Standard Level two day hands-on course includes: • Course • Examination - ONLINE

As we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the invention of the ruby laser by the late Professor Maiman, the use of lasers has been spreading quite readily within the disciplines of medicine and dentistry. Traditional surgical techniques have been replaced by the use of lasers as the new gold standards, and lasers

are set to define more possibilities. With proper training, laser technology enables efficient, dependable and predictable treatment outcome, but unfortunately enormous treatment opportunities can go unused or underused simply because we can be misled by those who may have limited perspective regarding treatment potentials of laser-tissue interactions. The capacity to provide an independent and unbiased assessment of knowledge and surgical skills illustrates how ALD can provide long-term professional development goals and priorities for its members. The Standard & Advanced Proficiency Certification structure is a powerful strategy for involving experienced mentors in high quality professional development that leads to improvements in our understanding and clinical applications of lasers: What we know, how we know it, and what we need to know.

I am thankful for the 10th Anniversary of my mentors’ influence on the quality of my patient care and proud of my subsequent ALD certifications. I am sure you will be too.

Dr. Verica Aleksic is in the PhD program at Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Department of Hard Tissue Engineering, Section of Periodontology. She will present “Low-level Er:YAG Irradiation Enhances Osteoblast Proliferation Through Activation of MAPK/ERK” on Thursday, April 15, during Understanding Photobiomodulation: Low Level Laser Treatment & Photo Therapy, 10:45 am – 12:15 pm - Morning Breakout Session. Dr. Aleksic is mentored by Akira Aoki, DDS, PhD, Associate Professor, Tokyo Medical and Dental University.

IntroductionandAimofthisStudy:Based on the various advantageous effects, the Er:YAG laser has been

recently considered as one of the most promising laser systems for periodontal and peri-implant therapy.

It has been reported in an animal study that increased amount of new bone formation was significantly enhanced following Er:YAG laser irradiation (Mizutani et al. LSM 2006, Takasaki et al. LIMS 2007). One of the potential explanations for significant new bone formation might be related to the effect of low-level Er:YAG laser irradiation (low-level laser therapy, photo-bio-modulation).

In osteogenesis, several in vitro studies using different laser devices have previously demonstrated the positive effects of low-level irradiation in promoting new bone formation by inducing proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts. Since no studies have reported the effect of low-level Er:YAG irradiation on osteoblasts, the aim of this study is to investigate the potential photo-bio-modulatory effect of the Er:YAG laser on osteoblasts.

Dr. Aleksic may be reached by email [email protected].

Dr. Adar Ben-Amy, student scholar from Israel completed the post-graduate pediatric residency program at the University of Alabama, Birmingham in 2009. He will present “Efficacy of laser treatment for prevention of oral mucositis in pediatric cancer patients” ” on Thursday, April 15, during Understanding Photobiomodulation: Low Level Laser Treatment & Photo Therapy, 10:45 am – 12:15 pm - Morning Breakout Session. Dr. Ben-Amy is mentored by Noel K. Childers, DDS, MS, PhD, Professor and Chair, University of Alabama Birmingham School

of Dentistry, Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Ben-Amy is our first recipient of this special recognition in pediatric dentistry.

IntroductionandAimofthisStudy:Oral mucositis is a morbid and costly side effect of cancer treatment

in pediatric patients. No preventive or therapeutic methods have been validated for this condition. Several studies testing the efficacy of laser for the reduction of incidence, duration and/or severity of cancer therapy induced oral mucositis have been performed. Results of these studies have been encouraging but most authors agree that this subject requires more clinical study. Objectives of our study: 1. To test the hypothesis that laser application during cytotoxic therapy will reduce incidence, severity and duration of oropharyngeal mucositis in pediatric cancer patients. 2. To study the effects of laser exposure on the need for parenteral nutrition analgesics, and duration of hospital stay of children treated for malignancy.

Significance: Prevention of oral mucositis and/or reduction in its signs and symptoms can significantly improve the quality of life of the patients, reduce the hospitalization costs and most importantly, increase the survival rate of these patients.

Dr. Cynthia Morford, is a second year resident in the Postgraduate Prosthodontic Program at University of California, San Francisco UCSF. She will present “Er:YAG laser debonding of porcelain veneers” Saturday April 17, 2010 during Contemporary Topics in the Use of Erbium Lasers Procedures 10:30 am – 12:15 pm - Morning Breakout Session. Dr. Morford is mentored by Peter Rechmann, Prof. Dr. med. dent., Professor - Division of Prosthodontics, Director Clinical Sciences Research Group, Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences, University of California San Francisco School of Dentistry.

IntroductionandAimofthisStudy:Removal of porcelain veneers using Er:YAG lasers have been described

in case reports. The aim of the study was to systematically investigate the use of an Er:YAG laser for veneer removal without destroying the veneer as well as without aggressive destruction or removal of underlying tooth substance.

Meet your ALD Candidates for Board Service 2010ByDr.StevenBurman,NominationsChairman

Characteristics and Attributes of an Ideal ALD Board Member• Proven Performance Leadership requires knowledge, talent, skill, vitality and the ability

to make a difference. In the association environment, that translates into a solid track record of contributing to the success of programs, events or projects.

• Commitment Serving as an association leader is both an honor and a reward, but

it requires a demonstrated commitment to the organization and its mission and goals.

• Time to Serve Participating fully in association activities requires extra time to

prepare for travel and attend meetings.

• Understanding of Team Work Many people contribute their efforts toward the realization of an

association’s goals and objectives – no one does it alone. Well developed interpersonal and communication skills are essential to effective teamwork.

• Sound Judgment and Integrity In many instances, popularity brings potential leaders into the

limelight of an association. But popularity must be tempered with good judgment and integrity. Decisions may need to be made that are not popular with the members.

• Communication and “Teaching” Skills By virtue of their position, current leaders serve as mentors and

teachers to future leaders. Enthusiasm – a zest for serving the association is an important ingredient that leaders must be able to pass along to their successors.

• Ability to Subordinate Special Interests Leaders often emerge because of their special expertise or effective

representation of a specific constituency. Leadership, however, may require subordinating those interests for the greater good of the association.

• Be Strategic Thinkers Intuitive and interpretive skills enable leaders to understand the

people around them, internalize the data they receive, recognize the relationships that exist between the systems within their world and integrate all these elements into a coherent whole.
