How to manage anxiety

Anxiety can impact your day-to-day life in massive ways, but there are tools you can use to manage

and control your anxiety. There are also a number of things you can do if these tools don't work,

including seeking help from people who can design a unique treatment plan for you.

This could be for you if...

you experience anxiety

you want to find tools to manage anxiety so it doesn't impact your life

you're constantly stressed

you have trouble relaxing

you have panic attacks

What can I do now?

Exercise is a great way to release stress

Try some new relaxation techniques

Talk to your GP about the stuff that’s worrying you

What to do about anxiety

Anxiety, worry, fear – when they’re getting in your way you need to do something about them. It sucks if

you can’t be everything you want to be because you’re paralysed by worry. But you can do something

about it.

There are a ton of things you can do to manage and deal with anxiety. Some of them will work for you

better than others.

Top tips for tackling anxiety

Things to do that have been shown to help include:

Exercise. You might not feel like it, but getting sweaty five times a week makes people less anxious,

stressed and depressed.

Self talk. Learning self-talk that'll help you combat negative thoughts that are going through your head.

Check out our stuff on self-talk.

Practical stuff. Looking at practical things you've got to deal with and knock them over one at a time –

avoiding things feeds anxiety.

Build a toolkit. Getting tools like deep breathing and relaxation techniques that'll help when things get too

much.

Try to focus your thoughts. Find out more about meditation and mindfulness techniques.

Check your thinking. Study your negative thought patterns so you can see when things start to get out of

control, and challenge them when they start .

Share carefully. Trying not to unload your worries on people who are worriers too.

Need something stronger?

Sometimes you can’t beat this on your own – and that’s why there are professionals who study mental

health for years to lend a hand. Find people to help you work on anxiety – that means seeing a doctor for a

referral to a psychologist or other mental health professional, who work with people on stuff like this all

the time.

That kind of help gives you a massive head start and will help you get through it easier and more quickly.

8/ 'Mental Health Act 1986':

Better Health Channel

Summary

The 'Mental Health Act 1986' states that every involuntary patient must be given a written statement of their rights. If

they need help to exercise those rights, the patient can ask someone of their choice to assist them - perhaps a staff

member, case manager, friend, relative, lawyer or doctor.

If you are an involuntary patient under the Mental Health Act, you have rights. You should be aware of these rights

and know who to contact if you need help.

Your basic rights

You have the right to:

Appeal to the Mental Health Review Board

A second opinion

Legal advice

Contact people by letter or telephone

Complain about your treatment.

Involuntary patients

If you have been admitted as an involuntary patient to a mental health service, it is because a doctor believes that:

You appear to be mentally ill

Your mental illness requires immediate treatment

It is necessary for your health or safety or for the protection of other people

You have refused or are unable to consent to necessary treatment

There is no less restrictive way for you to receive adequate treatment.

Within 24 hours of admission, a psychiatrist from the mental health service will examine you to decide if all these

reasons apply to you. If they do, you must remain an involuntary patient.

Community treatment orders

Your psychiatrist may decide that you can receive the treatment you need in the community and place you on a

community treatment order. However, you are still an involuntary patient.

Mental Health Review Board

The Mental Health Review Board is an independent tribunal that:

Hears appeals from patients who want to be discharged.

Reviews all patients periodically to decide if they can be discharged.

Your right to appeal to the Board

It is your right to appeal to the Board at any time. Whether or not you appeal, the Board will review you within eight

Hi there,

Tomorrow, on Australia Day, we will mark the second anniversary of the Every Australian Counts

campaign.

That's two years since we began working together to change the lives of people with disability, their

families and carers, with the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

And what a two years it has been. Here's the very short version of how far we've come.

The Federal Government has committed to introducing the NDIS, five launch sites

around the country have been funded and, at the end of last year, the NSW

Government came on board to ensure the NDIS would be fully rolled out across the

state. That's because of you.

Now the Senate Standing Committee on Community Affairs is considering the

laws that will govern the NDIS.

Over summer the committee called for submissions on the legislation and you

responded, with more than 1300 people saying why Australia desperately needs the NDIS. Thank you to all

who made a submission - it's a big achievement!

But the new year also brings new challenges. We still want to see all states and territories come to an

agreement with the Federal Government on how the NDIS will be rolled out.

This year we'll all be working hard to get every state and territory leader to get on board and make the

NDIS national. And the coming Federal election this year is not far from our thoughts either.

Together we can do this - we've come so far already.

So help make it national by asking your friends, family and colleagues to support the NDIS today. You can

forward on the email below my signature, or you can use the form on our website.

The more voices we bring to the party, the harder we will be to ignore.

Let's make the NDIS national in 2013.

Thank you for your support.

Hi there,

I've just decided to support the Every Australian Counts campaign for a National Disability Insurance

Scheme (NDIS), and I thought you would like to join with me.

Australians with a disability, their families and carers deserve a fair go.

The Federal Government has committed to the NDIS but we also need every state and territory leader on

board.

Will you join me to help make the NDIS national in 2013? Find out more at

10/ The Butterfly Foundation:

About us

The Butterfly Foundation represents all people affected by eating disorders – a person

with an eating disorder, their family and their friends. As a leading national voice in supporting their needs,

Butterfly highlights the realities of seeking treatment for recovery, and advocates for improved services

from both government and independent sources.

Butterfly operates a national helpline, which is staffed by counsellors experienced in assisting with eating

disorders. It also provides a wide range of facilities for service providers and recovery groups.

Because Butterfly recognises that eating disorders often arise from poor body image, it delivers a range of

Positive Body Image workshops to schools and workplaces through its education program. It has a strong

media presence to raise awareness of Butterfly’s perspective in community debates about body image and

eating disorders.

Throughout its work Butterfly emphasises the critical importance of prevention and early intervention

strategies in limiting the development of, and suffering from, negative body image and eating

disorders. To expand knowledge in this field The Butterfly Research Institute commissions academic

research projects and funds PhD research scholarships.

Butterfly is committed to collaboration across the sector, and presently co-ordinates the National Eating

Disorders Collaboration (NEDC) for the Australian Department of Health and Ageing.

11/ Breaking the Cycle of Depression and Anxiety:

Breaking the Cycle of Depression and Anxiety

A new DVD for parents with mental illness, launched on 15 January, will help them to be open and talk

about their mental health issues with their children.

15 January 2013

Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler today launched a new DVD for parents with mental

illness across the country.

Mr Butler said over a million Australian children live in a household where at least one parent has a mental

illness and this was a significant indicator that a child may grow up with their own mental health

challenges.

“It is estimated that up to 23 per cent of children live in a household where mental illness is experienced

and these children obviously face some unique challenges,” Mr Butler said.

“We know that these children are at greater risk of developing a mental health or substance abuse issue.”

“We’re encouraging parents to be open and talk about their mental health issue with their children and the

DVD is designed to help start the conversation.”

“Many parents find it tough to talk about their experience of depression and anxiety with their children, yet

talking about the problem helps the whole family to manage together.”

Funded by the Australian Government, the DVD, called Family Focus, is based on an approach developed

by US-based Dr William Beardslee, an internationally acclaimed specialist in mental illness prevention.

It was developed in collaboration with Australian psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses,

occupational therapists, social workers, researchers and Australian parents and children with lived

experience of parental depression/anxiety.

Mr Butler said it was the first time the Australian Government had provided such a resource.

“This work will build upon the previous achievements of the COPMI national initiative, including the

‘Dads do it for your kids’ campaign, which commenced in April 2012.”

The DVD is available for free from the Family Focus website

12/ Graeme Cowan:

The mental health and profit correlation all leaders should know about.....

I was very fortunate to speak at a science conference in Puerto Rico on “Work/life integration for a thriving academic

career” in December, and then took the opportunity to go on a wonderful 7 day Caribbean cruise with my fiancée

Karen. Although it was the first cruise for both of us, and we were a little hesitant, it turned out to be a wonderful way to

recharge the batteries.

Top 5 Regrets of the Dying

One of the books I read whilst on the high seas was The top 5 Regrets of the Dying by Australian

palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware. Through spending the last 3-12 weeks with thousands of dying

people, she observed 5 common regrets:

1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

2. I wish I didn't work so hard.

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier.

I found it fascinating because so much of my journey and research over the last 7 years has been about discovering

what daily actions we can take to enhance our wellbeing and mood. It seems that the clarity from impending death

about the essential components of a fulfilling life, has been proven by scientific research.

These are some practical steps we can take to address workplace stress and life regrets right now. Click here to
