“What is Cittaslow?Cittaslow is an international network of small towns and cities whose aim it is to im-prove the quality of life for their citizens and their visitors. In Italian, Citta means ‘city’, and slow takes its inspiration from the slow-food movement which turns its back on fast-food culture. The principles of Cittaslow are sustainable development, quality and local produce - not to mention providing inspiration for healthier lifestyles and an improved quality of life. Since 1991, Cittaslow has grown from a local Italian initiative into a global network that today boasts more than 137 members in 22 different countries.

There’s something about South Fyn. It’s something about the atmosphere, the landscapes, the islands, and the rich maritime traditions. And it’s something that makes us feel both humble and proud each and every time we present South Fyn to visitors.

Svendborg is known as the capital of South Fyn. It’s a charming town with a bustling commercial commu-nity. But Svendborg is also Denmark’s only Cittaslow town. Cittaslow is all about focussing on the quality of life. It’s about engaging in the present and finding you own tempo. And, not least, it’s about giving yourself time to enjoy the good things in life.

South Fyn represents enjoyment for all your senses – the unique nature, the active life on and by the water, and the delicious local foods. South Fyn also repre-

sents experiences. We have festival days, film days, sailing regattas, lifestyle fairs and the largest food market in Scandinavia… to name but a few examples.

As something new, we are pleased to present Biking South Fyn. The whole region provides special experi-ences for those on two wheels – try for example the fruit rout, the treasure rout, or the love rout. Choose one of our ten routs, or plan your own on our special map. Along the rout, you’ll get information and stories on your mobile phone.

We hope that you will enjoy every minute that you spend in South Fyn. Come back as often as you want!

Best wishesSouth Fyn Tourist Office

4 THE LURE OF THE SOUND

Page 5: Visitsydfyn 2012

No visitor should miss out on taking a sailing trip on one of the many beautiful wooden ships that rule Svendborg Sound throughout the summer – and getting onboard is easy. On the trips, everyone in the family can try their hand at steering and set-ting sail. Or if you prefer, lay back on deck and let the skipper sail you off into the wild blue yonder. On days when the sea is calm, there’s usually a chance of spotting porpoises in the water.

Our Maritime Center arranges island trips and day-long excursions at sea. Take along your own picnic basket and buy refreshments onboard. On week-day evenings, the wooden ships Meta and Mjølner set sail from Svendborg and other towns (see the timetable on backpage). Relax on deck as the sun sets over the archipelago. If you’re lucky, the skipper may entertain you with a tall tale of life at sea.

THE SOuTH Fyn is lived out on the water

Experience the atmosphere at Lundeborg harbour, take the plunge

from a bathing jetty on Thurø, or visit one of the many small islands

and meet the locals. Let your temperament guide you – hop on

the ferry, rent a sea kayak or charter an entire sailing ship.

6 THE LURE OF THE SOUND

Newly renovated night ferry at Sejlskibsbroen

The veteran ferry M/S Helge is a local South Fyn treasure, plying its way daily between Svendborg, Thurø and Tåsinge. For many years, M/S Helge transported locals and visitors between the sound’s many islands and even today, the little ferry will be more than happy to pick you up from one of its six ports of call: Svendborg Harbour, Christiansminde, Vindebyøre, Troense, Grasten and Valdemars Slot.

Danmarks Museum For Lystsejlads

In the autumn of 2011, the night ferry KAIA from 1923 was launched following four years’ renovation at the Maritime Center’s boat yard. Over the past years, boat builders at the boat yard, which is an open boat yard and part of the mag-nificent harbour warehouse building, have told visitors about their craftsmanship and about KAIA. Before the bridge over the Svendborg Sound was built, KAIA was used as a night ferry connecting Svendborg and Vindeby on the island of Tåsinge. From one o’clock at night until seven in the morn-ing, the ferryman could be flagged down at the little office at the ferry jetty, and in this way, many drunkards and women giving birth could be transported over the sound. In 2007, the Maritime Center took over KAIA and, thanks to a number of donations from different foundations, it has been possible to renovate the ship. In the future, KAIA will be berthed at the Sejlskibsbroen bridge, from where the little ferry will operate on harbour trips, island-hopping trips, as a support boat dur-ing sailing races, on school services and much more.

The DanishYachting MuseumCome and visit a unique yachting museum. The museum has some wonderful boats on show and tells yachting’s exciting story in words and pictures.Combine your visit with a sailing trip from Svendborg onboard the M/S Helge which and get free admission to the museum. Tickets are sold onboard.

The island of Fyn offers...

At www.seatrout.dk you can read all about sea trout fishing on Fyn, find descriptions of the main fishing spots, and get tips on how to land that big catch. Don’t forget to buy a copy of ‘117 Fine Fishing Spots on Fyn’ or pick up a free sea trout fishing brochure at the tourist office.

some of the world’s best coastal sea trout fishing, and over the years many anglers in South Fyn have seen their dreams of catching the ‘big one’ come true. No matter what the weather conditions, you’ll always find a suitable stretch of coast from where to fish. The beautiful South Fyn coast stretches all the way from Bøsøre in the east to Langemarken in the west. Dot-ted along this coastline, you’ll find many exiting fishing spots including Purreskov, Elsehoved, Ballen, Lehnskov Strand and Maegaards Odde. Worth noting on Thurø is the stretch run-ning from Øgavl to Thurø Reef (Thurø Rev), and on Tåsinge

you’ll find good sea trout fishing at Valdemars Slot, Stenodden, Vornæs and Skansen. The sea trout came close to extinction in the waters around South Fyn, but after much local action (which included cleaning up the streams used as spawning grounds) the silvery fish has returned. Fishing is free, but remember to buy the mandatory fishing permit from the tourist office first. Happy fishing! For those looking for an enjoy-able alternative to coastal an-gling, spend a day course fishing at one of the area’s ‘put & take’ lakes. To learn more about angling, visit www.fiskekurser.dk

Blue Rock Put & TakeRavnegårdsvej 165762 Vester Skerninge(+45) 29 91 81 [email protected]

Blue rock is Denmark’s largest fishing park with 155,000 m2 of clear water fishing. The park is particularly good for spinning and fly-fishing. On-site toilet facilities. Special species fishing:More than 200 sturgeon as well as carp, waller, zander and more

THE LURE OF THE SOUND8

Page 9: Visitsydfyn 2012

Within walking distance from the centre of Svendborg, you’ll find the sandy beach at Christiansminde. By the beach are playing fields, a playground, mini-golf and an ice-cream kiosk. You’ll find the same facilities at Smørmosen on the east of the island of Thurø. Both are popular with families and young people. There are also good sandy beaches by Valdemars Slot, Lundeborg and on the island of Drejø.

South Fyn has many popular beaches, all of which offer something special

Drejø

The island of Fyn offers...

Page 10: Visitsydfyn 2012

DrejøDrejø is the largest of the three islands.

Once ashore, buy a map of the footpaths

that criss-cross the island’s moor land,

lakes and salt marshes. Drejø village has a

grocer’s store. Most of the town burned to

the ground on Midsummer’s Eve in 1942,

but you’ll still find beautiful historic build-

ings across the island. Pay a visit to the

local museum, Gammel Elmegaard, dating

from 1535, which has its own café where

you can see a scale model of the town as it

was before the fire.

SkarøThere are almost as many birch trees on

Skarø as there are inhabitants.

All 40 of the island’s birch trees are

tapped for their natural sweetener used

in the local production of organic ice-

cream. The ice-cream is sold through-

out Denmark, but is best enjoyed on the

island from where it originates. Skarø is

ideal for cycling tours so take your bike

with you on the ferry. The village has a

traditional village pond, a grocery store

and a children’s playground.

HjortøThe ferry sails to and from Hjortø only

a few times a day so it’s a good idea

to book your crossing in advance. The

crossing to the island (which covers an

area of less than one square kilome-

tre) takes an hour. The Agile Frog, the

Edible Frog, the European Green Toad

and the rare Fire-bellied Toad can all be

found on the island. Hjortø is also home

to a number of rare plants, including

the Many-flowered Buttercup and se-

veral variants of Goosefoot. Note that

there are no shops on the island.

National park South Fyn?With its over 50 small islands and sker-

ries, the South Fyn Archipelago is unique in

Denmark. This is why several municipalities

around the archipelago are working on plans

to make the whole area into a national park.

For almost 100 years, cargo and goods have been loaded from our old warehouse on the harbour in Svendborg. Grain, tobacco, rope and barrels have been transported to and from the islands, and today the Maritime Center’s harbour warehouse remains almost unchanged from how it was when it was constructed in 1873. The atmospheric warehouse shop is a more recent addition, but we’ve chosen to continue the tradition and we today stock goods from all of the islands.

In South Fyn, you are the one in control of the pace and it’s you who sets the agenda. The area is ideal for taking riding, cycling or walking trips on your own. If exploring on foot, you could choose to fol-low the Archipelago Trail where you’re guaranteed a first-rate countryside and wildlife experience. Or, plan your own walking or cycling route taking you past majestic manor houses, quaint harbours and old fishing villages, fruit orchards and lush mead-ows rich in birdlife. Should you get peckish along the way, you’ll be able to find a small local eatery serving good food or stock up on seasonal fruits from the many unmanned wayside stalls.

As one of the first places in Denmark, we have a special text-message service for you our visitors. While you are touring around South Fyn, you can

access more than 200 items of information and good stories about the wildlife, culture and his-tory of the places through which you are passing. Simply send a text with the word “oplevsydfyn” to 1919 to access the free program giving you stories, photos and sound clips. Of course, you can plan your trip from home beforehand by visiting www.oplevsydfyn.dk. (At the moment only in Danish).

23EXPERIENCE THE RICH HISTORY OF SOUTH FYN23

Humans have inhabited South Fyn for over 10,000 years – ever since the end of the last ice age. Only little is known about the very first settle-ments as today water covers the land where they once stood. Nevertheless, Neolithic long barrows and passage-tombs dot the landscape alongside Stone- and Bronze-Age burial mounds telling us a lot about life in South Fyn 6,000 years ago. The area around Gammel Hestehave is particularly rich in bronze-age mounds, and for those who love the Danish Neolithic period, the collection of artefacts at Broholm Manor (Oldtidssamlingen) is not to be missed.

During the Iron Age, southeast Fyn was one of Europe’s great centres of power, and at Gudme, one of Scandinavia’s largest settlements of the time stood. An example is ‘Gudmekongernes Hal’ (The Hall of the Gudme Kings). By climbing the tower next to Gudmekongernes Hal, which has been erected by Svendborg Museum, you get a good impression of this ancient site. As recently as 2010 treasure was unearthed here – a 140g gold neck-ring. The neck-ring was sent to The National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen for examina-tion, but will hopefully return to be put on display at Svendborg Museum.

During the same period, one of the largest trading centres of the time could be found at Lundeborg. Here, archaeologists have discovered luxury Roman goods including goblets, silver coins and jewellery. The area was one of Denmark’s richest and countless treasures of gold have been unearthed here. The largest of these is the Broholm Treasure, which weighed in at 4½ kilos. This is now at The National Museum of Denmark, but a copy of the treasure can be found at Broholm Manor’s Oltidssamling. Other finds from the period can be seen

at Svendborg Museum’s archaeological exhibition in Anne Hvides Gård, Svendborg. Settlements have existed where Svendborg lies today since at least the Stone Age. In a letter from 1229, the town Swineburgh was mentioned for the first time – Svendborg had been christened! In the letter, king Valdemar the Victorious presented Svendborg and southern Fyn as a gift to his daughter-in-law Eleonora. It is believed that the town’s name stems from the Danish word for porpoise – marsvin (literally ‘sea pig’) – of which there were many

in the local waters. The patron saint for mariners is Saint Nicholas, and like in many other harbour towns, a church of Saint Nicholas – Sct. Nikolai Kirke – was built in Svendborg during the 13th century.

The church was actually built on a small hill, but today it lies below the level of the surrounding town, which has grown above it over the years. Sct. Nikolai Kirke was constructed in different stages and the various building styles inspired by churches across the Baltic region emphasize the town’s importance as a port and trading town. Svendborg was – as

it is today – open to the world. In Svendborg, you can also visit two other churches that have stood since the middle ages. The Church of our Lady – Vor Frue kirke – is in the heart of Svendborg. It enjoys the high-est elevation and its spire can be seen from far beyond the town. The chimes of church bells resonating from the church spire on the hour during the day is one of the finest examples of bell ringing in Denmark. The church was established in con-nection with the building of Sct. Jørgens Leprosy Hospital outside the town and for many years functioned as a hospital church.

In 1534, the town’s citizens burned down Ørkild Castle. The Danish civil war (today known as ‘the Count’s Feud’) was in full stride. On the one side fought the citizens and the peasants; on the other fought the nobility and the church. The citizens of Svendborg were allegedly dissatisfied with the fact that the town was loosing revenue because the Bishop of Odense, who owned Ørkild Castle, chose to take his trade away from Svendborg’s main marketplace. The castle was never rebuilt but the stones from the castle were used in the construction of, among other buildings, the then town hall. Thurø church was also constructed using stones from the old castle. With its almost eight acres of land, Ørkild Castle was one of Denmark’s largest fortifications. Today you can visit what is left of the castle ruins at Ørkild Voldsted. Although little remains of the original fortifica-tion, you can get an idea of just how impressive the castle must have been and enjoy the magnif-icent natural surroundings.

26 EXPERIENCE THE RICH HISTORY OF SOUTH FYN

Local South Fyn maritime hero Niels Juel played a pivotal role in Danish history when, in the 17th century, he was victorious over the superior Swedish navy at the 1677 Battle of Køge Bay. In reward for his achievement, Niels Juel was presented with Valdemars Slot. This castle, which had been built by Christian IV in 1639 for his son Valdemar Christian, had been occupied during the war between Denmark and Sweden and was in a terrible state so Niels Juel set about restoring it. The current owner, Caroline Flemming, is a direct descendent of Niels Juel. During the 18th century, local commerce and trade began to flourish – not least thanks to the enterprising local shopkeepers. The charming half-timbered buildings which began to spring up throughout the 18th and 19th centuries still lend the town centre and harbour their characteristic charm today. One of Denmark’s oldest merchant houses from 1744 can be found on Kullinggade by the harbour front. Today, this building houses a kayak centre and an art studio.

Around the year 1800, the trade of shipbuilding came to Svendborg. The town soon became the centre of shipbuilding in Denmark. Today, one of the country’s

Throughout the 19th century, harbours and the road network were extended and developed, and in 1876, the railway between Svendborg and Odense was opened. The improved communication links served to stimulate the economic life of the town. And, as well as com-merce, trades, and shipbuilding, a wide-range of industries began to thrive. In 1872, the Svendborg Work- and Poorhouse was established. Later on, this became the Viebæltegård welfare home and is today the only welfare museum in Denmark allowing you to get an idea of how it was to be poor 100 years ago.

oldest working wooden shipyards, J Ring-Andersen Skibsværft, can be found on the island of Frederiksøen with proud vessels in dock all year round. In 1904, A.P. Møller founded the Svendborg Steamship Company. Today this is known as A.P. Møller Mærsk. The Møller family has its roots in Svendborg, and in 2001 Mærsk McKinney Møller was made honorary citizen of Svendborg and southern Fyn. Mærsk Mckinney Møller became the fourth honorary citizen of Svendborg after Count Brockenhuss Schack (1901), whose statue can be seen outside Svendborg magistrate’s, author Johannes Jørgensen (1936), whose room has been preserved in his memory in Fruestræde, and author Tom Christensen (1970), who is buried in Thurø churchyard.

In 1989, Svendborg was visited by the beautiful tightrope artist Elvira Madigan and the Swed-ish lieutenant Sixten Sparre, who chose to end their days in the Nørreskov forest on Tåsinge. At the local folk museum, Tåsinge Skipperhjem og Folkemindesamling, you can learn all about the tempestuous affair of the lovers leading up to the final drama in Nørreskoven forest. The museum also documents the history of the Tåsinge islanders

with an exhibition including many folk costumes. The museum is located by Bregninge Church. If you’ve got a head for heights, take a trip up the church tower. There are spectacular from the top of the church across the archipelago, and on a clear day you can even see the islands of Als and Zealand. The final resting place of the two lovers is in the nearby churchyard at Landet Church.

Naturama, Svendborg’s modern natural history museum from 2005, is an experience for all the senses. Here, you can play with light and sounds, and you can get up close to bears, whales and wild boar. The building has been constructed around the skeleton of a 16-meter-long sei whale which lost its way in Svendborg Sound in 1955. Naturama started in 1935 as Svendborg Zoological Museum and parts of the original museum are still preserved. See more on page 31 and at www.naturama.dk.

If you’ve always wanted to see a great castle from the inside, you get the chance at either Valdemars

Slot or Egeskov Slot. These two castles are open to the public and are both private residences for the owners and open museums for visitors. Both are active cultural destinations offering a wealth of activities throughout the summer season. In addition to access to the castle, at Valdemars Slot you can experience the Big-Game Trophy Museum featuring ethnographic artefacts from around the world as well as the castle’s Yachting Museum.

Complementing these two castles are South Fyn’s many estates and manor houses. One of the many magnificently restored manor houses is Broholm Gods, which offers overnight accommodation and a restaurant and plays host each summer to the Danish national dressage championships. The whole of South Fyn affords you with a rare landscape across which manor houses are dotted like pearls on a string. These manor houses have seen a lot of

life over the years and were of immense economic, cultural and social importance for the societies around them. Although most of these manor houses are today closed to the public, you shouldn’t deprive yourself of exploring the countryside to see these majestic buildings. Many of the properties are best viewed by foot or bike, taking you closer than you can get by car.

EVEnTS FLOODIng the town with lifeNo matter when you visit, Svendborg is always buzzing

with different events and activities.

Among the many special events are the International Clown Festival in May and Svendborg Festival Days in August, where the whole town overflows with life, activities and good music of all types. Throughout the year, you can hear live music at the various musical venues in Svendborg and, on top of this, Naturama puts on Thursday concerts especially for children throughout the summer.

The town’s theatre and the civic association’s new, award-winning building offer theatre productions,

concerts and stand-up shows. During the summer, the famous Rattrap Revue (Rottefælde-revy) provides humorous satire in Denmark’s oldest summer theatre ‘The Rattrap’. When the revue group packs up at the end of the season, the Courtyard Theatre (Baggårdsteatret) takes over with heroic and modern plays for both young and old. Alternatively, you can sit back and relax in the town’s modern cinema, which shows many English-language features.

Page 40: Visitsydfyn 2012

For guaranteed pleasant water-temperatures all year round, visit the local swimming pool. Svendborg’s pool, Svendborg Svømmehal, is centrally located and is the oldest in the region. The Svendborg Svømmeland aqua centre can be found on the out-skirts of the town and features a 62m water slide, a baby pool, a spa, and a 34˚c health pool.

To get a birds-eye view of the whole region, take off on one of the popular pleasure flights. Experienced pilots will show you the beautiful South Fyn landscape and many points of interest from the air. If you have a special request, you may be in luck that he’ll fly you there. And it’s not as expensive as you may think.

40 CULTURE FOR EVERYONE

Another noteworthy citizen of Svendborg in the early 1900s was sculptor Kai Nielsen. At Kunstbygningen SAK – Svendborg’s centre of arts – you will find approximately 70 Kai Nielsen works in the permanent collection, and his works are unavoidable as you wander round the town. The sculptures and monuments dot-ted around Svendborg are considered the town’s silent citizens, but, though silent, they have many a story to tell. Outside the cinema, you will meet Keld Moseholm’s popular small fat men busy trying to prevent a large stone from defying gravity and flying away. Other sculptures around the town bear testimony to Svendborg’s history as a seafaring town. To find out more about the town’s many sculptures, we recommend a guided tour with our town guide in the summer months.

In South Fyn there are enough galleries to satisfy even the keenest culture aficionados. And no matter whether you take your inspiration from paintings, sculptures or design you’ll find it here. There are even two local glassblowers, and you can visit both of them to learn a bit about their art and perhaps find a great souvenir to take home with you.

When the weather is nice, challenging the family to a round of mini-golf is a must. There are a number of good mini-golf courses across South Fyn, all of which are all very different to play on. You can find mini-golf courses at Valdemars Slot on Tåsinge, at Smørmosen on Thurø, and at Christiansminde beach in Svendborg.

Creative South FynIf you want to visit galleries and exhibitions, South Fyn’s got it all.

Explore the rest of delightful Fyn – and the charming islands of Ærø and Langeland! There are lots of experiences to be had just a short hop away from the South Fyn Archipelago. Take the ferry to the charming town of Ærøskøbing on the island of Ærø with its winding cobbled streets. And see the over 1,700 ships in bottles built by ‘Bottle’ Peter at the Flaske-Peters Samling. See more at www.arre.dk

Another delightful island is Langeland. To get there by the scenic route, drive over the islands of Tåsinge and Siø. At the Langelandsfortet fortress at Bagenkop you can experience the Cold War by crawling through the dark bunkers, getting up close to old fighter jets and boarding the Submarine Springeren, which is just as it was when the crew abandoned ship. See more at www.visitlangeland.com

Driving west along the winding roads towards Faaborg you will come across many museums well worth visiting including Faaborg Museum of Art, Faaborg Heritage Museum, The Prison Museum,

Kaleko Mill, and the town’s landmark – The Belfry. The Egeskov Slot castle is one of Denmark’s five-star-rated attractions and an experience for young and old. The castle’s large park is the perfect place for a picnic and the many eateries offer a wealth of culinary delights. Take a tree-top walk, lose yourself in the maze, or rekindle old memories in the museums’ collection of cars, motorbikes and toys. Or send shivers down your spine by visiting the coffin in the cold crypt…See more at www.visitfaaborgmidtfyn.dk

South Fyn has provided the locations for more than 40 Dan-ish feature films, ranging from “The Green Butchers”, “The Sun King”, “Adam’s Apples”, and Golden Globe and Oscar winner, “In a Better World”.The regional film foundation FilmFyn, along with the EU pro-ject North Sea Screen Partners, attracts film production by way of investment in the film projects. And, in recent years, South Fyn has been visited by a long list of well-known actors and directors who have record-

ed their films in and around the South Fyn landscapes.

Most recently, in 2011, the world-renown Danish director, Bille August, recorded his new film “The Passion of Marie” at the Fjellebroen studios and at the Welfare Museum in Svendborg. The two of the popular Danish family films in the “Far til fire” series –‘Back to nature (2011) and ‘Far til fire – at sea’ – have also been filmed in South Fyn. For more information on the films, visit www.filmturist.dk

Follow in the footsteps of the films via your mobile phoneIf you own a smartphone, you can download FilmFyn’s new app. The app lets you find the various film locations in South Fyn, read about the films and watch film clips. Download the app at www.filmturist.dk/app or by scanning this qr-code.

As the first place in Denmark, visitors to South Fyn can follow in the footsteps of Danish film successes, experience the filming locations, listen to anecdotes about the films and watch or re-watch film clips. The rout also takes in:• Arreskov Slot – where you can experience what it’s like to be trapped in the dungeon, like in the “Far til fire” films.

• Horne Kirke - where Adam (played by actor Ulrich Thomsen) meticu-lously cares for after his apples.• Fåborg Torv - where Thomas Bo Larsen held his extraordinary operatic concert in “When a Man Comes Home”.• Priorensgade – where the cannibalistic couple (Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Mads Mikkelsen) sold their organic meat in “The Green Butchers”.

• The car workshop – where the homemade bomb in “In a Better World” exploded with horrific consequences. • and a look around the privately owned film studios at Fjellebroen.

Bus trips run throughout the summer. Contact Fåborg Tourist office on (+45) 6261 0707 to hear when the next tour leaves. Tickets approx. DKK 150,-.

Svendborg, as the only town in Denmark, is part of the Cittaslow

network.

TakE a STROLL THROugH THE STREETS and experience the atmosphere

Svendborg’s selection of speciality shops keep shoppers coming back again and again. Wander through Brogade, Skattergade and Munkestræde by the station – the town’s oldest streets – and browse through the many small shops. Peep through the gateways and alleys in the town’s buildings and discover the many hidden courtyards that give the town its special atmosphere. Follow

South Fyn Food FestivalEach year, Svendborg plays host to Northern Europe’s largest food fair and producers’ market called Kulinarisk Sydfyn (South Fyn Culinary Festival). Here, the motto is “Food with attitude” and in 2010 the market attracted over 12,000 visitors. More than 150 producers set up stalls offering the very best of slow food, organic and local produce – and there are loads of free samples to taste of chocolate, bread, salamis, cheeses, fish, beer and much more. Much of the produce you can taste at the Kulinarisk Sydfyn festival is local produce from around the archipelago. Islanders discovered long ago the importance of focussing on high quality and the special local characteristics. Today they produce everything from honey, apple juice, beer and ice cream to marmalades and spicy gooseberries. That it’s people and not machines that are behind the production process can be tasted. And this gives the island specialities a quite special character fitting perfectly with Svend-borg’s Cittaslow mentality. A selection of this produce is available for purchase at the Pakhusbutikken shop by the Maritime Center. You can also visit the local producers who will be more than pleased to welcome you in.

Hellevgård Farm Shop Most of the produce sold in the shop is home produced at Hellevegård:- Large assortment of seasonal vegetables- Strawberries, raspberries, apples and pears- Cold-pressed rapeseed oil- Delicious apple juice- Homemade preserves etc.- Freshly milled flour- Honey

The cuisine of South Fyn has delicacies in abundanceIf you get hungry, retreat into one of the many harbour-front restaurants and cafés, walk back to the town centre, or find a good place to eat outside the town. Many of the town’s restau-rants have adopted the Cittaslow mentality and local delicacies from archipelago fjord shrimps to fresh asparagus and delicious potatoes from the region’s rich soil are in abundance in the cuisine of South Fyn. There’s something for every pallet.

Salig Simons gårdSalig Simons Gård is part of the Cit-taslow movement. We prepare light lunch dishes while you relax. We allow peace and quiet to reign in the old merchant’s house – so one glass of wine rarely suffices. And remember, all our wines and beers are made by highly competent winegrowers and brewers, and most of it is organic

A South Fyn adventure at seawith the sailing ships Meta and Mjølner

Experience a sailing excursion like in days gone by. Help hoisting the sails, or relax on deck and take in the smell of the ocean spray, the tar and the rigging. Every weekday during the school holidays, the ships sail 4-hour excursions from Svendborg, Fåborg, Langeland and Ærø, dropping anchor at an island nearby. Also, in the evenings, Meta and Mjølner embark on a 2-hour sunset excursion. At all times, you may bring along a picnic to enjoy onboard.

Let the adventures begin....
