Our unique environment provides a home to many species of plants and wildlife that do not exist anywhere else in the world. You will see our little Key Deer and experience the peaceful waters that hold our treasured coral reefs. The Keys showcase a natural beauty that is best enjoyed by immersing yourself in its history and understanding how fragile our ecological balance is here. Whether you want to kayak, snorkel, dive, boat, fish, shop or enjoy our many local restaurants, there is no limit to the many ways you can enjoy the Lower Florida Keys.

As you leave the mainland, you will travel south on US 1 - the Florida Keys Scenic Highway and Florida’s only All-American Road. The Lower Keys begin after you pass over the Seven Mile Bridge and come to Little Duck Key, where you might stop at the pet-friendly Veterans Memorial Park to snap a picture of our pristine waters. Next on your journey is Bahia Honda State Park, a beautiful park with a nationally recognized beach; it is a great place to snorkel or just relax and enjoy the Florida sunshine. Big Pine Key is famous for its diminutive Key Deer and home of the National Key Deer Refuge. There are two primary public use areas with trails in the Key Deer Refuge: the Blue Hole, Watson and Mannillo Nature Trails. There are additional, more rustic trails on No Name Key, Upper and Lower Sugarloaf Key and Cudjoe Key. There are lovely bike paths on which to cycle and many opportunities to enjoy the water.

The National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the Key Deer and other wildlife

species in the Florida Keys. The Key Deer Refuge includes protected lands on 25 islands, and consists of pine rockland, hardwood hammock, freshwater wetlands, mangrove and beach areas. The Refuge has a visitor center in the Big Pine Shopping Plaza, open Mon-Fri 9 am - 4 pm, and most weekends 10 am - 3 pm; visitors and residents are encouraged to stop by for information about places to see and photograph wildlife, maps, guided nature and birding walks, kids programs, and other opportunities at the Refuge. The Center also shares information on the Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges-Great White Heron and Key West.

A few miles down the road, past the cozy residential areas of the Torch Keys and Ramrod Key, is Summerland Key. Here, a world-class marine science educational and research organization, Mote Marine Laboratory, is exploring cutting edge techniques to grow coral that will hopefully help regenerate our endangered reef.

Cudjoe Key is another charming residential island, and Sugarloaf Key, MM 16 – 20, is famous for the Bat Tower, a historical site chronicling a creative, if failed, attempt at pest control. Largely undeveloped Saddlebunch Keys retains its rugged natural beauty and offers a lovely scenic drive along the remnants of the Overseas Railroad. In Big Coppitt, you’ll find a laid-back residential area with a number of rental homes and plenty of amenities to meet your vacation needs.

Military pilots train at the U.S. Naval Air Facility on Boca Chica Key, while Stock Island’s campgrounds and deep water marinas signal the end of your journey through the Lower Keys.

Stock Island is a small working community just north of Key West, separated from their famous neighbor by the Cow Key Channel Bridge. From its days as a freighter port with ‘stock’ for the liveries to today’s bustling docks to the live-aboard marinas – Stock Island has an eclectic, rustic charm all its own.

Stock Island is split, with the Gulfside being a part of Key West and the Oceanside unincorporated Monroe County. The Key West portion has Lower Keys Medical Clinic, our Community College, our Sheriff’s offices, KW Botanical Gardens and the FKSPCA’s Animal Shelter.

The southern portion, which is in our Lower Keys District, has a lot of small industrial-type businesses like auto body shops, welders, engine repair, etc. Recently, some very upscale businesses have sprung up along Safe Harbor, and two new hotels have been completed that promise to provide an enjoyable visitors’ experience. Exciting restaurants offer gourmet fare like Roostica, famous for its wood-fired pizza, and our tried n’ true Hogfish Restaurant which gives visitors a taste of casual Keys’ waterfront dining.

Stock Island holds a lot of promise, and our Chamber is delighted to see the progress being made in this community.

Whether it’s relaxation or adventure you seek, you’re sure to find it in Florida’s

As the least people-populated section of the island chain, the majority of the Lower Keys’ inhabitants have four legs, fins or feathers. No visit would be complete without encountering some of the native wildlife.

The National Key Deer Refuge covers nearly 9,200 acres on Big Pine Key and No Name Key. Key Deer are a diminutive, endangered species that stand only 26 to 32 inches high at the shoulder and weigh a “whopping” 90 pounds. Feeding or engaging them is illegal, because it makes them far too comfortable around humans and automobiles.

Nature lovers will find a variety of activities within the refuge. Blue Hole, an abandoned limestone quarry from railroad days, is the largest body of freshwater in the Keys and home to fish, turtles and alligators. An observation platform affords the opportunity to view native wildlife up close.

Just north of Blue Hole are the 2/3-mile Jack C. Watson Trail and the 800-foot handicapped-accessible Fred Mannillo Wildlife Trail, the latter of which leads to an observation platform overlooking freshwater wetland. Both trails are ideal for spotting Key Deer.

The Great White Heron National Refuge encompasses a 174-square-mile area between Key West and Marathon. It is also a mecca for birders, as there are more than 180 avian species within.

More untamed natural beauty can be found at Bahia Honda State Park. The beach here is said to be the most beautiful in the Keys and because of its adjacent deep water channel, activities tend to be centered on the water, including swimming and snorkeling.

The stunning reefs and intriguing wrecks of the Lower Florida Keys are the underwater equivalent of Paris’ most beautiful gardens. Life springs from all directions in this aquatic playground and whether you prefer to float lazily across the surface or descend to the sea floor, chances are the ideal trip awaits you.

The Looe Key Sanctuary Preservation Area, part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular reefs in the Florida Keys. Named after the H.M.S. Looe which sank in 1744, the sanctuary varies in depth from less than 10 feet to more

than 100 feet, making it an ideal snorkeling and diving site for beginners and experts alike. Looe Key boasts an impressive array of large star and brain coral, as well as colorful parrotfish, barracuda, loggerhead turtles and even the occasional Caribbean reef shark.

To the west of Looe Key lies the wreck of the Adolphus Busch, Sr., which sank in 110 feet of water in 1998. Despite its recent arrival, the artificial reef already bursts with marine life. An oft-seen 350-pound goliath grouper counts itself as one of the wreck’s first tenants and diving aficionados say life is developing at an astonishing rate.

Surrounded on all sides by water, the Lower Keys are a haven for fishermen. Anglers looking to test their skills offshore will find the deep blue waters of the Gulf Stream filled with marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo and other ferocious fighters waiting to take the bait. Trolling along the reef will yield yellowtail, snapper and grouper.

Tranquil Florida Bay, known to the locals as the “backcountry,” is the territory for redfish, trout and the elusive bonefish, better known here as “grey ghosts.” The biggest challenge in these shallow waters is hooking the mighty tarpon, which can weigh up to 200 pounds. It’s just one of many treasures to be caught in this slice of paradise.

There are nearly as many fishing options in the Keys as there are varieties of fish. Charter a boat with a licensed guide to take you offshore or into the backcountry. Party boats are a fun way to get the family out on the water. While bridge fishing, you can catch dinner and create memories; there are several fishing bridges in the Lower Keys.

Bait, tackle and a license should be included in your charter, as well as information on legal limits for “keepers.” Pack refreshments and wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

There are many opportunities for shopping, dining and entertainment in the Lower Keys, with everything from gift shops to art galleries to consignment shops and even a year-round weekend flea market. No matter where you go shopping in the Lower Keys, you’re sure to find something special that you wouldn’t find anywhere else.

After you’re done shopping, check out one of many dining establishments. Local restaurants offer a wide array of fresh seafood and international cuisine. If you’re in the mood for some entertainment, many restaurants offer live music provided by local celebrities.

Grimal GroveGrimal Grove is quickly becoming one

of the Lower Keys’ newest treasures. It is one of the most precious and legendary tropical fruit gardens in continental North America. Many years ago, Adolf Grimal spent thousands of dollars to purchase and transport low pH soil from the mainland, with the intention of planting tropical trees from around the world. At each planting site, he utilized existing sink holes and dug out the solid rock to create deep craters. He built raised concrete beds at each site and refilled these holes with black soil trucked in from the mainland, adjusting the pH according to whatever tree he planted. He then constructed large catchment basins to store water. His irrigation system, a labyrinth of underground piping, connected multiple cisterns, ponds and pools. When he died in 1997, the property fell into disarray. Growing Hope Initiative has recently taken possession and is working to restore the property to its original brilliance. There are rare trees thriving here that do not exist anywhere else in the US, and GHI is engaging the community through workshops and events to raise awareness about this tropical fruit farm. Grimal Grove is located at the end of Cunningham Lane on Big Pine Key.www.growinghopeinitiative.org

The Lower Keys have a rich history. Like most of Florida, the Keys’ first inhabitants were Native Americans. The area was already home to the Calusa and Tequesta tribes when Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500’s. Ponce de Leon originally named the Keys Los Martires (the martyrs) in the year 1513. Experts believe the name may have come from the name of an Indian village named Cuchiyaga (meaning “martyred place”).

The population of the Lower Keys was sparse during the 1800’s. A few hardy settlers tried to make a living through fishing, sponging and burning charcoal but the remote location and mosquitoes made this area difficult to live in. At the same time Key West was Florida’s largest city with a population of 18,000.

The Keys were changed forever when Henry Flagler built a railroad from Miami to Key West. After seven years of incredibly hard work, the Florida East Coast Railroad opened

the Keys segment in 1912. By 1917, real estate sales were encouraging roadway development and in 1928 the “Overseas Highway” existed in tandem with the railway, using ferry boats to connect areas where it was too costly to build roadway bridges.

In 1935 large sections of the railroad line and roadway were destroyed by the great Labor Day hurricane. The rail-road right-of-way was sold to the State of Florida, who converted the bridges and built what is today’s Overseas Highway. At this time in history, it could take over seven hours to travel the 118 miles from Key West to Key Largo.

Around 1938 the road was desig-nated an extension of U.S. Highway 1, creating an East Coast highway that stretched from Key West to Maine. This highway enabled tourism to grow into the industry that it is today.
