arasnda iletiime olanak yaratmakt.
Since its launch in Damascus in 2010, the
aim of the Visual Arts Festival Damascus has
been to create a platform for meetings and
debates focusing on contemporary visual
practice in the Middle East and to encour-
age and facilitate exchange between young
artists in Syria and the neighbouring Arab
countries as well as their international peers.
2011de Suriye ayaklanmalar balaynca
festivalin format deiti ve gebe bir hal ald:
Festivale 2012de Uluslararas Rotterdam Film
Festivali, Power Cut Middle East program kap-
samnda yer vererek ev sahiplii yapt. Sergi,

rine gnderilen bavurular arasndan seildi.
When the Syrian uprising began in 2011, the
format of the festival changed and became
nomadic: In 2012, it was hosted by the Inter-
national Film Festival Rotterdam, as part of
the Power Cut Middle East program, and
in 2013 a program of exhibition, screenings,
talks and workshops will be hosted by DEPO
in Istanbul. The program was selected on
the basis of a call for digital art works for
artists from the Arab countries and Turkey.
Bugn, 2013 festivalinin alnn birka

protestolar var. Kentte yaayanlar popler

Now, only a few days before the opening of
the 2013 edition of the festival, protests are
taking place throughout Turkey. What started
as a protest against yet another develop-
ment project in Istanbul that would deprive
the citys inhabitants of a favorite gathering
place has developed into a wider movement
against gouvernmental arrogance and a state-
ment against the repression of civic rights.
In a recent article in The New Yorker, Orhan
Pamuk compared Taksim Square with an oldchestnut tree that his own family successfully
saved from being cut down in the 1950s. The

Just as in the ongoing ghts for freedom
and civic rights in the Arab world, many
artists in Turkey are engaged in this move-
ment. And it is sure to have an important
impact on the work of these artists.

In the Arab countries, the ongoing upheavals
and the questions accompanying them are
visible in the recent works of many artists.
The search for new denitions of social
and geographical identities and roles, the
need to create new notions of belonging
and a general turn towards centering the
human experience within artistic practice
are all themes that are very present. Many
of the works selected for this years fes-
tival address important social issues and
many have a distinctive activist character.

Calling things by their names. Just to remind ourselves
that it exists by writing words or the names of what we
see, no more. Since the beginning of the revolution in
Syria, Al Halabi is regularly posting pictures on social
networks that are based on video found on internet,
commented just by words. As a blind reaction in front of
the horror, pictures disappear and allow just the place
for the words to resonate as an echo in our minds.

The project was developed from a carefully select-

book but originally created and distributed by the
anonymous Photoshop makers of the Syrian Elec-

traced on Google till their original sources. By com-
bining the images, informational texts and a ction-
al interview with an image maker, the installation
aims to formulate an impression and curiosity for
the myth created by the enemy but also tries to
understand the complex and sometimes surprising
use and appropriation of found, digital imagery.

A collective harmony is an important
concept in the army. Observing the

opportunity to discover the weakness-

from any military order. He observed,

Filmed in Algiers during the Arab
Spring, the video refers to the situation
of women in the Arab world and ques-

form a peculiar assemblage. From this

who is soon joined by other women.

Narrating myths from an unknown
future, Deniz ster invokes vaguely
familiar rituals from Anatolian folk-
lore, intertwined with Middle Asian
Shamanism and Islamic mythology.
She then remolds these in the post-in-
dustrial landscape of Glasgow; where
kinetics permeates her sculptures and
lms, with an aesthetic that is at once
Victorian and sci-.
Deniz ster bilinmeyen bir gelecekten
mitler anlatrken, Orta Asya amanizmi
ve slami mitojiyle i ie gemi Ana-
dolu folklornden mulak ekilde ta-
ndk ritelleri artrr. Sonra bunlar
Glasgowun post-endstriyel manzara-
s iinde yeniden ekillendirir; kinetikhem Viktoryen hem de bilim kurgusal
bir estetikle, heykelleri ve lmlerine
nfuz eder.
Born in Istanbul (Turkey), lives in Glasgow (UK). An
undergraduate from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University,
Deniz ster received an MA in Visual Arts and Commu-
