CURRENT EXHIBITSKAY WALKINGSTICK: AN AMERICAN ARTIST
OPENING OCT. 15, 2016; ON DISPLAY THROUGH JAN. 8, 2017
Kay WalkingStick: An American Artist surveys the career of one of today’s most accomplished American Indian artists. Over the course of fi ve decades, WalkingStick, a leading practitioner of contemporary landscape painting, has avidly explored her own hybrid cultural identity, engaging Native history along with feminism, Minimalism, and other key art historical movements. She has become particularly renowned for her majestic and sensual landscapes, which imbue natural scenery with the charge of personal and collective memory. This exhibition is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
IT’S YOUR TURN: A ‘HOME’ STUDIO
ON DISPLAY THROUGH SUNDAY, DEC. 4, 2016
Once visitors explore and learn about the Native people in the Southwest in the HOME exhibit (see below), they can expand on their learning with several fun hands-on activities based on the cultures of different tribes, designed to help to deepen understanding of what was seen in HOME. Visitors are encouraged to return the HOME exhibit after completing their activities in It’s Your Turn so they can see which parts of the exhibit inspired their creativity.
OVER THE EDGE: FRED HARVEY AT THE GRAND CANYON AND IN THE GREAT SOUTHWEST
ON DISPLAY THROUGH DEC. 31, 2017
Deepen your knowledge of the Grand Canyon by making this exhibit your fi rst stop on the way! The Santa Fe Railway and its concessionaire, the Fred Harvey Company, were masters at creating a vision of the Southwest. Jointly, their ephemeral publications promoting the merits of the “Indian Southwest” number in the tens of thousands. This exhibit is well illustrated with examples of pamphlets, advertisements, postcards and other promotional materials.
THE THIRD DIMENSION: SCULPTURAL STORIES IN STONE AND BRONZE
ONGOING
Some of the most exciting and moving American Indian fi ne art of the 20th and 21st centuries has been created by sculptors. The Heard Museum is fortunate to have recently been given works by leading American Indian sculptors such as Allan Houser and John Hoover. Gifts also include sculpture by the next generation of accomplished sculptors inspired by these pioneers, such as Doug Hyde and Bob Haozous, Houser’s son.
Some of these sculptures were recently conserved thanks to a grant from the 2015 BA Art Conservation Project.

HOME: NATIVE PEOPLE IN THE SOUTHWEST
ONGOING
Learn about the Native peoples of the Southwest and hear them tell their stories in their own words in the Heard Museum’s signature exhibit. In addition to cultural objects, the exhibit showcases the traditions of Native peoples of the past and present and examines their definition of home. REMEMBERING OUR INDIAN SCHOOL DAYS: THE BOARDING SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
ONGOING
This powerful exhibit immerses visitors into the story of American Indian children who were forced by the federal government to attend residential boarding schools hundreds of miles away from home.
