VM Newspaper – Official VM 2015 Magazine „Can you hear the beat?“The Magazine will be distributed in Denmark at relevant events like Icetölt in Frederikshavn and Silkeborg, Worldtölt in Odense, The Hest og Rytter fair in Herning and at local shows and competitions during spring 2015. All local clubs will receive copies and it will be offered for distribution free of charge to sport shops, kiosks, for libraries and other places interested.In July it will be placed locally in all types of shops - mainly within 50 km of Herning.The magazine will have a competition for spectators at VM in Herning, which will help to ensure a long life span for it.

The story of a beloved horse We hear about the Icelandic horse qualities dating back to the sagas, which tells how the Vikings valued and loved their best horses. Just as we do today. In the Nordic coun-tries were initially horses from the East, Scotland and Ire-land. Around 800 AD, a few horses brought by the Viking ships to Iceland, as especially Norwegians settled there. Imports of horses to Iceland continued until approximately 1200s, and since they have been preserved and pure bred. In Iceland, the horse was used for centuries as a means of

transport, and in the 1900s began the export of horses to such countries as Denmark, for use in agriculture. In the 19th century Icelanders began using it for competitions and breeding evaluations. Since the early 1970s, the number of horses in Northern Europe and the United States have exploded. Today there are approximately 70.000 horses in Iceland and 170.000 worldwide.

AsmallhorsewithfivegaitsMany would like to call the Icelandic horse a pony due to its size, which is approximately 132-145 cm. But it’s a horse. The Old Norse word was “hestr” and it still says horse in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Icelandic. And it has spe-cial properties. In addition to the walk, trot and canter (as most other breeds), the Icelandic horses have two extra gaits, tölt and pace.

Tölt is smooth The pleasant gait where the rider sits quiet in the saddle, is the main reason for Icelandic horse’s popularity. It is a four-beat gait with the same movement pattern as a walk. The best horses can tölt from walking speed up to whizzing galloping speed. Since medieval times the best tölters have been in high demand. It is still is today. Pace is when the horse flies Pace is a two beat gait, which should preferably be dis-played at high speed with a floating movement. The quick version is called flying pace. Flying pace is used for racing, breeding and judging in the sport fivegait competition.

SportRiding=tölt,fourgait,fivegaitandpaceraceWorld Championships, Nordic Championships, national championships and club competitions. Sport riding in the Icelandic horse world is popular. You compete in pace race on a long, straight path and various tölt and gait dis-ciplines on a 250 meter oval track. Trekking which shows the horse’s versatility, is also a popular discipline. The 3-5 judges in the middle of the oval track and the score from 0-10 to include the horses beat, pace, form and movement. At World Championships only the most difficult classes are ridden. Each country selects the participants on the basis of their results. Most riders at the World Championships are professionals.

Breeding is popular All breeders dream of the perfect horse, where the com-bination of riding abilities and exterior goes up to a higher level. These horses make it to World Championships, to be crowned as World Champions in different age groups among both stallions and mares. Offspring evaluations are also extremely important. It is FEIF (association of countries that breed Icelandic horses), that establish guidelines for awards and offspring assessment.

THE ICELANDIC HORSEIn the Nordic countries around 205.000 Icelandic horses are registered at present and these strong horses are very popular among both youngsters and grown-ups, men and women alike for cross-country activities, leisure-riding and competitions.

The Icelandic horse is patient, adaptable, friendly, uncomplicated and has an eager yet kind spirit. Originally bred as a riding and working horse for the Icelandic farmers, it has become an ex-cellent all-around family horse for us today. At the same time, the diversity within the breed is enormous. You see it instantly in the amazing variety of colors within a herd, and your can definitely feel it when you start riding them. Each Icelandic horse has its very individual character – you can truly find the perfect fit for everyone. All the six Nordic countries Icelandic horse associations are members of the International Iceland horse federation, FEIF. Within FEIF, a total of 19 countries organize their projects, rulebooks and activities with NIF playing an important part. “NIF” stands for “Nordic Icelandic horse federation” and it is this union of the six Nordic countries Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, that jointly organizes VM2015.
