When coming to Lake Atitlan, making San Pedro your temporary place of residence is a good idea. While Panajachel also has lots of restaurants and activities, the noise, traffic and street sellers will make you feel the stress of being in a big city. Choos-ing a more relaxed place seems logical.

Other villages can be quiet as well, maybe a little bit too quiet... Only Pana-jachel, San Pedro and San Marcos can offer some-what of a nightlife. Other villages are great to visit, but a little too sleepy to spend many days there. So, while staying in San Pedro, don’t be shy to take a lancha to Santiago, where you can see the life of a big town. Santiago, with its 40 thousands inhabitants, is the biggest town around lake Atitlan. A 30 minute boat ride leaving from the “other dock”, aka the Santiago dock, by La Piscina, will bring you there as if you were on a cruise. The ride should cost 15Q, but it always depends on who’s collecting. Don’t be surprised if you are asked for 25Q. The best way to avoid this is to get directly on the boat and have the

perfect change, give it to them like you already know the price. Avoid the ticket sellers at the dock, they are overcharging. Another village, perfect for a day trip, is San

Juan. You can actually walk there, or take a Tuktuk for 10Q. San Juan is a nice Maya vil-lage with a speciality in “cultural” tourism. You can learn how to weave, or attend a Maya cer-emony.Going to Panajachel, for shopping is also a good day trip. If you feel like it, try the zip line at the Nature Center. If you have time, a collectivo can bring you to San Antonio Polopo, an-other interesting village to visit.

If you want to see a vil-lage with almost no tourism, my suggestion is Tzununa. You can go by lancha, or hire Atitlan Adventure to go visit the water falls. In conclusion, enjoy the great lifestyle of San Pe-dro, but don’t be shy to go looking around. Don’t forget to come back to the place where the food is great, the bars are fun and nightlife is wild.

When I was young, a long time ago, we could only imagine how much fun it would to be on a lake, hanging to a rope balancing on a water ski. Only the rich kids had that opportunity. We spent summer in our par-ent backyard, lucky enough to have an above ground swim-ming pool. Actually, some of the neighbors envied us. We envied the rich kids who had a boat. By the age of 20, I was lucky enough to have some of those as friends. The son of a funeral home owner, the daughter of a chartered accountant, yeah, we could have a small taste at luxury. On a beautiful summer day, we would get together at there summer house and get the boat out for a ride. Gas wasn’t so expensive then.

Water skiing for us was the ultimate. It’s like skiing but without the snow and the cold that comes with it. In the boat, we all had a beer in our

hand, it was be-fore those laws against drink-ing and driving. Damn laws...We used two skies. We weren’t good enough to keep our balance on one ski only. It was fun any-way. And then came

the donut. No knowledge necessary to get behind the boat at high speed. The challenge was to not let go of the handles. Impossible. I still have the memories of those epic flights and dangerous acrobatic landing. Times have changed. Most of you probably tried water donuts before. But in case the child inside still wants a rush of adrenaline, you can now try it here, on lake Atitlan. For only Q 50, you’ll have 20 min-utes of pure excitement on one of the most beautiful lake in the world. Get a group together then go to La Piscina San Pedro for reservation.

One of the great thing about Guatema-la is that you can hire a shuttle for the whole day, go an hundred of kilometer away and the total cost will be the one of a 30 minutes taxi ride in your home town. For 800Q a day, you can hire a private shuttle to Guatemala city and back or for 1200Q you can even go to Monterrico (one way). Obviously, you can also take the collective service that leave San Pedro every morn-ing to go to Antigua and from there make a connection to any other destination.

For all your travel needs, you can trust our friend Cecilia and Antonio at the Maya Tzutujil travel agency. They are as professional as can be with great eth-ics and a will to satisfy you. Antonio is

a great driver, know Guatemala very well and drive safely.

They also can organise for you all your transporta-tion needs like bus tickets, airplane ticket or shuttles. Their office is also a Post Office where you can buy

I have a to do list. Some-where on the bottom of it, it say “never go horseback riding again”. Maybe I’m just a com-plainer, but I just can’t stand some of the aspects of horseback riding. First, lets be honest, it stink. OK, some of you may like horses so much that your think they smell good. To each its own.I understand horses have four speeds. The slow one, the walk, the sec-ond one the trot, I don’t know the third one, and the forth one the gallop. I’m personally fine with the walk and the gallop. But that middle one, the trot, I just can’t stand it at all. Ah a man, I have certain component in my anatomy that don’t enjoy at all to be thrown frantically in all directions. It

hurts !Last time I went horse-back riding, my shoes were bigger that the stirrup. That mean that when it would have been a good time for me to put my weight on my legs for my ass to not be on the saddle, I basically couldn’t. You can imagine the re-sult. So, when you decide to go horseback riding be-cause horses are so beau-tiful or any crazy reason

you want, just make sure your shoes fit in the stirrup. Obviously, I’m exaggerating my expe-rience a bit for dramatic reason. You’ll have a great time going to the beach or the mountain on your horse in San Pedro. Don’t get influenced by my negative at-titude and go for it.

Those of you who went to La Piscina during there special Semana Santa Fri-day BBQ know that the Rising Minds raffle was a huge suc-cess. Thanks to the gen-erosity of La Piscina, El Barrio, Buddha Bar, Clover, Lino shoes, Johanna’s, Alegre, D’ Noz, and Le Jardin many raffle winners went home with big smiles on their faces.

The raffle successfully raised, 1,980Q, enough to help fund projects such as a recycled bottle built classroom and a tire playground struc-ture that local mothers are building, alongside with volunteers, in Chacap, a hamlet of Santa Clara.

Much thanks to the outstanding volun-

teers, Kate, Dona, and Charlie, for orga-nizing what we hope is the first of many successful fund-raising raffles.

The response from busi-ness owners who were willing to donate the prizes for the raffle was overwhelmingly gener-ous. We, at Rising Minds, feel very fortunate to live in the town with such a great spirit of coopera-tion among businesses. Along with San Pedro’s

Obviously, it is a work in progress and we hope to make it more interactive. For now, it’s a da-tabase of all the articles that were published in the Viva San Pedro magazine and some elec-

tronic version of the magazine. It also feature our advertisers. Soon, it will give you the links to the their web sites.
