the pure HAPPY of the season: our new Meringue Makeup (page 5) isn’t just smart (multi-functional, dye-free, paraben-free), it’s also simply very pretty and pleasurable, smile-inducingly light and fluffy — as uplifting as summer should be. And speaking of uplifting, check out the darling paean to The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm
There’s a great cartoon by Robert Weber in the May 21, 2001 New Yorker. Earnest parents, visibly animated by summer plans, engage their young son in the process over breakfast. “Summer’s coming,” the father says, “How does pre-med camp sound?”
That’s pretty much our sum-mer: eager-to-oveachieve and frenetic for it. With all the problems (rashes, acne, aging, melanoma, pigmentations) caused by the sun and heat, keeping skin healthy is both a bustling enterprise and one that requires “skingenuity”.
One way we try to help is by spreading skintelligence (see TIPS throughout this InSKIN). Another — the “pre-med” in our summer camp — is by creating effective therapeutic

MAKING A CHORE SO MUCH MORE(continued from page 3)
How can laundry soap affect skin? Acne on your cheek on the side where you sleep? Spots that don’t disappear even with proper therapy and prevention? Dark or itchy underarms? Unexplained redness, rashes, or dryness on various parts of the body? Detergents with allergens can cause or contribute to contact acne, hyperpigmentations or clothing contact dermatitis on skin all over. Imagine the discomfort they can cause on delicate baby skin.
Our founding physician regularly sees patients that require comprehensively managed care such as psoriasis or stubborn eczema, “mysterious” problems such as itching on the body (revealed by patch testing to be a sensitivity to the dye used in jeans or the elastics in underwear), as well as ba-bies with widespread atopic dermatitis. In addition to therapy, she’s been prescribing an early version of Fawn & Launder (almost all our products start off as prescriptions in clinics) for decades. The ef-fect is often dramatic: simply by switching laundry soaps and avoiding as many other allergens as pos-sible, the conditions clear up remarkably.
Why use Fawn & Launder?
1) Unequaled skin safety:
Many “hypoallergenic” detergents are
loaded with fragrance (just take a whiff!) & other allergens — all of which can be extremely irritating to
babies & to adults with sensitive skin.
Fawn & Launder is 100% All-Types-Of-Fragrance-, Dye-, Phthalate-, Paraben-, and Preservative-Free. It’s also Non-Comedogenic to prevent contact acne and free of photo-allergens to prevent pig-mentations.
2) Clinical study: In addition to our regular, stringent usage and patch tests, we included Fawn & Launder in a comparative trial for clothing contact dermatitis that showed a significant improvement in skin using hypoallergenic clothing washed with this laundry shampoo.
2) VH -76/76: Fawn & Launder boasts the high-est Validated Hypoallergenicity rating, containing 0 of all 76 allergens most recently published by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group and Eu-ropean Surveillance System on Contact Allergies.
3) Monolaurin: While extremely gentle, we wanted a real clean, too. Monolaurin pro-vides effective antimicrobial protection. We even tossed in an antioxidant to help soothe irritated skin and glycerin for moisturization.
4) Clean. It’s a real clean, but your clothes will never have been cared for more kindly.
Who benefits most from Fawn & Launder?
1) Infants and Children ... because baby skin can be highly sensitive (studies have shown percentages as high as 44-51% of children reacting to at least one allergen), be-cause babies absorb anything topically applied more than adults, and because infant skin is newer and still building up its defenses. As a rule, anything that goes on or near baby’s skin should be very gentle yet still protect against micro-organisms.
2) Children and Adults with Dry Skin, Eczema, Atopic Dermatitis ... because treatment options can be limited for young patients and because topical steroids — while able to bring temporary relief from rashes and itching — are normally not recom-mended for long-term use even among adults.
3) Those with Clothing Contact Dermatitis or other Medically-Man-aged Skin Conditions ... because for many of these conditions, prevention is either as important as therapy or is the primary therapy.

Immediately, take two aspirins (or if you’re allergic, ibuprofen or an anti-inflammatory that your doctor recom-mends) and repeat after four hours. Oral steroids may be needed, too. An antihistamine can help prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Stay in a darkened room (even indoor lights can cause a photoreaction). Drink lots of water. Repetitively apply a soothing, reparative pure oil (sans all additives) like our new Know-It-Oil organic virgin coconut oil — it’s par-ticularly soothing as a cold compress. If there’s swelling, keep the oil in the refrigerator and use as a cool butter on the skin. For severe cases, an ice bath may be indicated as well.
Fried FrizzMy hair got so dry this summer. Any hair repair tips?
A great quick fix: apply Know-It-Oil — its fatty acids are natural to cell walls — then top off with a heavy layer of petroleum jelly. Wrap hair with a cool wet towel or, better still, plastic cling wrap or a shower cap for at least an hour.
Relative DangerIf you have someone in your family who had melanoma, you’re at risk of getting it yourself (as high as a 50% greater chance if it’s a sibling or par-ent). If skin cancer runs in your family, be extra conscientious about annual checkups with your dermatologist.
TIP! Why am I so “Heat”chy! Itching can be as common a bother in summer as bugs. Heat causes dryness, and micro-organisms — which flourish in the heat — love entering breaks in dry skin. When they do, scratching leads to more fissures and an itchy cycle begins. Why else? Heat and light can stimulate allergens like fragrance to act more powerfully, so even small doses that might normally be better tolerated can quickly cause rashes or darkening. Plus, heat can make sensitivities more pronounced — it’s why rashes tend to redden and itch more when it’s hot. It’s also why avoiding well-known triggers like dyes, preservatives and fragrances is especially important in the summer, even in your laundry detergent. When summer temperatures + excessive sweating combine, allergens in some detergents can leach out onto the skin ... and then it’s scratch central.

This is one big health nut. Its juice is a great electrolyte drink without the dyes and other additives of typical sports drinks. We derive monolaurin, a safe-yet-powerful antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal disinfectant from it. It’s rich in hormones and antioxidants. Its oil has natural antiviral properties and fatty acids native to skin, and is similar in chemical makeup to mother’s milk. Its clinical uses include the management of psoriasis, herpes and various types of dermatitis. It’s one of the healthiest fats around, being cholesterol- and trans fat-free, and able to balance cell membrane walls and prevent oxidation. And initial studies on its potential in HIV and cancer prevention are compelling. Prepped in the kitchen, dissected in the lab, smeared on skin, the humble coconut does a body good.
Oil in all: Our founding dermatologist-
dermatopathologist regularly prescribes VCO
to treat or support the therapy of various
conditions including psoriasis, herpes, atopic
dermatitis, aging, dryness, and bed sores.
It’s a must as a highly inert, gentle cleanser
for skin inflamed by a product or procedure
reaction. It’s a great antiviral gargle for sore
throats and mouth sores. It’s an ouchless
antiviral-antibacterial wash for wounds and
infected areas all over the body. And, with fatty
acids native to skin, it’s one of the single best
moisturizing ingredients around.
TIP!how to eat “skin”
We all know how good drinking lots of water is for our complexion, but how else can we eat “skin”? 1) Avoid inflammatory foods like chips, candy, and fruit drinks that you don’t squeeze fresh yourself; 2) Get complex: instead of simple white carbs, eat whole-grain pastas and breads, brown sugar and wild rice. 3) Get more omega 3 oils by eating fish like sardines and herring (also good because they’re small and don’t accumulate many toxins). 4) “Cocoisine”: Instead of canola or other vegetable oils, use virgin coconut oil for cooking and baking, or to drizzle on your salad.

To Serve & Pore-tect!“I bought this for my husband. His work as a police officer requires him to wear a bullet proof vest and this caused sweat acne breakouts. After one day of using this product his skin is smooth and clear. Wow!!!! Now his co-workers want to know the name of this product. I think it may become part of the uniform.”

TIP!
What Sweat Begets?More oil production and facial zits for
starters. Sweat can also trickle irritants
from hair products onto skin causing
acne or rashes. It can cause sweat acne
on the back, arms, thighs and butt. And
it can even cause pimple-like eruptions
when using some sunscreens. In addi-
tion to treating these various bumps, Id
Monolaurin Gel keeps skin cooler which,
besides being more comfortable, helps
arrest the big sweat threat.
MY BEST “FEND”Sarah writes“This is disgusting but true. In the midst of allergy season I was waking up everyday with dried blood all over the inside of my nose. The scabs hurt and when I removed them, my nose would be raw and gross inside. One day, I massaged a glob of my dear friend Boo Boo Balm up my nose before I went to bed. Not only did it stop the drying it also healed the wounds! I also put it on any wound to fend off infections and make it heal faster — since Boo Boo Balm I haven’t used Neosporin® ONCE. Boo Boo Balm takes the place of that and more without a doubt. I heart that stuff, I really do.”
One Boo-Bootiful Friendship! Some products lend themselves to fanaticism like our Armada sun + light screens and Superskin toners. Now our Grandma Minnie’s The Big, Brave Boo-Boo Balm seems headed toward cult status. Intended as an ouchless antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal disinfectant for kids’ “ow”ies, it’s morphed into a favorite of customers of all ages for a myriad more uses. Here, three urban gals from New York City and Chicago tell us some of the more creative uses they have for this little miracle balm.
DIVERSI-FLYLauren’s list includes“An amazing healer of traumatic burns like the one I got after a bad chemical peel. My 2-day cure for minor psoriasis outbreaks. For sun burn. To smooth down hair fly-aways. On scars. I slather it all over my face when I travel as planes seriously dry me out (sometimes the person sitting next to me stares when I apply. I don’t care). And I’m sure you didn’t see this one coming: I use it for scuffs on my leather boots!”
E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-GRisa uses her Boo-Boo Balm ...“To keep bug bites small and less itchy and to prevent scarring. For chronic dry, flaky skin especially if the skin’s broken and I can’t use steroid cream. Rosacea and eczema. When I’m about to get, or already have, a pimple. As a nighttime under-eye cream, lip balm, cuticle cream, stubborn-eyeliner remover, and unruly eyebrow tamer. It’s gentle enough to go ANYWHERE, So basically, I use it for everything! My boyfriend says I use Boo-Boo Balm like the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding uses Windex®.”

In their report “Skin Cancer Officially Considered an Epidemic in the United States”,2 Health News Digest highlights the complete range of our Armada Sun + Light products.
“A recently published study in The Archives of Dermatology confirms that non-melanoma skin cancer is, for the first time, considered an epidemic in the United States.” The study’s “incidence-based model
indicates that the prevalence of a skin cancer history is about 5 times higher than that of breast or prostate cancer and greater than the 31-year prevalence of all other cancers combined.” 3
With skin cancer at epidemic proportions, it’s time to break out the big guns. Of course, and we’re proud as punch of this, we’ve been locked and loaded for decades: we began making and testing sunscreens with the then shockingly high SPF of 30 in the late 1980s when SPF 15 was considered over the top — they’ve since come to include SPFs as high as 70-90. In 2002, Armada was one of the first sunblocks to prioritize high PFAs (protection against UVA) as well as SPF; was the first to include protection factors for Visible and Infrared Light rays; and was the first with measured protection against indoor light and heat sources — in this, they’re still unique.
Our sunscreens are some of the few tested in vivo (on human volunteers) as well as in vitro (in a laboratory) to confirm performance in actual-use
conditions. How legitimate are our studies? They’ve been published in peer-reviewed medical journals and even awarded in medical conventions — about as strong a validation of a battle plan as you can get.
If all this armament seems intimidating, remember that each Armada product is formulated with VMV’s unequaled standards of hypoallergenicity; that each is non-comedogenic, ultra-light and comfortable even in hot, humid weather — robust on the outside, gentle on the inside, as it were. This unique combination of scientific rigor, skin safety and comfort has made them some of our most popular products around the globe, with legions of skinthusiastic fans choosing Armada as their personal battalion against sun and light damage. It’s an honor to be skin your service.
