Cirrus des Aigles is giving everyindication that he is at least as goodas ever. The six-year-old hasconfirmed that there was no fluke tohis defeat of So You Think in the2011 Qipco Champion Stakes byrecording further Gr1 victories in theDubai Sheema Classic and the PrixGanay, and the gelding’s enormousearnings are now equivalent to morethan £3.7 million.No-one could ever have predicted

that such a phenomenal futureawaited a son of Even Top. Althoughthe son of Topanoora failed by only ashort head to win the 1996 2,000Guineas, he ultimately failed to win aGroup race. He initially stood in Irelandbefore relocating to France but histotal of 163 foals includes only oneblack-type winner – Cirrus des Aigles. As a member of Topanoora’s first

crop, Even Top helped focus attentionof this smart middle-distanceperformer. Topanoora had initiallystruggled for support in Ireland andwas exported to India, before beingrepatriated by Coolmore, where hewas quickly transferred to its NationalHunt division.Cirrus des Aigles comes from a

famous female line, tracing back toLady Peregrine, dam of the 2,000Guineas winner Flamingo and seconddam of the Champion Stakes winnerHoneyway. His fifth dam, Run Honey, was a talented half-sister toHoneyway and her string of smartoffspring included Cirrus des Aigles’sfourth dam Runnello, a triple winner attwo, when rated 116 by Timeform. This family has also produced the

very successful stallions Lord Gayleand Persian Bold, plus the 2008 Irish

Despite not always enjoying thestrongest numerical support, thechampion middle-distance performerSakhee has been very ablyrepresented on the Flat by the likes ofPresvis, Sakhee’s Secret and TinHorse. However, his name isn’t soquickly associated with success overjumps. Prior to the 2011-12 seasonhis highest-rated jumpers had beenthe useful staying hurdler Sivota andthe fairly useful hurdler/chaserSquadron, the latter an earner ofnearly £80,000 for trainer Alan King.No doubt Squadron’s exploits werereflected in King’s willingness to pay100,000gns for Grumeti, another sonof Sakhee, at the 2011 Autumn Sales.Like Squadron, Grumeti had won a

If it takes a smart performer to win asingle Gr1 race, one would think itwould take a top-notch performer towin three. However, Follow The Planhas achieved that feat without beingrecognized as a top performer, with histhree Gr1 wins being gained atstarting prices of 12-1, 20-1 and 50-1. He has also won a Gr2 event at 25-1 and has never been shorter than10-1 in any of his seven wins underrules.Follow The Plan’s 50-1 success

came in the Betfred Bowl Chase, which represented his second Gr1 winat a distance of three miles and afurlong. Part of his stamina comesfrom his sire Accordion. Although theson of Sadler’s Wells never raced, hewas a brother to Sonus, a St Legerrunner-up who went on to win theGoodwood Cup and to be placed inthe Prix du Cadran and Ascot GoldCup.Accordion’s last foals, which were

After Menorah’s determined victory inthe 2010 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, there were widespread expectationsthat he would one day develop into aformidable novice chaser. However, the transition hasn’t been without itssetbacks. He lost his rider whenleading at the second-last on hischasing debut and his jumping left alot to be desired when he fell in hisfourth steeplechase. He also madetwo significant errors when a remotethird in the Arkle Challenge Trophy. Fortunately, he jumped much better

He has now won three of hissix starts over hurdles and there canbe little doubt that he will repay thepatience shown him when he makesthe transition to fences.Lovcen’s dam Lady Hawk had two

The betting wascorrect, with Grumeti winning by alength over the Triumph winner.Although bred for the Flat, Grumeti

is out of Tetravella, a mare who hadalready shown she could produce asuccessful jumper. Ellerslie Tom, herson by Octagonal, has earned morethan £90,000. Tetravella, who gainedtwo of her three wins in France over15 furlongs, comes from a familywhich excelled for owner/breederGerry Oldham. Grumeti’s second dam,the Busted mare Vanya, was a veryuseful sister to the smart Muroto, aswell as being a three-parts sister tothe high-class brothers Romildo (PrixGanay) and Pevero.

OSCAR WHISKY b g 2005

For the second successive year OscarWhisky gamely held the challenge ofThousand Stars to record a neckvictory in the Gr1 Aintree Hurdle. Inbetween these two victories OscarWhisky had also been successful inthree other races, including a ‘jumpers’bumper’ over Kempton’s all-weathertrack. He now has the proud record ofhaving won 11 of his 15 starts and hehas repaid the €80,000 spent on himat Goffs in June 2008 roughly fourtimes over. Three of his four defeatshave come on his visits to theCheltenham Festival, where his besteffort was to finish third to HurricaneFly in the 2011 Champion Hurdle.Oscar Whisky’s contribution to the

prize-money earned by Oscar’sprogeny during the 2011-12 seasonstood at a substantial £130,000.Although Rock On Ruby and Big Zebmade even bigger contributions, Oscarjust failed in his bid to achieve his firstsires’ championship, having to givebest to another exceptional of Sadler’sWells’s sons, the Ballylinch Stud-based King’s Theatre. Oscar had alsofinished second the previous year, beaten by Presenting.Oscar Whisky races mainly at

Alderbrook’s death at the age of 18 inNovember 2007 has been made tolook all the more regrettable duringthe 2011-12 season. His four-year-old son Grey Monk showed so muchpotential in winning his debut point-to-point that he sold for €210,000 atGoffs’ Punchestown Invitation Sale inApril 2012. Grey Monk’s buyers musthave been encouraged that two othersons of Alderbrook had recentlyenjoyed Gr1 success, with For NonStop winning the Scilly Isles Novices’Chase and Alderwood the EveningHerald Champion Novice Hurdle.Previously Alderbrook had beenrepresented by such as Ollie Magern,Perouse, Sh Boom, Glenfinn Captainand Baron Windrush.Alderbrook himself had the

distinction of being very talented bothon the Flat and over hurdles. Afterwinning the Gr2 Prix Dollar and Gr3Select Stakes, he defeated LargeAction and Danoli to take the 1995Champion Hurdle. His son Alderwoodnever raced on the Flat and took awhile to find his feet in bumpers andover hurdles, suffering sevenconsecutive defeats. Fortunately hehas thrived on a busy schedule, winning six times in less than a year.He was recording his thirdconsecutive Graded win when hedefeated the odds-on Trifolium atPunchestown.Alderwood’s dam Clamit Falls is an

unraced daughter of Homo Sapien, who shared the same sire, Lord Gayle,

as Strong Gale, Callernish, ExecutivePerk and Lord Americo. AlthoughHomo Sapien possessed plenty oftalent, he had been rather lightly racedduring his four years with Sir HenryCecil and had raced only at up to amile, notably winning the six-furlongAbernant Stakes at four.Homo Sapien stood both north and

south of the border in Ireland beforemoving to England. His most notablelegacy was Promalee, winner of theGr1 Drinmore Novice Chase.

SIR DES CHAMPS b/br g 2006

In becoming one of a handful ofFrench-based (or formerly French-based) stallions to finish among thetop 20 during the 2011-12 season,Robin Des Champs was in elitecompany. The highest-ranked wasDom Alco, sire of Neptune Collonges,Silviniaco Conti, Grands Crus and AlFerof, and next came the evergreenCadoudal, thanks to Big Buck’s, LongRun and Le Beau Bai.From a limited number of runners,

Robin Des Champs enjoyed Gradedsuccess with Sir Des Champs, Sousles Cieux, Quevega and Ut De Sivola. The exciting aspect of Robin DesChamps’s story is that he is still only15. He raced as a three-year-old,when he won the first four of his fivestarts over hurdles by a total of nearly20 lengths. He didn’t arrive at theCashmans’ Glenview Stud until August2008, so his eldest Irish jumpers won’treach the racecourse until late 2013.He covered 144 mares in his first year,82 in his second and 82 in his third, sothere is plenty to look forward to. Evenso, I am guessing that his book in2012, when his fee is €5,000, will besubstantially higher than 82.His previous winners in Britain and

Ireland include Quinz (Gr3 RacingPost Chase), Escort’men (a Gr2hurdles winner) and Original (Gr2Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase). Over inFrance he has been represented byOeil du Maitre (French ChampionHurdle in 2008). Despite thisimpressive team, it is possible that Sir

Des Champs already ranks as hisfinest effort, as his victory in theGrowise Champion Novice Chaseextended his unbeaten run overhurdles and fences to eight.Sir Des Champs has already won

beyond three miles on very testingground, so stamina clearly isn’t anissue for him. He no doubt owes someof his stamina to his broodmare sireVideo Rock, who also sired the dam ofthe Grade1-winning stayer Saint Are. A middle-distance horse in France,

Video Rock was France’s leading sireof chasers in 2007 and also made hismark with his British jumpers, whichincluded the stayers NenupharCollonges (Albert Bartlett Novices'Hurdle), Edmond (Welsh National) andHussard Collonges (Royal &SunAlliance Chase). He also sired theChampion Hurdle runner-up Osana, the top French chaser El Paso III andthe French Champion Hurdle winnerLycaon de Vauzelle.

Three-year-olds beat their elders in boththe April 2 Group 1s but Rabid In TheRyewas much more of a surprise.Galan de Cine looked sure to extendhis winning sequence to four whengoing clear early in the final furlong butEdwin Talaverano produced a strongfinish from Rabid In The Rye to shorthead him. The favourite Expressive Halowas one and a half lengths back in third.Rabid In The Rye had been twiceGroup-1 placed over a mile at SanIsidro. However, he had finished sixth, eight lengths behind Galan de Cineover course and distance in the ClasicoOtono on March 10, so no wonder hestarted at almost 19-1. Malibu Queen had beaten four of

her five rivals in the Clasico Bullrich, another contest over course anddistance on March 10. But that hadbeen a bit of an upset and she againstarted at longer odds than three ofthem. There was no questioning hershort-neck victory over stable

companion Kali Baby, however, andthey finished four lengths clear.

None of the principals in the juvenileGroup 1s had won more than a maiden. They may prove champions but at thisstage they are no more than novices.Winning Prize had the best draw andmade all for an easy three and a half-length success over Safety Belt.

He was a July 2 foal, while Tarsiliawas not born until October 24. Shewas racing for the third time but lookedvery green when moving alongside theonce-raced Smashing Glory in the finalfurlong. She ducked right twice beforeputting her head down in the finalstrides to triumph by a short neck. Hertime was slightly the faster and it will beinteresting to see how she progresses.

Tarsilia did not take part in the MayDay fiesta at Palermo but SmashingGlory paid her a handsomecompliment when beating Sand Puceand Bamba Jane by one and a halflengths and a neck. The three are

trained by different members of theEtchechoury family. They also have astrong Ballydoyle connection. AlthoughHonour And Glory raced in the USA,winning the 1996 MetropolitanHandicap at Belmont, he carried thecolours of Michael Tabor. The secondand third are by Footstepsinthesandand Johannesburg. Pataques, who was contesting a

Group race for the first time, completeda four-timer with a one and a half-lengthdefeat of Zoulou. Big Cazanova, whowas the same distance back in third, was part of a strong Peruvian party. Expressive Halo produced the

form which had won him the 2010 GPNacional (Derby) and last December'sGP Carlos Pellegrini to add the day'srichest prize. He was drawn on theoutside of 14 runners so GustavoCalvente was able to launch hischallenge down the centre of the trackrather than close to the rails, as he hadin the GP de Honor. There was no more

than one and a quarter lengths betweenthe first seven, with Rapid In The Ryefifth and Galan de Cine sixth.

Malibu Queen was again the staramong the fillies, winning the latestGroup 1 in our table by two lengthsfrom the Peruvian-trained Almudena.Backers still preferred Kali Baby, sending her off at 6-4, with MalibuQueen 28-10.

Sardinero, winner of his only tworaces in impressive style, was an odds-on favourite for the GP de las Americasbut burst himself running the first sixfurlongs in 1m 08.66s. He faded tofinish a poor fourth while Panegirico, running for the first time sinceDecember 12, came from way back toscore by six lengths under Calvente. Charles King, a former

handicapper who has been placed inseveral Group 1 sprints, gained adeserved reward when beating 14rivals in the GP Ciudad de BuenosAires.

The Australian industry is basking in theglory of numerous equine stars, most ofwhom are fillies. None are bigger thanBlack Caviar, who hardly had to breaksweat in registering a 20th straight winagainst inferior members of her own sexin the Robert Sangster Stakes.

The April achievements of anothermare, More Joyous, deserve greaterplaudits. Having become the first horseto win two renewals of the Queen OfThe Turf Stakes, she then carried topweight (once the female allowance istaken into account) to a hard-foughtvictory in the nation’s top mile race, theDoncaster Mile. A year earlier she hadbeen hot favourite for the Doncaster butgot bogged down in heavy ground andfailed to make the first ten. This time theweather gods dried the course in thenick of time, allowing her to beat theChipping Norton Stakes winner ShootOut by three-quarters of a length. Tocap it all she then confounded thosewho doubted her stamina at tenfurlongs in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.Given a brilliant front-running ride byNash Rawiller, she was a comfortabletwo and a half lengths clear of theformer Luca Cumani charge Manighar,

himself bidding for a scarcely believableGroup 1 four-timer, at the line.

The last of Manighar’s trio of toplevel triumphs had come three weeksearlier in the BMW Stakes. Runner-upthat day was the 2010 Melbourne Cupwinner Americain, who was hung outwide the whole way and whose jockey,Gerald Mosse, was slated by chiefsteward Ray Murrihy!

Another to notch a massive autumnhat-trick was November’s Crown Oaksheroine Mosheen, who followed upher Australian and Randwick Guineaswins with victory in the Vinery StudStakes. She is now in line for anOctober clash in the Cox Plate withMore Joyous, whose scallywag owner,John Singleton, has rebuffed variousinvitations to try her luck in Europe.

Another female to wow the Carnivalcrowds was Atlantic Jewel, whospent over five months on the sidelineswith a back injury after she hadtrounced Mosheen in the ThousandGuineas last October. She easedherself back into action in the SapphireStakes and maintained her unbeatenrecord when disposing of a determinedmale rival in Rain Affair in the All Aged

Stakes. Owned by Coolmore, she isanother in the mix for what could be ablockbuster Cox Plate.

On to the juveniles, and at last a colt, the brilliant and tough Pierro. Racingthree times in four weeks, he first sawoff Snitzerland and favourite Samareadyto claim the big one, the GoldenSlipper. Then he was almost twolengths too strong for Black Caviar’s $1million half-brother, All Too Hard, beforehe became the sixth two-year-old TripleCrown winner (and only the second toremain unbeaten) with an easyChampagne Stakes victory. Both MoreJoyous and Pierro are trained by thelarger-than-life Gai Waterhouse, whoenjoyed an outstanding Sydney AutumnCarnival, winning seven of its 19 Group1s, equalling her father’s record tally ofseven Doncaster successes in theprocess, and enjoying stakes racetrebles on five consecutive Saturdays. Streama, who got to within half a

length of an eased-down Mosheen inthe Vinery Stud Stakes, got up on theline to justify odd-on favouritism in theAustralian Oaks, while Invest, who isby Dehere out of a Group 1 winner, began to live up to her breeding when

lifting the South Australian equivalent, the Australasian Oaks.

Winless in three previous starts,Ethiopia edged out the Tulloch Stakesscorer Polish Knight in the AustralianDerby with the Rosehill Guineas victor,Laser Hawk, a rare reverse forWaterhouse in third. Master Of Design, a $2m yearling

purchase since laid low with chronicfoot and joint problems, broke hisGroup 1 duck at the age of six whencatching Rain Affair on the line in the T JSmith Stakes.

Two other crocks to land emotionalwins were Niwot and Metal Bender.Niwot, who was absent for 18 monthshaving shattered the bones in the backof his knee in 2009, beat another old-stager, 2007 Melbourne Cup winnerEfficient, in the Sydney Cup. And MetalBender, who has suffered from bothbleeding and a bowed tendon, wasnursed back to fitness by Chris Wallerto lift the George Ryder Stakes.

Finally, Australia’s already impressiveraid on Royal Ascot’s sprints gainedanother recruit when Temple OfBoomwon the Galaxy under kiwi ridingsensation James McDonald.

Old Tune and Plenty Of Kicksbecame the latest Triple Crown winnerson the same afternoon. Both startedodds-on and beat the same opponentsas in the previous leg. The extra

distance was the principal obstaclethey faced but both dealt with it inconfident style. Old Tune scored by acomfortable three and a quarter lengthsfrom Unique Zuca, who had run her to

half a length in the previous leg. She isthe first winner of the Rio fillies TripleCrown since Be Fair in 2000.

Plenty Of Kicks won by the samemargin. Jorge Ricardo, who was riding

his first Triple Crown winner, kept himup to his work to the end. The onesignificant difference between the tworaces was that Plenty Of Kicks ran a3.02 seconds faster time.

Rulership, sixth to Rewilding in lastyear’s Dubai Sheema Classic and whohas since won twice at Grade 2 level inhis native Japan, had Aidan O’Brien’s

Treasure Beach well behind in ninth ashe landed the Audemars Piguet QEIICup by almost four lengths. This wasanother feather in the cap of his trainer

Katsuhiko Sumii, who snaffled the 2011Dubai World Cup with Victoire Pisa and2006 Melbourne Cup with Delta Blues. The victorious pilot was 23-year-old

Italian Umberto Rispoli, ending his stintin Hong Kong in style (he will spend theEuropean summer in France), havinginitially gone 75 rides without a victory.

An outrageous result to the biggestolder horse contest of the spring, theTenno Sho, as 159-1 shot Beat Black

was allowed to establish a huge leadwith another no-hoper and never cameback, scoring by four lengths. Sent off

at 3-10 despite a massive field, lastyear’s Triple Crown winner Orfevretrailed home in 11th and plans to bring

him over for the Arc are on hold. Gold Ship shot to the top of the

three-year-old colts rankings with a two >>

and a half-length triumph over theslightly unlucky World Ace in the 2,000

Guineas. There was a much closer finish to the

1,000 Guineas as Gentildonna ledhome a one-two for stallion Deep

Impact with the favourite, Joie de Vivre, who is also by Deep Impact, only sixth.

Veyron repeated last year’s EasterHandicap win and in the processnotched his third Group 1 inside twomonths – not to mention a close

second in the New Zealand Stakesduring that period. Overcoming trafficproblems in the home straight, he beatPostman’s Daughter by half a length to

register a sweet win for Zimbabwean-born jockey Rogan Norvall, who wascoming back from a broken ankle.

Rosie Myers was the winning pilot in

the Breeders Stakes, in which hermount, the Thorndon Mile heroine SayNo More, prevailed by a nose after aprolonged duel with Fleur de Lune.

Highlight of the month was a thrillingSA Derby. There was a 20-minute waitafter Pomodoro and Royal Bencherflashed past the post together for theoutcome to be determined, first for thejudge to announce a dead-heat, thenfor the stewards to allow the result tostand following a coming together nearthe winning post. Pomodoro was

possibly more of the sinner than thesinned against but, given his narrownear-miss in the SA Classic, hisdemotion would have been cruel.

A classy renewal of theComputaform Sprint may haveheralded a changing of the guardamong the nation’s top speedsters. Therecently gelded Shea Sheamade all

to beat Magico by two and quarterlengths with What A Winter only thirdand the two great stars of recent years,J J The Jet Plane and Val de Ra, fillingthe last two places.

Mike de Kock, who had thedisappointing favourite in the Derby anddid not field a runner in the Sprint, dominated the rest of the month. His

Rock Of Gibraltar mare, Europa Point, took advantage of two below parperformances from Dancewiththedevilto post convincing victories in theEmpress Club Stakes and President’sChampions Challenge. And hisHamdan Al Maktoum juvenile colt, SoftFalling Rain, positively bolted up inthe SA Nursery.

The final Kentucky Derby prep racessaw Bodemeister burst out of thepack to depose the Breeders’ Cup[BC] Juvenile one-two, Hansen andUnion Rags, as ante-post favourite. TheBob Baffert-trained colt did so with awire-to-wire nine and a half-lengththrashing of his stablemate SecretCircle in the Arkansas Derby.Bodemeister went on to finish runner-up in the Derby.

Hansen’s reputation was diminishedby his length and a quarter defeat at the

hands of synthetic track specialistDullahan in the Blue Grass Stakes.Hansen was to finish ninth in the bigone.

The Santa Anita Derby was tight, with subsequent Kentucky Derbywinner I’ll Have Another beating theultra-consistent Creating Cause, whowas third in the BC Juvenile and hadBodemeister among his victims in theSan Felipe Stakes, by a nose.

Among the fillies, Karlovy Varyheaded for the Kentucky Oaks after

pulling off a 15-1 surprise in theAshland Stakes in which Stephanie’sKitten, having her first start since herBC Juvenile Fillies Turf triumph and enroute to the Coronation Stakes at RoyalAscot, was third. Karlovy Vary was tofinish 12th in the Oaks.

Last year’s Oaks winner, PlumPretty, made light of a five-monthabsence to take the Apple BlossomHandicap, whilst two other four-year-oldfillies opened their Grade 1 accounts. Daisy Devine took her turf record to

a perfect four-from-four in the JennyWiley Stakes and Groupie Dollbenefited from the application ofblinkers in the Vinery Madison Stakes.

A humdinger of a finish to the CarterHandicap saw the BC Dirt Mile winnerCaleb’s Posse fail by inches to catchthe BC Sprint third Jackson Bend.

On the grass, Data Link broke hisstakes race duck in grand style, catching the BC Mile runner-upTurallure close home in the Maker’s MileStakes.

Leading global sires by stakes winnersAs usual, stallions in Australia are incharge at the moment, and whileRedoute’s Choice is a regular in thiscolumn the leader, Fastnet Rock, isnot. He too is by Danehill but at only 11he has made a cracking start to hiscareer, being responsible for nineGroup 1 scorers since retiring in 2005.

Fastnet Rock was a sprinter, landingGroup 1s over five and six furlongs, andbeing named champion, a laurel thattends to mean rather more in Australianowadays than it does in Europe.

Crucially, his progeny seem to betaking after him, with the vast majority

excelling at distances up to a mile. TheCoolmore stallion has shuttled toIreland and his first crop in the northernhemisphere are yearlings this year. It willbe intriguing to see how they sell andthen run in Europe.

With 21 Black Type Horses (BTH)and 20 Group Horses (GH), DeepImpact leads the field and his eightGraded winners put him one behindFastnet Rock. King Kamehameha infifth adds to the Japanese influence, while Oasis Dream has donesplendidly to take fourth at this stagebefore the European season takes off.

Dream in it to win itIt’s early in the season and the table hasan early-season look to it, with such asGalileo, Dubawi and Montjeu not yetmaking the top dozen (Camelot’striumph came after the closing date forthe table).

But all credit to Oasis Dream, whois always prominent and will surelymake his presence increasingly felt, helped by having a lot of runners. Histally of 121 places him third.
