The Chamber’s 2013 Quality of Life Magazine, Our Cherokee, was un-veiled during the organization’s 42nd Annual Meeting. Our Cherokee is utilized for marketing the community to potential new businesses and residents; however the information is also valuable for existing compa-nies and people who already call Cherokee County home! A copy of Our Cherokee has been mailed to all Chamber members.
It’s no secret that Our Cherokee is what the cover says as Cherokee Coun-ty is growing, progressive, prosperous, friendly, metro, dynamic, beauti-ful and the list goes on and on. Will you help us spread the word about what Our Cherokee has to offer? Additional copies are available by con-tacting the Chamber at 770-345-0400 or [email protected].
Now sit back, relax and read about Our Cherokee. You might just learn something new!

Two corporate donors stepped forward to complete the Elm Street Event Green for Woodstock’s Elm Street Cultural Arts Village, just in time for a happy new year for the grow-ing arts center in the downtown area.
Austin Outdoor, headquartered in central Florida, and Highland Waterworks, Inc, of Atlanta, were the two corpo-rate patrons who donated nearly $20,000 worth of materials and labor to complete the event green portion of the four acre site.
Brian Wester, Regional Vice President for Austin Outdoor, remarked, “Elm Street fit in perfectly with the type of proj-ects we like to assist in our corporate outreach program.” Jim Hester, President of Highland Waterworks, added that Highland was “happy to be involved in this community ef-fort.”
Background on the Project:According to Elm Street Board of Directors President Shawn McLeod, Walton Communities donated significant amounts of material and labor for overall site grading and infrastructure earlier in 2012. Melissa Casteel, RLA, prin-cipal landscape architect of Mondo Land Planning + De-sign, is donating services for the site on an ongoing basis.
Ann Litrel, Director of Fundraising for the Board of Di-rectors for Elm Street, said that the event green will have multiple uses for the community, serving to host outdoor festivals and markets, offering a recreational space along the Greenprints Trail system, and providing a venue for outdoor performances and classes for the Elm Street The-ater and local businesses.

“Local emergency medical services (EMS) are often the first line of defense in diagnosing and treating a heart attack; a strong partnership with local EMS is critical to achieving better patient outcomes,” said Bil-ly Hayes, CEO, Northside Hospital-Cherokee. “This sponsorship made perfect sense for us.”
The Physio-Control, Inc. LIFEPAK® 12 Defibrillator/Monitors, which are now on board all of the Cherokee EMS ambulances, are designed to improve care for heart attack patients by reducing the overall time to treatment.

patients arriving to the emergency department, mini-mizing the ‘door to balloon’ time for reperfusion,” said Timothy Prather, Chief, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.
PCI, or Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, previ-ously known as angioplasty, is a nonsurgical procedure that opens the heart’s arteries using a catheter with a small balloon attached to the tip. The procedure is a critical interventional procedure for individuals suf-fering a heart attack due to blockage in the arteries. Northside Hospital-Cherokee is the only facility in Cherokee County to offer the service.
“The purchase of the monitors through this donation will enhance the cardiac-related services provided to the citizens of Cherokee County,” said Prather.
“The EMS of Cherokee County FIRE & Emergency Services is dedicated to increasing survival and reduc-ing disability from out-of-hospital emergencies in the county by providing the highest quality patient care in the pre-hospital setting,” said Danny West, EMS chief, Cherokee County. “All of our programs are designed to enhance these efforts and are developed through strong partnerships with other EMS agencies and hospitals. We sincerely appreciate the support from Northside Hospital-Cherokee.”
Prior to the sponsorship, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services had just nine monitors, which served 1,106 cardiac-related responses in 2012. They now have 14 monitors. According to the agency, due to current economy and budget constraints, it would have taken several years to purchase and implement new monitors, without the sponsorship.
Northside Hospital-Cherokee’s Emergency Depart-ment (ED), in collaboration with the hospital’s state-of-the-art Cath Lab, uses the latest monitoring and imaging equipment to provide stabilization and treat-ment of all conditions including PCI intervention for patients experiencing heart attacks. In 2012, the hos-pital received accreditation as a Chest Pain Center from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. The ED is staffed with board-certified emergency medi-cine physicians and nurses certified in PALS (pediatric advanced life support) and ACLS (adult cardiac life support), who provide the highest level of care. Teen Leadership 2013 Sponsors!
The Chamber is pleased to announce that participants for the Teen Leadership Cherokee Class of 2013 have been selected. Students were asked to submit a formal application and participated in two rounds of personal interviews with local business leaders.
The Teen Leadership Cherokee Class has already at-tended an orientation with their parents and an all-day re-treat, which was held on January 12th. Over the next four months, students will participate in five class sessions, a community service project and present a group project. A graduation ceremony and dinner will be held in the Cham-ber’s Terrace Level from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on April 2nd.
The mission of Teen Leadership Cherokee is to develop the knowledge and leadership skills of young people in Chero-kee County so they may confidently become our leaders of tomorrow. Participation demonstrates that in this transient society, a diverse group of people working together, rather than individually, can be effective in solving the problems faced by the community.

PARTNERS IN EDUCATION
Sponsored by AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care
Boston Elementary School forged a relationship with Cobb EMC in Au-gust 2004. As one of Boston ES’s most dedicated and valued Partners In Education, Cobb EMC looks for a variety of avenues in which to make a difference in school.
Even before school begins, Cobb EMC is at pre-planning with teachers, providing complimentary breakfast and lunch, along with door prizes for the teachers. In addition, each year Cobb EMC offers grant money for Boston ES’s educators. A grant for the school’s science lab was re-cently awarded to Kathy Cash. Pictured above from left to right: Boston Elementary Principal Joey Moss, Cobb EMC Associate Vice President of Education &Community Relations Mark Justice, Kathy Cash, and Assistant Principal Yolanda Torres. Of course, Boston ES’s students are the main focus for Cobb EMC and they generously provide a range of items and activities for them to use and enjoy, including daily agendas,“Say No to Bullying” t-shirts, decks of playing cards, Silly Bandz, and two author visits (Gail Karwoski and Brian Lee). Finally, Cobb EMC has even opened its doors to our most deserving fourth grade students. These students must complete an appli-cation and “apply” for positions at their company. The most compelling applications earn a chance to visit Cobb EMC and learn all about life in corporate America.
Truly, Cobb EMC stands head and shoulders above many Partners In Education in its quest to better the lives of the community surrounding Boston ES. Ms. Moss, commends Cobb EMC, exclaiming, “We are so grateful for Cobb EMC’s continued support of the Boston Bears!”

A gracious monetary donation was given during the meeting to help with needs of Canton ES’s students. One member of the Rotary Club of Canton, John Longino, is a weekly speaker for 4th and 5th grade classes. He speaks on very educational and entertaining topics. On Read for the Record Day, members Peter Gleichman and Barbara Jacoby read to the students. Canton ES is so fortunate to have the sup-port of this partnership. THANK YOU, Rotary Club of Canton!!! When it comes to Partners In Education, Teasley Mid-dle School believes that one of thier partners, Oak Leaf Church, sets the example. Teasley MS is privileged to rec-ognize them for their continued support for of the students, staff and community. One admirable attribute that Oak Leaf has exhibited throughout the PIE relationship is that, without fail, they respond to the diverse needs of the com-munity in a very personal way. This organization is always ready to face any challenge presented them. While they may receive accolades or attention as a result of Teasley MS’s gratitude; it is evident that from their perspective, no “thank you” is required. Their attitude seems to be, that a need was met, and now on to the next. Instead of doing it for the praise and recognition, they do it because of who they are and the mission they have set forth for themselves. Whether it is providing breakfast for a hungry staff, com-fort for grieving students, school supplies, or simple words of encouragement, Oak Leaf is the first to step forward. A more recent example of their generosity was on No-vember 8, 2012. Teasley MS opened the basketball season against county rival, Freedom Middle School, at the 2nd Annual Black and Blue Tournament, also known as The Battle of the Boards. The four games were held at Chero-kee High School, which was significant as both Teasley MS and Freedom MS students feed into Cherokee HS. Oak Leaf Church assisted in creating and purchasing all of the t-shirts for the event. This act of service and kindness is one of many the relationship with this very special Partner In Education over the last few years. Oak Leaf Church is consistently available to meet the many changing needs of Teasley MS students, and for that, Teasley MS is honored to recognize Oak Leaf Church as an exceptional Partner In Education.

Chick-fil-A Canton Riverstone Parkway is one of Canton ES’s veteran partners remains united in making Canton ES the best it can be. This school year, Spirit Nights have been moved on site for the Canton Connect meetings as well as the 2012-2013 Curriculum Night. For each meet-ing, parents and students can pre-order through Canton ES PTA to have their meals on-site before the meetings. It is a great time of fun and fellowship as the faculty and staff join the families for Spirit Nights in the school cafeteria. On Friday, November 9th, Chick-fil-A and the 3rd Grade from Canton ES had a pep rally to kick off the Wipe Out Germs program. This pilot program through Chick-fil-A is a 6-week course that teaches the 3rd grade students through educational activities about the importance of wip-ing out germs. In the kit that each teacher was provided, they received a case of Purell individual hand sanitizers along with a caddy for usage on field trips and on the play-ground. At the end of the program, Chick-fil-A will host a “Graduation Celebration” for the Canton ES 3rd graders. Thank you, Chick-fil-A Canton Riverstone Parkway!!! At Canton ES, we, “Eat more Chiken!!!”

The DOJO American Karate Cen-ter Teaches Bascomb Elementary School Students About Good Choices
Bascomb Elementary School Partner in Education, Adam Parman of Championship Martial Arts (formerly known as the American DoJo), recently provided im-portant classroom lessons for students at Bascomb ES. He has provided multiple topics in different grade-lev-els such as using thought interrupters to help students manage their anger, goal setting for school success, and respect for others. Throughout these lessons, Adam reinforces the behaviors of good students through his zero-reminder and one-reminder rules. One student from each class is chosen at the end of each lesson for demonstrating model student behavior and gets to break a real karate board. All students are given a homework worksheet to reinforce the skills they learned that day and if parents recognize students using these skills, they are invited to attend a free ceremony at Championship Martial Arts to earn their white belt and break a board. Pictured here is Mr. Parman as “PE Coach For theDay” where he spent the entire day teaching PE classes about good choices in health and physical fitness. Since be-coming a Bascomb ES Partner In Education, The DOJO American Karate Center has also provided support to Bascomb ES through a staff appreciation breakfast and participating in PTA initiatives.
Partners Share Their Careers with Johnston Elementary School Students
Kirk Buchholz, State Farm Insurance Kirk Buch-holz Agency, Carolyn Hall,Scentsy Wickfree Can-dles, Toby Bramblet, Cherokee Outdoor YMCA, and Stacie Parkes, Stevi B’s Pizza all shared their careers with Johnston ES students on Career Day!
Darlene Cope of Northside Hospital - Cherokee has been instrumental in helping my students, who have more learning challenges than most students, on their quest to succeed. They all have had difficulty on the state tests and have low self-esteem when it comes to anything with math. Darlene has physically come to the school and helped students in the computer lab. With 30 students an extra hand is always beneficial. She has do-nated various prizes as students strive to reach goals, and we have even talked about arranging hospital tours for my older students to show them possible career paths.
I work with 150 students who all could use a helping hand, with a smile and a willingness to see the ability that most of these students do not see in themselves Dar-lene has stepped forth to assist. For that I am extremely grateful.
