Visual Vocabulary 1. Ideology- A set of ideas that reflect a person’s or group of people’s beliefs and values. Ex. Individualism- Belief that the primary focus is on the individual, not the group. Ex. Visual Vocabulary

1. Ideology- A set of ideas that reflect a person’s or group of people’s beliefs and values.Ex. The ideology Catholicism is a religion of a group of people that find their faith in a higher soul.

2. Individualism- Belief that the primary focus is on the individual, not the group.Ex. The United States of America’s society is based firmly on the belief of individualism.

3. Collectivism- Groups run the show. Instead of focus of the individual there is more focus on the group and the people.Ex. The communist country of Russia has strong reliance in belief system if collectivism.

4. Liberalism- Political belief system that involves social progress through collectivism.Ex. The Liberal party of Canada participates in the belief system of liberalism and tries to focus on the group more than the individual.

5. Self Interest- Personal interest in which a person looks out foremost for itself.Ex. When purchasing a car that seats two for a family of six I am looking at my own self interest. Travelling is good for me, terrible for the family.

6. Competition- When two or more individuals or groups strive for a goal that cannot be shared.Ex. Walmart* and Zellers* are two department stores which are in stiff competition with each other.

7. Freedom- Rights, beliefs, values, etc. all controlled by the individual. Freedom is a huge privilege given to us by our government. Ex. Canada and the USA are prime examples of countries with a vast amount of freedom.

8. Rule of law- A statement that means everyone is subject to the law which the government has built. Even leaders have to follow the law.Ex. Citizens are obliged to follow the rule of law or they will be punished.

9. Private Property- Property which is owned by the individual and not the government. The individual can to what the wish to the property that falls within any laws or by- laws. Ex. Anybody that owns a home in Canada has private property.

10. Collective Responsibility- Holding a group responsible for any individual’s actions, positive or Negative. Ex. Taking responsibility for abusing the minority in the past is an example of collective responsibility.

11. Collective Interest- Focus is on everyone’s interests in the circle, not only the individuals. Ex.

12. Cooperation- A group of people working together to achieve a goal.Ex. It takes cooperation to be a part of a sports team.

13. Economic Equality- The blending of classes throughout a society. There is a somewhat equality between the rich, the middle, and the poorer. Ex. In comparison to parts of Brazil, where the slums and rich areas are separated by a wall, our society is economically equal.

14. Collective Norms- Standards and behavioral traits of a group or community. Ex. Peeing in a public area is against some of our collective norms.

15. Public Property- Property which is owned by the government not the individual.Ex. A playground is an example of public property.

16. Belief- Anyone’s personal thoughts of what is the “truth” on any subject.Ex. I believe that ghosts are real and haunt dirty abandoned houses.

17. Values- The way people rate what is important in their life. Higher up values are more important the lower values.Ex. Family is an extremely important value in most people’s lives.

18. Individual Identity- the personality of an individual. This individual identity helps shape a collective identity.Ex. Activities that people participate in and the way people act form their individual identity.

19. Collective Identity- a sense of belonging to a group. Collective identity is formed by a group of similar individual identities. Ex. Cultural groups share a collective identity.
