15th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year B
As I begin my time here at Visitation, I look forward to everything that the Lord has in store for us, with all of the joys and sorrows that comes in this life. I guess it is part of human nature, but we can tend to focus on just the sorrows, the bad things that happen, the struggles that we are forced to undergo. But, our Lord, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, gives us what we need to help us navigate through this life, so that we can be with Him forever in Heaven. I think the most important of these gifts is the Liturgy, most especially the Sacrifice of the Mass. In the coming weeks I will be touching upon different aspects of the Eucharistic Liturgy.
This week I want to briefly look at who the Mass is for. We go through all this time and preparation each week, especially for major feasts and celebrations, to make the Liturgy as beautiful as we can. Who is it for primarily? To whom do we do it for? The answer is, we do it for God. The Mass is, primarily, all about God and His son Jesus Christ. The Mass is not primarily done for us at all. The Mass is not about the priest, nor is it about the congregation.
This may be surprising, or shocking for some to hear. The primary reason we come to Mass on Sundays is to offer sacrifice to God. That is why we are here. The Mass is, firstly, a sacrifice. The people come to offer themselves to God, which is symbolized in the bread and the wine that is brought up to the altar at the offertory. As the bread and the wine are brought forth, we should make an offering of ourselves as well. As the priest presents the bread and the wine to God, we should make an interior offering of ourselves. The people offer themselves to God at Mass. The priest, then offers the Body and Blood of Christ to God, on behalf of the people.
So the Mass is, first and foremost, all about God. It is not about me. It is not about you. It is not about the music, or the singers, or the musicians. It is not about the children, or other particular groups of people. The Mass is not about the boring homilies that I give. Mass is not even about Visitation Parish. Mass is, firstly, all about God, and offering sacrifice to Him. To put it as simply as I can, the Mass is all about Jesus.
