WHO WE ARE HISTORY: Best Buddies International is the world’s largest nonprofit organization devoted solely to providing opportunities for friendship, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Best Buddies was born 27 years ago, when founder Anthony K. Shriver recognized that people with IDD lacked opportunities to socialize with their peers without disabilities. Believing that friendship is key to building the self-esteem essential to a happy and productive life, Shriver incorporated Best Buddies as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization in 1989. PROGRAMS: Today, Best Buddies offers eight programs: Middle Schools, High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e-Buddies, Jobs, Ambassadors, and Promoters. With more than 2,200 chapters around the world, Best Buddies positively impacts the lives of over 900,000 people with and without IDD.
MISSION To establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with IDD.
VISION To put Best Buddies out of business.
BEST BUDDIES NEW YORK Best Buddies New York is the local affiliate of Best Buddies International and offers programs statewide: from New York City to Long Island, from the Capital Region to Buffalo.
NEW YORK PROGRAMS Our programs include Middle School, High School and College Friendship Programs, Citizens and Ambassadors. 66 chapters in New York State are currently impacting over 33,000 students and adults with and without IDD.
NEW YORK GOALS We currently have over 75 schools in New York on a wait list to start chapters in middle schools, high schools and colleges, and over 250 adults who are seeking friendship through our Citizens Program. Furthermore, 84% of adults with IDD do not have a paid job, creating a tremendous need to launch the Best Buddies Jobs Program. Proceeds from this event will support our existing programs, expand our friendship programs and establish the Best Buddies Jobs Program in New York City.

SPONSORSHIP COMMITMENT
THE KENNEDY & SHRIVER COMMITMENT
For more than half a century, the Kennedy family has been at the forefront of global efforts to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Starting with family matriarch Rose Kennedy, the Kennedys have always been strong proponents of helping individuals with IDD, who for years were shut away, powerless to change society’s negative perception of them. President John F. Kennedy founded the President’s Committee on Mental Retardation. He also welcomed a person with IDD to the White House, thus becoming the first head of state anywhere in the world to receive a person with IDD as an official guest. His sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was the founder and
driving force of Special Olympics. Mrs. Shriver also served as a board member of Best Buddies International in continued support of her son Anthony’s efforts to enhance the opportunities available to people with IDD. Influenced by his family’s commitment to the issues of IDD, Anthony Kennedy Shriver founded Best Buddies International in 1989 at Georgetown University. Under Anthony’s leadership, Best Buddies has expanded its programs to more than 2,200 middle school, high school and college campuses across the United States and internationally.

WHERE THE MONEY GOES
The 2016 Benefit Concert will raise an estimated three hundred thirty-five thousand dollars for Best Buddies New York, enabling thousands of friendships, leadership development and employment opportunities for people with IDD. Contributions to Best Buddies are judiciously spent, with the majority of these funds directly applied to the enrichment of the organization’s programs. The total annual budget demonstrates that 84 percent of all contributions are allocated to one of Best Buddies‘ eight programmatic divisions that directly integrate people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
