It seems to us that more andmore local and national carshows are abandoníng thepractÍce of fornal judgíngand are turning to popularchoíce or peer judging. Infact, a few shows have com-pletely elimínal-ed judgíngand awards; everyone justgets together for a day offellor¿shíp, mutual admira-Èion of vehícles, and a chanceto learn more abouË thehobby and its partícípants. This change is no doubt duein part to the burdensomeeffort requíred to assemblejudges and do the worknecessary for a full formaljudging program. I^Iíth thediversity of vehiclesnow being shown, fínding apanel of qualífÍed judgesÍs often very dÍfficult, and unless the judging isfair, impartíal, and expertlydone, no one is usuallysatisfied with the results.Itts Ëoo early to detect atrend, but peer judging, inwhich eritrants judge the carsín their own classes, maybe the ¡¿ave of Èhe fuËure.

EIIITflRIAIDIMINISHING RETURNS

Formal judging has much torecommend it, and we shouldall be appreciative of theaccomplishments of the variousnational and marque clubswhose members have laboredlong and hard t,o establishequítable judging rules andstandards. These effortshave done nuch to improvethe quality of car restoratíonover the last couple ofdecades. A completeabandonment of formaljudging mlght resulÈ 1nerosion of restoratíonstandards r,¡ithín a few years.

A year and a half ago Itold you about sufferingPorsche-overload (Ís theresuch a Ëhing?) on a trÍpto Southern Calífornia. As I recall, Ëhere werewords about more 911 | sthere than FirebírdTrans Amfs Ín the Midwest.I also remember theimpressíon of seeíng more356s on the road in oneday than in any oÈher placebesides at a PorscheParade.

For the fÍrst Ëime sincethat trip, some frfendlypeople in the AerospaceIndustry needed my helpin Southern Calíforniaagain. This tírne I rm

suffering car-over-load.

llhere do all these carscome f6rn? IÍhere doall these people gã allthat money? llhat is goingon here?l? There are moresËrange exotic/odd/unusual/neat cars per square acrein this part of the U.S.of A than Irve ever seenanyplace e1se. (Thereare more neat street carsñ-aty square acre ofGermany youtd care to pick'buÈ that only takes care ofone of those fíve catagoríes.)Instead of giving you alaundry li-st of how many911s, 928s, 944s, etc.there are clogging thef reeways, I | 11 sirnply saythat ín one 24 hour periodI sar^r SIX 911 CabrioletslHave we got that many ínthe whole ståÈe of Missouríyet? These guys get real cute too.Theyrll line up all thesports cars in one placemost of the tíme. (Probablyto gíve the onmers thatf alse-sense-of -securityfeeling about door dings.)If it's busy theyrll evenhave a ro¡¿ of Porsches, arow of Corvettes, and anttltaliantt row. Ãt a rítzbeachsíde hotel last week-end, I saw the 911 rowstarting off with four930s1 It rs unbelievable!I think Íf you lived outhere yourd ¡+ant to drivea Skoda. That's the only\474y youf d have somethíngdifferent.

Lest you think I suffermy car-overload feelingsonly l-n bar parking lots,I have to tel1 you thatrsnot the case. It actuallyhappened at RiversídeRaceway at a Trans Am

race, where I spent as muchtíme in that parking lotlookíng at cars as I didat track side watchÍng theraces.

The races were alot of funthough. Trans Am, SuperVee ChampionshÍp, andRabbít Bilst,eín Cupraces. You know. Thesame kind of races theyhave in Kansas City all thetíme.

14

But the spectat, orts cars.trlhat a treat. There aremore mean looking BMI,Ishere than in Munich. AndRX7s. There canrt be astock RX7 ín SouthernCalifornia. They're alltricked up. 5OO SLs,pristine 20 year oldMustangs, Cadíllac Círn-maron ttRallyett cars.Just everything.

trrlhat do you suppose itËakes t.o create thisautomotive smorgasbord ?

From my observation, íttakes these things. Lotsof money; lots of sun-shine; and not a wholelot of sense. That lastitem is the only thingI can think of that ¡¿oulda1low one to hop out of hisor her Porsche and leaveËhe car and keys to thevalet persons. Lordknor,rs the practice woulddry up fast if they letme valet park for ar¿eekend.

Entry ínto the Group

Upon arriving at the evenÈ site early SaturdayafÈernoon, I sought out. one Frank tlagner, a rumoredleader of subject group. This is a dangerous man

- he has the rest of the members of this covenbelievine that his car can ansl¡/er questÍ-ons andactually wriËe articles for the club publication.

I complimented trIagner (nee Vagner) on hisartÍcles in the publÍcation, and lied about howmuch I enjoyed them. (At no tÍrne duríng thisconversatÍon did I tell him who I was or what Idrove. )

I next found one Chuck Olenyk, editor of saidpublicatíon, and repeated the same drivel to him. This ís the character thaË quoted P.J. OrRourketswords conparing tlne 944/Corvette. Itts good forus thaÈ nobody reads OrRourke or Olenyli.

Probably the most difficult part of the ¡reekendwas telling then how much I liked their cars - ÍÈwas simply superb actÍng.

Next, I rigged a drawing for two bottles of cheapw in e. trIhen subject group won them, you would havethoughË someone just gave them a new 928 - they wereso excÍted, and therefore in a reeeptive mood formore infiltration on my parÈ.

I sat down at the table with them, and begandropping names - expecÍally the double-agenË conver-sions from my immediate area: Bauman, Johannsen,& Kjoller.Subiects Contacted
