How you pose and where you pose are up to you.Take this image on your memory stick to Staples at The Meteor Centre, Derby and enlarge to A0 in black and white.(See slide show from GI) Go to The Quad: ‘Accidentally on Purpose’27 July-7 October 2012Studio: planning and ideas/ proposals LB
Task:
Stick the black and white poster image on your studio or bedroom wall. You will need to work onto this poster by hand (not digitally) in any colour medium.Add original drawing and mark-making to this image in any way that connects the viewer with who you are, physically, spiritually and artistically.
What do you value? What do you see in your mind’s eye? What are your obsessions? What are your fears? What does your world look like?
Materials and approaches:You can use water colours, paint, ink, acrylic paint, printed letters, hand drawn calligraphy, photo-collage elements, charcoal, pencil, fine-liners, stencilling, sprays and found elements of any kind. You can use dry brush techniques, a limited palette of colour, stippling, ripping, reversing, cutting, embellish-ing, decorating, destroying and beautifying.

SKETCH BOOKS SLIDESHOW(LR+ GI)The sketch book in many forms.
How you record and collect? This is your personal archive and planning medium. One sample page to be generated per student as an exercise on the word ‘window’.What might be your starting point and what should you consider (team)?

SKETCHBOOK BRIEF (NMcN)Wednesday 3rd OctoberGo to Pickford’s House Museum in Derby.Create 5 (or more) pages of responses to the follow-ing title:
Your challenge is to visually archive not only objects, people and textures found in the Pickford’s House Museum but also feelings, sensations, moods and at-mospheres that occur to you during your visit. For this reason we would encourage notation, colour swatches, texture, word/image/texture combinations, architectural drawings juxtaposed with materials and techniques. Some of what you record may be figurative but some may be more abstract.Half of what you produce can be produced on site and the rest may be developed in your own studio.
Pickford’s House Museum can be found at: 41 Friar Gate, Derby, DE1 1DA. Telephone: 01332 715181

Week 3
10th October /10.00am /Green Room/ MS102Sketchbook Review GI/ LR/ NmcN
What did you record? What did you value?
Did you follow a process in your information gather-ing and did you develop a theme within your work?
For example, did you become aware of the female, or male objects in the collection; the status of certain belongings; or the presence of technology? You will have naturally focussed on certain thingsbut what have you tried to convey,? What materials have you used and do your choices of materials now create a subtext for the viewer?
Quick task:On A3 paper, create a composition of three elements from your sketchbook. Cluster these things togetherto combine them in an interesting way.Can you play with shape, meaning or colour?__________________________________________Homework
Pickford’s Collage Brief (Slideshow LR)
Create a collage on A3 paper or board that describesThe Pickford’s House Museum.
You will be asked to focus on colour, texture and mood. You may wish to identify motifs or objects that can be developed and repeated to create a mood.
You may utilise your sketches or make subsequent vis-its to the museum to investigate the collection further. Please remember that your choices start to build meaning and communication for your viewer. If you illustrate ten tea pots in blue inks, the viewer will start to compose their own idea of what this narrative suggests. Is there any thought or feeling that you might like to convey? You may choose to be figurative, or you may choose to behave in an abstract fashion where objects combine, fuse or create conflict.

Week 4
16th October /10.00am /Green Room/ MS102COLLAGE REVIEW/ in studio
To what extent have you utilised the collage medium?Have you used texture and colour in a descriptive way?Have you managed to convey the essence of the house and have you combined imagery in an innova-tive manner?
Note:The idea behind the brief is to deviate slightly from reality, so the collage might create a hybrid where images and textures combine to form a new environ-ment where wallpaper, shoes and teapots blend with lipstick and bird cages.
Do you feel that this process has liberated you from a figurative/ linear world, or has it presented new problems?
Are you happy with your image?__________________________________________
PICTORIAL LETTERFORMSSlideshow GI / LR
Typography is all around us. What happens when the formal text that we are so familiar with comes into the hands of an illustrator? What might happen to the dialogue?
Task:Over hear a conversation and commit it to your sketchbook. Now recreate it showing where it oc-curred and the nature of its surroundings.Play with letterforms and reflect a ‘sense of place’ in the lettering and how it is formed.
If your conversation was overheard in the cathedral, you may combine the letterforms with historic or religious detail, with a penitent face or hands; the launderette may combine washing symbols, colours of detergents, a sleeping man, or seventies design.
Homework:Produce this work at A3 size in the medium of your choice for next week.

PICTORIAL LETTERFORMS (GI / LR review)

How was this said, to whom?In what manner were the words spoken?
__________________________________________‘A SENSE OF PLACE ’(Lydia Riley)
In teams of two you are now asked to plan an on site visit to a venue of your own choice. This could be a boxing match, a museum, a pig farm, a hospital or other event.A strong emphasis is placed on you being safe from risk and able to draw and record together for an extended period. Each person will produce their own work for the project. You are required to produce eight drawings. within A4 (either landscape or portrait). Please experiment with wet and dry medium (ink+ pencil / charcoal+ pastel). Interesting combinations of techniques will be encouraged.
All of these will be scanned by you at 300dpi and brought into the studio on a memory stick, in week 7.
In week 7, you will be asked to create a publication based on your location in INDESIGN.In week 7 you will be asked to import these illustra-tions into a booklet and to also add text to the pages.

FIGURES SKETCHBOOK (Team)(Slideshow LR/ simple lines/ what not to draw)
A morning will be spent recording students the Markeaton Campus from various vantage points. The opportunity exists to record figures walking in The Street area.
You may observe from above at various levels but please do not hold drawing boards or books over the balconies for safety reasons.
Your aim will be to ‘capture’ figures in various activ-ities and to represent them using as few lines as you are able without compromising their form.
You may reduce the sketches to a series as a drawn animation or storyboard is you wish and may choose to add colour and texture to these at a later stage.
Homework:
Go online to posemaniacs.com
Create 4 x sketches of assorted poses in pencil in your sketchbook for next week.
In Pose 4, you should attempt to clothe and model your character with glasses, hair and footwear etc.
Try to create a narrative by adding a bag, special equipment such as a butterfly net or other curious item. If you do this, please use reference for any items you draw.
