Flower, who is one of 12 slot holders for The Everest, told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday he was playing a waiting game in the lead up to the lucrative race, which will take place on 14 October.

He said he did not want to be tied to a horse four months out from the race without knowing if the runner had returned in good form and was worthy of a spot in the weight-for-age race.

“The way I am attacking The Everest now is that if I thought if I could secure a top-class horse like (US filly) Lady Aurelia, for example, I would take the chance (by locking into a horse), but now that there are already seven slot holders there, I will wait,” Flower said.

A part-owner in Chauffeur, who was purchased for $1,600,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Flower said the valuable colt was in the early stages of his spring preparation with new trainers Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes.

Previously trained by Gerald Ryan, Chauffeur won once from six starts as a juvenile and was also runner-up to confirmed The Everest runner Houtzen (I Am Invincible) in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast in January.

Flower said if Chauffeur, whose early spring aim is the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on 9 September, could prove to be the ideal horse for The Everest.

“The Hawkes’s are extremely happy with where Chauffeur is at, they are telling me to sit back and hang on because if he can make his mark (in the spring) he could be suited in a race like that at weight-for-age over 1200 metres,” the owner said.

“He has form around Houtzen, who is the $15 fourth favourite for The

Everest, and he is up to the mark providing the race is run on a dry track.“I have spoken the other owners of the horse and at this point in time

I am keeping the slot open for Chauffeur.”Chauffeur won on debut at Rosehill on 10 December before finishing

third to From Within (Not A Single Doubt) at Canterbury on 31 December, prior to coming from back in the field to be beaten half a length by Houtzen in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.

The colt, who is a son of 2006 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Mirror Mirror (Dehere), was then plagued by rain-affected tracks during the Sydney autumn carnival. He ran fifth in the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), ninth in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and was again unplaced on a Heavy 8 surface in the Inglis Sires’ (registered as ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m).

The highest-priced yearling at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale in 2016, Chauffeur is owned by Flower’s Jadeskye Racing, B K Racing and Breeding, Nick Vass Bloodstock, Werrett Bloodstock and the colt’s breeder, John Singleton’s Strawberry Hill Stud.

“You could see at his very first start that he was doing everything on pure ability as he wasn’t developed and was so raw, but he was fit and was ready, so we raced him,” Flower said.

“John Peakfield, who is (part-owner) John Singleton’s vet, saw him two days before the Slipper and saw him (this week) and he said, ‘this horse looks outstanding. He has developed. We are on song here’.

“But he just needs a dry track. If the track has a spit of rain on it his wheels will spin. It’s bizarre (for a Snitzel) to be like that.”

Saturday 15 July 2017 Flower Eyes The Everest With Chauffeur

Flower said Chauffeur had his first gallop for the Hawkes’s at Rosehill on Thursday and would make a decision on what direction the colt took closer to the Golden Rose Stakes.

The Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on 14 October, the same day as The Everest, and the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on 4 November were also being considered for Chauffeur.

“I remember speaking to Scott Kennedy and Peter V’Landys (from Racing NSW) and they gave me the spiel about (The Everest) and the first thing I thought about, with the timing of it, was Chauffeur,” he said.

“It’s a weight-for-age race, he will be a three-year-old colt, and I thought the race was for him, but then my business mind thought, ‘let’s own the slot and I can wait for as long as I want’. Only 12 horses can race in it, so I’ve got the gold, let’s just sit and wait.”

The Hawkes’s are already assured of a representative in The Everest, with brilliant triple T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) to run in the race for slot holder Greg Ingham of GPI Racing.

Flower remains open-minded about what horse will run in his slot for The Everest and would deal with fellow owners or with a stud if they had a horse capable of taking out the valuable $5,800,000 first prize.

He said The Everest would become one of Australia’s premier ‘stallion-

making’ races in the near future and was immediately supportive of the concept when briefed about it by Racing NSW officials earlier this year.

“If you have a three-year-old colt, for instance like Chauffeur, who hasn’t won a stakes race before but wins The Everest he is a $50,000 service fee stallion already,” Flower said.

“That was what was appealing to me about The Everest because I try to make stallions. But then I also thought, it’s worth $10,000,000 and I think weight-for-age racing is fantastic.”

Six horses are already confirmed for The Everest including the Toby Edmonds-trained Houtzen, who will run for slot holder Aquis Farm, and the Gary Portell-trained Golden Slipper Stakes winner She WIll Reign (Manhattan Rain).

She Will Reign, who won four of her five starts as a two-year-old, will run under the banner of Chinese owner YuLong Investment, while sales company Inglis is supporting its Classic Yearling Sale graduate Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) with a slot in the race.

The Matt Dale-trained multiple Group One-placed sprinter will be joined by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained English (Encosta De Lago), who is being backed by Tabcorp, in the race.

The Star, one of 12 The Everest slot holders, last week announced it had struck a deal with Lindsay Park for one of the stable’s sprinters to run under casino group’s banner. The David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig stable have potential candidates such as The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vega Magic (Lope De Vega) and a host of rising three-year-olds.

They include Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Catchy (Fastnet Rock), Formality (Fastnet Rock) and Coolmore Stud-owned Tulip (Pierro).

Another Everest slot holder, Coolmore Stud is expected to run unbeaten European three-year-old Caravaggio (Scat Daddy), who won the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) last start at Royal Ascot for Ballydoyle-based trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The US-bred colt, who is by the late stallion Scat Daddy (Johannesburg), is expected to run in the Darley July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) tonight for which he is the $2.10 favourite to remain unbeaten in seven race starts.

Meanwhile, Chris Waller Racing also holds a slot for The Everest, with a horse to represent Sydney’s premier trainer yet to be confirmed, while owner Max Whitby, James Harron Bloodstock and the Australian Turf Club are also yet to commit to a horse for the inaugural race.

Among Harron’s potential The Everest runners would be rising three-year-old Pariah (Redoute’s Choice), who was runner up to Catchy (Fastnet Rock) in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Pariah, who is now part-owned by Arrowfield Stud, barrier trialled on Monday at Randwick ahead of a Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) campaign.

The Snowdens also have Group One winner Russian Revolution (Snitzel), a stallion prospect part-owned by Newgate Farm and China Horse Club, as a potential candidate for The Everest.

The Bryce Heys-trained sprinter Spieth (Thorn Park) has also been touted as a potential contender for the race, with connections planning to see the rising five-year-old entire resume in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick on 2 September.

Daytona Grey Given Chance In MonashRising eight-year-old Daytona Grey (Artie Schiller) has staved off retirement after overcoming feet issues which have plagued his career and will take his place in today’s Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield. The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas-trained gelding resumed from a long spell with a first up fifth at Morphettville on 24 June, an effort that prompted the partnership to send the gelding to Melbourne. “There was a race at Morphettville Parks on Saturday over 1250 metres and I had three (nominated) in it. But I thought he went well enough to have a crack at a race like this,” Macdonald said. “It’s pretty hard to line up the form and the good horses might not be fully wound-up, who knows.”

Apprentice Stockdale To Ride Revolving DoorThe winter campaign of talented three-year-old Revolving Door (Sebring) continues at Caulfield today, with trainer Clinton McDonald turning to apprentice jockey Brandon Stockdale in a bid to make it two wins from three starts this preparation. Stockdale claims three kilograms and takes over from Dwayne Dunn, who rode him to second over 1400 metres on 1 July. The

gelding resumed on 17 June at Moonee Valley with a half-length victory. "He's going really well and certainly hasn't gone backwards since his last start," McDonald said. "He strips fitter again for Saturday and he gets in well with the claim and hopefully Brandon can give him a good ride. He gets in with 55kg after the claim and hopefully that makes the difference at the end."

Cowan Happy With Airalign Ahead Of CaulfieldCranbourne-based Tom Cowan was left scratching his head after Airalign (Align) put in a below part performance at Flemington on 10 June but a third at Caulfield last start has seen the hobby trainer persevere with his winter preparation. The rising eight-year-old will again be ridden by apprentice Ben Thompson in the OTI Racing Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield today against in-form mare Schism (Reaan). "He's come through that last run OK and I'm more than happy with him going into this race,” Cowan told Racing.com. "There are three or four of them that have got a good chance, but I think my horse is right there with them."

over Craig Williams, has joined forces with Godolphin’s new Australian trainer James Cummings with the mount on promising two-year-old Bandipur (Commands). Mertens will ride the Commands (Danehill) colt in a 2YO Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield today after winning first up by eight lengths at Moe on 24 June over 1100 metres. "Obviously he won quite well at Moe, he's an on-pace horse, he makes his own luck so he should be a pretty easy ride, touch wood," Mertens told Racing.com. "Hopefully [he will] get the right run from the gate and hopefully he's finishing off."

Slightly Sweet Chasing Stakes WinFive-year-old mare Slightly Sweet (Charge Forward), who was third last start in the Civic Stakes (Listed, 1350m), will be attempting to enhance her breeding value in what trainer Jason Coyle hopes is a victory in today’s ATC Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Rosehill. The mare is destined for the breeding barn and barrier 13 has dented the trainer’s confidence heading into the $150,000 race. “I’d have loved to drawn soft to get that nice run off the speed somewhere,” Coyle said. “She’s probably going to need a little bit of luck in that first furlong but based on her last start she’s got to be some hope.”

Tongue-Tie On Clear The BeachGosford trainer Greg McFarlane is confident Clear The Beach (Sharkbite) can bounce back from a below par performance at Randwick on 24 June when beaten 19 lengths. The four-year-old gelding, who runs in a 1200 metre handicap at Rosehill today, has since won a barrier trial at Wyong on 5 July. “Clear The Beach got his tongue back and over the bit. We’ve dropped him back in distance to try and get his confidence back and then go up again to 1400m later on,” McFarlane said. “He is a progressive horse and a Saturday quality horse but still has to go to the next level yet. If he comes out and runs to his ability he is going to be right in the mix at the finish.”

Cahill Takes Ride On Araldo JuniorJockey Michael Cahill has elected to ride the Mike Moroney-trained Araldo Junior (Medicean) at the Sunshine Coast today instead of Queensland Cup (Listed, 3200m) rival Emerald City (Bernardini) despite his strong association with trainer David Vandyke. Cahill had the option to ride the Vandyke-trained Emerald City, who was fifth in the Caloundra Cup (Listed, 2400m), in today’s race but will partner Araldo Junior, who was fifth in the ATC Winter Cup (Listed, 2400m) at Rosehill on 1 July. “Araldo Junior has won on good and soft tracks so it seemed the right way to go,” Cahill said. “His trainer Michael Moroney is a very good judge of where to place his stayers and he has won the (Queensland) Cup previously.”

Kobi Creek GIven Chance In Queensland CupSunshine Coast trainer Stuart Kendrick is hoping the fact the Queensland Cup is being run on his home track, instead of Eagle Farm, can assist veteran stayer Kobi Creek (Shadow Creek) handle the step up in class. A six-year-old gelding, Kobi Creek was sent to Kendrick earlier this preparation with the Queensland Cup in mind and ran fifth last start at the Gold Coast over 1800 metres in Benchmark 70 grade on 5 July as his final lead up run to the 3200 metre feature. “Over the years the Queensland Cup has been won by roughies with light weights. But whether Kobi Creek is up to some of the southern horses is the question,” Kendrick said.

Tumbler On Trial For SydneyTalented but injury-plagued mare Tumbler (Time Thief) will return from another setback at the Sunshine Coast today, a race trainer Barry Lockwood hopes will set the five-year-old up for a Sydney campaign. A winner of six of her eight starts, Tumbler has not raced since finishing last of six in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm when failing to handle the wet track. She has since won a Sunshine Coast 850 metre barrier trial on 4 July ahead of today’s 2MW Handicap (1000m). “It was my fault running her in the Victory Stakes as I had it in the back of my mind she might not handle Eagle Farm the way it raced,” Lockwood said. “I’ve got no concrete plans with her presently but she’ll have one or two more runs and if I can find a black-type race for her in Sydney during the spring then she’ll go down.” Super Too To Resume At RandwickStakes-placed filly Super Too (Hinchinbrook), a three-year-old half-sister to former star Singapore sprinter Super One (I Am Invincible), yesterday dominated an 806 metre Warwick Farm barrier trial, winning by 11 and three quarter lengths. Trained by Marc Conners, Super Too went straight to the lead under apprentice Deanne Payna to defeat the Clarry Conners-trained Saskia Rose (Swiss Ace) by the big margin in heat three in a time of 46.30 seconds. Super Too, who was runner up to Spright (Hinchinbrook) in the Red Roses Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) last November, is expected to resume at Randwick on 22 July. Click here to view the Warwick Farm barrier trial replays

Keen Array Wins Flemington Jump OutMultiple stakes-winning sprinter Keen Array (Bel Esprit), who is trained by Lindsay Park, yesterday won a Flemington jump out over 800 metres. The rising five-year-old sat off the Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) winner Ducimus (Snitzel) in heat two before hitting the line late to narrowly win the jump out in 48.56 seconds. Keen Array has not raced since last November when unplaced in the Winterbottom Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), which was won by Takedown (Stratum), while the Team Hawkes-

trained rising three-year-old colt Ducimus appears to have returned well. He led the jump out early before coasting to the line under a tight grip from the rider. Click here to view the Flemington jump out replays

Future Unclear For Hidden PearlThe immediate future of stakes-winning Queensland sprinter Hidden Pearl (Hidden Dragon) remains uncertain, with the six-year-old mare’s owners considering their options with the broodmare prospect. Trained by Barry Lockwood, the Listed winner has won eight of her 21 race starts and has not raced since 3 June at Doomben. Lockwood revealed yesterday that the mare’s owners were considering whether to sell Hidden Pearl or keep her and breed from her themselves. “Her owners are deciding whether to sell her or put her to stud as a racing and breeding proposition,” Lockwood said. “If she’s not sold she could race while in foal for a couple of months which is a successful and common practice.”

Ballarat-Based Track Riders BannedTwo international trackwork riders have been banned for returning positive drug tests in Victoria. Frenchmen Pierre Boudvillain and Enzo Mezenguel were banned for two months and six weeks respectively after pleading guilty to having a banned substance in their system. Stewards did not name the substance, charging the pair under AR81A, which covers alcohol and other drugs. The pair were tested during trackwork at Ballarat on 26 June and were stood down on 6 July. Both will be required to return negative drug tests before they can resume handling horses.

Stayer Pacorus Set For Mile TestTrainer Chris Wood believes talented stayer Pacorus (Tavistock) can be competitive at Te Rapa today on an Open Handicap (1600m) despite carrying 60 kilograms and dropping back from 2100 metres. The five-year-old gelding has won two of his past three starts including a Kiwifruit Cup (2100m) at Tauranga on 24 June. “He’ll drop back to a mile and that will keep him up to the mark before we head to the Taumarunui Gold Cup in a fortnight’s time,” Wood said. “In saying that, I’m sure he’s going to be very competitive (today).”

Hawke’s Bay Aim For RihannaPromising juvenile Princess Rihanna (Showcasing) is being aimed at the Hawke’s Bay carnival in the new season by co-trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott. The filly won on debut last November before finishing fourth in four consecutive stakes races. After ending a frustrating campaign on 16 March when fourth in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), which was won by stablemate Summer Passage (Snitzel), Princess Rihanna was spelled. “We’ll probably have her ready to go in the Gold Trail Stakes,” O’Sullivan said.

Trentham Meeting AbandonedToday’s Trentham race meeting was yesterday called off by officials after 120 millimetres of rain fell on the track in 48 hours, leaving the surface waterlogged and deemed unsafe for racing. The meeting has since been transferred to Hastings on 20 July due to the water-logged Trentham surface being out of action. "Obviously it would have been preferable for the races to be run at Trentham but the switch to Hastings is a much better outcome than losing two of our most significant jumping races,” NZTR general manager of racing Matthew Hall, said. "It will also help those horses preparing for the Grand National meeting at Riccarton.”

Ring To Join Trelawney StudAccomplished equine industry participant Cameron Ring, who undertook a New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Keith and Faith Taylor Equine Scholarship, will take up a role with Trelawney Stud. Ring has spent the past six months in Ireland undertaking the Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeders’ Course, graduating with honours. “Cameron was a fantastic ambassador for New Zealand and the NZTBA and he created a very good impression with all our staff, guest lecturers and on our visits to various equine establishments,” said Sally Carroll, of the Irish National Stud.

Booming Delight In Peak ConditionJockey Sam Clipperton is confident Booming Delight (Fastnet Rock) can continue his good form when he runs in tomorrow’s Sha Tin Mile (1600m). The four-year-old gelding won the Lion Rock Trophy (Gr 3, 1600m) on 4 June and Clipperton believes he has improved since that run. “This season, he’s really raised the bar. He’s won over 2000 metres and he obviously ran in the Derby, but I feel that his best trip is the 1600 metres so if he keeps climbing the ladder like he has this season, there’s no reason he can’t end up in a Hong Kong Mile,” said Clipperton. “He’s a horse that can definitely keep improving into next season and we may well see him at the international meeting in December.”

International

14 Group One Winners For War FrontThe Claiborne Farm-based stallion War Front (Danzig) sired his 14th Group One winner when the Aidan O’Brien-trained Roly Poly (3 f ex Misty For Me by Galileo) ran out a comfortable winner of the Falmouth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket yesterday. The three-year-old filly, who won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) on the same card last year, was tucked in just behind the leaders by Ryan Moore in the early stages of the contest. As the field quickened inside the final furlong she was sent to the lead by Moore

and powerfully drew clear to eventually beat Wuheida (Dubawi) by a length and a quarter with Arabian Hope (Distorted Humor) another half a length adrift in third. War Front has sired 61 stakes winners in total and he stands for a fee of $250,000.

Clemmie Lands Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes The Aidan O’Brien-trained Clemmie (2 f Galileo - Meow by Storm Cat) proved too strong for her rivals when she won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket yesterday. The two-year-old filly, who is a sister to multiple Group One winner and stablemate Churchill, quickened smartly away from the field inside the final furlong to beat Nyaleti (Arch) by a length and three quarters with another half a length back to Mamba Noire (Wootton Bassett) in third. This was a second stakes victory for the daughter of Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), having taken out the Grangecon Stud Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at the Curragh on her last start on 2 July. Roly Poly is one of 244 stakes winners for Coolmore’s champion sire Galileo.

107 For Oasis DreamThe David Simcock-trained Mystic Dawn (3 f ex Frivolity by Pivotal) ran out a narrow winner of the Summer Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at York yesterday and in the process provided the Juddmonte Farm-based sire Oasis Dream (Green Desert) with his 107th stakes winner. The three-year-old filly came into the race having not won since winning her maiden last August and yesterday she put in a brave performance to beat Queen Kindly (Frankel) by a short head with another five lengths back to Eartha Kitt (Pivotal) in third. Oasis Dream stands at Juddmonte Farms’ Banstead Manor Stud at a fee of £50,000.

Four For Intense FocusThe Eoghan O'Neill-trained Cold Stare (3 g ex Ziria by Danehill Dancer) stayed on stoutly to narrowly win the Prix Roland de Chambure (Listed, 7f) at Saint-Cloud yesterday and in the process provided Intense Focus (Giant’s Causeway) with his fourth stakes winner. The three-year-old gelding, who is now unbeaten in two career starts having broken his maiden at Maisons-Laffitte on 21 June, beat Ghost Serge (Zebedee) by a head with another length back to Thewayiam (Thewayyouare) in third.

Impala Makes 150,000gns

At the time of going to press, Impala, an unraced filly by Oasis Dream was topping the final day of trade at the Tattersalls July Sale at Park Paddocks in Newmarket after Rabbah Bloodstock went to 150,00 guineas for the Juddmonte Farm consigned filly. Catalogued as Lot 705, she is out of the winning Zafonic (Gone West) mare Imbabala, making her a half-sister to Group One winner Zambezi Sun (Dansili), Group Two winner Kalabar (Kahyasi) and Listed winner Zero Gravity (Dansili). "She's been bought by Saeed Manana to join the Rabbah Bloodstock broodmare band," James Tate told the Racing Post. "It's a beautiful page and we look forward to finding a cover for her next year."

Ghazali Active AgainAfter purchasing six lots on Thursday, Gassim Ghazali was back on the buying bench yesterday, purchasing Don Valentino (Dandy Man), who has won two of his five career starts when trained by David O’Meara, for 100,000 guineas. The gelding, who was consigned by his former trainer, was catalogued as Lot 748

and he is out of the multiple Listed-winning mare My Funny Valentine (Mukaddamah). "He is a progressive horse and we wanted to stay for him," said Ghazali, "and we like stock by the sire."

McKeever And Ferguson Buy DoddinelAustralian-based bloodstock agents Johnny and Sue McKeever, who joined forces with James Ferguson earlier this year, purchased Doddinel, an unraced filly by Dansili (Danehill), for 55,000 guineas from the Juddmonte Farms draft. Catalogued as Lot 707, the filly is out of the placed Far Shores, a Distant View (Mr. Prospector) half-sister to late Coolmore sire Danehill (Danzig), Grade Two winner Eagle Eyed (Danzig), Group / Grade Three winners Shibboleth (Danzig) and Harpia (Danzig). "She's for Les Ward," Johnny McKeever told the Racing Post. "It's an excellent page - she's obviously inbred to Razyana - and for me, she was the pick of the physicals at the Juddmonte draft." For a full report of the final day of trade read tomorrow’s issue of ANZ. Click here to view the sales results.

Doyle Banned For 15 DaysJames Doyle will be forced to miss the end of July after receiving a 15-day ban for misuse of the whip. Doyle was referred to the BHA under the totting-up procedure for his misuse of the whip while on board on Barney Roy (Excelebration) in the Coral Eclipse (Gr 1, 1m2f) last week. "What can you do? It is what it is and the rules are in place. I didn't adapt to them as well as I should've done after coming back from riding in Australia for five and a half months where it's a very different style of riding, especially with the whip.” Doyle’s ban will start on 21 July.

Dortmund Back In TrainingDual Grade One winner Dortmund (Big Brown), who was retired from racing last April, is back in training with Art Sherman. While no specific targets have been earmarked for the Kaleem Shah-owned five-year-old entire, Sherman said he could get a timed workout in 30 days. "It wasn't good timing, because the breeding season was already underway," Shah told Bloodhorse.com of Dortmund's retirement in April. "We would have had to wait until next year. He just needed a little time out, it looks like, so he's doing good now. We have nothing to do until the next (breeding season).”

Illuminant RetiredGrade One winner Illuminant (Quality Road) has been retired from racing after she emerged from a recent workout with some minor signs of discomfort. The Michael McCarthy-trained five-year-old won the Gamely Stakes (Gr 1, 9f) at Santa Anita on 30 May and was most recently seen winning the Monrovia Stakes (Gr 2, 6.5f). "Illuminant was a brilliant filly," McCarthy told Bloodhorse.com. "She did some things in the morning time and come game time that only extraordinary racehorses can do. I have been very fortunate to be around some elite fillies and she ranks right up there with the best of them. We are sad to see her leave the barn, because she is so special to me, my family, and our team, but we are proud she heads back to Kentucky in good order and ready to go on and tackle her new career as a broodmare."

Diane Nelson DiesFormer jockey Diane Nelson, who rode more than 1,000 winners during a 21-year career in the US, died in New York last week. Nelson, whose career was cut short by back problems in 2007, reportedly died on 5 July; some reports said she was 54, but the Daily Racing Form and New York Times listed her as 51. "I don't know anything about the circumstances, but I heard from several people she died 5 July," former jockey Abby Fuller, told Bloodhorse. "Diane was beautiful inside and out and she was a good rider too.” No cause of death has been reported.

Jewel House, a winning son of Dubawi (Dubai Millennium) topped the second day of the Tattersalls July Sale, where horses in training and

untried stock were on offer. Qatar-based trainer Ibrahim Al-Malki had to

fight off fierce competition from fellow Qatari Gassim Ghazali, who was standing with Will Douglass, but he eventually managed to secure the colt for 215,000gns from the Juddmonte Farms draft.

Catalogued as Lot 552, the three-year-old colt is out of the Dansili (Danehill) mare Arizona Jewel, herself a winning sister to Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner Riposte.

Arizona Jewel is also a half-sister to dual Group/Grade One winner Powerscourt (Sadler’s Wells), Group Three winner Last Train (Rail Link) and Listed winner Kind (Danehill), who is best known as the dam of Frankel (Galileo).

Jewel House Tops Day Two Of Tattersalls July Sale

"He's for a new owner, Abdulatif Hussain Al-Emadi," Al-Malki told the Racing Post.

Al-Malki has a stable of 70 thoroughbreds and Arabians and finished fourth in the most recent Qatari trainers' championship.

"He'll ship straight away to Qatar and, if all goes well, he could be one for the Qatar Derby. He's very well bred and we like the fact he's by Dubawi. You never know, one day he could stand as a stallion in Qatar."

Al-Malki said he had been impressed with Jewel House when he broke his maiden on the fifth of his six starts for John Gosden at Newmarket in April.

"He goes on good to firm, which is important," Al-Malki said. "Yes, maybe he was disappointing on his last start [when eighth of nine in a handicap at Ascot] but he had good form before and we believe in him."

Ghazali did not leave the sale empty-handed, taking home home six lots for a total spend of 369,000 guineas.

The most expensive of his purchases was Vona, a filly by Dark Angel (Acclamation) from Richard Fahey’s Musley Bank Stables draft, which he bought for 140,000 guineas.

Catalogued as Lot 601, the filly won the Marygate Stakes (Listed, 5f) last May and is from the same family as Group One winner and sire Rail Link (Dansili) and Group Three winner Wharf (Storm Bird).

Five-time winner Laidback Romeo (Kodiac) realised 115,000 guineas after being purchased by John and Jake Warren from Clive Cox’s Beechdown Farm Stables.

Laidback Romeo, who was catalogued as Lot 535, is out of the Scrimshaw (Gulch) mare Belmora, who is a half-sister to Grade Three winner Tippity Witch (Affirmed) and Listed winner Senor Benny (Benny The Dip).

"There's a plan afoot!" Jake Warren told the Racing Post. "He's for a private client and will be heading to Bahrain eventually, but we may continue to race him here in the short term as he's race-fit at the moment.

"He has the right profile for Bahrain - he goes on fast ground, sees the mile out well, he is sound and is by a tough stallion. He's a beautiful horse and, for a five-year-old, he's also lightly raced."

Earlier in the day, Richard Knight Bloodstock went to 110,000 guineas to secure five-time

Catalogued as Lot 474, the colt is out of the Listed winning mare Splashdown (Falbrav), making Baydar a half-brother to Group Three winner Aktabantay (Oasis Dream), who was also trained by Hugo Palmer.

Knight told the Racing Post that Baydar’s new owners will keep the colt in training with Palmer.

"He's going back to Hugo but for a new owner," said Knight. "He was a good horse last year and hopefully we can get him back to that. He has lost his way a little, but he's a high-class horse on his day."

This was second time the colt had been through the Tattersalls ring, having been previously purchased by Rob Speers, racing and bloodstock manager to owner Ibrahim Araci, for 85,000 guineas as a yearling in 2014.

Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) named Horse of the Year at Hong Kong’s Champion Awards.

Rapper Dragon claimed the Hong Kong Horse of the Year award at a sparkling ceremony held at the Grand Hyatt last night. Hong Kong’s standout four-year-old made history during the season when he became the first horse to win all three legs of Hong Kong’s Four-Year-Old Classic Series.

John Moore’s stable star had an outstanding sophomore Hong Kong campaign with four wins from six starts before his sad demise following the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m). The gelding, who raced in the blue and red silks of owner Albert Hung, improved sharply after a smart seasonal appearance at December’s Hong Kong International Race meeting, displaying superiority over his peers in the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) and Hong Kong Classic Cup (Listed, 1800m), and then completing a sweep of Hong Kong’s three-race Four-Year-Old Classic Series in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m).

“This is a really classy animal,” Moore said after the Derby victory. “I’ll call him my champion because he’s won me a Derby.”

Rapper Dragon was also named the Champion Middle-distance Horse, based on his brilliant performances in the Hong Kong Classic Cup and the BMW Hong Kong Derby. The ascendant chestnut then impressed again when taking on a group of proven elders in the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) to land his second Group race win in his career, having won the Lion Rock Trophy (Gr 3, 1600m) as a three-year-old during his first season in Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, Rapper Dragon also secured 57.5 per cent of the public vote to claim the Most Popular Horse title.

Beauty Only (Holy Roman Emperor) was named the season’s Champion Miler. The Tony Cruz-trained six-year-old won two of his nine starts, including the Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Wealth Management Jockey Club

trained stalwart won the Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (Gr 1, 2400m), one of only three mile and a half races staged in Hong Kong, to seal the award.

Premiere (Dylan Thomas), a three-year-old from the John Size stable with three eye-catching wins from 12 starts, claimed the Champion Griffin Award.

Size sealed the champion trainer title for a ninth time and Joao Moreira the champion jockey title for a third consecutive season.

The season’s Most Popular Jockey and the winner of the Tony Cruz Award will be revealed during racing at tomorrow’s season finale at Sha Tin. Most Improved Horse of the Year will also be awarded on that day.

The recently-retired champions Able Friend (Shamardal) and Aerovelocity were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards in recognition of their great contributions to Hong Kong racing.

Mile (Gr 2, 1600m). The Holy Roman Emperor (Danehill) gelding performed consistently throughout the season, finishing second on three occasions, including in the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), the Chairman’s Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m) and the Celebration Cup (Gr 3, 1400m). At his latest outing he finished a creditable sixth in the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m) in Japan.

The Champion Sprinter award went to the retired Aerovelocity (Pins), who also won this award in the 2014/15 season. The Pins (Snippets) gelding is rated as one of the toughest horses ever to have competed on the Hong Kong circuit. Aerovelocity started this season with two encouraging runs, finishing third in both the Premier Bowl (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Wealth Management Jockey Club Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m), and then bounced back for a second triumph in the 2016 edition of the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m). He remains the only locally-trained horse to have won Group One races in three different jurisdictions.

2015/16 Hong Kong Horse of the Year Werther (Tavistock) claimed the Champion Stayer title this season. The John Moore-

Every time Major Tom (Darci Brahma) wins a race, trainer Mark Walker can’t help getting a bit nostalgic.

The five-time New Zealand and one-time Singapore champion trainer was responsible for both Major Tom’s mum and dad, Spin ‘N Grin (Spinning World) and Darci Brahma (Danehill).

Obviously, the sire needs no introduction, with Walker having on countless occasions spoken in glowing terms about the multiple-Group One winner and now champion sire, but less is known about Spinning World (Nureyev) mare Spin ‘N Grin.

Walker said she was a precocious mare who had a short but successful career as a racehorse before starting broodmare duties.

“I trained Major Tom’s mother. She won a Group Two race at only her fourth start, the Eight Carat Classic,” he said.

“It is a very good race over the mile. She also ran second in the Group One Breeders Stakes, also over the mile.

“Of course, I also trained Darci Brahma as well. So this horse is well-bred and is pretty special.”

Walker thanked the owner John Galvin of Fortuna NZ Racing Stable for his patience during the time Major Tom had to be tipped out. The previous two-time winner last raced on 31 March when a disappointing eighth to Billy Mojo (Mastercraftsman).

“He did very well at his first campaign, but he came back a bit shinsore,” said Walker.

Micheal Lee @anz_news

Winning family affair keeps Walker Grinning

“It was just a sign of immaturity. A big thanks to John Galvin and the other partners for their patience.

“I put him aside, and he’s come back good. I would say he’s better than Class 4, so he was a bit underclass in a way tonight.

“We had a bit of rain which dampened our confidence a little, but Zawari timed his run very well.

“The 1200 metre was just nice for a first-up run but on his breeding, he will get better over more ground no doubt.”

Not one of the best away, Major Tom was dropped at the rear, ahead of only Jackfish (Exceed And Excel) and taking a cart behind Run It Twice (Bradbury's Luck) for most of the 1200 metre journey of the SGP $60,000 Class 4 Division race before being clicked up for another gear from the 750 metre.

With Zawari getting a little busier in the saddle, Major Tom started to improve with a looping run rather effortlessly as he was peeled out three wide while Platoon (Keeper) was doing his best to hold sway at the head of affairs.

Lucky Giant (Starcraft) was the first to collar Platoon and looked well on his way towards a return to the winner’s circle, but the threat hailing from Major Tom was becoming more and more evident on the outside.

Though laying in under pressure, Major Tom finished the best to score by half a length from the fast-finishing Lucky Justice (Purrealist) with Lucky Giant third another neck away in third. The winning time was 1:11.08 for the 1200 metres on the Short Course.

“He was lazy at the start. I had to give him a bit of a dig to get going as the boss wanted me to go early,” said Zawari.

“At the 600 metres, I took him to the outside and though he was hanging in badly, he was very strong to the line.”

Major Tom has taken his stakes earnings past the SGP $130,000 mark for the Fortuna NZ Racing Stable.

S T E V E M O R A N

@anz_news

TRAVEL DIARY - PART FOUR Forgive me, Steve asks, that I didn’t quite manage to get to The Hipódromo de

Monterrico in Lima, which is apparently not bad, but I’ve got a better tip for you.

Racing in Peru? Well, I will tell you more when I return to this amazing part of the world which I’m captivated by despite missing out on Machu Picchu. And the smell of eucalyptus will have you feeling at home. I’m not sure it’s true but the locals insist the eucalypt is natively only to Australia and Peru.

Oh, the horses? Peruvian Thoroughbreds have won Group I races in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, and Venezuela which is not bad given they produce a very small percentage of the thorougbreds bred in South America.

And way back when, the 1975 Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Empery (Vaguely Noble) was a daughter of the Peruvian mare Pamplona (Postin) who had previously produced the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Pampered Miss. Peru’s also produced many a great jockey, with Edgar Prado probably best known.

Wine of the week: Value - Los Arboles 2017 Malbec (Argentina) and Luigi Bosca 2013 Sauvignon Blanc.

That is, plan your trip to Machu Picchu very carefully, and allow at least an extra three days in Cusco - just in case you back a loser as I

did. After travelling about 15,000 kilometres from Melbourne to Ollantaytambo (from where the trains depart for MP), my adventure came to an abrupt halt with the trains cancelled after the tracks were sabotaged by protesters.

Now, I could have considered a five hour drive followed by a three hour trek but I fancied it just wasn’t worth the punt. The guide said ‘no’ and I’m a firm believer, when travelling, that you should always ‘cop the tip’.

So, in case, you’re not clear on this I was two hours by train from Machu Picchu but didn’t get to see it. I did get out the gates, having been driven to the outskirts of Ollantaytambo and then walking for 30 minutes after the road had been blockaded.

I hadn’t been altogether denied a fair start so I have to applaud the tour company Llama Path for refunding the entire cost of the planned journey.

There’s been a touch of bedlam all week in Cusco, the gateway to Machu Pichu. Thousands of protesters brought the city to a standstill Wednesday morning (local time) and disrupted the travel plans of countless international visitors bound for the world heritage site.

While the demonstration ended, without violence or police intervention, early in the afternoon the protests did continue on Thursday.

It might be all back to normal on the weekend but prospective visitors should probably seek advice on immediate and short term travel plans not, in terms of safety, right now but given some possibility of ongoing disruptions to transport by road, rail and air.

Tourists, including me and many other Australians, were stranded in Ollantaytambo on Tuesday when the regular two hour train services to Machu Picchu were cancelled late

morning after the tracks were reportedly sabotaged. Trains did ferry passengers back to Ollantaytambo on Wednesday night, after repairs, but all in-bound services were stopped for ‘public safety reasons’ according to a Railway spokesman.

The service did not run at all on Wednesday or Thursday. This really doesn’t seem to have had much press!

Travellers, on Tuesday, had to seek accommodation in Ollantaytambo where hotels were inundated or seek already over-stretched transport back to Cusco, about two hours by road.

The demonstration, designed to draw international attention, has been largely peaceful but tyres were set alight in the main street of Cusco and tar was daubed on the entrance to the USA Consular Agency.

The unrest apparently dates back to, at least, 2015. Tensions flared early this week with what was billed as a teacher’s strike but Wednesday’s march included the old and the young and workers from all sectors with those from the construction industry prominent.

Low wages, the drain of funds from the tourism and natural resource rich region of Cusco to the capital Lima and the government’s failure to commit to establishing an International airport in Cusco are apparently some of the reasons behind the public discontent.

An estimated 1,000,000 people per annum visit the Incan estate Machu Picchu which was rediscovered in 1911.

OverviewFormer Japanese horse of the year Maurice (Screen Hero) will shuttle

to Arrowfield Stud in New South Wales this year. The former Noriyuki Hori-trained multiple Group One-winning six-

year-old won 11 and placed in three of his 18 career starts, amassing career earnings of ¥1,063,480,620.

The son of Screen Hero (Grass Wonder) made a winning introduction over 1400 metres at Kyoto in October 2013 as a two-year-old, and went on to finish a close sixth in a bunched finish to the Keio Hai Nisai Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at his next start.

He made the track just four times during his three-year-old career, with his best performance coming when he took fourth in the Sho Spring Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m), but he showed vastly improved form on his return as a four-year-old, winning over 1600 metres at Nakayama first up in January 2015.

Maurice built on that impressive reappearance to go unbeaten for the remainder of 2015, completing a Group/Grade One hat-trick in the Yasuda Kinen (Gr 1, 1600m), Kyoto Mile Championship (Gr 1, 1600m) and Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

He returned in May 2016 to win the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin and, though defeated at his next two starts, he performed creditably when second in both the Yasuda Kinen and Sapporo Kinen (Gr 2, 2000m).

On his return from a short break, he won the prestigious Tenno Sho

(Autumn) (Gr 1, 2000m) at at Tokyo, and he showed a sparkling turn of foot to win the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) by three lengths at Sha Tin last December, after he which he was retired to stud.

One of nine named foals out of the unplaced Carnegie (Sadler’s Wells) mare Mejiro Frances, herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed Mejiro Atlas (Mejiro McQueen), Maurice is a half-brother to five winners.

His second dam is the stakes winner Mejiro Monterey (Mogami), who produced four winners from seven foals to race, while his fourth dam is the stakes winner Mejiro Bosatsu (Montaval).

Further back, this is also the family of Grade Two winner Shonan Lagoon (Symboli Kris S), Grade Three winner Sound Rihanna (Came Home) and stakes winners Mejiro Dober (Mejiro Ryan), Mejiro Corsair (Mejiro Ryan) and Mejiro Mantle (Hector Protector).

Maurice will stand for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST) this year.

Analysis: Team Hawkes-trained filly Bella Martini followed her first up second in a 2YO Plate (1000m) at Sandown Hillside on 28 June at her second race start with an impressive win here. She began well and soon crossed to the front. She then travelled well, slowing the tempo, sprinted clear at the 300m and then went on to score a very easy five lengths win.

Analysis: Matt Laurie-trained two-year-old gelding Valiant Green did well in winning here on debut. He began well, settled in sixth place, tracking a good pace, before getting along the inner at the home turn. He was held up at the 300m before easing deeper at the 200m and he then ran on nicely for a good win.

Analysis: After placings in three of his first five starts, Greg Eurell-trained three-year-old gelding Pablo’s Express broke through with an impressive win here. Having his second run this preparation, he showed good early pace from his wide barrier (11), settled nicely outside the leader (Matriarchal) before dashing to the front on turning for home. Analysis: Bjorn Baker-trained two-year-old filly Terra Reign staged a promising effort in winning here on debut. She began well from barrier nine and eased to settle in sixth place, one off the rails, behind a good tempo. She improved nicely rounding the home turn going to third on straightening and then finished too well along the rails to score well.
