The Vision
• To ensure that water quality and quantity is managed so as to
support maximum biodiversity and ecological processes whilst also
ensuring optimal utilisation of river corridors for the sustained benefit
of all users. The Source to Sea project aims to restore river corridors so
that they are ecologically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
• To enhance natural processes in river systems to ensure best use for
all users. Source to Sea aims to restore river corridors, promoting
ecological, social and environmental processes for ever.

Source to Sea Aims and Broad Vision
• Water quality and quantity is managed to support maximum biodiversity while also ensuring optimal utilisation of river
corridors for the sustained benefit of all users.
• S2S aims to restore river corridors so that they are ecologically,
socially and economically sustainable.
• Connects national and municipal protected areas
• Maximise urban natural recreational spaces, restore
degraded natural and open space corridors for biodiversity
conservation, link corridors via recreational multi-use trails, develop eco-heritage, educational and tourism opportunities
and provide short and long tem local employment
opportunities
• Subsidise green jobs at sufficient scale to deliver lasting outcomes with significant social and ecological benefits

Defining the Source to Sea Corridor
![Page 8: VISION FOR THE SOURCE TO SEA CORRIDOR · 2. Sustainable use of the river corridor: unlocking the amenity, educational and recreational ecosystem services of the catchment Implementation](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022052015/602c8089f7a65b2f04265443/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Overview
• Define a pilot corridor to best demonstrate the advantages to Cape Town of actualising the Source to Sea concept
• A corridor which includes low-hanging fruit (examples of successes and where successes can easily be realised) and challengers which can demonstrate substantial transformation, and which can be replicated elsewhere in Cape Town and beyond
• Vision for two river corridors within the Zandvlei Catchment
– Diep River and Prinskasteels /Keysers River

BiodiverCities Conference Site Visit
• April 2014: UNPEC Conference in CT - four Cities that have national
parks within their boundaries (Rio, Mumbai, Nairobi, Cape Town)
• CCT co-ordinated Site Visit
– presented a holistic perspective on UPA and riverine system
challenges and solutions by showcasing a vision for two “Source
to Sea” river corridors
– Diep River and Prinskasteel/Keysers River

Next Steps
● Consolidate Council support for Source to Sea
● Secure necessary coordination capacity
● Build on Munich and Aachen city partnerships
● Seek support from stakeholders (schools, corporates, institutions)
● Identify and designate a S2S route
● Plan and implement Adopt a River Reach to schools
● Conceptual design of NMT commuter corridor
● Plan and implement weekly walk programme
● Consolidation of all events in catchment – link to S2S theme
● Report to Council to secure support - business case
