    Sanatlar Festivalinin amac, Ortadoudaki

    ada grsel pratiklere odaklanan buluma-

lar ve tartmalar iin bir platform olutur-

mak, Suriyeden ve komu Arap lkelerinden

    gen sanatlarla, uluslararas sanatlar

    arasnda iletiime olanak yaratmakt.

Since its launch in Damascus in 2010, the

aim of the Visual Arts Festival Damascus has

been to create a platform for meetings and

    debates focusing on contemporary visual

practice in the Middle East and to encour-

age and facilitate exchange between young

artists in Syria and the neighbouring Arab

countries as well as their international peers.

    2011de Suriye ayaklanmalar balaynca

festivalin format deiti ve gebe bir hal ald:

    Festivale 2012de Uluslararas Rotterdam Film

Festivali, Power Cut Middle East program kap-

samnda yer vererek ev sahiplii yapt. Sergi,

    gsterim, konuma ve atlye almalarndan

oluan programyla 2013 festivali ise DEPO

    stanbulda gerekleiyor. Programda yer alan

btn yaptlar, Arap lkeleri ve Trkiyeden

sanatlara ak, dijital sanat ileri ars ze-

    rine gnderilen bavurular arasndan seildi.

When the Syrian uprising began in 2011, the

format of the festival changed and became

nomadic: In 2012, it was hosted by the Inter-

national Film Festival Rotterdam, as part of

the Power Cut Middle East program, and

in 2013 a program of exhibition, screenings,

talks and workshops will be hosted by DEPO

in Istanbul. The program was selected on

the basis of a call for digital art works for

artists from the Arab countries and Turkey.

    Bugn, 2013 festivalinin alnn birka

    gn ncesinde Trkiyenin her tarafnda

    protestolar var. Kentte yaayanlar popler

bir buluma alanndan mahrum edecek yeni

bir imar projesine kar balatlan protes-

to, siyasal iktidarn kstahlna itiraz eden

daha geni bir harekete ve yurttalk haklar

durumda. The New Yorkerda yaymlanan son

    makalesinde Orhan Pamuk, Taksim Meyda-

    nn, kendi ailesinin 1950lerde kesilmekten

baarmtr. imdi de stanbul halk, parkyla

beraber bir meydan, tad ortak yaam ve

    sosyal katlm anlaryla birlikte savunuyor.

Now, only a few days before the opening of

the 2013 edition of the festival, protests are

taking place throughout Turkey. What started

as a protest against yet another develop-

ment project in Istanbul that would deprive

the citys inhabitants of a favorite gathering

place has developed into a wider movement

against gouvernmental arrogance and a state-

ment against the repression of civic rights.

In a recent article in The New Yorker, Orhan

Pamuk compared Taksim Square with an oldchestnut tree that his own family successfully

saved from being cut down in the 1950s. The

members of his family took turns in guarding

the tree and were able to preserve it. Now,

the people of Istanbul are guarding a square

with its park, together with its memories

of civic engagement and communal life.

Arap dnyasnda devam eden zgrlk ve

    yurttalk haklar mcadelelerinde olduu

gibi Trkiyede de birok sanat bu harekete

dahil oldu. phesiz bu durum, sanatlarn

almalar zerinde de byk tesir yaratacak.

Just as in the ongoing ghts for freedom

and civic rights in the Arab world, many

artists in Turkey are engaged in this move-

ment. And it is sure to have an important

impact on the work of these artists.

    Arap lkelerinde, ayaklanmalar ve bunlara

elik eden sorular, blgedeki birok sanatnn

Bu seneki festival iin seilen projelerin ou

nemli sosyal meseleleri ele alyor ve byk

ksm da zel bir aktivist karakter tayor.

In the Arab countries, the ongoing upheavals

and the questions accompanying them are

visible in the recent works of many artists.

The search for new denitions of social

and geographical identities and roles, the

need to create new notions of belonging

and a general turn towards centering the

    human experience within artistic practice

are all themes that are very present. Many

of the works selected for this years fes-

tival address important social issues and

many have a distinctive activist character.

explore the work of this young, engaged

and exciting art scene and to participate in

Calling things by their names. Just to remind ourselves
