From the Desk of Fr. Kaim Law Enforcement Committee As I mentioned at all the Masses last weekend, I’m forming a committee of some of our parishioners with a law enforcement background to give recommendations to me on how we can better protect the faithful, especially during weekend Masses, but at all the other times as well. If you do have a law enforcement background and are interested, you can email me at [email protected]. We won’t meet until July when I get back from my military commitment. Military Days coming up I’ll be leaving in early June for my usual commitment to the United States Air Force. As always, I will be going to Cannon AFB in New Mexico where I will be, among other things, leading a pilgrimage to the “Miracle Stairs” in Santa Fe. Have you heard of it? If not, you can “Google it” and learn something new about our Catholic faith. At any rate, I will be gone for three weekends, the second, third and fourth Sundays in June. Please keep me, and our Special Ops Airmen I minister to in your prayers. Speaking of military… We of course commemorate Memorial Day this weekend. This is a time to especially thank those who gave their life for our country. When the first Memorial Day was celebrated, a group of women from Washington DC asked the War Department for permission to put flowers on the soldiers’ graves at Arlington Cemetery. After a lot of haggling, permission was finally granted to do so. But a stern order was attached to the permission. No flowers were to be placed on the graves of the Confederate soldiers who were buried in a segregated section of the cemetery. The ladies carried out their task, careful to follow these instructions. Then General James Garfield made a speech. When the crowds left, a strong wind arose. The wind blew almost all the flowers into the Confederate section. After that the separation was never repeated. Many believed all this was due to divine intervention. Commencement Week This past week we celebrated graduation of our eighth graders and our high school seniors. The month of May is always my favorite month, first and foremost because it is dedicated to our Blessed Mother, but also

because of graduations. It’s a month of such great hope for our youth as they begin a new chapter in their lives. So, I extend my wishes to all our graduates. One of my favorite things to do this month is to scan the commencement addresses at various colleges and universities. The speeches are filled with hope and optimism and can be inspirational for us all. Here’s a little snippet from Denzel Washington’s commencement address of four years ago to Dillard University: “Put God first in everything you do … Everything that I have is by the grace of God, understand that. It's a gift … I didn't always stick with him, but He stuck with me … While you're [on your knees], say thank you. Thank you for grace, thank you for mercy, thank you for understanding, thank you for wisdom, thank you for parents, thank you for love, thank you for kindness, thank you for humility, thank you for peace, thank you for prosperity. Say thank you in advance for what is already yours … True desire in the heart for anything good is God's proof to you sent beforehand that it's already yours … When you get it, reach back, pull someone else up.” Amen Denzel!

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Kaim, S.T.L.

Calling All Artists—

Help Design our New Parish Logo! Our parish council has decided to involve the whole parish in the design of a new logo. So if you have an artistic flair—and especially if you are in this business—why not take some time to create a design that would be used in your parish and school? We hope to be able to add this to T-shirts, bags for the food pantry and a whole host of other items that would help get our name out into the community, and hopefully, plant seeds of faith. The winner will receive a nice gift. Your submissions, and any questions you might have, should be submitted to Dianna Cruden, our Business and Office Manager at [email protected]. The deadline to submit a logo is Friday, May 31.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2019 Pre-school through 1st grade Mark your calendars for June 17 - 21 for an exciting VBS: ROAR! Life is Wild, God is good! Register now! We need VOLUNTEERS! What do you know about abortion in the US - How many abor-tions occur in the US? - 19% of all pregnancies (excluding miscar-riages) end in abortion. In 2014, 926,200 abortions were per-formed, down 12% from 1.06 million in 2011. Since Roe V Wade (1973), over 60 million abortions have occurred. Who gets abortions? - Each year, 1.7% of women aged 15-44 have an abortion; At least half of American women will experience an unintended pregnancy by age 45; 1 in 4 women will have an abortion by age 30; Women aged 20-29 account for 57% of all abortions; 51% of women who have abortions had used a con-traceptive method in the month they got pregnant, most com-monly condoms (27%) or a hormonal method (17%). Women who obtain abortions - 61% have at least one child, 45% are unmarried and not cohabitating, 42% have incomes below 100% of the federal poverty level, 37% identify as Protestant and 28% identify as Catholics. Why do women get abortions? - 75% say that having a baby would interfere with work, school, or the ability to care for de-pendents, 75% say they cannot afford a child, 50% say they do not want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner. Fewer than 0.5% percent of women who have abortions cite rape as the primary reason for the abortion or they became pregnant as a result of incest. When do abortions occur? - One third of abortions occur at 6 weeks of pregnancy or earlier, 89% of abortions occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, 2% of abortions occur between 14-20 weeks gestation, 3% of abortions occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy. (The statistical data is reported by the Centers for Disease Control and the Guttmacher Institute. https://tinyurl.com/yyd6qu5o) We want to thank all of you who picked up a baby bottle in the past two weeks. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated by the sisters who care for the unwed mothers, and their babies at the Madonna Renewal Center in Freeport in the Rockford Dio-cese. If you were unable to get a bottle, do-nations can still be accepted at the Harte Cen-ter. Bottles will be collected the weekend of Father’s Day, June 16. Again, thank you so much for your generosity.

Memorial Day Prayer

May the Lord bless and keep them! by Rob Kerby

As we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy every day, we think of how they have followed in the footsteps of your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Please hold our ser-vicemen and women in Your strong arms. Cover them with Your sheltering grace and Your presence as they stand in the gap for our protection.

We also remember the families of our troops. We ask for Your unique blessings to fill their homes, and we pray Your peace, provision, and strength will fill their lives. May the members of our armed forc-es be supplied with courage to face each day and may they trust in the Lord's mighty power to accomplish each task. Let our military brothers and sisters feel our love and support. In the name of Jesus. Amen.

Mary’s Messengers Rosary Group Join us Thursday, June 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the Msgr. Bales Meeting Room in the Harte Center. We hope to see some new faces! Come on in, and learn the art of making a rope-and-bead rosary. We supply the Adoration Chapel with the rosaries we make, and also send them across the United States to those who re-quest them. It is a wonderful ministry to be a part of.
