Putting the ‘ART’ inrtificial Christmas trees
rtificial Christmastrees have come a long way
in recent years. There is a vari-ety of trends available today when selecting a tree that suits your personal needs and tastes.
LIGHTS: Whether they are multi-coloured, white or twinkling, the options for creat-ing different looks with lights are endless. Try some of the new options that save time while decorating, such as a pre-lit tree that comes with the lights already strung, or the one-plug tree which lights the entire tree with one pole-to-pole electrical connection - eliminating the need to search for electrical plugs in each sec-tion of the tree.
SHAPE: Trees today can be narrow, full, tall or short and accommodate different size
spaces and ceiling heights. Remember to consider the height of the tree with a tree stand and topper on when selecting the tree that meets your room requirements. Self-shaping trees are also a great option, as they’re ready to go out of the box and maintain a full and realistic look, allowing for more time spent decorat-ing.
STYLE: While traditional Christmas trees continue to be popular, those looking to step outside the box have options with the assortment of spiral, topiary and berry-adorned trees available. Trees today also come in different colours and branches are made of different materials, providing options for textures and overall look.

Canadians get excited for the first snow-fall of the year and it’s no surprise why. From snow angels to snowmen to the first snow fight of the season, the change in weather marks the start of a fun-filled win-ter for many families. However, when fac-ing treacherous roads, driveways and side-walks, it’s important to remove snow and ice as safely and quickly as possible. Get prepared for the season of snow with these tips:
OUTFIT YOUR CAR TO OUTFIT YOUR CAR TO STAY A STEP AHEADSTAY A STEP AHEAD
You’ve likely learned that mittens are not the best option for brushing off a snow-laden car. Keeping a heavy-duty snow brush or emergency telescopic shovel in your trunk during the entire winter season –expected snow fall or not—is a good idea.
MINIMIZE HEAVY LIFTINGMINIMIZE HEAVY LIFTING
A tough job can be made easier with the right snow thrower. Opting for a snow shovel on a wheel, such as the manual Sno Wovel, cuts down the heavy lifting. Another great option are the specially designed ergonomic snow shovels. A bonus is that with no fumes or noise—it’s a good choice for the environment as well as your neigh-bours.

Although a warm fire can be a nice dis-traction from a wintery day outdoors, remove snow right after it has fallen—be-fore it has a chance to melt and freeze or be packed down.
KEEP FAMILY ANDKEEP FAMILY ANDPETS SAFEPETS SAFE
Keep your snow-covered garden and lawn safe from harmful chemicals this winter. Try a de-icer such as Eco Traction. Made from all-natural volcano mineral, it provides better traction than sand, and doesn’t hurt children or pets if accidentally ingested

Clear the driveway in no time with an electric snow thrower. The re are a range of styles and sizes to suit any budget.

S4 Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 20, 2011 - The Morning Star
When the whirlwind of Christmas preparations begins a few weeks before the holidays, it’s not always easy to be ready in time. Have you ever thought about creating a calen-dar for a successful Christmas time?
During the fi rst week of December, it’s time to get outside and install all your Christmas lights if you haven’t done so already. This is also the time to write and mail Christmas cards to family and friends. The next day, sort out all your inte-rior decorations. Listening to Christmas music is a great way to conjure some Christmas spirit — it’s not too early to get in the mood. Start to shop for gifts if you haven’t yet begun. The second weekend in December is the time to make
desserts that can be frozen: pies, cookies, and meat pies are sea-sonal musts. This is also a good time to make the all important steamed Christmas pudding, if that’s a part of your family’s tradition. You can also scout out where you’d like to buy your real Christmas tree this year. If you’re prepared to make sure it stays well-watered, it’s fi ne to put it up and decorate it now.
During the week of the fi fteenth, you can order from your butcher the turkey, lamb, or other main dish for your Christmas meal. Finalize the menu and select the wines and spirits that you’ll need. If you’re hosting Christmas this year, organize the furniture and make the hors d’oeuvres on Christmas Eve day. Early on the twenty-fi fth, set the table and take out your frozen baked goods and dishes to thaw. Light a fi re and some candles to create an inviting atmosphere. Because you planned ahead, all you have to do now is sit back and enjoy the occasion!

THE CHRISTMAS TREE history, care, history, care, and safetyand safety
While evergreen trees were a part of Celtic pagan win-ter solstice rituals hundreds of years ago, the tradition of the Christmas tree as we know it today dates back to the sixteenth century. The fi rst mention of an indoors decorated Christmas tree was in Strasbourg, France, around the year 1605.
At that time, they weren’t yet embellished with lights, but in the mid-seventeenth century people started trimming them with small candles. These, of course, were replaced with elec-tric bulbs at the beginning of the
twentieth century. Variations, such as outside lights and artifi -cial trees, also appeared around this time. From 1920, Christmas trees gradually became a custom in large urban centres, appear-ing in the countryside a decade later.
To keep a real Christmas tree looking good over the holi-days, put the trunk in water as
soon as it is brought inside. Remember to shake it well to remove any
dry needles before you bring it inside! The base of the trunk should be re-cut on the diagonal to remove any dry resin that would interfere
with water absorption. Once the tree is in water, ensure that the water level doesn’t get too low.
As the old saying goes, bet-ter safe than sorry: make sure your real or artifi cial tree is far from any heat sources, such as radiators and wood stoves, and always choose decorative tree lights that have been approved by the Canadian Standards Association. It goes without saying that all lights should be switched off before going to bed or when you leave your home, even if it’s only for an hour. You don’t want Christmas time to turn into a disaster!

Where Dreams Come True...
It’s great to give beautifully wrapped gifts to our loved ones, but who wants to waste paper? Perhaps the solution to this problem can be found in our closets, where all sorts of materials can be discovered and salvaged. Just search around and you’re sure to fi nd something to cre-ate gift wrappings as elegant as they are original. They’re also eco-friendly, which is a real treat for both giver and receiver.
Sort out some fabric scraps to wrap your gift boxes with; glue the fabric in place or sew gift bags with draw strings. Use brightly coloured or pat-terned fabrics for a more festive touch. You could also reuse fruit baskets that you paint with gold or silver or another seasonal colour; decorate them with ribbon or a small evergreen branch for a yuletide look. Baskets are perfect for holding homemade jams, and the recipient will be delighted as much with their presentation as with the anticipation of savouring the contents.
A pretty, unused tea towel is just the thing for wrap-ping up all those great kitchen gadgets or homemade baked treats; hold the towel together with clothes pins
and ribbons. And while you’re at it, why not include a set of Christmas themed cookie cut-ters? A gourmet chef will adore this thought-
ful gesture.
Bubble wrap is another useful material. To
please a kid with a futuristic-looking gift wrapping, cover a box with bright tissue
paper and then with bubble wrap, fi nishing it off with a metallic deco-ration — an old neck-lace of silvery or golden pearls would be perfect. Or wrap a present with the comic section of the news-paper; your teenager will then have something to do during the slow moments on Christmas morning!
Children will have lots of fun helping you decorate gifts with materials you have on
hand. Who knows, maybe salvaging materials will become a family tradition!

MALL survival guide for the
Holidays
Love the holidays, but hate the holiday shopping? Ho-ho-hold the panic, you can do this. Learn to conquer the mall with these handy survival tips:
Stay cool: When you’re
packed into a crowded mall jostling from store to store, that parka and fur-hat combo will have you melting like a snow-man in July. Dress in layers, leave the toque in the car and make use of mall lockers or coat checks to help keep you stay comfortable and mobile.
Make a list; Take a
cue from Santa and put it in writ-
ing. Before you step foot into the holiday mall chaos, know what you
need and where to get it.
Timing is everything;Saturday is still a terrible
time to shop with three kids in tow. While malls will be busy consistently this time of year, a Tuesday morning is going to be a lot less painful than a Saturday afternoon.
Santa’s watchingSo don’t be naughty. Holiday
shopping can become stressful – if you let it. Try to remember the true spirit of gift giving and avoid getting into a fistfight over the hottest toy or cutting in line for the mall Santa.

in HOLIDAYgifts for kidsWHAT’S HOT
Are you feeling out of the loop on what to get the kids this holiday season? Stay on top of trends and ensure success with these easy tips:
Personalized GiftsProducts with their names on it
are all the rage. Waterbottles, back-packs, cellphone covers, hockey helmets, t-shirts – the options are endless.
Gifts the whole family can enjoy
Family time is precious so look for
activities that everyone can do together. Try a fun board game, a popular DVD collection for movie nights, or a craft or building set.
Gifts that tap into their creativityCraft toys have surged in popularity recently. The toy market
offers a large selection of make-your-own products now with everything from jewelry kits to science experiments to personal-
ized stickers with instruc-tions online.
Gifts that are made in Canada
There is a move-
ment among consum-
ers to buy locally, and yet did you know that less than 1% of toys sold in Canada are actually made here? There is indeed a limited selection, but do keep trying. One exception, for example, is StickerYou, a new company based in Toronto that is exciting kids with its innovative new line of Make + Print craft toys. This gift supports Canadian craft-manship and is surely bound to please.
Items that are parent tested and approvedTake the guessing out of gift giving. Lots of sites offer feed-
back directly from parents, where you can check up on a product before you buy it, and even get some new ideas.

S14 Gift Guide 1 Sunday, November 20, 2011 - The Morning Star
Sometimes unpleasant surprises come to haunt us after the Christmas holidays, such as frighteningly large credit card state-ments or a few extra pounds. Finding a solution to the credit card bill is a little more complicated, but here are some tips to avoid holiday weight gain:
We eat more at a buffet, choosing for ourselves, than when served a complete meal on one plate.
Try not to come to the table starved. Serve some vegetable soup or salad before the main course, and drink a large glass of water before sitting down to eat.
Try your best to avoid hors d’oeuvres. Those made with fl aky pastry are very high in calories and fat. Skip the creamy dip on the veggie tray as often as you can.
Choose your foods carefully. Avoid the empty calories of chips, pastries, and fried foods; opt for nutritious foods that will leave you feeling full and energized, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats.
Stay away from buffets. It has been proven that we eat more if we can choose items one at a time rather than hav-ing a complete meal served to us on a plate. If the buffet is unavoidable, why not ask a friend to put together a nutri-tious plate for you?
Drink with moderation. Alcohol is high in calories, so drink slowly and alternate with low-calorie non-alcoholic drinks.
Eat slowly and breathe between bites. Adopt the rhythm of the slowest eater at your table.
Eat light meals in between social events. Opt for fruits and vegetables, which are often under-represented in Christmas meals.
Decline a second serving. When seconds are offered, take a breath and a sip of water, and check in with yourself to see if you’re feeling full.
Exercise. During the holidays we tend to eat more and exer-cise less. In fact, it’s important to keep moving when we’re eating more.
Sleep! Lack of sleep deprives us of the necessary energy to resist temptations and excess.
