Page 2PRESIDENTS MESSAGEby Barbara Lukasiewicz, WLTBS President The MISSION of

Womens League of TBSis to create a caring community

women that celebrates andperpetuates Conservative/MasoJudaism in their lives, homes an

    synagogue. Through service,

education, tzedakahand observance, we reinforce obonds with Jews locally, nationa

    in Israel and worldwide.

At the start of a new secular year, Womens League knows eventhough the fiscal years completion is only six months away, we are in fullswing planning events for each months activities. The past year was specialin so many ways for WLTBSit brought Womens League members from allover the U.S. and Canada to Las Vegas for our 2012 International WomensLeague Convention. These women were able to meet many of our capablesisters and thanked us often at convention for our part in adding to itssuccess.

WLTBS members constructed all of the beautiful table centerpieceswhich were on display at each delegates breakfast, lunch and dinner table. We also began Chai Tunes, a Special Interest Group, to write lyrics for alively welcome song we sang and rapped to kick off Convention! OurWomens League members were asked to help in many other ways andbecause we gave our best, we have been recognized and thanked again andagain by Womens League International President Rita Wertlieb, ConventionChair Faye Laveson, Convention Program Chair Margie Miller, and HonoraryConvention Chair Blanche Meisel. These women thanked me numeroustimes on how smoothly everything went for them while working with us! Theythink highly of WLTBS women!

Convention offered many informative lectures and sessions at theJ.W. Marriott, we often wanted to be several places at the same time so wewouldnt miss a thing. There are many take-aways from Convention and Iimagine each of us has our own favorites to share. For me, one such momentwas when author/lecturer, Ron Wolfson, spoke of the importance of positiverelationships. He believes every synagogue should be working on them, since good relationships with congregants keep synagogue doors open.Wolfson reminded us when families join they want to make friends. WLTBS

recognizes the importance of supportive environments and relationships. The Mission Statement of WLTBS is to create a caring community ofwomen that celebrates and perpetuates Conservative/Masorti Judaism intheir lives, homes and synagogue. Through service, education, tzedakah, andobservance, we reinforce our bonds with Jews locally, nationally, in Israel, and worldwide.

We are a multigenerational, inclusive group of women who bothwelcome and invite you to join us! New women are joining each month andthere is a reason we are growing so quickly.we genuinely care aboutWomens League and know you will feel right at home as a member ofWLTBS! The next six months will pass quickly and summer will be here in no

time at all, dont let another WLTBS attraction pass you by when you canenjoy the camaraderie of sisters! At our membership brunch last fall, ayoung mom shared with me that every time she attends one of our events, she is reminded just how much she enjoys them and being with us.

Find out for yourself why Womens League is an active, growing, vitalpart of Temple Beth Sholomit is in large part because of our women andthe inclusive environment weve created. Torah Fund and Donor luncheonplans are already underway and there is so much more. Join us and becomea valued member of a very large and prestigious worldwide organizationnamed WOMENS LEAGUE. Womens Leagueits all about therelationships and friendships!

As a first-time delegate, I was honorebe asked to lead a session at Convena discussion about the nuances of bsupporters of Israel. The conversatiothe session and beyond was insightful invigorating. In another session, woman talked about the first time shehagbah, the lifting of the Torah, an honothe Torah service that many people (included) are afraid to do. The few owho had performed this role agreed th

you have carried around a wriggpreschooler, you can handle a Torah. I blessed to have been trained in hagbahmy father, and I'm always happy to teothers who are interested in trying! Bymy favorite part of Convention was inclosing session, when the ballroom fwith singing and dancing in the aisSuch a spirited and energetic group! Imost grateful for the opportunity to geknow some of our own WL members beand I look forward to seeing all of around the shul! - DEVRA WEISS

As this was my first experience withConvention I can make no comparison. From the time I entered the MarriottConvention area until I left there was afeeling of Judaism in the air which we donot see a great deal of in Las Vegas. You allworked so hard on the centerpieces andthey looked amazing! Although I enjoyedall of the lectures my favorite part was lunchon Monday ( definitely not the food) as I gotto meet and speak to other people. As itturned out one of the women was so happyto meet me as she has a son-in-law anddaughter moving here and they do notknow anyone. She took my name andtelephone number and gave me theirs. Sheasked me about the women as well asTBS. Then she asked me about the area ofSummerlin and did I think it was a goodplace to live. It was a wonderfulconversation that continued for an hourafter lunch. Kudos to all of the women whoworked so hard to make this Convention sovery successful. I am so glad I was able toattend.- RACINE MURDOCK

Convention was an amazing 4 days ofcamaraderie, fun, prayer and workshopsof all kinds. We met ConservativeM o v e m e n t ' s l e a d i n g r a b b i sand educators. Thanks to RabbiGoodman, Devra Weiss, and LillianRadomsky for their active participation. Thanks to Barbara Lukasiewicz, MelanieGreenberg, Brenda Katz and Kim Memarfor all their work. Thanks to all whoparticipated from Women's League andBeth Sholom at the opening banquetdinner honoring me as the HonoraryConvention Chair. I was so surprisedwhen it was announced, that by vote ofthe International Board, I am now aLifetime Honorary Member of theWomen's League International Board. And yes, the Marriott was great and thefood was very good. - BLANCHE MEISEL

This was the second WLCJ Convention that I attended. It was so convenient to have it in our bacrecognized many women I had met two years ago in Baltimore and they remembered me. That was a greatFor several meals I was seated at tables with people I didnt know. (The food was quite good, by the waimpressed that two young rabbis from Los Angeles came in and worked with the hotel chefs to come satisfying meals.) It was fun to get to know them a little and find out what they did in their sisterhoods. I washelp one lady find out something that she needed to know. The network works! I particularly enjoyed the sand their topics. It is rare that we get to hear in person these giants of our movement. Two women esimpressed me: Rabbi Gail Labovitz, Ph.D., who has contributed extensively to the field of Jewish feministand who teaches at the Ziegler School, and Rabbi Bonnie Koppell, a Colonel and Chaplin in the U.S. Armpresented engaging and interesting subjects that I knew little about. There is always something to piq

interest at the convention. There is not a lot of down time during convention and you have to be really selective abou

workshops or breakout sessions you attend. You need to make time to browse and buy in the vendor aThere was a nice variety of items, some fun, some useful, some just plain gorgeous. After dinner there was time in the region suites. The days are long and full and so worth the exhaustion afterwards. To see sConservative Jewish women together in one place, all from different places, working on the same mispromote and preserve Conservative Judaism-is inspiring to me. I felt the strength in our numbers and camrenewed. But I also know that we will always need more women to carry on and carry out what needs to be assure a Jewish future for ourselves and our families. - LILLIAN RADOMSKY

Due to events beyond my control, I was only able to attend on Sunday evening. Watching ourbeautiful and gracious Blanche Meisel being honored was an extraordinary experience.

For me though, the real highlight was greeting a variety of convention delegates at Terminal Sunday morning. At the end of my shift, there were three lovely ladies from the Tampa area looking foleast expensive route to the hotel. Since I was leaving, and felt like I hadn't added much value up topoint, I said I would drive them to the hotel. Piling three huge pieces of luggage and assorted carry-onsmy relatively tiny Mercedes was a challenge, but the ladies were amazingly good sports and wereappreciative of the ride. On the way to the hotel, they started talking about the special runs they maTrader Joe's in an adjacent city to purchase groceries and other items. I mentioned that we have TrJoe's here in Vegas and that there was one near the hotel. So....we made a Trader Joe's stop on the to the hotel and then had to figure out how to load even more bags and possessions into my little carladies were so pleased with their trip to Trader Joe's and for me, I felt like I had an instant connectiothese delightful, funny and hungry ladies. - AUDREY ADAMS PLOTKIN

Convention 2012 was my sixth (or seventhonvention) and I was curious to discover if I would stillet those goose bumps. Would everything I had beenelling everyone for years still be true? YES, THANK

GOODNESS, I CAN HONESTLY SAY IT WAS AWONDEFUL EXPERIENCE FROM BEGINNING TO

ND. Seeing our own Blanche Meisel get honored byer peers was a highlight for me, particularly when sheeceived the status of Lifetime Honorary Internationaloard Member. This is such a huge tribute it is difficult

o even express it. By the way, Blanche Meisel can stillance a mean Twist.

Also, of course to see our beautiful (50)andmade centerpieces take center stage on eachable reminded me of the teamwork and sisterhood thato exemplifies our WL. Having them come to life at theorah Fund Lunch where Dr. Arnold Eisen, Chancellorf JTS, spoke to us was indeed an honor and made

me proud that our WL and our PSW region participatesn the TF campaign at such a high level.

Dr. Ron Wolfson, famed educator and author, old us about the importance of relationship building inur synagogues and Sisterhoods and how it is key to

aving a stable and increased membership. Funny, warm and charismatic, he knows how to leave us withnformation that we will remember.

Barbara Lukasiewicz accepted our Jewel inhe Crown award for excellent WL programing. Nourprise, but so nice to be recognized. WLTBS andSW region REALLY got a lot of attention. Welleserved but still nice to hear our names mentionedur individual names as well as that of our WL. Cool.nd sitting up front in a big room did not hurt either.

Listening to Rabbi Bonnie Koppell, and havinger mother, a WL member, introduce her was a big hit.o see a Jewish woman, wife, mother, rabbi, militaryhaplain all rolled into one took our breath away. She

was funny, warm, real and accessible and yes, buyingarrings from the vendors like everyone else. Such ait, she made us all proud.

But seeing my sisterhood standing, singingnd rapping to a room full of delegates, total strangers,id it for me. Even typing the words fills my eyes withears. They were so good and so cute. As many of younow I can barely speak let alone sing, but there I was

mouthing the words at my seat, doing the handestures, laughing all the while.. Wow, what anxperience.eeing old friends was special, but making new friends

was equally so. Perhaps I will see them again atonvention 2014 in New York. One never knows where

he road of a WL member takes you. - BRENDA KATZ

I have never felt more proud, connected, and inspired as a Jewish woman as I didat the Womens League Convention thatwe just experienced. The genuineuplifting of my soul is hard to describe, yet the emotional feeling still lingers on.From our Chai Tunes debut songwelcoming delegates followed by a

dinner honoring our own special BlancheMeisel as first Honorary ConventionChair, the fun had just begun. Shacharitservices, knowledgeable speakers, informing workshops, zumba led byCertified Instructor Liz Goodman, thecomraderie at meals and even thevolunteering time; there was NEVER adul l moment . Womens LeagueConvention 2012 was my first full-timeconvention and I know now it wont bemy last. I am grateful to be a part of ourWomens League and will alwayscherish these special memories.- KIM MEMAR

I was so proud to be a membWLTBS at Convention! It was a convention and everyone wasappreciative of all that our volundid to help make it succePersonally, my favorite parConventions and PSW Conferencalways meeting the women. Wh

amazing group they are. When yoat a dinner table, listen in a workor have a spontaneous conversyou will always be enriched by it aawe of the caliber of women whoinvolved in Womens Leagues allthe country/world. They argenuine, caring and committedother favorite part is the ahmoments I always get from a speor workshop. This time there werefrom our Rabbi Goodman re: Kwelcoming Jews by choice and

    Jewish spouses into our command Rabbi Wolfson who spoke at h e i m p o r t a n c er e l a t i o n s h i p s i n congregation. I cant wa

to bring the ideas back toshul and our WL.

Throughout the year, and in a variety offorums, Womens League for Conservative Judaismis asked to express the organizations stand on a

variety of issues. Womens League is able to craft itspositions based on its public policy resolutions. It isin the process of creating Women's League publicpolicy resolutions so that your voice, as an affiliatedsisterhood, is heard.

    It is through the adoption of resolutions thatWomens League has the authority to take positionseither for or against issues that impact the Jewishcommunity in general and Jewish women inparticular. Resolutions are generally presented atthe biennial convention of Womens League;

however, in the intervening years betweenconventions, resolutions may be proposed andadopted at meetings of the WLCJ Board of Directorsand the annual meeting of the organization.
