Osteoporosis is a major public health issue due to its prevalence and is characterized by both low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration, increased bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk. Vitamin D: Bones and Beyond: 30 mins Christian Girgis Endocrinologist; Senior Lecturer, Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney Osteoporosis in adults is often multifactorial. It’s prevention and treatment relies on optimising physical activity, reducing exposure to medications that impair bone, and ensuring adequate nutrition that include calcium and vitamin D. This talk will highlight the effects of calcium and vitamin D in the adult skeleton and will also touch on the extra-skeletal effects of vitamin D that has been gaining increasing interest in recent years. Vitamin D, Coronavirus, and other Non-Bone Diseases: 30 mins Prof Peter Ebeling AO Endocrinologist, Head of the Department of Medicine, Monash Health Scientific research is steadily revealing the role that this important substance potentially plays in modulating chronic disease. Recently, the importance of Vit D has been revealed regarding susceptibility to respiratory tract infections and hence Covid 19. There are even possible links with regard to cancer risk. Prof Ebeling is a leading expert on Vit D, he will describe some of the fascinating evidence and clinical implications. Can I Get Enough Vitamin D from Diet Alone?: 30 mins Melanie McGrice Fertility and Prenatal Dietitian; Media Spokesperson, Dietitian’s Association of Australia Throughout life, vitamin D plays an important role in skeletal and possibly extra- skeletal health.
