ANTONIO VIVALDI

• Born on March 4th, 1678 in Venice, Italy

• The Baroque Era- emerging knowledge and new ideas

• Ordained priest before following music

• Extra-Musical Ideas

A LITTLE BACKGROUND…

• Musical Technique• Represents something

other than music• Prominent in the Romantic

Era- about 150 years after the Baroque Era!

• EXAMPLE: a composer may write a string part to sound like trees rather than simply writing to the accepted musical form of the era.

EXTRA MUSICAL IDEA

• Arguably one of his most famous works

• Enlarged musical spectrum by including visual experiences, like nature and the changing of seasons

• Creates certain moods in music- one per season

• Not well received by critics of the time due to the innovative techniques used

“FOUR SEASONS”

• Scientific discoveries by Isaac Newton and Galileo spark the enlightenment

• Artistic Science begins to emerge

• Vivaldi, strove to scientifically represent the human emotions in an objective and rational way

VIVALDI’S MUSIC & THE BAROQUE ERA

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons consists of twelve

movements, three per season, each

containing their own specific mood.

• Musicians relied completely on employment from wealthy patrons, state officials, or Church powers

• Accepted musical elements of the time: homophony, orchestral and vocal music, and the inclusion of the keyboard

• Vivaldi successfully assimilated to the Baroque compositional style while introducing his audience to new, inspirational forms of musical expression- a true Baroque artist.
