The VisionID Retail Technology Day is designed to be a mix of presentations and demonstrations, along with a concurrent exhibition, showcasing the latest innovative technologies available to Irish Retailers.

During the day, presenters from key Retail solution companies such as Motorola, Herbert Retail and Zebra will provide solution overviews along with real life case studies of the different technologies in action.

In tandem with this, the different technologies discussed will be available for “hand-ons” appraisal in the adjoining Exhibition throughout the day.

During this presentation, Alex will focus on the following key areas:

• Technology as a cost cutting measure• Attracting and maintaining loyal customers• Supply chain flexibility • Improving staff productivity • Self Service

The presentation will look at global retail trends and the issues driving business decisions and IT spending in Retail.

We will also consider how retailers must respond to the “connected consumer” in new ways. Mobile and internet shopping are exploding and Retailers must offer a consistent, multi-channel offering to customers.

Putting the customer at the centre of IT strategy means deploying key technologies in new ways and equipping more staff with informa-tion and communication capabilities.

The presentation will give an overview of Motorola’s Portable Self Service/Shopping solution, along with a demonstration of a live solu-tion using the dedicated software solution from Yacme.

The business cases for both traditional segmented display Electronic Shelf Edge Labels (ESLs) and the newer dot matrix display ESLs will be explored, together with a review of the technology & its relative costs. The crucial importance of reliable and long battery life ESL communication technologies will also be discussed.

In this seminar Dave will present an overview of the Zebra solution set and how it applies to the Retail sector today.

The key points that will be covered in this presentation include:

Accuracy - maximise profits by using scales with the best resolution for the application and correctly calibrated.

Compliance - checkout scales integrated into the POS, the legal requirements.

Customer Satisfaction - weighing equipment is always customer facing, labels printed by scales can provide additional information such as ingredients, use by dates etc. Efficient barcode scanning and weighing at the POS reduces queuing time and improves the “shopping experience”.

“Do you know where your customers are? – measuring customer behavior and the impact on profitability and other benefits of tracking technologies in retail”

Gain understanding and achieve financial benefits from exploring the use of different technologies in retail focusing on customer be-haviour, equipment tracking and the security aspect to prevent criminal behaviour. A brief snapshot of the different technologies will be provided, which will include areas such as People Counting/Queue Management and Real Time Location solutions.

Speaker Profiles:

Alexander J. PriceAlex has over 17 years of experience in international business development, technical marketing and retail. Alex joined Symbol Tech-nologies (now Motorola’s Enterprise Mobility business) in 1999 at Symbol’s Corporate Headquarters in Long Island, New York, and was responsible for the world wide business of several mobile computing product lines.

In 2002 he relocated to Spain to assume the role of Business Development Manager for Mobile Computing Products in EMEA, focus-ing on driving business within the retail sector and other key industries, developing new markets and generating demand for mobile computing products across the region.

His current role at Motorola Enterprise Mobility business is Director for the Retail & Hospitality Sectors in EMEA. Having broad experi-ence in delivering mobility solutions to Retailers, he provides industry expertise and thought leadership to Motorola’s Customers and Partners. Alex puts significant focus on ensuring that Motorola deliver the innovative solutions that retailers need to drive operational efficiency and customer loyalty by executing on the right product mix, integration partners, and ISV’s that bring these solutions to Motorola customers.

Alex previously worked as Product Manager, responsible for Networked Colour Laser Copier products and Colour Servers at Canon, USA. He holds a specialized Master of International Management degree from The American Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona and speaks fluent Spanish and French, plus some Portuguese and Italian.

Nadim GhafoorNadim has over 16 years experience in retail starting out initially for general merchandise chain BHS in the UK and moving on to a retail management role. Nadim has worked for Motorola for 11 years and joined in 1997 as a Support Engineer he has since held vari-ous roles such as Project Manager, Pre-Sales Consultant and now is a Business Development Manager challenged with driving sales for Motorola’s PSS business in EMEA. Nadim has spent much of his time at Motorola focused on self-service with PSS and is regarded as a subject matter expert by colleagues, customers, partners and ISV’s alike. Nadim has been a critical success factor in many retail accounts and has experience working across EMEA with a broad spectrum of retailers.

Roberto RambaldiRoberto Rambaldi graduated as PhD at University of Bologna in Microelectronics focusing his activity on software development and worked as consultant for technology science parks in the Netherlands and in Italy. In 2000 he started up YACME with colleagues from University. Since that time he has been working on software applications and solutions on mixed Linux and Windows CE/Mobile focusing on retail solutions. He has participated in many Self Scanning projects in both the consultancy and delivery of such solutions.

Colin EddisonColin joined Herbert 11 years ago as Technical Director and has been responsible for the design, development & production of in-store products & software sub-systems. He introduced infrared queue counting cameras into Tesco in 2003 and has been actively researching E-Paper display technologies since 2001, including the joint development of the worlds first fully waterproof ESL piloted in Serve Over Counters. He is also active in Image Processing technologies with Herbert’s having Piloted a vision based security system for detecting when fraudulent items have been placed on Self Service Produce scales. Voice recognition technology has been piloted in-store at checkouts and location tracking technologies are also part of the Herbert armoury. Colin has utilised mathematical model-ling techniques to predict queues in-store and is familiar with basket analytics methods.

Birthe MortensenBirthe has been with Herbert Retail since 2004 and originally joined as the Tesco Account Manager. Having worked within the retail industry for a number of year, Birthe recently accepted the opportunity to promote new technologies such as people & footfall count-ing, automatic vehicle recognition and surgical instrument tracking into new markets as well as the familiar retail environment.

Jeff ShawJeff joined Herbert in 2002 and holds the position of Business Development Manager for the Tier 1 Grocery and Retail sectors, responsible for business growth, account management and client relationships. Jeff has increased the client base for core product and services and introduced product diversification into additional markets. A key element of this success has been a close working relationship with clients offering proactive suggestions for improving profitability.

Dave TaylorDave has spent over twenty years in the specialist printer business in technical, marketing and international sales roles. He jointed Zebra Technologies three years ago as a specialist in unattended printing applications and is the currently the Channel Account Man-ager UK South and Ireland.
