tility rates are highest. Unless there are further de-clines in the age-specific birth rates the projectedchanges in the number of young women will tend toraise the future number of births.

Provisional data by place of occurrence showthat the birth rate declined in all geographic divisionsbetween 1972 and 1973 and the number of births de-clined in all except the Mountain Division. The birthrate declined in all States except Georgia artd thenumber of births declined in all but nine States.

NATURAL INCREASE

Natural increase (the excess of births over deaths)resulted in the net addition of 1,164,000 persons tothe population of the United States during 1973. Therate of natural increase was 5.6 persons per 1,000

Table B. DEATHS AND DEATH RATES, BY

0population compared with 6.2 for 1972. This is less;han one-half of the high rates of about 16 per 1,000population observed in the mid- 1950ts. Since thedeath rate has been quite stable, the decline in therate of natural increase has been due almost en-tirely to the decline in the birth rate.

DEATHSThere were approximately 1,977,000 deaths to

residents of the United States during 1973, 15,000more than in 1972. However, the protiisional deathrate for 1973 was 9.4 per 1,000 population, the sameas the rate recorded for 1972.

The usual pattern of the highest death rates]ccurring in the winteq and the lowest in the summerwas evident again in 1973. However, the months oflecember and January had substantially lower deathrates than the corresponding months of the previousyear (table B).

~aior Causes of Death

The 10 leading causes of death shown in table Ceach had the same rank for 1973 as for 1972 exceptfor Cirrhosis of liver (9 in 1972) and Certain causesof mortality in early infancy (7 in 1972).

Cause-of-death ranking is based on the List of69 Selected Causes of Death, adapted from one of

●the special lists for mortality tabulations recom-mended by the World Health Organization for use withthe Eighth Revision of the International Classification

of Diseases. Two group titles—Major cardiovasculardiseases and Symptoms and ill-defined conditions—are not ranked. In addition, category titles that beginwith the words “Other” or “All other” are not ranked. The remaining titles are ranked to determine theleading causes of death. When one of the titles thatrepresents a subtotal is ranked (e.g., Tuberculosis, all forms), its component parts (in this caseTuber-culosis of respiratory system andTuberculosis, otherforms) are not ranked.

Diseasesof heavt. —The death rate for Diseasesof heart (the leading cause of death) showed a0.5-percent decrease from unestimated 361.3per100,000population in 1972 to an estimated 359.5 in 1973.

Theprovisional marriage rateremained thesamefor 1973 as for 1972, 10.9 per l,OOOpopulation. Thiswas preceded by a 3-year plateau of 10.6 perl,000population.

In 1973 four of the nine geographic divisionsofthe United States had slight decreases inthenumbrof marriages performed (New England, Middle Atlan-tic, East South Central, and Pacific). The marriagerate declined in the South Atlantic Division as wellas in the Middle Atlantic and East South Central Di-visions. There was no change inthe rate for the NewEngland and Pacific Divisions. The marriage rateincreased in the remaining four divisions. Changesin the rate ranged from -2.4 percent to-i-4.O percent.

The number of marriages increased in34 Statesand declined in 16 andthe District of Columbia. A con-siderable decrease in the number of marriages oc-curred in New York (down 11,000 or 7 percent). When ●compared with 1972, the 1973 marriage rates in-creased in 23 States, declined in 22 and the Districtof Columbia, and remained the same in 5 States.The. marriage rate increased noticeably for Ohio(up 13 percent) and Utah (up 10 percent). Bo~h the number and the rate of divorces andan-nulments granted in the United States continued toincrease in 1973. The provisional number of divorcesgranted was 913,000. This represented an increaseof 74,000 or 9 percent over the number of divorcesgranted in 1972, similar to the increase from 1971to 1972. The divorce rate was 4.4 per l,OOOpopu-lation, the highest national rate ever reported and10percent above the 1972 rate. The increase inthedi-vorce rate between 1971 and1972 was 8 percent. Theprevious alltime peak of 4.3 per 1,000 populationoccurred in 1946. When comparing 1973 with 1963,the divorce rate nearly doubled. The average annualincrease was around 5 percent for the years 1963to 196.8 and. alittle over 8 percent from 1968 to1973.

The divorce rate among the States differs con-siderably. It ranges from 2.2per 1,000 populationinNorth Dakota to 15.6 per l,OOOpopulation in Nevada.Excluding Nevada, the highest rates for19730ccurredin Florida, Oklahoma, and Arkansas, with rates of7.3, 7.7, and 8.4 per 1,000 population, respectively. In 1973 New Jersey, Maryland, West Virginia, andArkansas had a20percent or more increase in theirdivorce rate over that for 1972. MONTHLY VITAL STATIST

EXPLANATORY

Nature and Sources of Data

All data for 1972 and 1973 in this report are pro-visional. Data for the United States, as a whole referto events occurring within the United States; otherdata refer to events within the reporting areas shown.

Beginning with 1970, final birth statistics excludedata for births to nonresidents of the United States andfinal mortality statistics exclude data for deaths ofnonresidents of the United S~ates. Data for nonresi-dents are included in provisional data for 1972 and 1973

Provisional or estimated figures for births, mar-riages, divorces, and deaths, except data estimatedfrom the Current Mortality Sample, summarize datafrom monthly reports of the numbers of birth, mar-riage, divorce, and death certificates received inregistration offices between two dates a month apartregardless of when the events occurred. Final figuresare counts of events occurring in the specified year.Monthly estimates of births and marriages for the en-tire United States are based on the monthly reportsadjusted for observed differences from final monthlyfigures. State figures are not adjusted in this manner. All mortality figures exclude fetal deaths.

● Provisional marriage data by State are shown intable 1. For most States data represent marriagesreported. The following areas reported marriage li-censes issued in 1973: Arizona, Arkansas, Kentucky,Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New Orleans, andNew York City.

Seasonal adjustment factors reflect changes inthe Lenten season each year and in the number ofSaturdays in each month.

Provisional divorce data including reported an-nulments are shown in table L for the areas report-ing divorce data monthly. Divorce figures for theUnited States are estimated from a summary ofmonthly reports from 42 States and the District ofColumbia. These areas contain over 90 percent ofthe population of the United States as enumerated in1970.

Current Mortality Sample

The Current Mortality Sample is a 10-percentsystematic sample of death certificates received eachmonth in State vital statistics offices. Deaths anddeath rates for 1972 and 1973 by cause, age, color, and sex were estimated from this sample.

The sample was taken from death certificates

●received monthly during 1972 and 1973 in the vitaI

statisl

CS REPORT 11

NOTES

cs offices in the 50 States, the District of Co-lumbia, and two independent registration cities—NewOrleans and New York. The sample~for each of theseareas consists of one-tenth of the death certificatesreceived in the office between a given date and the samedate of the following month. All death certificates re-ceived during the 1-month period are sampled regard-less of the month or year in which the death occurred. As a result the monthly sample is not strictly com-parable to a sample on a month-of-occurrence basis. The proportion of death certificates received in the -samples for each month of 1973 representing deathsoccurring in the current month and those occurringin other months are shown in the following table:

Because of the way in which death certificates areprocessed in California, this State contributes a highproportion of the certificates for deaths not occurring”in the sample month. For the sample exclusive ofCalifornia, the percentages of the sample deaths oc-curring in the current month constitute about 72 per-cent of the total as opposed to 67 percent of the entixesample. As for thz year of occurrence, 97.6 percentof the 193,863 transcripts in the 1973 sample were fordeaths occurring in 1973 and 2.4 percent for deathsoccurring in 1972.

The mortality statistics presented here are com-piled in accordance with the World Health OrganizationRegulations, which specify that member nations clas-

sif y causes of death in accordance with the currentrevision of the International Statistical Classification

i An adap-of Diseases, Injuries, and Causes of Death.tion of the Eighth Revision of the Classif ication—Eighth Revision, International Ctissification of Dis-eases, A&#ted for Use in the United States 2—wasused beginning with 1968. The Seventh Revision wasused for 1958 through 1967.

This introduction of a new revision has led to abreak in the comparability of data by cause of death. The comparability ratio is a measure that estimatesthe degree of comparability by cause.

For information about comparability ratios be-tween the Seventh and Eighth Revisions, see MonthlyVitil Statistics Repoyts, Vol. 17, No. 8, Supplement. For a list of other reports on the effects of revisionsof the International Lists on mortality statistics tabu-lated by cause, see Vitil Statistics-Spectil Reports,Vol. 51, No. 4, March 1965, p. 248.

Besides specifying the Classification, the WorldHealth Organization Regulations outline the form ofmedical certification and the coding procedures to beused. In general when more than one cause of deathis reported, the cause designated by the certifyingphysician as the underlying cause of death is the causetabulated.

Causes of death for data presented in this publi-cation were coded by procedures outlined in the 1969,1970-71, and 1972 issues of Part 2 of NCHS Instmc-tionManual, Vital Statistics, Instructions for MedicaiClassification of Death Records and the UnderlyingCause of Death.

.Co’rrection for Bias

The method of computing the bias factors whichadjust for over- or under-reporting of certain causesof death in the Current Mortality SampIe would haveinvolved comparing sample data for 1973 with finaldata for the 3 years immediately preceding 1973. How-ever, final 1972 data are not yet available. As a re-sult the usual correction factors that correct for

●biases in the sample data for certain causes of deathwere not computed for the 1973 data.

Sampling Variability

Since the estimates of deaths and death rates pre-sented in this report (with the exceptions of total deathsand deaths under 1 year) are based on a sample of thedeath certificates, they are subject to sampling vari-ability. The estimated percent error shown in thisreport is a measure of the sampling variability to beexpected and represents the standard error of the es-timated number of deaths (or of the estimated deathrate) expressed as a percent of the estimate. Thechances are about 2 out of 3 that the percent differ-ence between an estimate and the result of a completecount is less than the percent error shown. The chancesare about 19 out of 20 that the percent difference isless than twice the percent error.

The percent errors of the estimates for givencauses of death or for a given age-color-sex groupare computed as follows:

whereV =the percent error of the estimate

x= the estimated number of deaths from a given ●cause-age-color-sex group

N = 1,977,000, the provisional number of registered

deaths in 1973.

The percent error due to sampling may be ob-tained by using the above formula where X is the es-timated number of deaths in a given group. For easyreference, the percent errors ascribable to samplingfor estimates based on several levels in the numberof deaths are
